  1. Ilya is…he’s Shane’s entire heart. The air that he breathes, the reason for everything he does. None of it would matter without Ilya. This is the closest he’s ever come to losing him, and the thought of it - the possibility that everything they’ve been fighting for could just be lost - had struck Shane so acutely, so agonisingly.

He’d once thought that losing hockey was the worst thing that could ever happen to him. He knows, now, that isn’t true.

  2. Shane has been acting different lately. He can't sleep, no matter how tired he gets. He should be fine. He just finished his first ever season on the Ottawa Centaurs and has been openly married to his husband for almost a year now. He should be fine, right?

He knows Ilya is starting to notice, but he doesn't know what's wrong with him, so he's just going to pretend nothing is wrong.

Or, Many years ago, Shane Hollander was assaulted.

Shane was looking down. His eyes were squeezed shut, his brow furrowed in intense, painful concentration. His lips were moving, silently shaping the words. Good. Night. Forming them slowly, carefully, in the secret space of his own mouth.

Ilya’s breath hitched. He’d never seen this. Why would he have? Shane had never been sad around him. Never hurt. Never in this kind of quiet, defeated pain. Around Ilya, Shane had been pleasured and angry and frustrated and gloriously competitive. But never this. Never shattered.

(or, everything is same but Shane has a slight stutter that gets bad when he's sad. Ilya has never heard it because Shane has never been sad around him. Until their night in Vegas.)

  4. If worst came to worst, Svetlana would either talk Ilya - and Jane - through humanitarian visa applications, or find them someone who could. That would involve making many things public that neither Ilya nor Jane would want public. She would marry Ilya before it came to that, for the sake of Jane and whatever he was protecting. If Jane wasn't Russian - if he was Indonesian or Saudi or even another athlete - she would still do whatever they needed. The fact of the matter was that Ilya Rozanov was the only man she could actually imagine marrying; but this was really the only scenario in which she could imagine marrying him.

  7. Shane Hollander is not a small fucking guy; he is all muscle, with big, calloused hockey-player hands and eyes nearly pretty enough to disguise the violence hidden in breadth of his shoulders.

    Alexei is impressed.

Not a bad get, for someone fished out of a pool of hockey men who look like thumbs, their noses like squashed tomatoes and ears like boat sails. If it could not be beautiful, nosy bitch Svetlana, if it has to be a man, if it has to be a hockey player, then rich as God Shane Hollander isn’t the worst Ilyusha could have pulled.

  9. “You’re sick,” says Shane, albeit shakily because he isn’t sure about this. He isn’t sure about them, or what they are. He doesn’t know if he’s allowed to care or worry because he doesn’t know what to call them. There is no routine or rules. All he knows is he probably shouldn’t be calling the captain of another team, especially not in the locker room. He shuts his locker and grabs his bag. “You are obvious. Did you call me to say obvious things, like sky is blue? Or Montreal sucks. Or that you cry when you come?” It sounds like he’s smiling. Shane’s stomach swoops, tripping over itself in a swell of affection. He rubs his hand over his face, feeling disoriented by the flood of conflicting emotions. “Fuck you,” Shane snaps, habitually. or: ilya always texts shane before they play against each other, but today he doesn’t. shane, and all spectating eyes, can tell someone is off with boston’s captain.

  13. “But yeah,” Shane continues, “tell him I’m not mad. Well, not about the accident, at least. I’m mad about him for ruining our plans last night.” He smiles sheepishly. “Sorry I didn’t text.” I’m sorry I didn’t text last night, by the way. I was looking forward to our plans last night. I’m mostly mad at Marlow for fucking that up. I was gonna ask you— “Ilya? You good?” Shane pulls back the hand Ilya was holding to poke him on the chest. (He seems to be under the impression that the last game he played was against the Boston Bears.) -- Ilya goes through seeing Shane unconscious on the ice again, and people try to convince him that they are going to be okay.

  14. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov both need one thing to live their dreams of playing for the NHL: a mating bite. Shane's an omega, and the League doesn't allow unmated omegas to play hockey. Ilya's a Russian alpha, who needs a mate to get a U.S. visa. Their slightly harebrained solution? Bite each other, and let the unfinished bond fade. After five years of stupid texts, awkward heat-care packages, and dancing around their feelings, the bond still hasn't faded and ignoring it has become impossible—something's got to give. -- Contains spoilers for those who have only watched the show, and for The Long Game. A/B/O AU that very loosely follows canon. Happy ending!

  15. “Game is over,” he says. “You won. I lost. I was annoying. Normal.” “That’s not—” Shane starts, then stops, because he actually doesn't know how to finish that thought without sounding like an idiot. His jaw works, teeth grinding together. That's not what I meant. That's not the point. You said I was boring and you were right and I need you to say it again so I know where I stand, so I know what you think of me, so I can stop waiting for the other shoe to drop. He settles for: “You were kind of an asshole.”

  16. Two certainties defined Shane Hollander's life: he was falling in love with Ilya Rozanov, and he was keeping a career-ending secret. When Ilya discovers Shane's suppressants on the heels of seeing Shane injured during a game, fear makes them say things they both regret. Nine months later at the All-Star Game, accidentally running into Ilya in the hotel elevator triggers a breakthrough heat—forcing the two idiots to finally talk (and fuck). -- Contains spoilers for those who have only watched the show, and for The Long Game. A/B/O AU that diverges from canon right after Shane is injured in Chapter 21 (and episode 5) of Heated Rivalry. Happy ending!
