It used to worry Shane. In the early days of their heated rivalry, where the line between fucking and frenemies had started to get shaky and blurred, he used to lie awake at night wondering what Ilya saw in him. If he used to lurk in the murky depths of online gossip columns to read about Boston Raiders Captain Ilya Rozanov’s latest speculated flings with supermodels and upcoming song writing prodigies; well, that information was between him and his internet cookies and that’s where it was going to stay. It was hard not to compare himself though. All of Ilya’s previous known partners (and there were many of them) were tall, razor thin and packing a stunning pair of perfectly round elevated breasts. Shane has none of these qualities. He’s not particularly tall - at least by the standards of ice hockey players - he’s stocky, and he is pretty positive that he does not possess a rack. And yet. And yet, Ilya cannot seem to keep his hands away from Shane’s chest. __ Shane notices Ilya's obsession with his chest. He decides to go along for the ride.

Ilya Rozanov @rozan0v_off Almost fell asleep watching Shane Hollander play. Is the most depressing man I know. Even his chirps are polite. Maybe he wouldn’t be so boring if he weren’t best friends with his mom? What the hell, Rozanov? Shane grinds his teeth, desperate to keep his tears at bay. This is ridiculous. This isn’t even mean. Not really. Shane should consider himself lucky, really; Ilya is never usually this bad at trash-talking other players. So why is Shane even hurt? Perhaps it’s the fact that Ilya wrote something about him at all, and Shane only found out because Hayden sent him a screenshot of it. Or maybe it’s the fact that he used the word “boring”, which is an adjective that has been used to describe Shane so many times throughout his life that he’s come to loathe the very letters composing it. Or, Rozanov creates a fake Twitter account to defend Shane from his haters, and then overcorrects when some fangirls get suspicious about his identity.

He was aware that he sounded too dismissive, judging from the lift of a dark eyebrow and a dry look from Shane. Really? "Music during intimacy can be more than mere background noise, you know," argued Shane as they lounged around in bed for what was supposed to be an easy afternoon of nothing more than book reading and phone scrolling, and perhaps a nap-- quite a luxury. But then they were on vacation, holed up in absolute secrecy in Shane's lakeside cottage somewhere in Eastern Quebec; Ilya had not bothered with the exact location given he was more interested in other, far more absorbing matters once he got to the cottage. As always, he could not quite get enough of Shane Hollander, a fact that ought to be firmly established by now as to not give any pause or thought, yet he found himself amazed and constantly in awe of this person who'd become everything to him. If Scott Hunter's sudden and very public coming out felt like the unclenching of a fist, being here with Shane felt like he could finally let out the breath he did not know he was holding all this time. And if he were like this, how much more did it feel to Shane-- the relief of having finally unburdened himself to his parents. It was as if a load had been lifted from his shoulders yet the process had been overwhelming in the extreme. Now they were crossing over to unknown territory, as boyfriends. Everything about this was heady and scary in equal measure, yet this-- lightheartedly bickering over something as trivial as one's favorite music to have sex to-- brought him back on familiar ground. "You mean Closer," said Shane. "Yeah, I've listened to Nine Inch Nails. That does sound like you." "Club music, something raw, something edgy," he said. "Skillrex. Avicii. It's what I like." He eyed Shane from under his brows. "Whereas you...let me guess." Shane's dark brow remained lifted as he stared at him, urging him to continue. "Adele," Ilya pronounced flatly, with a bit of a grimace. "Angsty. Full of meaning. Will make you cry during fucking." Shane burst out laughing. "No. I mean, I adore Adele and I do have all her records, but no, I wouldn't put her on during those times. Or even when I think about having sex." Ilya watched as Shane's gaze slid away, becoming distracted, as though he were looking deep into himself. This examination of introspectiveness was a new thing for Ilya. He was guilty of calling Shane boring early into their acquaintance when he was like this; he'd thought him moody and antsy, and he still sometimes found it frustrating, if only because Shane seemed so far away from him, but he was learning to read Shane better now, paying attention to his subtle cues and shifting responses. After a short pause, Shane continued, "I've never...I mean, I've never really slept with anyone whom I'd like to put some music on for." "Not even Rose?" Ilya could not help but ask. He was almost embarrassed to admit that Rose Landry, lovely human being that she was, was still very much a thorn on his side whenever he thought of Shane being with her, no matter how brief. Shane gave a small, wry smile. "Well, she put on her music when we were together, of course," he said. Ilya reached out a hand to touch him lightly on the knee. "What about me?" he asked, voice soft. That broke the spell as Shane's gaze slid back to him. "Have you ever played your songs when you thought of me?" "All the time," said Shane softly. "Really?" Ilya shifted so he lay on his side, head propped on one hand. "What times?" Shane shrugged. "Late at night, mostly, in bed with my pods on, thinking about you and what you might be doing. Missing you. Fantasizing about you." "You touched yourself." It was not a question. "Of course," said Shane, his gaze steady as he looked him right back.
