  1. They call it a Lucid Interval. A brief moment of clarity after a traumatic brain injury where the patient appears fine. Awake. Alert. Happy.

After the hit, Shane Hollander wakes up. He jokes with the nurses. He smiles at Ilya. He makes plans for the summer.

Ilya Rozanov just outed himself to the entire world on live television to save him, but he can't save him from this. Shane isn't getting better. He is dying. And these are the last conversations they will ever have.

A story about the hit, the confession, and the long, slow silence that followed.

They weren't saying goodbye to each other; Ilya was too confident that Shane would win.

    Shane loved winning.

He lost, the first lost that Ilya didn't enjoy.

Because he only left Ilya to suffer more.

  3. Let's pretend that Shane and Ilya's sunset beach scene took place the night before the All-Star game, and Shane's gay confession is slightly overshadowed by Ilya's reaction to an injury on the ice. As the 2017 All-Star game draws to a close, you have to admire Shane Hollander’s leadership on the ice tonight. With the chemistry we are seeing from his team, you would think these players have been training together all season. Notably, this includes long-time rival Ilya Rozanov—and while it may come as a surprise, it’s clear that Hollander and Rozanov’s competitive history is not getting in the way of them working seamlessly together on the ice. It’s also clear that captain Aaron Eriksson is not going to be able to squeeze out a win against this powerful duo tonight. Rozanov with the puck now, with a beautiful pass to Hollander as they move to further solidify their victory, and ouch—Hollander just took a hard hit from Eriksson. That did not look good. There’s Scott Hunter helping Hollander to his feet now. Hollander’s waving away the medics, but you can tell he’s hurt. Looks like a possible broken rib. Who knows what this could mean for Montreal’s remaining season, but It’s safe to say that Hollander will not be finishing this All-Star game on the ice. And here comes Ilya Rozanov— boy, he is not happy. He’s confronting Eriksson now. This looks like it could get ugly. There go the gloves... And ouch, that is a powerful right hook from Rozanov. With three minutes left in the period, Hollander’s injury won’t prevent his team from clinching the victory, but it looks like Rozanov is going to be watching the remainder of this game from the penalty box. Later, when Ilya knocked on his hotel room door, Shane pulled him inside looking furious. “That was so fucking stupid, Rozanov, what were you thinking?” he hissed. Ilya just smirked. “Was thinking Eriksson would look pretty with less teeth.” In his deep voice it almost sounded sensual. “You can’t—that was so obvious, people are going to talk—” Shane said, eyes wild and anxious. Ilya looked at him like he was an idiot. “And they say what? I hit him, so this means you and I are fucking?” He rolled his eyes, but there was a fondness in his expression that never failed to make Shane feel breathless. “I need your permission to throw punch, now?” “It was reckless,” Shane argued. “Eriksson had it coming. I would have done same thing if he came after any teammate.” It was a lie, and they both knew it. “Only asshole would play dirty in stupid All-Star game.” “It was a clean hit.” “Was not. His elbow—” “I watched it back, Rozanov, it was clean,” Shane interrupted him, voice firm. “And so what?” Ilya sounded exasperated. “Is hockey. Sometimes people get punched. You never play before?” “Fuck you.” A smile was tugging at Shane’s lips despite himself. Ilya smiled back at him for a moment, but then his eyebrows drew together in concern. “How are your ribs?” “They’re fine—that’s not what I’m worried about right now.” “Is what I worry about. Show me,” he demanded. As always, Shane’s first instinct was to obey his order without question. He managed to keep himself from immediately raising his shirt, because Ilya couldn’t have everything he wanted from him all the fucking time. “Ilya.” “Shane,” Ilya said mockingly, and he stepped forward, crowding Shane against the bed until he was forced to sit down on the edge of the mattress. “Show.” With a heavy sigh, Shane lifted the hem of his t-shirt to expose the purple bruises starting to bloom over the right side of his ribcage. Ilya reached down to trace his fingers along the mottled skin, and Shane hissed at the sensation. “Is not so bad,” Ilya said appraisingly. You will recover before playoffs.” “I know that, you asshole. Which is why it was fucking stupid of you to deck Eriksson over nothing.” Shane felt a tiny bit of satisfaction from being right. But mostly he still felt mad at Ilya for risking everything because of his stupid temper. “It looked worse on the ice.” “I don’t care!” Shane snapped. “I don’t need you fighting my battles for me, Rozanov.” Ilya stared at him, looking deeply unimpressed. “Ah, so you were going to punch him, then?” he said pointedly. “It was a clean hit—” “So you say.” “Do you want me to pull up the clip and show you?” Shane said, tugging his phone out of his pocket, ready to do just that. “No, no, no. I do not want to watch you get hurt again.” There was something tender in Ilya’s expression, but it quickly shifted back to the cocky arrogance Shane was used to. “But you would like to see my punch again, da?” he teased. “Definitely not.” Another lie. Ilya was grinning now, and it was almost terrifying how much Shane wanted to kiss him.

“Oh yes, I’m sure doctors would say this is fine,” Rozanov waved his hands around more violently. “‘Yes, Hollander’ they would say, ‘take your broken ribs and go get fucked so hard you cannot move. Is no problem, no problem at all’.” “Bruised, not broken,” Shane corrected, although he knew that wasn’t really the point. “And a little rough sex isn’t going to kill me. I’ll be back on the ice before the next Raiders game, it won’t affect the season if you’re like…worried about poor sportsmanship or whatever.” “Fuck Hollander, I do not care about the season! I care about–” Rozanov cut himself off sharply. Shane gets injured during a game, then tries to hide that fact from Ilya. It goes about as well as you might expect.

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, star players and fiancés of the Ottawa Centaurs, have shared both love and triumph on and off the ice, including two Stanley Cup victories. But when a devastating hit leaves Shane with partial amnesia, he forgets only Ilya—the man he once loved and imagined a future with. The world knows them as Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander—superstars, champions, captains. Ottawa’s golden boys. Two men who changed the shape of a franchise and, without ever meaning to, shifted the culture of the league simply by loving each other openly. They play on the Ottawa Centaurs, share a line, share a home, share a future. Their engagement had broken the internet for a solid forty-eight hours—rings flashing during warmups, a quiet kiss caught by a long lens, Shane’s hand resting so naturally at Ilya’s back it felt like it had always belonged there. There are haters. There always are. But they are drowned out by the roar of fans who chant their names together, by teammates who treat their relationship as the most normal thing in the world, by families who sit side by side in the stands wearing matching jerseys. Together, they have won two Stanley Cups. Together, they have bled for this sport. And together, they understand the risk. Hockey is fast. Hockey is violent. Hockey does not care who you love. They’ve always known that. Ilya learned it first in April of 2014. Back then, Shane was playing against Boston. A hard hit—late, ugly, the kind that makes the arena go silent before anyone even realizes why. Shane went down wrong, helmet snapping back, body going slack as he hit the ice. Ilya had been on the bench. He remembers standing up too fast. The way his vision tunneled. The way his heart stopped beating—not metaphorically, not poetically, but truly, painfully still—as Shane didn’t move. He remembers gripping the boards so hard his knuckles went white. Remembered screaming Shane’s name without realizing he was doing it. Remembered the medical staff swarming, remembered the stretcher, remembered not breathing again until he saw Shane’s chest rise in the tunnel. After that, every hit carried a ghost. Every time Shane stayed down a second too long, Ilya felt 2014 claw its way up his spine. They talked about it, quietly, late at night. About the risks. About concussions and broken bones and the way the game takes pieces of you and never gives them back. They promised each other honesty. They promised each other presence. They promised that no matter what—no matter the cameras, the league, the rules—they would choose each other first. That promise is tested again in 2017. It happens fast. Too fast. The puck is dumped deep, Shane chasing hard, skates digging in. There’s a collision near the boards—shoulder to shoulder, brutal but clean—and then something goes wrong. Shane’s edge catches. His head snaps back. He goes down. And this time… he doesn’t move. The arena goes deathly quiet in that way every hockey fan recognizes instantly. No cheering. No booing. Just the sharp scrape of skates slowing, players looking around, realizing something is wrong. Ilya sees it from center ice. Sees Shane’s body twisted unnaturally. Sees his stick slip from his fingers. Sees the stillness. The past slams into him like a freight train. But this time— This time Ilya doesn’t freeze. He doesn’t stay back. He doesn’t wait for officials. He doesn’t care about protocol or penalties or the watching eyes of thousands of fans and millions more at home. His fiancé is unmoving. Ilya drops his gloves and sprints. “ILYA—!” someone shouts, maybe a ref, maybe a teammate. He doesn’t hear it. He drops to his knees beside Shane, hands shaking as he cups his helmeted face. “Shane. Shane—hey, love, look at me. Please. Please.” His voice cracks on the last word.

  6. “Mmnnh, no, come back. This is big deal. First time Shane Hollander has ever thrown punches. First time Shane Hollander has been punched. Everyone is talking about it.” “I punched Peterson because he slammed you.” It should have been satisfying watching the way shock immediately blushed over Ilya’s face, but all Shane could feel was embarrassment for even admitting it. “He was… I mean… He was all over you. And it– I don’t know, I was just so angry that he was touching you that I— I don’t know. I just saw red and, I don’t even remember all of it.” Shane felt like he was losing himself. He knew he was more emotional these past few weeks, a swirling mess of feelings and breaking his diet and lazying around more, but he had chalked most of it up to Ilya’s influence. or, Shane Hollander is pregnant, and doesn't know it yet, and is increasingly confused why he's feeling so crazy lately. Acting so strange. Crying so much. So horny.

Alternate scenes in the hospital following the hit in s1e5. The last thing Shane Hollander felt before Marlow slammed into him wasn’t fear. He never saw Marlow coming. The last thing Shane felt was confusion. One moment, he had the puck, confident, cocky even, and he stole a glance across the ice. From under his shield, he met Ilya’s gaze, and smirked. Ilya returned his smirk with a half-grin of his own, competitive, but Shane didn’t have time to revel in the reaction. Ilya’s face transformed in a fraction of a second, his eyes growing wide, his mouth half-open, maybe in surprise, maybe in a desperate attempt to shout a warning, a look Shane Hollander had never before seen on the face of Ilya Rosanov. Terror. — The ringing in Shane’s ears was deafening, all of his other senses dulled, his world enveloped in darkness. He swam aimlessly through the darkness, with nothing but the sound of the ringing, trying to decipher up from down. He thought he heard someone say his name, and tried to concentrate, bringing the sound of the voice forward through the ringing. “Shane! Open your eyes!” he heard, louder this time. “Come on. Wake up!” Before he could think or respond, he felt a grinding pressure in the middle of his chest, and groaned. He cracked his eyes open, the bright lights from the arena ceiling sending shooting pain through his head, and immediately squeezed them shut again. His helmet was gone, and he could feel the cold sting of the ice on the back of his head. “Nope, there you go, stay awake, Shane,” the voice said again. The grinding pressure assaulted his senses once more, the medic pushing a fist into his sternum beneath his heavy pads. He groaned again, his limbs feeling heavy and uncoordinated as he struggled to move to push the person away. “Hollander!” he heard from further away, this voice different, familiar, distinct from the ringing. His senses sharpened. He tried opening his eyes again, squinting against the lights. “Mmokay…” he mumbled incoherently, and tried to turn, searching desperately for the man he knew was calling his name. “No, Shane, don’t move,” the medic above him said sternly, putting both hands on the sides of his head and keeping his face pointed toward the ceiling. He squeezed his eyes shut again and groaned as another pair of hands slid a collar behind his head and secured it around his neck. He tried to concentrate, tried to put all of the pieces together – the arena lights above him, the ringing in his ears, the medics, the cold ice beneath him, Rosanov’s concerned voice. There must’ve been an accident. “Hold still, Shane. We’ve got you,” he heard, more loudly this time, the ringing finally starting to subside a little. He felt multiple people grip him at once, rolling him to the side. He winced and grit his teeth hard as they rolled him back again, onto a board. He listened. “Is he okay? Fucking tell me!” It was more aggressive this time, with a distinctly panicked undertone Shane had never heard from the man before. “Get back to your bench, Rosanov!” someone yelled back. Shane fought to open his eyes again, scanning from left to right as best he could, desperate to catch a glimpse of the panicked Russian, to reassure him, to settle at least a little piece of the emotional turmoil he knew the man was enduring. A medic tugged the glove from his right hand, and he groaned, pain shooting through his shoulder as they secured his arms across his chest. Nausea rushed through him in a wave and his vision swam, dark spots dancing in front of him, as the medics rolled him swiftly off the ice and down the corridor toward the waiting ambulance. “Stay awake, Shane. Keep those eyes open,” they baggered him. “My parents…” Shane mumbled quietly. “Your coach is calling your parents,” the medic answered him. “Tell him I’m okay,” Shane adds. “He’ll worry.” “Who?” he hears the medic ask, the ringing getting louder again. “Ilya…” Shane whispers, letting the darkness envelop him again. — The next time Shane regains consciousness, his senses all hit at once. The bright lights, the beeps and drips and shorthand speak of dozens of people, the sharp scent, the distinct feeling of cold air on dried sweat, and most importantly, the pain. “You’re okay, Shane,” a man in scrubs says, mercifully holding up a hand to shield Shane’s eyes from the lights as he looks down at him. “Do you know where you are?” “Hospital?” Shane guesses. “Good job,” he smiles. “Do you remember what happened?” Shane grits his teeth and uses his left hand to try to fumble toward his right shoulder.. “Whoa, buddy, hang on,” the doctor says, grabbing Shane’s left hand and guiding it away again, placing it back on the table. “Do you remember what happened?” Shane tries to shake his head and a lightning bolt of pain shoots down his spine from behind his eyes. He squeezes them shut, suddenly aware of the collar still around his neck. “Relax,” the doctor tells him. “Take some deep breaths.”
