  1. Ilya is sick. Shane comes to the rescue. Fluff ensues. "Ilya was sick, and he was furious. He did not get sick. Certainly not sick enough to get benched for a night, and yet here he was, staring at his reddened eyes as he gripped the sink in his stupid apartment, resisting the urge to cough." Or: What if Ilya had gotten sick and thus not been playing during a Boston/Montreal game in Boston? What if Shane had come to take care of him? What if they had finally had a moment where both of their walls had been down, far earlier in their relationship?

He just sighs and Shane laughs. "Oh my god, did he... He ate something you wanted and they didn't have it anymore? Is that the thing?" Shane has a surprise for Ilya. Shane and Ilya hadn’t bothered closing the blinds when they’d finished fucking the previous night. They’d been nearly asleep, a sweaty entanglement of limbs and hair and sheets and muffled moans, when Shane had remembered that he had a surprise for Ilya, one that necessitated setting an alarm and getting up early. He’d only told Ilya about the surprise part before they’d fallen asleep, and now that the first light of the day began to filter through the leafy canopy outside, Shane knew he wasn’t going to fall back asleep. As quietly as he could, he reached for his phone and turned off the alarm he’d set. Beside him, Ilya twitched in his sleep, his lashes fluttering delicately against his face. Shane wanted to reach out and stroke his face, and he wanted to watch Ilya sleep forever. He wanted to hold Ilya and be held by Ilya. Ilya inhaled sharply, suddenly awake beside Shane now. “Good morning,” Ilya said, stretching his arms above his head and yawning. His t-shirt rode up, exposing the taut skin of his belly, and Shane considered abandoning his plan entirely to spend the morning in bed. “Surprise.” “Surprise?” Shane said. “You said there was surprise,” Ilya said. “For me.” “There is,” Shane said. “But you are not naked and there is no breakfast in bed,” Ilya said, pursing his lips into a pout. “So how can there be surprise?” “There are lots of kinds of surprises,” Shane said, to which Ilya looked doubtful. “Canadians are too boring for real surprises,” he said finally, wrapping Shane in a hug and rolling over onto him. Ilya’s weight pressed the air out of Shane’s lungs momentarily, leaving him with the feeling of having been suspended in space. “This is an exciting Canadian surprise,” Shane said, pushing Ilya off of him. “We have to go now, or we’ll be too late.” “The surprise can’t wait two minutes for me to suck your dick?” Ilya said. He flashed a smile at Shane. “My dick will be here when we get back,” Shane said. “And you can have it for longer than two minutes.” “One minute is maybe actually all I need,” Ilya said. “Fuck you,” Shane said, swatting Ilya’s elbow as he pushed the blankets off of them. “I know you want me to fuck you,” Ilya said. “Fuck off.” Shane swung his legs out of bed, reaching for a pair of shorts on the floor with his feet. He stepped into the shorts—Ilya’s, it appeared—and pressed his face against the glass of the window. The sky was turning a golden yellow, last night’s spiderwebs heavy with dew as a new day began. They needed to get moving. “I know you like it,” Ilya said, which wasn’t wrong, though Shane was unwilling to give him the satisfaction of knowing this. “I’d like it more if you got dressed and met me outside,” Shane said. He shuffled into a shirt—his own, this time—he found on the floor and went to the back door, where he’d stashed a small bag with a blanket and an apple for each of them last night. He was lacing up his sneakers when Ilya appeared, wearing a Team Canada shirt from the World Juniors the year before they’d met. It was an old shirt from the back of Shane’s closet, bought back before he had filled out the musculature of his frame, and the fabric was tight against Ilya’s body. The entire scene made the blood in Shane’s ears pound, forcing him to once again consider abandoning his plan so Ilya could fuck him face-first into the sofa all morning. Ilya took an apple from Shane and bit off a chunk. “Was that surprise?” Ilya said. “After I cook you tuna melt, you finally make me breakfast in return? Raw apple?” “Not the surprise,” Shane said. “Not even close. And I literally cooked for you last night.” He motioned for Ilya to follow him out the back door, where they passed the ashen remains of last night’s fire. The blackened coals were still damp from the water they’d used to extinguish the flames. At the end of the patio, they caught the deer path that hugged the shoreline of the lake. Shane reached for Ilya’s hand and held it tightly, even though the trail was really only wide enough for them to walk single file and the brush was summer-dense. He kept turning around and smiling at Ilya, thrilled that they could act like this outside of the confines of a hotel room or a locked door, even though more than once Shane was convinced he’d gotten lost. With most of his mind focused on Ilya, these woods where he’d spent so much time suddenly seemed unfamiliar—larger and denser than he’d noticed. Shane prided himself on his observation skills. He made sure to tell his parents as often as he could that he was grateful for his mom for introducing him to hockey and grateful for his dad for introducing him to birdwatching. Hockey had been the first love of his life, but birding afforded him access to a supernatural calm that anchored him through the ups and downs of each season—the hockey season, the year’s seasons. Everyone who wanted to play on the big stage had to learn how to face the pressures of the league, and Shane had never told any of the guys where his poise came from. His ability to stand up tall in the face of blaring noise and flashing lights, his presence of mind to follow the puck up and down the ice—these were honed just as much by the hours he and his mom spent at the rink as by the hours he and his dad had spent together in the woods around their cottage while he was growing up.

Shane never thought of himself as a jealous person. But Ilya Rozanov made him feel like he was losing his mind. Svetlana Vetrova. That was the name of the girl Ilya Rozanov was pictured with. The beautiful, statuesque, model like, stunning woman with the perfect skin and amazing hair and deep hazel eyes that Rozanov was hanging off of. Shane frowned at the television, watching the entertainment program break down the photos of Rozanov leaving a club in Boston, hand in hand with one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen, a cigarette tucked behind his ear, his shirt unbuttoned too much to be decent, the muscles of his forearms so defined Shane had to resist reaching out to touch the screen. “Vetrova’s father is one of the most legendary goalies in Russian history, so it seems like Rozanov is in the company of hockey royalty,” the blonde woman on the television said. “They seem like very good friends,” the man standing next to her said, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. “They certainly look good together.” They do, Shane thought as the photo changed to one of them climbing into the backseat of a town car, Rozanov’s hand practically on Svetlana’s ass. He had no right to feel anything about this. Rozanov was just some guy he’d had sex with a few times. Shane was a free agent, too. He could go out and sleep with anyone else whenever he wanted, and Rozanov wouldn’t care. Shane had no claim to Rozanov. They’d had sex a few times, but it didn’t mean anything. It was convenient and Rozanov was hot and incredible at fucking him, but it wasn't anything more than that. At least, that was what he had tried to remind himself. This was nothing. He watched the television as it flicked to a photo of Rozanov sucking on a cigarette. Shane had begun to miss the taste of cigarettes. >>> He moaned into the pillow, his eyes screwed shut as Rozanov fucked him, his arm pressing down on his shoulders. Shane reached behind him, desperately trying to grab onto something to try and ground him as his body tensed, grateful when Rozanov grabbed his hand and bore down over him, his hips pinning him to the bed. Shane bit his lip as Rozanov moaned loudly into the back of his neck, his hips moving faster and harder – Shane cried out as he came, squeezing Rozanov’s hand as he fucked him, not slowing down as Rozanov chased his own orgasm. Shane loved being used like this; he loved when he was spent and exhausted and Rozanov kept fucking him, moaning his name, desperate to come too. Rozanov cried out Shane’s name as he came, his hips slowing down to a grind as he slid his hand into Shane’s hair, gripping him tightly as he finally stopped moving, slumping over him. Shane took a deep breath, doing his best to breathe normally again underneath Rozanov’s weight. He grimaced when he realised his cock was trapped between the sheets and his stomach, his come smeared everywhere. Rozanov seemed to realise Shane was trying to move, pulling out slowly and rolling off of him. “Fuck,” Shane mumbled, rolling onto his back and looking down at himself. Rozanov loved when he came untouched, making it his mission to make Shane come that way every single time. Rozanov turned towards him, slapping his hand over his chest. Shane flinched as Rozanov leaned over him and licked the come off of his stomach, laughing as he moved up to kiss him. Shane smiled as Rozanov’s hand rested over his neck, his tongue moving against his as he pressed closer to Shane. Shane pushed him gently off of him, sitting up and blinking. “We need to shower,” he said. Rozanov sighed, watching as Shane stood and crossed to the bathroom, doing his best not to make a face as the ache in his ass. “You are okay?” Rozanov asked. “Yes,” Shane answered honestly. He was always okay; he loved this feeling, like his whole body had been pushed beyond his limits and he could barely hold himself up. He flicked the shower on, flinching at the sight of himself in the mirror. His hair was a sweaty mess, his skin was flushed red, sweat had beaded down his chest, and come was drying in the hair beneath his bellybutton. Shane didn’t look anything like Svetlana, or the many women Rozanov was photographed with. Shane wasn’t tall and thin and beautiful. He was average height, broad shouldered and plain. He hated his flat hair and his ugly freckles and his boring brown eyes. Shane was so busy frowning at himself that he didn’t see Rozanov walk into the bathroom. He startled when Rozanov gripped his waist, kissing his neck snapping him out of his reverie. Shane watched in the mirror as Rozanov reached for his hand and pulled him towards the shower; for a brief moment, he thought about the photo he had seen of Rozanov with Svetlana. >>> “Not bad, Hollander,” Hayden said, clapping him on the back. “Not bad?” Shane asked. “A hat trick is better than not bad.” A hat trick against Boston, no less. Scoring against Rozanov was no easy feat. He shucked off his jersey, listening as JJ led the team in celebrations, loudly singing their team song.

  20. Shane had known for a while now that he was in love with Ilya Rozanov. But it was seeing the sweet, gentle, caring side of him that leaked out more and more after they finally admitted their feelings for one another that clinched the deal. “We’re good here,” Ilya promised him, voice softer than Shane is used to hearing it as he gently ran a lar ge hand gently over his shoulders. “Your family is here. Your boyfriend is here. You’re good here, okay?” “My boyfriend?” Shane asked, slightly surprised at the other man’s use of the word. And it was when he looked up, staring into Ilya’s soft blue eyes as he casually confirmed his words, as though there was no doubt in Ilya’s mind that they were anything but, that Shane knew. He could love this man for the rest of his life. He could love him for all of their days, and it wouldn’t even be hard. Loving Ilya was easier than breathing. It was natural, instinctual, and impossible to live without. ________________________________________________________ During their visit to Shane's parents' house, he reflects on just how much he loves Ilya Rozanov It wasn’t until Shane saw Ilya at his parents’ house, a setting completely unlike any other one they’d ever been in together (for starters, there were actually other people around that knew their secret), that he began to realize all the things he hadn’t noticed about the other man before. The first thing he noticed was just how… polite Ilya was with his parents. Shane hadn’t ever realized that was something Ilya knew how to be. Charming, yes. An asshole, yes. But polite? Sure, he could be sweet and affectionate, a side of him that Shane was thankfully seeing more and more of, but even a sweet Ilya Rozanov was still a bit of an ass. Except in his parents’ home, Ilya was polite. Polite and… nervous? If there was one thing that Ilya Rozanov had always been defined by, it was confidence. He exuded it at every moment. Even before a championship game, you would never see anything but complete confidence in him. Shane had seen him uncomfortable before – in press interviews, when he couldn’t quite piece together what a reporter was asking him, during the Olympics because, well, Russia was Russia – but he’d never seen him nervous. At least not until Shane brought him home to meet his parents and watched as the cool, confident Ilya Rozanov turned into a shy, timid version of himself. He’d brushed it off, for the most part, too busy having a panic attack to really think much about it. It wasn’t like he could blame the man, after all. Shane was far more of a wreck than he was. Anyone in this situation would be nervous, he thought. Shane had known for a while now that he was in love with Ilya Rozanov. But it was seeing the sweet, gentle, caring side of him that leaked out more and more after they finally admitted their feelings for one another that clinched the deal. It was the way that, when Shane was struggling to get air into his lungs, too busy spiraling about what a complete and utter shit show his life was, Ilya was the first to comfort him, not his parents. And it was when he looked up, staring into Ilya’s soft blue eyes (the eyes that were his favorite color in the world, the ones he could stare at forever and never get tired of, eyes that saw every inch of Shane for who he was) as he casually confirmed his words, as though there was no doubt in Ilya’s mind that they were anything but, that Shane knew. He could love this man for the rest of his life. He could love him for all of their days, and it wouldn’t even be hard. Loving Ilya was easier than breathing. It was natural, instinctual, and impossible to live without. By the time they waved goodbye to his parents and pulled out of the driveway, Shane had never been more grateful for Ilya than in that moment. There was no way, he knew, that he would’ve made it through the afternoon if Ilya hadn’t come with him. He’d been perfect. Supportive, kind, gentle. All the things Shane had desperately needed that day. While lying in bed later that night, unable to sleep due to the last vestiges of anxiety clinging to his brain, he replayed the afternoon in his mind. It was then that he realized that even the things Ilya had done that, albeit in the moment had annoyed Shane, were really just more parts of Ilya that he found so endearing. His use of the word lover hadn’t been some sort of snarky remark. It’d been the language barrier, the fact that there were so many words that Ilya knew the definitions of but not the true context of them. The way he’d been the only one eating the meal Shane’s dad had made for them while the rest of them were talking hadn’t been rude or a lack of awareness of the situation. It’d been an attempt to be respectful to David, to show that at least one person was grateful he’d gone through the trouble of making them a meal. And, the more Shane thought about it, probably because it was the first home-cooked meal Ilya had been given in a long time. Maybe since his mother died. He rolled over in bed, watching Ilya sleep, the man looking more relaxed than he ever did awake. His curls, which had been sprung free of any gel the entire time Ilya had been at the cottage – much to Shane’s utter delight – were falling into his face and Shane reached forward, gently brushing them back. Ilya snuffled a bit in his sleep, adorably, in Shane’s opinion, although he could hear Ilya’s protests already. Russians are not adorable, Hollander. We have never been adorable. This is not something we are. And even though most of the world would probably say they were a horrible match for one another, even though the entire deck was stacked against them, even though they might not be able to publicly be together for another decade… Shane couldn’t help it. He loved him. He loved Ilya Rozanov with every fiber of his being. The same things he used to hate about him, the things that used to drive Shane crazy, were now the parts about him that Shane loved, the parts he couldn’t live without. Ilya was the first person Shane had ever loved, and he desperately wanted him to be the last. His beginning and his end. And while the logistics of their relationship wasn’t easy, being with Ilya, loving Ilya, well… That was the easiest thing in the world.
