“What is this?” Ilya asked. “Ah.” Shane couldn’t quite meet his eyes as a faint blush crept across his cheeks. “Well, I wasn’t sure what the dress code would be for the party, so I laid out some options for us.” Ilya’s heart fucking stopped. “The… what is this, what is happening?” Ilya asked, wanting to be sure that he understood correctly. Shane’s blush intensified as he gave Ilya a small, unsure smile. “I don’t know Boodram very well, so I had to guess what the vibe would be. You were… you were in the shower for a long time and I was feeling anxious so I… Sorry, it’s so stupid but I just wanted to… I don’t know, show you I’m in?” Or, what if Shane didn't leave after their fight on Boxing Day?

He's in his bed in Montreal, tangled in sheets that are damp with sweat, his heart hammering so hard it hurts. The room is dark and quiet and wrong, because Ilya isn't here, Ilya is in Ottawa, two hours away, and Shane's hands are shaking as he grabs for his phone on the nightstand. His fingers fumble with the screen. It's 3:17 AM. He should... he shouldn't do this. Ilya has practice tomorrow. Today. In the morning. Shane knows this because they'd texted about it yesterday, before the Bears-Centaurs game, before Ilya had taken that nasty check in the second period that Shane had watched on his laptop with his stomach in knots, before Shane had gone to bed alone like he does most nights, before his subconscious decided to torture him with the worst thing it could conjure. He stares at Ilya's contact. The photo is from months ago, Ilya grinning at something off- camera, eyes bright, so impossibly alive that Shane's throat closes up. He needs to hear his voice. Just. Just to know he's okay. Just for a second. When Shane has a nightmare about Ilya getting injured, he phones his boyfriend. Ilya returns the call, and so much more.

“Are you still cold, moya lazan'ya?” Ilya asks, gently touching his hand to Shane’s thigh to get his attention. “Your what?” He lifts his head from where he’d been resting it against the airplane window, blinking blearily. “Lasagna?” “Yes. Look at you, with all the, uh…” The English word he’s searching for eludes him, so he simply gestures at his husband, clad in a T-Shirt, a hoodie and two jackets, both his own and Ilya’s. The latter is slightly too big even on Shane’s muscular frame, and being wrapped up in it almost makes him look small. _____ While on the airplane on the way home after a series of games with the Ottawa team, Shane is hit hard by the flu. The fever makes him emotional, and Ilya has feelings about that. Incredibly soft feelings.

Ilya watches as, with shaking fingers, Shane presses something on his phone and turns it to him.
There is an article open. Ilya sees… a photo of him at Shane’s house in Montreal. A side by side comparison of them, wearing—sharing—the same shirts, and hoodies. Shane’s car driving through the gates at Ilya’s new house.
Shane hiccups, tears streaming down his cheeks.
“They figured us out.”
A year in the life of Shane and Ilya, if they had been outed earlier.

When Roz starts speaking, frantically letting out Russian words from his hospital bed, Troy jumps in fear. “Ty emu uzhe pozvonila? Gde mama?” While Troy might not know Russian, or any other Slavic language that might have offered him some sort of context, he understands the word for mother. His heart clenches in his chest. Calling for your mom, especially when you’re hurt and confused feels instinctive. Troy is pretty sure he’d do the same thing. But the thought of coming out of your dazed state while desperately wanting your mom, and the loss of your mom coming crashing down on you must be a different type of agony. Roz starts speaking again, Russian coming to him easier than English must. “Mama? Gde moya mama?”

But against all odds, Ilya gets a cup for his new team before Shane’s retirement, their rivalry now more intense before his rival falls off the face of the earth. Then, one Stanley cup – after three decades of not bringing home any banners, Ilya Rozanov finally helps win them a Cup– The TV shuts off, effect disconcerting as two familiar silhouettes sit on a couch, a curly mop of hair and a neatly combed back wolfcut. A tiny, bald head comes into view when Ilya turns, encasing a baby in his arms, so cute and pudgy and under no dispute is definitely a Hollander-Rozanov. “...What?” he asks with a grin, a mildly annoyed expression on Shane’s face. Shane reaches out to close hands over the baby’s ears, “You watch your back, Rozanov,” he mumbles threateningly, “The moment I return on ice, your winning streak is over,” ; Ilya gets Shane pregnant. A happy accident if anything.

Shane punishes himself after the Voyageurs lose a game. Ilya saves him from himself. Shane liked to punish himself. He liked order. Rules. And when all of his strategic planning didn’t go his way, he punished himself. It was the only way to repent. It was one of the rules. Tonight, the Voyageurs had lost. Shane was the Captain, so it was his fault. Another reason for his punishments was Shane’s reaction to things that were out of his control or did not go according to plan. He tended to spiral, which also made him angry at himself. He should be able to handle things like a normal person, by bending instead of breaking. However, he’s never been like that, as far back as he can remember. Tonight, after his subsequent spiral after the game, his punishment is a cold shower. A freezing shower. He sits in the bottom of the walk-in shower at the Montreal apartment building he rents out, the one he usually meets with Ilya at. He didn’t deserve to go back to his real home. He’s been sitting here for a while, staring at nothing and letting the cold pellets of water pelt him over and over. He can barely feel it anymore. “Hollander. Shane.” A voice says. Shane looks over, through the glass door. Oh. Ilya is here. The shower door opens and he reaches in, then recoils when the water hits his arm. “Hollander, this water is freezing!” Ilya looks horrified. He hurriedly turns the handle to off and cups Shane’s cheek. “Why are you in freezing shower?” His palm is big and warm, and Shane doesn’t deserve it. However, he’s also not quite present enough to resist. He also hasn’t found his words quite yet. They’re locked up tight somewhere between his brain and his mouth. Ilya’s hand smoothes his soaked, chilly hair back. “How long have you been here?” He asks. Shane doesn’t answer, he can’t. Ilya pulls him up gently by his elbows and tugs him out of the shower. Shane can’t be bothered to be embarrassed by his nakedness, besides, they’ve seen each other nude and in compromising positions many times by now. A fluffy towel is grabbed off the hook on the wall and wrapped around Shane. Then a smaller one is used to scrub his hair. Ilya wraps his arms around him after, pulling him tight into his chest even though he’s still wet and freezing. Shane shivers violently against him. “Is okay. Is okay now.” Ilya murmurs. He pulls Shane out into the bedroom gently by the hand. Sits him down. Takes the spare clothes out of the closet and dresses him in them with care. Socks. Boxer briefs. Sweatpants. A plain t-shirt and then a hoodie. Shane doesn’t think he deserves any of it. He’s not sure if he finished his punishment sufficiently. Ilya kneels back down in front of him and rests careful palms on his knees. “Hollander.” Shane looks at him. “You should not ever do that again.” Ilya doesn’t understand that he has to. He gets up and Shane can hear him moving around the kitchen. He stays put, staring down at his socks. Ilya returns with a blender bottle filled with water and one of Shane’s electrolyte packets. He shakes it overzealously and then hands it to Shane. “Drink.” Shane drinks it diligently. He doesn’t want to disappoint Ilya more than he already has. He’s already been so bad today, he can do something right.

Realistically, Shane is more than aware he’s being irrational. There’s absolutely no reason for him to be freaking out the way he currently is. Shane is literally his name. All Rozanov did was call him his own name. Rozanov calls him by his name all the time. But it’s always his last. Never just Shane. Even though he’s been called that his whole life, the word feels unbearably intimate, coated in Rozanov’s annoyingly attractive russian accent. And that thought terrifies him. Or The tuna melt scene went differently, causing Shane and Ilya to realize their feelings a lot sooner.

This morning is not routine. This morning he didn't wake up before Ilya. This morning, Ilya decided his routine for him. Waking him up with a kiss and his breakfast already prepared. It was sweet, really, it was, (except his skin itched and he could feel his bones—) and normally Ilya doing this for him was fine, but normally it isn't his first week on a new team. He was so close to finishing this week, so close to being able to check this off his evergrowing list of things to make it through this monumental season of firsts. or, Shane is having a hard time adjusting to the teasing and familiarity and learns that he is safe here with the help of his new team

Ilya's hand continues its path up and down Shane's back, and Shane thinks again about how love is sometimes just this: a palm on the spine, moving in circles, waiting for you to come back to yourself. There is no promise of saving you—Ilya cannot save him, they both know this and are alright with it in their own ways—but there is a vow of staying, lingering in order to witness. Touching the bruise so that its pain triggers the memory that you are allowed to be touched. Outside, the snow continues its work of erasure. Inside, Shane's breathing begins to even out, every limb recalling how to be a man at rest rather than an animal fawning and freezing. The trembling subsides, wave by wave, as if Ilya's hand is smoothing it out of him. "Sleep, зайчик," Ilya says softly, his free hand coming to rest in Shane's hair. "I have you." This is not true, Shane thinks, and it is also the only true thing. ⋆ recovery, shane learns, is not a straight line. to begin to understand something, you must first name it.
