  1. Ilya Rozanov would be tempted to enact Cold War levels of biological warfare against his opponent if only Scott Hunter didn’t already look as awful as he feels. The other hockey player faces him, sending a death stare in his direction and clutching his stick in a way that would be intimidating if he weren’t Scott Fucking Hunter and if it wasn’t obvious he wasn’t trying with all his might to prevent himself from taking a nosedive onto the ice. Ilya would manage a quip if he could muster the energy to - something about how the old man should really have taken a sick day - but keeps his mouth shut, totally because he doesn’t want to kick someone when they’re obviously already down, not in any way because his own throat hurts too much to talk of course. Maybe this game will be easier than he thought; the Centaurs seem to be faring at least a little better than their big apple competitors, who seem to be in worse form, if that’s even possible considering how terrible Ilya feels, several of the opposing team coughing into fists or sniffling so loudly it hurts his already pounding head. Barrett has been borderline obsessive since the very start of whatever it is that has been making the rounds of the league, not wanting to risk getting Harris sick and although the team haven’t completely averted it, they are mostly at full capacity; Hayes on top form after being out for the last game, Luca at the tail end of the worst of it, and Boodram somehow managing to skate free from the cold that has been working its way through the rest of the team. In all honesty, they probably should have cancelled. The idea was toyed with this morning, or at the very least presented as a possibility to Ilya when he reluctantly fessed up at morning practice to the fact that he’d been running a fever since last night. It had been the fault of the New York Admirals that they didn’t withdraw, thanks to a stalemate sparked by the word on the street being that their opponents - and particularly their star captain - were struck down with this same flu and might pull out before they could. Neither team withdrew, as had become all too clear with just an hour before the game. I can play, Ilya insisted. And so here they are. Ilya’s stick catches the puck first, Hunter just a moment too slow after him. God, Ilya thinks. The poor guy should just give it up; he is sure good old Kip Grady will be somewhere in the crowds waiting for the end of the last period so he can wrangle his fiance into bed with a blanket and a mug of honey-lemon tea and enough nyquil to dose a horse or just a hockey player with a bad case of man-flu after the game. Although perhaps he is projecting. Someone from the other team - he doesn’t care to register who - checks him, and somewhere in the chaos Ilya ends up being the one to almost take a nosedive onto the ice, his balance off but whether from the loss of his ego or the blade flying from his skate without his knowledge he isn’t entirely sure. For a brief second - less than a second really - he stays like that, staring down at the ice on his hands and knees and contemplating walking out of the rink without so much as a glance back. He’s still considering it as he maneuvers himself off the ice to fix the aforementioned blade issue, but he shakes his head when someone - the coach or a trainer or perhaps someone on the bench - asks him if he wants to tap out. Besides, he doesn’t have his own bed and significant other waiting for him on the other side of this game like Scott Hunter does. Shane is god knows where, on the other side of the fucking country or something at some fucking gala event for one of his fucking sponsors or whatever and so Ilya will be returning to convalesce in his fucking New York hotel room alone after this fucking game, with only a fucking facetime call to tide him over if he’s lucky. This fucking game. This fucking city. This fucking cold. He chokes against the metallic taste coating the back of his mouth, somehow managing to suppress the coughing fit which has been threatening since the end of the first period. If he had to bet, he figures he has the best gag reflex in the entire league, but so much as thinking about the presence of his mouth guard at this moment clattering against his teeth has him fearing he might blow chunks on the ice if he isn't careful. He can only imagine what the commentators might say, the headlines the next morning. He hates this, he hisses as the Admirals level the score. His body not feeling right, not feeling like his own. He’s used to the satisfying hum of muscle memory, being where he needs to be a moment before he even thinks about it. He’s still moving fast, still playing like he always does for the most part, but typically by this point in the game adrenaline is making itself at home; right now, the only thing making itself at home is the fucking crud in his chest. Scott is the one who scored, and Ilya watches him celebrate in envious disbelief, the older hockey player seemingly having taken on a second wind during the intermission. Ilya should ask him for advice on whatever home remedy has seemingly worked its magic, but he has a strong suspicion it has something to do with the man’s fiance in the crowd; a likely promise of the healing properties of true love’s kiss… or true love’s sucking of a dick, he smirks. “Having trouble keeping up, Rozanov?” Scott remarks, although it doesn’t have the intended bite coming from a man who at present sounds like a dying cat. “Oh are you, Hunter?” he furrows his brow, hoping his own hoarse voice sounds at least a little more rugged and less ridiculous. They share a knowing glance. It’s anyone’s game really, with the playing field levelled like this but it is the Centaurs who just barely manage to take the win by the end, a just-missed save allowing them to take back the lead when it really mattered. Ilya doesn’t gloat, and the celebrations are quite frankly a subdued affair, most of the players on the ice already burying their red noses into tissues and in a rush to get off the rink. “Good game,” Scott reaches a hand out to shake Ilya’s, before he hesitates, figuring it’s maybe not the best course of action when he is blatantly contagious. “It wasn’t,” Ilya takes Scott’s hand, shakes it firmly, running the back of his other hand against his dripping nose with a smirk. “But get well soon, yes? Beating you will feel better if actually fair next time.” “Yeah this cold’s a killer. Sorry, I wasn’t thinking; I wouldn’t want to get you sick.” “Too late.”

  2. A few weeks after the All-Star Game, Scott watches a clip of Shane Hollander down on the ice and sees things a bit differently than the commentary. Scott doesn't know anything, not technically. He's never wanted to know anything — if it isn't true, casting doubt is dangerous for everyone, but if it is true, then it's even more dangerous and the fewer people that know, the better. Right? Right. So Scott doesn't know anything. Not technically. The thing is, he doesn't not know anything either. As much he's tried to bury it, he can't entirely erase the half a dozen things he's seen over the last seven years. Granted, he'd flipped on one of those spotlights himself because he'd been in a bad fucking mood, but the response had been pretty fucking definitive. Hollander had known exactly what Scott had meant and he'd come back swinging, good sport reputation be damned. Whatever the thing is he doesn't know about, not technically, it's been happening since the beginning. Since the two of them were set on high with the expectations of millions on their shoulders and assigned roles to fill: Hollander as the golden boy and Rozanov as his opposite, the one throwing the punches and pissing everyone off. The light and the dark, the angel and the devil on everyone's shoulders. It was a hell of a lot to expect of a couple of kids who happened to play good hockey and Scott has seen enough cracks to know neither image is entirely true. They're a little true, sure, but the best lies always are. Rozanov is an asshole, for one thing, but he isn't that kind of asshole, not the way Scott cares about and not the way a lot of the guys in the league are. He's a good captain, his team notoriously loves him, and Scott has seen enough at All-Stars and around the periphery to know he keeps it to players. It doesn't make him less annoying, but Scott can respect it. Hollander is both better and worse at hiding, but Scott might have bought the persona if he didn't know what he technically didn't know. Not to mention it takes a certain ruthlessness to climb the ladder the way Hollander has, to play hockey that well and win as often as he does. You don't walk off with multiple fucking cups just by being a nice guy on the ice, and Scott knows better than to think it evaporates with the last buzzer. The sudden rage when Scott threw the thing he doesn't know in Hollander's face had just been a confirmation that he was capable of it, not a surprise. Even if he does know something, there's no telling what the fuck kind of soap opera they've been acting out in the shadows. Scott had seriously side-eyed the whole Rose Landry episode and, good christ, had Boston been exceptionally brutal to play against while that was going on. Rozanov hadn't just been taunting other players those games, he'd been fucking mean, and Scott assumed he was one big bruise under his pads given the way he was playing. He sure as hell wasn't playing smart, it was actually the shittiest Scott could remember ever seeing him play, but it was brutal for everyone, and especially for Rozanov himself. Then there had been the last All-Star Game. Everyone thought Hollander and Rose Landry were still dating, but Scott had known they weren't within a few hours of being in Tampa. He'd been damn close to grabbing both the idiots by their collars and bluntly informing them they were going to discover their closet had developed glass walls unless they re-learned some fucking discretion in how they looked at each other. He'd been a little jealous, he can admit that. He still is a little jealous, or he would be if it weren't for what he's watching play out on TV. The clip's being shown on every news report even remotely sports related: Hollander crumpled unmoving on the ice as Rozanov circles him with a look of absolute horror on his face. They’re in the middle of a fucking sold out arena, on a field of white without a single shadow, hundreds of cameras and phones trained on them both, millions more people watching the live broadcast. He watches Rozanov's world shattering, the fear battling with shock on his face, while the broadcasters call it "respect" for the "enemy". Scott's stomach churns with nausea as Rozanov argues with a ref and snaps at the medics from a dozen feet away, barely looking away from where they're loading Hollander onto a gurney. A ref finally physically pushes him further back towards the bench, Rozanov not even paying attention to the fact he's heading toward the wrong team. They report Hollander had been responsive and his injuries are non-life threatening, but he's out for the season. Scott turns it off. He'd bet a large chunk of money that Rozanov played the rest of the game because there wasn't any other choice, because it was crucial to keeping up the story they've built. He had to. It's what Scott would have done in his place because they don't get to have anything else, not when anyone's watching. Not anywhere someone might look. * The Admirals aren't out of it yet, so Scott plays hockey. He's allowed that and they pay him a lot of money to do it. Luckily he likes it, because everything else kinda sucks. He looks for Kip in the stands at every home game. He's always there, still watching. He catches Scott looking for him every time, too, and even from that distance, even with the glare of the lights, he can see the sad smile Kip gives him. It breaks Scott's heart every time, but he plays better when he knows Kip's watching. Like if Scott can't give him half of what he deserves, he can at least give him that. He has more than one nightmare where Kip is, nonsensically, on the ice, playing on some nebulous other team, and he goes down the way Hollander had. * Scott plays more hockey. It's what he's good at. * It's when they win the cup, just after, when he's alone on the ice while everyone else has someone to hold onto, that he remembers watching Rozanov the day Hollander took the hit. It had looked like hell on earth, the kind you can't change and just have to live with. He knows Kip's in the stands. He looked for him earlier, the way he always does. Kip had smiled, the same sad smile.

  6. “Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking? “Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.” Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette. He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly. “I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.” Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.” —————— Or: Shane and Ilya get sent to reconciliation therapy, and of course, handle it super well.

  9. The problem is that Shane Hollander is an Alpha. No. Okay. No. Technically (by order of magnitude) the problem is that: Shane Hollander is in labor → it is happening in the middle of a game → it should not be happening at all because → Shane Hollander is an Alpha. Everyone's day gets markedly more chaotic when Shane--an Alpha--goes into labor mid- game against New York. It's a good fucking thing the Raiders are playing North Carolina.
