He’s out of his pads and jersey, in a black Under Armor shirt Kip has only ever seen in the laundry. The charge of seeing Scott like this, sizzling with energy and salty with sweat, surrounds Kip like a net and pulls him under.
He is not used to this feeling, the thrill that courses through him that this Scott—team captain, public figure—can be claimed as his. He wants to do so, but has no idea how to negotiate this new world and new arrangement. Scott scans the room and sees him, eyes bright.

Until Scott makes the mistake of saying yes to a series of press events in which newly graduated sports journalists get a chance to write a piece about the MLH.
Five times Scott gets harassed by a brand-new reporter and one time he tries to get him back.

He meant to have this conversation months ago, if he’s honest.
Truly, he’d planned on reaching out. Had tweaked his usual Instagram message, the one that both offers condolences and community. Scott didn’t figure that Rozanov would respond particularly well to that level of sincerity, especially given the lack of details around his family life – even after his father’s death had been announced by the media. Instead, he’d decided to throw in a light chirp and remove some of the apologies as a middle ground solution.

There’s a pause where Kip thinks he might have gotten away relatively scot-free, no pun intended, but then, Maria gets closer, narrowing her eyes at him in interrogation. “Are you sure?”
“I feel like you’re five minutes out from counting my pulse.”
Something sparkles in her eyes, and it makes Kip laugh for the first time all day. “That’s not a bad idea. How much does your heart rate increase when Scott walks in?” She places a hand over her own chest, making her hand thump. “Boom, boom, boom.” Her voice drops to a flat tone. “Oh no, he broke the scale.”
Kip slides another strawberry over. “Not funny, Maria.”

Rozanov follows Scott with his own Lulla’s bag, a half-step behind Scott because he stumbled slipping his sneakers off. “Rozanov, say thank you to Kip. I wouldn’t let you in here otherwise.”
Kip doubts that but he lets Scott believe it for now.
“Thank you Kip,” Rozanov says with a crooked grin.
