"I think,” Scott decides on, “I’ve at least proven I’ve got some surprises up my sleeve.”
A startled laugh bursts from Rozanov’s chest. “Yes. Yes, you have done that. I did not think you had it in you.” Before Scott can figure out if he should be insulted, Rozanov continues around his next puff of his cigarette, “Did not think anyone did. Good for you.”
“Thanks.”
Rozanov nods before frowning, like he still hasn’t said what he wants to say, but Scott’s content. What else is there for him to say?

Scott Hunter claims there are no other gay hockey players in the MLH, or at least none he's met.
Ilya Rozanov is a smart dresser, a catty bitch, and a flirt.
Kip Grady is starting to think maybe his boyfriend is a little gaydar-ically challenged, but he loves him anyway. He'll just have to show him the light, one $40 bet at a time.

Ilya Rozanov, even at eighteen in an unfamiliar country and speaking a second language, had never seemed small. But now, at… what, twenty-five? He’s standing in front of Scott with his hands clasped in front of him, shoulders hunched, looking… shy. Nervous, maybe.
Rozanov flinches when a loud laugh breaks the white noise from the party inside, and Scott realises that Rozanov’s been doing the same thing he has all these years: cataloguing who is or isn’t safe, watching, noticing, waiting.

Rozanov took another drag of his cigarette and glanced away from Scott, smile fading. “I have… certain reputation, yes?”
Scott nodded, partially because it was true—Ilya Rozanov was one of the most notorious men in the league—and partially because Scott was curious where he was going with this.
Rozanov ashed his cigarette and glared down at the sparks as they fell. “Is not accident. My reputation. Is for safety. Protective.” He shrugged. “Is not all untrue—I am asshole, I am proud to be asshole. But… I am maybe not quite the person you think I am.”
