  2. “Hollander?” a voice asks from deeper in the flat. It is decidedly not a girl’s voice. “Hollander, what is – oh.”

Yuna looks from her son to the person who has appeared behind his shoulder: Ilya Rozanov, naked except for a towel. Yuna’s eyebrows go back up as she looks from Rozanov back to Shane.

With a sigh that seems to deflate the tension in his body, Shane closes his eyes for a moment, and then finally steps aside. “Okay, maybe it’s best you do come inside.”

Yuna and David just mean to surprise their son before the season starts. Except Shane isn’t home alone – and his unexpected visitor turns out to have a problem that is right up Yuna’s alley. What would they have done without her? Probably something stupid, like pretended to get married.

    What?
    Another moment of quiet, then:
“I never kissed my boyfriend on the ice, though,” Shane muttered resentfully. Hayden’s heart thudded at the bitterness in his tone. Shane didn’t talk like that.

As Shane becomes more comfortable in his and Ilya’s relationship, he starts letting his guard down, bit by bit. Hayden is subject to some very confusing one-sided phone conversations.

After Shane and Ilya were outed through fan mail, they were still playing games on ice and fighting for a playoff spot in the regular season. They faced disappointed fans, hostile teammates, and a world that no longer felt like it belonged to them.

Ilya was fortunate enough to be traded to Ottawa—
a team widely regarded around the league as one of the most openly gay-friendly locker rooms in hockey.

    Shane was not.

The Voyageurs made their position clear—not through words, but through their actions on the ice.

    or

In two games, the television commentators witnessed Shane being iced out by his own team
isolated, ignored, and left exposed shift after shift.
    This wasn’t a mistake.
    It wasn’t a coincidence.

    It was bullying

  8. “Hey man, did the LASIK already fade? Thought it was supposed to last longer—my sister was thinking about it, and I told her how well it went for you and Jonesy.”

Hunter looks up from the table, confused, “Huh? No, my eyes are great. Still recommend it.”

“Oh, I saw the contact lens solution, and I thought…” Carter trails off. He suddenly realizes he’s prying, something he hates doing in general but learned long ago not to do with Hunter specifically. Hunter opens his mouth and then shuts it. His whole face looks like a rabbit caught in crosshairs.

“I, that was,” he stammers, pauses for a beat. “My cousin visited. Thanksgiving. She forgot hers, and I bought some for her.”

  10. Shane gets accidentally drunk and tells Hayden that he loves Ilya. Cue mental breakdowns and Hayden losing his mind at seeing Ilya Rozanov be soft and loving with his best friend. Hayden had always known that his best friend was uptight, even before they had become friends. He knew Shane had a lot of rules and a strict timetable that he never wavered from. It had not deterred Hayden from pursuing a friendship with Shane, though. He found Shane's presence comforting, he didn't have to put on any act in front of Shane, didn't have to be on all the time. In the deepest corners of his brain, he admitted to himself that Shane was the only person on the team that he wanted to hang out with outside of hockey commitments. Shane had become his best friend, his little brother very quickly, worming his way into Hayden's heart effortlessly. In the years that they had been friends, Hayden had never once seen Shane drunk or high. During the season, Shane didn't drink at all and in the off-season, he never let himself drink more than one glass of wine. Shane had told him that he had only had hard liqueur once and hadn't liked the taste of it. Which is why he was surprised when he walked into J.J.'s house to find Shane on the couch with some of the rookies, giggling his ass off with a bottle of half empty vodka cruiser in his hand. Shane gasped when he saw Hayden, bouncing off the couch and towards him. "Hayd! You're here!" Shane exclaimed, an uncharacteristic wide grin on his face. "Hey buddy, whatcha drinking there?" Hayden asked, lips curling up in amusement. "Oh, you have got to try this! It is so yummy, it's fruit juice!" Shane grinned, shoving the bottle towards Hayden clumsily. Hayden's eyebrows raised up to his hairline and he said, "Uh, that's not fruit juice, Shane. That has vodka." "No way," Shane gasped, bringing the bottle closer to his face and squinting at the wrapping. "Lemme check," Shane mumbled and took another long swig from the bottle. "Okaaayy," Hayden sighed and pulled the bottle away from Shane's mouth. "Think that's enough, you're super drunk." "Oh no, I'm drunk?" Shane asked, eyes widening as he poked himself on the cheek. He suddenly grabbed Hayden's arms and shook, babbling, "No, no, no, am I drunk? Hayd, am I drunk? I can't believe I drank during the season. Oh no! We have a game day after tomorrow! No, no, I'm gonna die. I won't - we're gonna lose and Ilya is gonna be there and he's going to be so disappointed. Fuck, no, I can't be drunk. No alcohol during hockey. God, I'm so stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid -," "Shane, buddy, breathe," Hayden interrupted, then frowned and confusedly whispered 'Ilya' under his breath. "Look, I'm gonna get you some water and drop you home and you are going straight to bed -," Hayden was cut off by the ringing of Shane's phone. "Lily!" Shane beamed at his phone, swiping on the incoming call and bringing the phone up to his ear. "Heyyy, Lily. Miss you. Where are you? Come to J.J.'s house, 'm having so much fun! We can have so much fun together!" Hayden couldn't hear what Lily said but Shane giggled and replied, "No, silly, I'm not concussed. Hayden said I'm drunk, suuuuper drunk. I drunk vodka. No, 's supposed to be drink? Drunked? Drank?" "Shane, maybe you shouldn't talk to anyone right now," Hayden said, reaching for Shane's phone. "No, he's mine," Shane pouted, cradling his phone protectively with both hands. "My baby." Lily must have said something because Shane suddenly smiled brightly, Hayden had never seen him look so happy before. "Really?" Shane's eyes had gone glassy and Hayden was seriously debating forcefully wrestling Shane into his car to drive him home if necessary. Hayden scowled when J.J. suddenly stumbled over to them, wrapping an arm around Shane's shoulders. "Why the fuck did you give him alcohol, man?" "Relax, dude. This is only, like, his second or third bottle," J.J. shrugged. "Yeah, relax, dude," Shane huffed at him before going back to listen to what Lily was saying to him. "Come on, Comeau is setting up beer pong!" J.J. exclaimed, looking drunker than Shane. He then squinted at Shane's phone and asked, "Who're you talking to anyways?" "The love of my life," Shane sighed dopily. He giggled again, in response to Lily, Hayden assumed, and said, "Talkin' 'bout you, silly-billy." Hayden removed J.J.'s arm from Shane and declared, "I'm driving him home now, he's had enough." "Noooo, I don't wanna go!" Shane whined, tapering off as he focused on what Lily was saying. His face drew into a pout the longer he listened to Lily and a minute later, he grumbled, "Fine, I'll let Hayden drive me home. 's no fair, though." "Oh, thank god," Hayden groaned, head tipping back in relief. "'k, love you," Shane muttered into the phone, dejectedly shoving it into his pocket after. "I just love him so much," Shane sighed and Hayden noticed his head lolling towards him from the corner of his eye. Hayden asked, distracted as he focused on the busy road, "You love who, buddy?" "Lily," Shane breathed.

  13. “What do you want me to say, exactly?” Shane asked, his voice very different from the one they’d usually get for interviews. Less polite and less guarded. “Do you want me to stand here and tell you details of my sex life?” Someone chuckled awkwardly and when no one said anything, Shane threw his arms out to the side just as Harris made his way towards the disaster. Shane looked the reporter straight in the eyes. “Sure! My sex life is fantastic. My husband is hot. Ten out of ten. Any more questions?” Or the one time Shane Hollander was the problem

  14. “Can I ask you something?”

There’s a flash of what looks like fear that crosses Ilya's face before he sits back, his posture slightly closed off as his arms cross in front of his chest. “Depends on what it is,” he says, eyes somewhat steely.

She gets why people are intimidated by him on the ice.

“Why Ottawa?” She knows it’s something everyone has been asking, but she feels like it’s a legitimate thing to ask. “I mean, I get maybe you’re not happy in Boston, but you could have gone anywhere.”

“Not anywhere,” he says with an almost pout.

    “But almost anywhere.”

He lets out a long breath of air through his nose. “I know it does not make sense, but it should not have to make sense to anyone but me.”

Kate tilts her head to the side, appraising him from across the table. “That’s not an answer.”

Ilya shrugs, but he holds her gaze steadily. “Maybe one day you will understand. But for now, know I am where I am supposed to be.”

And who is she to argue with that?

The fight Hayden meant to start stops cold, because Rozanov goes down like a bag of bricks out of absolutely nowhere. or: in a world where soulmates share injuries, when Marleau rams into Shane, Ilya goes down too. 16. If the percentage of gay ex-boyfriends Rose has was anything less than 70%, or if her self- esteem had been any lower, she might have been offended or hurt right now. The realization had started slowly. And still, even now, her own experience with Shane and what she knows of him only allows for the picture to change slightly and become one of him actually enjoying sex, but not anything beyond that. He is still socially uncomfortable and hates talking about sex except for that one joke that started out as one of the worst sentences Rose thinks she’s ever uttered out loud. The shy and hesitant version of Shane is still firmly cemented in her mind. Rose is curious, though. She never really stops being curious. It’s why she’s standing here, hidden, not moving a muscle or making a sound as she becomes an accidental voyeur of Shane and Ilya as Shane rides Ilya on the couch.
