Shane sat up, heart beginning to thud—not with fear, but with momentum. His brain latched on, suddenly efficient, suddenly sharp. Trades happened. Players moved. People made choices all the time that weren’t about winning cups but about living. And Ilya—God, Ilya deserved more than survival disguised as compromise.

Shane finds Ilya outside the cottage in the middle of the night. Ilya wants to stop being scared of the loons. Shane just wants Ilya. Shane reached across the bed, grumbling when he hit the mattress instead of Ilya’s ass. He blinked sleepily at his watch - 3:24 am - and then at the en suite. Empty. Where is he? Ilya was probably getting water or something. He needed to relax. Shane closed his eyes and counted to 50. Five more rounds of counting and Shane was out of bed, throwing on the Raiders hoodie Ilya tore off hours before. So much for relaxed. “Ilya?” He called out tentatively. The cottage was silent. Shane was on his way to search upstairs when he saw him. Ilya, on the dock, his back to the cottage. Two breaths later and Shane was outside, bracing against the cool wind. “What are you doing?” Even in the dark, without his glasses, Ilya was like a beacon of warmth built just for Shane. Moonlight reflected off his hair, his shoulders. He was stunning. In fuzzy silhouette, Ilya was still aching clarity. “I’m waiting,” Ilya answered, unmoving, eyes still out on the water. When he didn’t elaborate, Shane fought the quip sitting in his throat. It was always so easy to joke and tease, but Shane wanted the earnest Ilya more than anything. It didn’t stop him, though, from feeling like he was flailing for new ground. He hesitated. Despite knowing each other for years, everything was distressingly new. Shane didn’t know the new rules of engagement, and it terrified him that he might do something wrong. Shane resisted the unknown like it was a cross-ice puck pass through traffic. In a tied playoff game. But this was Ilya, and Shane couldn't fight the itch of his feet begging to walk towards him if he tried. And God knows he’d fucking tried. Shane grabbed a blanket from the deck and walked down the short trail to the dock. Ilya finally turned to look at him, smiling softly as he helped Shane wrap the quilt around them both. Their shoulders brushed against each other, and it felt like being held and struck by lightning all at once. Whatever anxiousness had crept into Shane's chest vanished. Fuck, I’m a goner. How did I ever think I was straight? “Sorry if I woke you.” Shane shook his head. “It’s okay. I mean, you didn’t. Are…are you okay?” A loon called in the distance, and Ilya jumped practically ten feet in the air. “Shit.” He sighed. “Fucking loon. So fucking loud. And ugly. Fucking ugly evil duck.” “You saw one?” “I googled it.” Tension radiated from Ilya, and Shane didn’t know what to make of it. Ilya was so rarely still. He was always moving, fidgeting with something. But right now, Ilya wasn’t just still, he was… frozen. Ilya even seemed to breathe in a way that moved his body as little as possible. It was unnerving. Another loon called, and Ilya sucked in a breath. He let it back out slowly. “Was better,” he whispered. Something desperate twisted in Shane’s stomach. “Ilya.” “Cottage is nice. Being at the cottage with you is nice.” Shane nodded slowly. Did Ilya regret coming? Did he want to leave? Ilya snaked an arm around Shane’s waist and pulled him in, dropping a kiss on his shoulder. His lips were so cold, but Shane didn’t mind. He’s always felt at home on the ice. “I want to come back. Some time. If you want me to.” “I want you to.” “Loons make nests in summer. On lakes.” He shrugged. “Not sure how you make nest on a lake.” “You looked that up?” “Yes.” “Why?” “We will be here together, in the summers, yes?” “Probably.” “The evil wolf ducks will be here, too.” As if they were listening, a particularly close loon chirped on their left. Shane thought it was still easily 10 meters or more away, but Ilya pulled back like he was under attack. It was startling to see Ilya so scared. Shane hated it. Ilya rolled his shoulders and breathed deeply, like he was trying to calm himself. Suddenly, realization dawned on Shane so hard he nearly doubled over. Ilya wasn’t pulling away. Ilya was here, at Shane’s cottage, leaning into Shane’s side and rubbing a thumb along his hip. Ilya was letting him see that something was wrong, and Shane knew the kind of gift this trust was. Fuck him if he took it for granted. “Sit down.” “What?”

“Shane,” Ilya sighs, dragging his nose along Shane's collarbone. He sounds as affected as Shane feels. He's mouthing at the first few buttons of his shirt like he wants to pop them open, his breathing growing ragged as he slips his hand under the fabric and digs his fingertips into the soft meat around Shane's hip. He's so close to where Shane's inner omega pitifully wants him. He has to stop the whine building on the back of his throat, willing his body to not move. “Ilya,” He says, barely above a whisper. We should stop, he needs to say. We don’t do this, he has to remind them. “Moy solnyshko” Ilya says, and he sounds reverent in a way that has Shane wanting to know what it means, but before he can even find his voice to ask Ilya’s hand traces a path down to his wrist, just below Shane’s scent gland. Fuck, Rozanov. Or, omega shane and the many ways he comforts alpha ilya in that tampa hotel room.

Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-27
Troy Barrett comes to Ottawa wanting stability. He tells himself he wants the team, the routine, the structure, the safety of fitting in without needing too much from anyone. This is his clean start, and he needs to do whatever it takes to keep it.
What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.
As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.
or
“Hey, Ilya?” Troy asks, already regretting it. “I was actually going to ask you about someone.”
The moment he says Shane Hollander’s name, the locker room goes quiet, and Troy knows he’s crossed a line he didn’t fully understand.
Or

They sat in silence for a few seconds and watched the surf rolling in and out, in and out. Shane eased one knee up, resting his arm across it, watching Ilya out of the corner of his eye with infinite patience. “You wanna talk about it?” he asked, voice soft enough that the wind almost stole it. He did want to talk. His chest was full of words. Too full. But the idea of opening all that up? Of watching Shane recoil, or worse, watching him care? It was unbearable. The thought of being comforted by Shane, of feeling that warmth and knowing he couldn’t keep it, nearly crushed him. Ilya kept his eyes on the water, jaw tight. Shane reached out slowly and carefully and let the tip of one finger trace the outside of Ilya’s forearm. Just a whisper of contact. A question, not a demand. Ilya looked at him. Shane gave a small tilt of his hand, beckoning him closer. “Come here.” **** A deviation from the All-Star weekend in Tampa: Instead of finding Shane on the bench, it’s Ilya alone with his ghosts and falling apart in ways he never lets anyone see. Until Shane sits beside him. The tide is ceaseless and the night is heavy. Canon diverges; feelings don't.

"I know I'm not tehnically your mother and I don't want to overstep here but I need you to know that I'm so insanelly proud of you and that both me and David are here for you forever. I can't even imagine how it must've felt like living your life carrying that burden on your back for all those years but we're here to take the load off, in whatever manner you want us to (...) "So, if that means motherly cuddling sessions, watching some cheesy cartoons or Hallmark movies let be it. If that means you calling us in the middle of the night because you had a panic attack and didn't want to bother Shane we'll be fine with that either. I just don't want you to be all alone when something like this happens." *** Or: Ilya has a nightmare about his mom while Shane is playing a game in New York. Just like every season, the Ottawa Centaurs organise a family day. And just like every season, Ilya intends to skip it. He's convinced otherwise and surprised once he gets there. Set between Heated Rivalry and The Long Game, but not spoiler-free for TLG. “Fine,” Shane said, leaning in to kiss Ilya. “But you’ll have to go to the Centaurs’ family day, or this is all off the table.” If this was how all blackmail worked, then Ilya was suddenly very much a fan of the concept. “I will go to the Centaurs’ family day,” Ilya promised solemnly. “And then you will be naked in a hotel room for me. Are you happy now? Can we continue making dinner?”

“When did you start feeling like this?” she asks. “It started in Detroit in December, last year.” “Do anything out of the ordinary then?” “No, I do not—” he comes to a complete stop, and Ash walks ahead of him for a few steps before turning. “What? What is it?” The picture swirls in front of him like vibrant water colours splashing on a canvas. Cliff beckons him over to where he and Victor are perched on their bikes, and Victor holds his phone out to him. The headline is clear: Is Rose Landry dating MLH star Shane Hollander? A pit forms in Ilya’s stomach, cramping uncomfortably as if carved with a rusted knife, and distantly he recalls feeling the same way back in December. There is no fucking way that’s been the problem. •— or, hot off the press from my tl after episode 4: ‘ilya is the first alpha to go through rejection sickness’

He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. Ilya’s mother had died when he was twelve. By the time he was truly an orphan, Ilya had spent most of his life without her than he had with her in it. He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. It was a tradition across the league where the players’ mothers came for the weekend, spending time with the team for a brunch, a skate and some fun activites, and then traveling with the team to cheer them on at a game. It was fun! Everyone loved it! It was a way to appreciate the women in their lives who sat in the cold to watch them play and drove them to practice early in the morning and nursed their many bumps and bruises along the way. Not that Ilya would know. It wasn’t his first time, of course. His whole childhood he had gotten used to not looking up. Not as his classmates cheered at the sight of their mothers picking them up from school. Not as a child when he had gotten hurt and wanted someone to comfort him like other children got when they skinned their knees. Not as his teammates turned into babies the moment they scored their first professional goals and saw their mothers in the crowds or heard their proud voices over the phones. No. Ilya had trained himself. He had gotten used to keeping his eyes fixed on what was in his hands and Ilya had always made sure there was something in his hands. A phone, a puck, tape. Something in his hands to keep him occupied so he didn’t have to listen to what he never had. In Boston it had been his gear and then his phone, texting Jane and wondering if Shane turned into the same gushy child the rest of the players in the league got the moment their mothers stepped into the locker room with skates in their hands. His rookie year, the social media girl had admitted that she had made sure her team of interns knew not to pester Ilya that weekend for content. Her name had been Eliza and she had been kind. She hadn’t made a big thing of it. Just quiet gave Ilya some peace when he’d been dreading it for weeks. Ilya had made a fool of himself eating disgusting American snacks for a video for her to make up for the thoughtful gesture. But Ilya couldn’t hide away anymore. Not now that he was in Ottawa. For one, he was the captain and that came with a certain level of expectations. He was meant to set an example. Some people didn’t know how lucky they were to have mothers who embarrassed them. For another, his new team was annoyingly perceptive of his mood. In Boston, his teammates knew when to avoid him and not push for more. Ilya never told them and no one ever asked and he’d liked it this way. But the Centaurs were a different team. They cared about him and he loved them more than he thought himself capable of loving a group of people. The Centaurs were practically vibrating with excitement as the weekend steadily approached and Ilya didn’t want to ruin it. So, he put on a smile and tried not to wince at the sharp pain bursting behind his ribs as he forced himself to watch the first wave of mothers that came through the door for the team brunch. Wyatt and Evan waved down their mothers as if they couldn’t see them from ten feet away. Nick Chouinard took his mother’s luggage while playfully teasing her about over packing. Bood picked his mother off her feet in a hug that made even Ilya’s bones ache just watching. Each of them, elite athletes in their primes who had knocked out a few teeth and had mouths that could make even him blush sometimes. But they were all just big softies at heart. Ilya tried to stay out of his own head. He played his part. He stood up and greeted every one of their guests, charming and assuring them that yes, their darling boys absolutely did not get up into any trouble at all in the hotel rooms. They were perfectly good, well behaved angels who were always in bed on time and never in threat of being arrested ever. Each and every one of them cooed and awed over him until their sons got jealous and then Ilya made his excuses to find a quiet corner to nurse his headache and the ache he couldn’t shake from his lungs that made it hard to breathe. The room was a labor of love. The conference room had a wall of windows that looked out over the skyline of Ottawa where snow was trickling from some soft grey clouds in the sky. Several round tables were draped in table clothes with the team colors. Strings of fairy lights had been wrapped around center pieces of beautiful flower arrangements of white roses and sprigs of lavender. Several of the mothers had made a stop at the mimosa bar where freshly squeezed orange juice was waiting next to bottles of champagne and garnishes of raspberries and cranberries and strawberries and pretty much any berry catering could get their hands on. Brunch was a relaxed affair with a buffet of eggs, waffles, bacon, sausage, steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce, and more fruit arranged in the shape of a peacock. There was an entire table dedicated to chocolate sweets and cheese. Music was playing softly in the background and Harris had set up a photo booth where Ilya was sure many of the mothers would be dragging their sons after a few more mimosas.
