  1. “Shane says you are smart. You went to university before you were drafted, yes?” Rozanov’s eyes were twinkling again. He wasn’t Shane’s boyfriend right now, he was the Russian Menace.

“Yeah, I mean, I did two years. You didn’t go to college, did you?”

“No, so I have to do my own readings, my own studies. You must have done philosophy courses?”

Was Rozanov mining for chirping material? What the fuck? “I, no I took like…a writing seminar. And um, a civics course. Plus, like, math.”

Rozanov blinked at him, again. “Math.”

    “Yeah, math.”

“Oh. So you are a mathematician? You study calculus? Linear algebra? Discrete mathematics?”

What in the fuck is discrete mathematics? “I dunno, no. It was like, y equals mxb squared, or whatever. You know, algebra.”

“Algebra.” Rozanov’s eyebrows shot up his face. “Like for a child? American university gives you primary school lessons?”

    OR

Hayden Pike confronts Rozanov about his relationship with Shane. It doesn't quite go as he expected.

  2. [Cliff chews on the inside of his cheek, staring down at his dark phone. The reddit people said ‘just wait’ and ‘be supportive’, like waiting and being supportive weren’t two total opposites. And ‘waiting’ feels too close to ‘pretending’, too much like doing nothing, and Tess always said doing nothing was a choice and not an excuse and—well, she said a lot of things. But either way, it feels like giving himself an out, so Cliff takes a deep breath and makes himself use the only play he thinks he has left:

    Cliff (12:02): dude come on

    Cliff (12:02): please]

In the aftermath of realizing who Roz's Montreal Chick actually is, Cliff knows that Roz doesn't know that Cliff knows about Hollander. But Cliff's not going to let something like knowing stop him from having a bros back with the whole...secret closeted gay love thing.

He's got reddit, he's got twitter. He can figure this out. And he's got one other person he knows is in the know—Hayden Pike.

Ilya lies on the ground and looks up at the stars and waits to die.
    The pavement is cold.
Ilya wonders if his mother was cold when she died. He thinks maybe not, since she didn’t die in a deserted alleyway in Vancouver. But she did die at home, and maybe that was even colder.

In a world where the Cold War ended but the Iron Curtain never fell, Ilya Rozanov is the most promising figure skater in Russia. At only 19, he’s an easy candidate for gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, one of the only times Russia allows its citizens to leave the USSR.
And then one mistake means Russia will never let him come back. Hollander won’t stop trying to talk to him, but the last thing Ilya wants to do is talk to the man who ruined his life. He might be stuck in Canada, a refugee, for the rest of his life, but that doesn’t mean he has to talk to Hollander ever again.
He wanders Vancouver aimlessly and doesn’t think about Russia, or Hollander, or the ice that can never be home again.

  5. When Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov arrive in Ottawa, everyone expects the hard part to be hockey.

What they don’t expect is how difficult — and how hopeful — it will be to finally build a life together.

As the Centaurs rebuild, Shane and Ilya navigate new teammates, new expectations, and the unfamiliar challenge of letting their relationship exist outside of stolen moments and long-distance phone calls.

Because it turns out, being on a losing hockey team might be the easy part.

Learning how to have a future together is something else entirely.

  7. “I saw you with Rozanov earlier,” he mentions, trying to sound casual. “I was surprised he wasn’t immediately telling you how weak your backhand is.”

Shane grins a little. “Oh, do you also think my backhand is weak, Hayden?”

Well, it’s not the best part of Shane’s hockey skillset, but Hayden assumes that Shane knows this too. “I don’t think there’s anything about the way you play hockey that anyone should consider weak,” he says.

“Thanks, Hayden,” Shane replies genuinely, like he isn’t the best player in the NHL. “Rozanov was fine. We were just catching up.”

Does anyone just catch up with Ilya Rozanov? Is that possible without him chirping you? Hayden has never experienced this.

Hayden is invited to his first All-Stars game in 2017 and he is very excited to go. As he gets to know the All-Stars from the other teams, makes fast friends with Carter Vaughn and even admits that Boston is kind of good, he also accidentally discovers that Shane is in a relationship. With Ilya Rozanov.

In chapter 2, Ilya deals with the consequences of Hayden finding out as he slowly befriends Hayden, though he will of course deny this.

  8. Ilya Rozanov has always understood the power of a name.

On the ice, it’s a threat.
    In headlines, it’s a brand.
    In Boston, it’s a chant.

But in Moscow, it was once a lullaby.
And in Shane Hollander’s voice, it becomes something softer. Something dangerous. Something that makes Ilya want more than he was ever meant to have.

From a golden kitchen in Moscow to the roar of Boston crowds, from hotel rooms and tuna melts to hospital monitors and wedding vows, this is the story of how a boy who learned what silence feels like finds someone who refuses to stop saying his name.

And maybe—just maybe—that’s what saves him.

  9. And she’s pressing Tupperware dishes into his hands, full of turkey and potatoes and all the strange side dishes, and he suddenly aches with how much he misses home. He misses the foods he knows, and the holiday he’s used to, and in a strange way, he even misses Papa and Alexei.

"Spasibo," he blurts, before catching it. "Sorry. That is thank you in Russian. My brain is tired. Um… is hard, with language."

    She just laughs.

"Well, spasibo for coming tonight, sweetheart," she says, pronouncing it all wrong. She turns to yell over her shoulder. "Brad! Your rookie is heading out! Come say goodnight!"

"Fucking moron." Cliff mutters. "Who doesn't like eating pussy? Well. I mean." He darts a glance out of the corner of his eye. Rozanov chuckles into the mouth of his beer. "Marley, you know how much pussy I've eaten?" "I just meant--I wasn't trying to be insensitive. I know Hollander's gay." "Mm. True, Shane would cry." He tilts his beer into his mouth then, so Cliff almost doesn't hear him say, "Different for him with cock, though." Cliff laughs. "You're a fuckin' dog, Rozy." "Whaaat? I'm just saying, my husband? Fucking lo-o-ves to suck cock. Loves it." Cliff is just trying to be a good friend. He's not realizing anything about himself at all.

  14. When Shane collides with Cliff Marlow during the Montreal vs Boston game in April of 2017, Ilya has to get through the evening not knowing how he's doing. He eventually confides in his roommate Cliff, who subsequently invites himself onto Ilya's trip to the hospital the next morning.

“Ask,” Ilya said flatly, trying not to admit to himself that he probably knew what he was about to be asked.

“What is your relationship with Shane Hollander?” Marlow asked.

He didn’t ask ‘are you and Shane Hollander in a relationship?’. If he asked that, Ilya might have laughed and told him everything. As it was, he considered lying. He was pretty sure that at this point, Marlow would believe whatever Ilya told him. It was apparently clear to Marlow that something was different about Shane and Ilya, so if Ilya told him they were friends and that Shane had been reaching out to him about his father, Marlow would believe him. It technically wasn’t untrue.

It also wasn’t covering the part where they’d been fucking since they were nineteen years old.

  15. Shane and Ilya decide to attend the NHL Awards after their first season playing together for the Ottawa Centaurs. As Ilya sneaks out for a cigarette, he comes across an old friend and catches up with him. “You guys should have hyphenated,” Marlow commented. “Used both last names. Like Rozanov-Hollander. Or Hollander-Rozanov, if you want to go alphabetically.” “Would have been hard to fit on a jersey,” Ilya said. “And is a mouthful.” To his surprise, Marlow grinned. “Good point,” he said. “So how has the first year of married life been treating you?”
