  1. “Fuck,” Shane heard himself say, pulled out of whatever moment they’d just shared. “The lights turn off automatically at a set time. I should go turn them back on. I need to see to clean the ice again.” Shane was rambling at this point. “OK,” Ilya started, “Can I help you with ice?” Shane was confused. “What?” “We did my job together. Now we do yours. Is only fair.” He couldn't wrap his head around the fact that the fucking Captain of the Boston Bears, Ilya Rozanov, was the same person as the man next to him. It was very confusing. But who was Shane to refuse that offer? Or: Shane got injured before he could meet Ilya and now works as a Zamboni driver at Ilya's practice rink.

  2. Ilya recalls his mother in fragments: her voice, gentle in his ear; her curls, warming his cheeks as she wrapped him in an embrace; the way her eyes crinkled, as she brushed his hair back and said, “You are getting so tall now, Ilyusha. What am I going to do about my very tall bear?” Ilya Rozanov has never belonged to anyone but himself. An Ilya character study, tracing canon events.

Shane and Ilya are still learning parts of each other. Shane drops for the first time. With a timid knock on the door, Shane barely had time to regret it before it swung open. He was greeted by an already shirtless Ilya, eyes dark and intent, hands already on him, tugging him over the threshold like Shane might vanish if he hesitated. The door shut behind them with a solid click, sealing them off from the hallway, the sound sharp enough to make Shane suck in a breath. Their lips crashed together immediately. Messy, desperate, all teeth and breath. Shane made a small, broken noise into Ilya’s mouth as he was pushed back against the door, palms flattening uselessly against Ilya’s chest as if he could slow this down. He didn’t want to. He couldn’t. Ilya’s grip was unyielding at his hips, grounding him even as Shane’s pulse skittered wildly. The door was cool against his spine, a brief shock before heat swallowed him again. Clothes were handled poorly, fingers fumbling, tugging, snagging fabric in growing impatience. Shane whined when Ilya pulled away just long enough to drag his shirt over his head, chasing his mouth like he was starving. They stumbled toward the bed, half-falling, half-laughing, refusing to fully separate even as barriers were peeled away and dropped to the floor. Shane’s hands shook as he reached for Ilya, breath already coming too fast, chest tight with need. “Rozanov—” Shane begged when Ilya finally pulled back, the loss of contact making his head spin. Ilya quickly shushed him, thumb pressing firmly under Shane’s chin, forcing him to look up. His expression softened just a fraction before he kissed him again, slower, deeper, like he was claiming him. Shane melted instantly, knees threatening to give out. The bed hit the backs of Shane’s legs and Ilya didn’t hesitate, guiding him down with a steady hand between his shoulder blades. Before the hit the bed Ilya flipped him, Shane landing on his hands and knees. Ilya pushed him down, hand smoothing down his back as Shane practically collapsed onto the mattress, chest pressing into the pillows. Shane shifted restlessly, hips rocking without thinking, already chasing friction. The sheets bunched under his fists as he let out a shaky breath he couldn’t seem to control. “Good, Hollander.” The words hit him like a switch. Shane went pliant, then restless again, caught between melting and writhing. Ilya muttered something low in Russian, the sound curling around Shane’s nerves as he kissed his shoulder, then along his spine. When Ilya blanketed over him briefly, the weight made Shane groan, back arching instinctively. “Please,” Shane breathed, barely audible, not even sure what he was asking for anymore. Ilya shifted back, hands firm on Shane’s thighs, kneading into muscle with deliberate pressure. Shane shuddered at the touch, breath breaking when Ilya leaned forward. A helpless whine tore from his throat, loud and unfiltered, his hips jerking forward before he could stop himself. “Shane,” Ilya warned quietly, but there was amusement threaded through it. “I can’t—” Shane gasped, words tangling as Ilya worked with maddening patience. His fingers clawed at the sheets, knuckles white, every nerve screaming for more. “Rozanov, please, please—” “Relax, Hollander. I’ve got you.” Ilya’s voice was calm, grounding, infuriatingly steady. Shane’s nerves were already sprinting ahead of him, frantic and oversensitive, his body trembling under Ilya’s hands. The soft click of a cap made Shane jolt despite himself, a sharp inhale tearing out of him. “So jumpy today,” Ilya mused, spreading warmth over his fingers. Shane swallowed hard, hips rocking again, unable to stay still. “I need you,” he said, voice breaking. “Rozanov please, I need you inside me.” “We prep first.” Ilya kissed the base of Shane’s spine, lingering there just long enough to make Shane whine before pulling away. When the pressure finally came, Shane gasped, forehead pressing into the pillow. “That’s good,” Ilya murmured. “Relax.” Shane tried. He really did. His hands fisted tighter in the sheets, breath stuttering, every inch of him buzzing with sensation. Heat crawled up his spine, pooling low and sharp, his body betraying him as he pushed back instinctively, desperate and uncoordinated. This angle was too much. Everything felt sharper, deeper, overwhelming in the best and worst way. His eyes glazed over before squeezing shut, mouth falling open as a broken sound slipped free. “Rozanov—” Shane cut himself off with a whine, the name dissolving into noise as Ilya murmured something approving above him, hands steady, presence firm, letting Shane unravel at his own frantic pace. ———————- Ilya shushed him again, voice firm this time, cutting through the static in Shane’s head. “You’re okay. Let me in, Hollander.” Shane nodded, or thought he did. Everything felt disconnected, like his body was several seconds behind his thoughts. The pressure built and shifted until it tipped him clean out of himself, sensation blurring into something too big to hold all at once. “Are you ready?” “Please.” The word fell out of him raw and automatic, stripped of meaning except want.

  5. Why he was putting up a tree for less than three days was beyond Ilya’s understanding, but it was cute anyway, and afforded him the best view in the house as the multicoloured lights bathed Shane’s soft skin in diffused rainbows as he meticulously placed ornaments on the branches. Small frowns and pleased smiles as he found places for the obscene amount of small silver bells he was for some reason in possession of. Ilya hummed, content. “What?” Shane asked, glancing back at him, and Ilya shrugged with a smirk. “Ilya. What?” or, Shane and Ilya spend their first Christmas Eve together

  6. “You can prove it? What, that Rozanov is your Boston girl?” Shane nods, and Hayden looks at him with disbelief. “Go ahead, then. Prove it.” He gestures at Shane, urging him to do so. “Fine. I will.” Shane pulls his phone out from his pocket with determination and unlocks it. He opens his messages with Lily and presses call in the top corner. The contact page for Lily fills his screen as the call connects. He turns the phone to show Hayden the screen then puts it on speakerphone. Hayden crosses his arms and watches intently as they wait for the call to connect. It rings four times before the call connects. “Ilyaaa.” Shane says into the speaker before Rozanov can greet him. He ignores the way his mouth pulls into a grin when he hears the response. “Hollander?”

  15. For as long as Ilya has remembered, there were five letters neatly printed in the crease of his arm either in vivid black or as a ghost of his memory. He is four when he learns that it is a soulmark. He is six when he realises his parents do not have each other's names. He is eight when he works out the name is probably from the English speaking world. He is ten when he works out it is a boy’s and receives a slap across the face for asking. He is twelve when he buries his hopes with his mother. Fate is what men make for themselves, hopes and opportunities his father states harshly, hand on each son’s shoulder at the funeral but Ilya sees the pill bottle in his dreams as if it is as real as the alcohol on the coffee table and thinks maybe what his father made was graves for more than just his mother. He is fourteen, fresh off international scouts noticing him for the first time, when his father takes him to a clinic with a leaking ceiling and a stone faced doctor who takes a stack of notes and a bottle of vodka, the expensive kind, and lasers the soulmate mark off him as Ilya screams and begs. He carves each letter of Shane’s name into the wooden slat under his bed as tears of pain and frustration blur his vision and he promises himself he will escape. He’s sixteen when he feels the scar at his arm tingle as he watches the Canadian junior team face off against the Americans. Shane. It cannot be. His arm tingles every time Shane has the puck. It does not matter, his father hisses, realising the same moment Ilya does, grabbing his arm and viciously stabbing his still lit cigarette into the scarred flesh. ‘That is done with, Ilya.’. His arm burns but not as harshly as the eyes Ilya cannot pull from the screen. Another burn. Another. Every hit perfectly placed for the letters that no longer show on Ilya’s flesh. He’s seventeen when he meets his soulmate, and he knows it's him, he can feel it, and Shane is so kind but Ilya has been trained to only respond to harsh demands and expectations, informing him there are many Ilyas’ in Russia. Hope blooms and he’s ready to follow, anywhere really, anywhere that isn’t back to where he came from because Shane is where he is supposed to be but he has to check and its heavy, the weight of his father’s victory when Shane says ‘yeah I guess you are right’ and leaves with his handshake and his polite smile and the remains of Ilya’s heart in his hands. He’s twenty seven when Shane tells him he’s pretty sure there are millions of Ilya’s in the world but only one for him, face set and determined as he stands barefoot and ready to fight. One arm is still in a sling and bruises are fading into his face, and to Ilya he has never looked more beautiful. Ilya got used to taking what he could get, ignoring the imprint of his own name on Shane’s foot, aided by Shane’s quirk of keeping his socks on and how shy he is in general, reaching for his clothes before Ilya has come down from the high and retreating back behind the wall only Ilya is allowed to pass. “Mine is gone, my father-” “Your father is dead,” Shane snaps, and then the anger seems to drain out of him as he grabs Ilya’s wrist with his good hand and slowly traces his hand up his arm to the crease of his elbow, touching the scarred flesh, “I’m here.” Simple. Ilya could say a thousand different things and they would be a thousand different people’s words. Shane grows nervous in his silence and takes a step back, a cold horrible feeling spreading in Ilya’s stomach when he does it. He’s blowing it. The moment he hoped for, denied he hoped for, hoped for again, and he’s blowing it. “Ilya…I get it ok? I’m weird and boring and you probably think that I’m no fun and wish it was someone else but-” “No!” Shane was the one who walked away from Ilya. Only so far though, only ever so far, as if they were not just soulmates but linked by a red string of fate carrying across the oceans, between continents, drawing them both to the ice that could unite them. Hockey has been Ilya’s downfall and his salvation, his family in ruins and yet Shane in front of him. It was the excuse for him to be forbidden, it is the very reason he probably should still be forbidden and yet it is fate. There is nothing more natural in the universe than stepping forward and dropping to his knees and pressing his index and middle finger to his own name at Shane’s ankle. “I am sorry. My mark…” “It’s still there Ilya,” Shane murmurs as he awkwardly crouches and returns his hand to its former place, over the marred skin, “It feels…right? Mine is where no one can see it. Yours is…no one would know. But we know, Ilya. We know. Come to the cottage. Give us a chance.” “I did. I said to you,” and he has to pause and regain his composure, the wall that only Shane gets passed on his side, “I tell you, many Ilya’s in Russia. That day. In juniors. I….was waiting.” “I know,” Shane murmurs, “M’sorry. I was scared. But Ilya….m’not afraid anymore.” Ilya cups his chin and feels Shane tremble under his touch, “This is a lie I think.” Shane inhales and then exhales deeply, and Ilya thinks there are many better places for this conversation than kneeling on the floor of the hotel room Ilya should have left days ago but he couldn’t bring himself to leave the city while Shane was still in the hospital. “Okay, I’m terrified,” Shane says flatly, blinking rapidly as he makes himself hold Ilya’s gaze, and no matter how hard it is with people when it matters he always holds Ilya’s gaze, “But I’m not afraid of us anymore, Ilya. Come home.” Home.
