If the percentage of gay ex-boyfriends Rose has was anything less than 70%, or if her self- esteem had been any lower, she might have been offended or hurt right now. The realization had started slowly. And still, even now, her own experience with Shane and what she knows of him only allows for the picture to change slightly and become one of him actually enjoying sex, but not anything beyond that. He is still socially uncomfortable and hates talking about sex except for that one joke that started out as one of the worst sentences Rose thinks she’s ever uttered out loud. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. This was so unexpected, she’d honestly just been waiting for their first time together to judge if he was actually into women or not, she’d even prepared her whole ‘I don’t mind my boyfriend being gay’ speech but she’d never had a partner cheat on her before. Well she wasn’t sure if he was actually cheating yet. It took her everything to wait until morning. But when Shane finally awoke she asked that damn question. "Who is Lily?" (OR: Rose finds an asleep Shane looking at a text thread with Lily. Only she'd never heard of a Lily before and feared the worst. Luckily for her, Shane explained everything.
