He wishes he had more practice interacting with normal families. Surprisingly, it’s David who speaks first. “I should cook something,” he says with a soft smile, “What?” David empties what remains in his glass and smiles at Ilya, “Hockey isn’t the only thing those two have in common. Both of them need some comfort food and their favorite drink after a stressful day.” he stands up, “This is good to know, Shane sometimes stresses a lot,” Ilya finishes his drink as well, “can I help?” Or: Yuna leaves the cottage, and Shane follows her, leaving a confused Ilya sitting alone with David Hollander for the first time. This has all the potential to become the most awkward conversation in Ilya's life, but instead... David asks him to make pasta with him.

Troy Barrett comes to Ottawa wanting stability. He tells himself he wants the team, the routine, the structure, the safety of fitting in without needing too much from anyone. This is his clean start, and he needs to do whatever it takes to keep it.
What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.
As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.
or
“Hey, Ilya?” Troy asks, already regretting it. “I was actually going to ask you about someone.”
The moment he says Shane Hollander’s name, the locker room goes quiet, and Troy knows he’s crossed a line he didn’t fully understand.
Or

Having a child is like having a second heart beating outside of your body. You carry them, and you hold them in your arms for the very first time, and you soothe them when they cry. You protect them, and keep them safe, and you try and instil them with all the skills and attributes they need to succeed, to thrive, to be happy. You do that for as long as you can…as long as they will allow you. And then you let them go. You send them out into the world, and hope with everything in you that it doesn’t break them.

Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.
“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.
And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.
Just once. Just a single nod.
Why did he have to nod?
“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”
“Of course.”
Of course.
“Was it better?”
“Yes.”

Shane’s conversation with Rose is secretly recorded. Months later, after the All-Star game and Ilya’s confession in Russian, the video gets leaked online. Shane is outed to the world while Ilya is in Russia, and must now finish the 2016-2017 season with the entire world in on his secret.

At first, Yuna thought she saw a ghost. When Rozanov appeared next to her son, at first she didn’t recognize him. She had seen his picture on tv or on tabloids countless times, so it was not like she didn’t know what he looked like, but in those ten years the antagonism between him and her son had grown so much that he resembled, in her mind, a mythological creature. It was like facing a folkloristic monster that you had seen in books and never thought could actually exist. But there he is, standing still behind Shane, wearing a Boston’s t-shirt – the audacity! – his hands crossed in the front like a young scholar waiting for the teacher to judge his polished uniform, in complete silence, while Shane is mumbling some sort of explanation. And then Shane says: “This is Ilya.” ~ * ~ Yuna and David had known about Ilya Rozanov since he first crossed their son's path. But after that day at the cottage, they discover a whole new aspect behind the mask that Ilya has worn for all those years.

While David rifles through the pantry, Ilya takes a deep breath. This is not his family. He’s here for Shane, because Shane needs him. He doesn’t—he needs to be the steady one right now. Because if Shane sees him freak out then Shane will just freak out more, and that’s not fair. Especially not when, objectively, intellectually, Ilya knows that there’s nothing to freak out about now. But the truth is, Ilya is nervous. or, ilya and david share a moment while shane and yuna go outside. set during s1e6.

“What Hollander? Never seen a pocket pussy before?” Shane snorts, he’s seen a pocket pussy before- but this one is a little different. It’s shaped like an egg. He frowns. Ilya takes the egg-shaped object out of the bag, grinning as he unravels the packaging, “Is Japanese sex toy. I bought it online.” Or Ilya makes a sex itinerary for his schedule-loving husband.

"Do you like spicy food?' David asks. American spicy was always questionable. Ilya's been to restaurants where the pinnacle of spice was ominous salty, orange, vinegar-y sludge souped over chicken wings. But he's also had his fair share of dinners cooked by Marlow's wife who put exotic peppers in rice. When he tried to cool the fire burning an ulcer in his belly with her homemade drink, he was disastrously surprised by the added torture of ginger down his throat. "Yes," he lies, coolly. Because now was not the time to be an asshole. David Hollander just watched him press his son up against a glass door and caress him in ways no parent needs to see. Ilya can take the stupid gamble on what the man calls spicy.

[Spoilers for Episode 6 of Heated Rivalry] Ilya watched as Shane followed his Mom outside. Shane had left with a parting glance at Ilya that was probably trying to tell him something, but Ilya couldn’t figure out what exactly. Was he supposed to stay put? Or should he go after Shane, just in case something went wrong after all? He was about to get up, maybe just to check out of the window really quick that Shane was fine, but before he could move, he heard David clear his throat. Right, Shane’s Dad was still here, sitting opposite him and looking at him expectantly.

David doesn’t have any recollection of leaving Shane’s place. He sort of comes back to himself halfway down the gravel road, settling back into his body, into reality, and has to pull over at the turnaround where the gravel meets pavement so he can breathe. It’s only ten minutes back to their cottage, eight when Yuna drives and she will immediately know that something is wrong so he has to get himself together and pray she’s distracted enough not to notice that something is wrong. No, he thinks, slamming his palms on the steering wheel, not wrong. That isn’t the right word. It’s just not his story to tell.
