Finding the Real Shane Hollander by ultigirl
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-01-10
Shortly after Shane joins the Centaurs, he begins to realize that things are different with this team. He might not have to keep so much of himself so tightly under wraps, but he's not totally sure what that means. After years of hiding and carefully curating his safe, boring Canadian hockey Golden Boy image, Shane isn't sure who he is or who he wants to be as an out hockey player and the husband of effortlessly sexy Ilya Rozanov. He's worried he will never look the part or feel comfortable in his own skin. During a West Coast road trip, he meets up with Rose for brunch and asks for a little help. The restaurant Rose had chosen was aggressively Californian—all white linen and succulents and sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. Shane felt conspicuous just sitting there, like his Canadian practicality was somehow visible, a beige smudge against all that brightness. Rose, of course, looked like she belonged. She always did. Today it was a sundress and oversized sunglasses pushed up into her hair, effortless in a way Shane had never figured out how to be. "So," she said, spearing a piece of avocado from her omelet, "You know I love to take you shopping and dress you up. I'm thinking we hit Melrose after this. There's this new place Miles told me about—very edgy, very now. Then maybe that vintage shop on Fairfax, and—" "Rose." She paused, fork halfway to her mouth. "What?" Shane stared at his eggs. He'd been turning this over in his head for weeks, trying to figure out how to say it, whether to say it at all. But things were different now. He was different now. Or trying to be. "I need help," he said. Rose set down her fork. "Okay. With what?" "With—" He gestured vaguely at himself. "This. All of this. I don't know how to—" The words stuck. He forced them out anyway. "I don't know how to be sexy." For a moment, Rose just stared at him. Then she laughed—a bright, startled sound that carried across the restaurant. Shane felt his face flood with heat. Stupid. This was stupid. He never should have said anything. He was already pushing back from the table, already constructing the polite excuse that would get him out of here, when Rose grabbed his hand. "Shane. Shane, wait. I'm sorry." Her grip was firm, her expression shifting from amusement to something softer. "I wasn't laughing at you. I swear. It's just—do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds coming from you?" "Forget it." His voice came out stiff. "It's fine. I shouldn't have—" "No, listen to me." Rose leaned forward, not letting go of his hand. "I know a lot of attractive people. It's literally my job to know and hang out with attractive people. And I have never— never—met anyone as hot as you who has so little idea how attractive they are." She shook her head, something like wonder in her voice. "Shane. Come on. You pulled both Rose Landry and Ilya Rozanov, and you think you aren't sexy?" Shane's flush deepened, but for different reasons now. "That's part of the problem." "What do you mean?" He looked down at their joined hands, trying to find the words. "Ilya is... you've seen him. He's so hot. And it's effortlessfor him—the way he moves, the way he dresses, the way he just exists in the world. He walks into a room and everyone looks at him." Shane swallowed. "And then there's me. Standing next to him. And I worry that when people see us together, I look like his... his boring Canadian little brother." Rose's expression flickered. "Does Ilya make you feel that way?" "No." The answer came immediately, certain. "No, he's always telling me I'm beautiful. That I'm sexy. That he can't believe he gets to—" Shane stopped, ears burning. "But that's usually when we're, um. Naked." Rose's lips twitched, but she didn't laugh this time. "Okay." "I want to figure out how to be that person when we're not naked. How to be sexy beside him, out in the world. For him, but also for—" Shane struggled. "For me. I want to feel like I belong next to him. Like I'm not just... tolerated there." "Shane." Rose's voice was gentle. "You know he doesn't think that, right? That man looks at you like you hung the moon." "I know. I know he doesn't think it. But I think it. And I don't know how to stop." Rose was quiet for a moment, studying him. Then: "Okay. Describe an outfit that's made you feel sexy." Shane opened his mouth. Closed it. Tried again. Nothing came. He thought about his closet—the rows of identical dark suits, the game day shirts still in their dry-cleaning bags, the workout clothes and the team-branded everything and the careful, curated wardrobe of a man who'd spent his entire adult life trying to disappear into acceptability. "I can't," he finally said. "I can't think of anything." "Nothing? Ever?" Shane shook his head slowly. "I've spent so much time curating this... this clean cut, golden boy image. The one that's safe. The one that doesn't attract attention or make anyone uncomfortable. And it's not me—it was never me—but I don't..." He trailed off, frustrated. "I'm not really sure how to be the me I want to be now. I don't even know what that looks like."

Ilya glances at Shane, at the way the dying light is catching in his hair, refracting. At that spiderlily mouth, slightly open and curling coyly, two teeth peeked through the dark gap like an American Girl doll. At that shoulder, bare and pale and close enough to touch if Ilya just leaned forward, if he just reached out and took another liberty. To touch another person is to say: I know you will die, and I am doing this anyway. His mother used to say something like this. About painting. Every portrait is an act of faith, Ilyushenka. Faith and futility both. ⋆ contrary to personal preference, ilya gets a roommate.

“Shane,” Hayden says, voice tight. At once, the hairs on Shane’s arms stand to attention. Ilya tracked the movement with his eyes, his tongue darting out to wet his lower lip. Shane shuddered. He had no idea what to call this, this… electricity. He had never felt anything like it before. Deep down he was pretty sure he knew what an outsider would call this but that couldn’t be. He had dated women. Several women. The relationships had been… mostly fine? The women had been lovely. They had been good friends. They had kissed - politely and in front of people a lot of the time - it had been a usual, typical relationship. He was just a gentleman… right? As the air sucked out all his breath, as he plunged deep underwater and felt his ears beginning to pop, Shane could see Ilya moving closer to him. Gently, Ilya placed a hand on Shane’s knee, rubbing his fingertips in careful circles. Shane was sure he should have died from lack of air by now. ** Or: Ilya Rozanov only wants two things: to be a principal ballet dancer and for Shane Hollander to be his boyfriend. Unfortunately Shane doesn't know what he wants.

Shane comes down the hall, hands shoved in his pockets, making eyes at Ilya that beg "please behave" and behind him is Rose Fucking Landry. The actress. The woman Ilya had seen in the club, her hand up Shane's shirt. The woman Shane had fucked. Twice. They are doing nothing when the doorbell chimes. Well, not nothing; they are, as Shane would say, relaxing. On the couch in front of a movie neither of them is really watching, feet up, Shane leaning back against him, his hand in Shane's hair. They have fucked, showered, eaten and Ilya is scrolling his phone thinking idly about tempting Shane into something that would require another shower when it happens. Shane sits up, looks at him. "They are your parents," Ilya says. Since the conversation with Shane's parents three days earlier, David and Yuna Hollander have been very careful, very polite, about texting or calling before showing up to the cottage, but. The doorbell chimes again. Shane pushes up off the couch. "I'm sure they just forgot something," he says, an apology. "Be right back." He is not right back. Over the low volume the television, Ilya cannot make out the words but he hears Shane's tone of surprise and then a high feminine voice that is definitely not Yuna Hollander's. Ilya hits the MUTE button, trying to listen, but still the words are indecipherable, although Shane's voice is getting closer, along with the click clack of high heels on the tile. Ilya stands up. Shane comes down the hall, hands shoved in his pockets, making eyes at Ilya that beg "please behave" and behind him is Rose Fucking Landry. The actress. The woman Ilya had seen in the club, her hand up Shane's shirt. The woman Shane had fucked. Twice. She is thinner and taller than Ilya remembered, and her mouth drops open when she recognizes him. "This is, um, Rose," Shane says, gesturing to Rose Landry like a host on a game show. "Rose, this is Ilya, my, um . . ." "Boyfriend," Ilya supplies. "Yeah, um," Shane says. "Ilya Rozanov?" Rose shouts happily, punching Shane in the arm. "You're dating Ilya Rozanov?" "Yes," Ilya says. "This is what 'boyfriend' means." "Can I hug you?" Rosa asks, coming down the stairs into the living room. "I have to hug you! I am such a fan. Your mid-air tip-in against Philadelphia was just the most amazing shot I've ever seen!" "Okay," Ilya says, because that was, in fact, an excellent goal, and Rose bounces into his arms, gives him a quick professional hug. She smells like citrus perfume. Over her shoulder, Shane mouths sorry. Ilya glares at him. *** While Rose freshens up and calls her people to let them know she's arrived, Shane drags him into the bedroom. "I'm sorry," he says before Ilya can even speak. "We made plans before you said you would come and I forgot to call her and—" "She cannot stay here." Ilya shakes his head, pacing back and forth in front of the windows. He can still smell her perfume. "She should go, now. Back to Ottawa." "It's almost ten," Shane says. "It's a two-hour drive." "So? Her car has lights, yes? What is the problem?" Ilya flings his hands up. Shane steps in front of him, stopping him. "Ilya. C'mon." "She is your ex-girlfriend," Ilya complains. "I. Am. Gay," Shane says and then glances over his shoulder like he's afraid someone's listening. That, that right there, is why Ilya does not want Rose to stay. This was supposed to be their time, their private time, and now here is someone else who has fucked Shane and he is supposed to be nice and let her stay? "You have female friends," Shane is saying. "Why can't I have female friends?" "My friends are not here, Shane!" Ilya protests. "I didn't tell you I wanted to marry her, Ilya," Shane snaps back, and okay. That is fair. Ilya sighs. "Tomorrow." Shane grimaces. "Actually, her flight's on Sunday afternoon, so . . ." "Two days?" "A day and half," Shane says, rubbing his hands up and down Ilya's arms. "Please. She's a good friend. Please." Ilya scowls, but they both know the decision has already been made. Rose Fucking Landry will be staying until Sunday afternoon. *** "Be nice," Shane hisses back at him when they come out of the bedroom.

“Hm. Interesting,” the nurse stated as Ilya shifted in the bed. “You had a spinal cord injury four years ago, correct?” Ah, shit. “Yep,” Ilya shifted again, looking directly at the nurse. His eyes flickered but he didn’t look away from Ilya. “And, according to the paramedics, you fell directly on your back. Your head hit first, according to what the bartender who called emergency services said. So, I’ll ask again. Are you feeling better, Mr. Rozanov?” After an injury that took hockey away from Ilya, life doesn't seem to have anything much to give him. Little does he know, his attempt to get out of life ends up being the reason he stays in it.

Shane's breath catches on a sob, and he muffles the sound with his hand. Everything feels like too much. He’s naked, and he can feel entirely too much on his body, inside his body, and he hates how it's starting to feel gross. His head is pounding, and he can't even focus on placating his mind when his lungs are also screaming in his throat for breath. Ilya hears, and his hands reach out to hold Shane, tension lying in every part of his body. “Shane—” “Don't touch me,” Shane snaps, more desperation than yelling as he rips his arm out of Ilyas's grasp. His tears have nowhere to go now, and they finally spill over, hot and humiliating, down his cheeks. Ilya freezes in place, hand hovering mid-air. A myriad of emotions flicker across his face: confusion, hurt, fear. Ilya takes an unconscious step back like someone shoved him. His body curls in on itself, trying to make himself appear smaller. He looks... terrified. Like, Shane just called him a monster, and he believes it. OR: inspired by the fight in the long game when ilya had told shane he could have sex with other men because he did not believe in cheating.
