Shane catches a cold and Ilya makes him a tea. The hotel’s carpet, patterned in a taste Ilya found offensive, carried him toward the end of the hall. With each quiet step, the knot in his chest cinched tighter. Excitement tangled with trepidation, the need to touch Shane pressing harder than the fear that this time, the door would remain closed. Perhaps Hollander had already written off their handful of hurried meetings as a fluke. A mistake. But this was Boston. His hometown. And Ilya had already been lucky once tonight. A five–three win, an additional two goals on his record-breaking season. Midnight had only just passed; maybe the day still owed him one more kindness. When he reached the room number Hollander had reluctantly given him in passing, murmuring in the hallway behind the rink before the game, Ilya paused. He glanced over his shoulder, down the empty corridor, confirming no one would witness him slipping into his competition’s room. Then, with a staccato drum beating beneath his battered ribs, he raised his hand and rapped his knuckles against the door. Time slowed to a near halt as he waited, restlessly tapping his foot against the floor for any shuffle behind the door. Nothing came. He knocked again, harder. Most of the Metros were likely out drowning Boston’s nightlife, but Ilya was certain Hollander wasn’t among them. There was a long list of things he still didn’t know about him, but one truth had surfaced early: number twenty-four wasn’t a fan of parties, or drinking, or dancing. Boring, Ilya had declared at the time, unwilling to admit he’d found the abstinence quietly endearing. It was rare, after all, for a man in his early twenties, at the prime of his life, blessed with a generous salary and a face most people recognized, to spend his nights watching juvenile YouTube videos and sipping Ginger Ale alone in a hotel room. He lifted his hand to knock a third time. The soft vibration in his jeans pocket stopped him. Can’t happen tonight. Sorry. Disappointment bloomed bitter on his tongue. He swallowed it down, refusing to give it room to linger. So that was it. Their fling, short-lived, messy, clumsy, infuriatingly fun, was over Even as Ilya tried to accept the truth of it, his hand betrayed him, knocking anyway. At the faint rustle of bedsheets behind the door, he tugged out his phone and typed a quick reply. I know you’re there. Open up, Hollander. Somewhere inside the room, he heard a humorless sound bleed through the silence. Half a laugh, half a breath. Then, a cough. It sounded hollow, dry. Another text. Go away, Rosanov. Ilya’s determination was fierce, an unstoppable force. It was what had carried him this far, onto Boston’s starting line, into the life he’d dreamed of as an eight-year-old with a pair of used skates and only the roughest grasp of English. That same tenacity refused to let him walk away now. He sighed, dragging a hand through his brown curls as he weighed his next move. Someone’s going to see me. It wasn’t dignified, dangling the threat of exposure over Hollander’s head. Rumors would spread fast if he were found loitering outside a competitor’s hotel room in the dead of night, and they’d damn Ilya just as thoroughly as they would Hollander. Still, when it worked, satisfaction curled warm in his chest. The deadbolt slid free, and the sound sparked low in his stomach. “Get in,” Hollander rasped. “Now, you idiot.” “So excited to see me,” Ilya teased, slipping through the narrow opening and pulling the door shut behind him. The television was the room’s only light, its flicker casting long shadows over the rumpled sheets and a small pile of Kleenex on the nightstand. Ilya’s gaze snagged there, drifted to a bottle of NyQuil, then lifted back to Hollander. Red nose. Swollen eyes. Instinctively, he stepped back. “You’re sick.” “You think I was playing like shit for fun?” Hollander snapped, though the bite didn’t land. Whatever fire he’d burned on the ice was gone now. The man in front of him was spent, shirtless and damp with sweat, trousers hanging low and wrinkled on his hips, exhaustion etched into every line. Still, Ilya’s attention lingered. He couldn’t help noticing the shape of his bare arms, remembering the way those fingers had slid up his chest, over his cheek, through his hair. “Not worse than usual,” Ilya shrugged, resisting a smile when Hollander rolled his eyes. “Fuck off,” Hollander muttered. Their usual banter fell flat when every word cost him something, when his limbs dragged as he turned back toward the bed and nearly collapsed onto the edge of the mattress. “You want to get sick too? You’ve got a game tomorrow.” “I am Russian,” Ilya said simply. “Russians do not get sick.”

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov both need one thing to live their dreams of playing for the NHL: a mating bite. Shane's an omega, and the League doesn't allow unmated omegas to play hockey. Ilya's a Russian alpha, who needs a mate to get a U.S. visa. Their slightly harebrained solution? Bite each other, and let the unfinished bond fade. After five years of stupid texts, awkward heat-care packages, and dancing around their feelings, the bond still hasn't faded and ignoring it has become impossible—something's got to give. -- Contains spoilers for those who have only watched the show, and for The Long Game. A/B/O AU that very loosely follows canon. Happy ending!

Shane Hollander is everything the NHL wants him to be: a Golden Boy, a captain, a rivalry- ready face of the league. Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane isn’t allowed to want: sharp-tongued, unapologetic, and devastatingly magnetic. From a charged first collision to a decade of stolen nights, staged girlfriends, and a rivalry that burns hotter than hate ever could, Shane and Ilya build a love that survives only in hallways, hotel rooms, and the spaces where cameras can’t reach. But some ghosts don’t fade quietly—and some loves refuse to stay secret forever. A story about ambition, fear, glass walls, and choosing each other even when the world says it’s a disaster.

loyalty is a knife by kryptic_girl
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-23
It's been a hell of a year for the Centaurs. Shane and Ilya are playing their first playoffs together as teammates. An old teammate makes Shane doubt his loyalty. Ilya reminds him just how loyal he is. Or; the one where they win it all. Watching Ilya Rozanov work out was damn near obscene. His smooth, glistening body, covered in beads of sweat as he shoulder-pressed a 150lb barbell above his head was a sight to see. Shane was sure that, with enough incentive, Ilya could press him. That would be a PR he'd happily be part of. "What a sight, right?" Harris said, interrupting Shane's thoughts. Shane startled. Had Harris been standing there long? Shane coughed, making a sorry attempt at collecting himself. "Um, yeah, I..." "Enough said," Harris winked. Shane flushed at being caught, a burning heat rising below his eyes. Not the first time he had been caught with a wandering eye in the Ottawa Centaurs gym. Or locker room. Or really anywhere in the practice facility. Shane had been on the Centaurs since July, when his contract with the voyageurs ended and he became a free agent. Since then, Shane and Ilya had been an unstoppable force. Even though they rarely played on the ice at the same time, save for a few power plays, their chemistry was undeniable. They dominated the league in points, and Shane's position on the second-line made it so their power in the center ran deep. "No, I just lost my focus for a sec," Shane tried, but even as he said it, he heard the quips before they came out. He rolled the dumbbell over in his palm, trying to ground himself and not get lost in a hole of embarrassment. "You seem to be losing your focus a lot lately, huh? I thought we hired you for your keen mental discernment," Troy Barrett said. Jesus, was everyone watching him drool over his husband? Shane made a noise between a grunt and a whimper, trying to end the conversation there. Unfortunately, his husband had the worst timing in the world. Ilya dropped his barbell onto its support and lifted his upper body to come to a seated position. His grey T-shirt clung to the contours of his body, a dark ring of sweat pooling along his neckline. His curls stuck to his forehead, not unlike when he and Shane were... intimate. Shane shuddered at the thought. Ilya noticed the three of them aggregated in the corner by the dumbbells, looking straight at him, and lifted his hand to his ear to pull out one of his earphones. "Are you talking about me?" Ilya said coyly, playing with the cord of his earphones. His charm is infuriating. Troy let out a laugh. "Your husband is obsessed with you." Ilya's grin cracked his face in half. "Can you blame him?" "Ugh, you guys are horrible," Shane groaned. The truth was, Shane was obsessed with him. He didn't realize how good it would feel to share everything with each other. A bed, a gym, a team. It all felt so right. And it still felt so new, despite the past few months of working together. So forgive him if he wanted to savour every moment he spent with his husband, especially after years of hiding. "All right everyone, listen up," Coach Wiebe said as he entered the gym. Ilya winked at Shane. Shane cleared his throat and turned to face his Coach. "This is it. Our second year in a row in the playoffs starts tomorrow. This is our chance to show everyone that it was not a fluke. We've got a great chance of really winning this thing this year, especially with our new additions." Shane felt a slap on his back as Troy whooped. Somehow, Shane felt himself turn an even deeper shade of red. He had been welcomed with open arms by the Cens, but it sometimes shook him just how much he was a part of this team. After playing for the Voyageurs for the better part of a decade, it still felt weird to have a different logo on his jersey. Shane recalled that his first goal as a Centaur – Ilya wouldn’t let him forget it, he’d kept the puck – had caused quite the roar in the arena where they played. They called him a hometown hero now. "Now, I know you all want to decorate this place with banners as much as I do, so let's get to work." *** Coach Wiebe was right. They really did have a chance at winning this whole thing. In the first round against Buffalo, every pass connected, their defence was on fire, and Hayes was an iron wall. They swept them, 4-0. Their second round against the Admirals was mildly tougher. Scott Hunter might have been older, but he was still as fast as an arrow when he needed to be. To make matters worse, Luca Haas had been rocked into the glass in their third game and was put on a mandatory three game rest. The Cens readjusted, and Ilya took on Luca's position on the wing. Shane came up to center on the first line. Their chemistry on the ice was unbeatable. It was like they were in each other's brains. He wasn’t sure he would ever enjoy playing hockey after being abandoned by the Voyageurs. Playing with this team – playing with Ilya – it made hockey fun again. They won that series by game 6, 4-2. In their last series in the eastern conference, they were matched up against Montreal. Because of course they were. Whatever angry, homophobic gods were responsible for this were probably laughing down at Shane as he took to center ice to kick off game seven. "Hollander," came a squeaky voice from across the center circle. The arena comes to life as Aaron Goulding, a fresh-faced 19 year old rookie, lines up against Shane for the puck drop. Aaron was supposed to be the new Shane Hollander. Shane had to admit, he was fast -- but his inexperience was obvious. Shane smirked at Goulding's attempt at being tough. "Aaron," Shane replied coolly. The only place Shane ever felt cool was on the ice. "It's an honour," Goulding said. Shane smiled into the floor.
