  1. Hockey's Prince Charming is kind of an asshole and Jake Merrell is trying not to let it get to him. He can't pretend Shane Hollander is the worst captain in the league, and he's looking forward to seeing the Bears (his former team). Even if it is for a match against them.

  3. Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.

But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.

He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?

He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

  5. Ilya knows what he is. He has always known what he is. The word for it in Russian tastes like something you'd scrape off a boot. The word in English is bisexual, which is a nicer word, which he has heard, which he does not use. He uses other words. He uses the word his brother taught him. He uses it on himself before anyone else can. He grows up. He gets good at hockey. He moves to America. He... falls in love. 8. "Whatever. Just don't let yourself get distracted just to get your dick wet, Hollander." Cormeau sneered. Roz interrupted him. "It has been seven years and it has not distracted us yet. I do not know if you remember this, or maybe your brain is all fucked up from all the hits you take, but me and Hollander are captains and we have both gotten our teams to Cups. So mind your fucking business." Cliff sucked in a breath. Surely that wasn't true. It couldn't be true. 7 years. That would mean it had been going on this entire time. The entire of Roz's career. The entire of Hollander's career. 7 years. What the fuck. (flipping my fic love and other drugs on it's head. ilya gets hurt and is high when shane goes to visit)

He briefly squeezes his empty ring finger. He feels, all at once, like he might cry. Instead, he swallows, and breathes, and pastes a smile on his face, and marches his ass down to Scott and Kip’s fucking wedding of the century.

“You're Shane Hollander. His boyfriend. You’re the reason he bailed on his team. Became a fucking pansy who-” Shane’s fist, which he hadn’t even realised he’d pulled back in preparation to strike, is captured in a firm grasp and gently lowered. He smells the familiar scent of Ilya’s cologne and then feels Ilya’s chin rest against his shoulder. -- Most people think that of the two of them, Ilya is the violent one. They would be wrong. 11. Tensions are high between the Montreal Metros and the Ottawa Centaurs during Shane's first season in Ottawa. After bringing a devastating loss against the Metros, the teams encounter each other in a bar in downtown Ottawa. The Metros are looking for a fight, and Shane is fucking tired of being good. "That was an exciting win against New York tonight." "Thank you," Drapeau, the starting goalie for the Montreal Metros said, sweat dripping off the stringy strands of dark hair that fell over his forehead. "We did exactly what we had to do, played some good hockey." "You got a shut out, congratulations." Drapeau laughed, his eyes very obviously sliding down the female reporter's body. He smirked. "Thank you, it wasn't hard." "So confident, that's what we like to hear," she said. "The Admirals did try hard, do you have any idea how many goals of Scott Hunter's you stopped tonight." Drapeau raised his eyebrows and all but rolled his eyes, he glanced up and around before answering. "I don't count, not a lot of his, I don't think, he didn't get many opportunities." She laughed, "You are all very confident in this season, even though it is so early. Does that confidence come from new leadership on the Metros line?" "Our captain? Yeah, Olsson is great. He really earned it, unlike...well." The reporter jumped on the opportunity to mention him, now that the door was cracked open slightly. "Your former captain is now playing for the Ottawa Centaurs. How do you feel about the Metros' chances against them this season?" Drapeau laughed, he sounded tired. His smile fell, then reformed, gleefully twisted. "I'm not worried. Hollander was slowing us down. Now we know why. The Centaurs have never been a winning team, everyone knows that. I think they will be too...distracted," he laughed at the word 'distracted', ensuring everyone knows exactly what he means, "to play well. At least for as long as Hollander and Rozanov are on the line." The reporter looked momentarily flabbergasted at how explicit Drapeau was being in his contempt. She stuttered, and he took the opportunity to thank her and duck out of there. Shane was riding an exercise bike to death. Not to his death, to its death. He stared at his legs in the mirror, a blur of movement and muscle. He was overdoing it on the bike, Luca Haas panting and sweating through his shirt on the bike beside him, trying to keep up, when Shane decided he wasn't going to play fair anymore. Everyone else in the league played dirty. Everyone was happy slinging mud. His former team was working to slander his name at every opportunity. Shane's been trying to rise above. On the internet, some people believed what the Metros said; hat he was weak and holding them back. They pulled up his stats for hitting and taking hits on the ice and called him a scared pansy. Pansy was the nicest slur people used. Shane went harder on the bike, until he couldn't watch himself in the mirror anymore, he had to squeeze his eyes shut and push. Some actually do believe he and Ilya cheated throughout their time in the league. The major news outlets weren't reporting that way, at least, not anymore. Not after a beautiful cease and desist from Farah's team. But they thought it, they all thought it. Shane did not say a single thing against his former team or his former teammates. He was polite when reporters asked searching, or abrasive, questions. He just sighed and locked his phone when he saw photographs of he and Ilya holding hands on the internet, taken by some random person they hadn't noticed. He was taking all the attention in goddamn stride. Until his breaking point. Drapeau's interview at the Metros second game of the season irked Shane. Irked was a nice way of saying, it drove Shane up the fucking wall. It did Ilya too, Ilya got angry, Shane did too. The difference was, Shane's anger was internal. Ilya swore and threw a water bottle. "Distracted? We see how distracted he is as goalie with an eye swollen shut." Shane loved his husband, and he wished he shared his ability to verbalize his emotions. Shane let Ilya kiss him senseless, putting it out of his mind for the time being, but that interview was the match struck. The tweet from Comeau was holding the match to the fuse. It was only about three days after the Drapeau interview. It went out in the middle of the night. Shane didn't see it until 7:30 that morning. He was in from his morning run, making a smoothie. Ilya was still in bed. They had a long night, but Shane could never sleep in. It was a curse, one he wished his husband shared. @GGComeau20: hollander wsa a fuckin fag + were all glad he went back to wehere he came from The rampant spelling errors likely meant that Comeau was drunk, which made sense for him. He was a notorious partier, his reputation was even more prolific than Ilya's. As his captain, he had been worried about him, but Comeau was never receptive to being handled, so there wasn't much Shane could do about it. Shane felt a familiar burn of anger and regret grow in him. It rose in him like heartburn, and lingered the same. He tried to breathe, and managed it. Comeau could call him a fag all he wanted, Shane heard it all the time. He's heard it all his life. Now, it's directed at him rather than around him, and

  12. "It is our first game of the season against them. But it is their first against us too. They may have won cups, may have been higher in the ranking. But they are not the same. They are weak. 13. After practice, in the locker room, JJ had checked his phone with a strange look on his face. He stared at it so intensely, like he was trying to look at something very small. And then his eyes widened, and he shouted what the fuck so loud that everybody turned to look.

“Dude, what the fuck yourself,” Hayden laughed, and swiped JJ’s phone off the floor before anyone else could get it first. And he saw—well. At first, he wasn’t sure what he was looking at. And then he saw Ilya fucking Rozanov pissing all over his best friend’s chest, and, well. What the fuck was he supposed to do with that?

  17. There was a twitter post. A video. The caption said #pissgate. The video started playing automatically, and Ilya saw the nondescript white tile of the Metros locker room, and then the camera peered around a corner, and there he was. There Shane was. It played just long enough for Ilya to hear himself—say it—and Shane—piss on me. please—before his phone fell from his nerveless fingers and shattered on the concrete.

  19. He walked back to the living room, where Jackie and Hayden were standing, having a whispered conversation, Shane’s jacket folded over Jackie’s arm. They stopped talking and turned to Shane as he entered. “Hey, bud,” said Hayden slowly, not moving. “Uh, do you want me to leave?” asked Shane, gesturing to his jacket, panic rising in his throat. “What? No. No. Absolutely not. We were afraid you’d try and sneak out of here, so I grabbed your coat and keys,” explained Jackie. “Oh,” said Shane, letting out a shaky laugh as he ran his hand through his hair. “Good call. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind.” or Ilya has a new philosophy in how he picks fights, Shane doesn’t understand the appeal of a moral victory, and Hayden is so fucking glad he married Jackie.
