Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-11
After practice, in the locker room, JJ had checked his phone with a strange look on his face. He stared at it so intensely, like he was trying to look at something very small. And then his eyes widened, and he shouted what the fuck so loud that everybody turned to look.
“Dude, what the fuck yourself,” Hayden laughed, and swiped JJ’s phone off the floor before anyone else could get it first. And he saw—well. At first, he wasn’t sure what he was looking at. And then he saw Ilya fucking Rozanov pissing all over his best friend’s chest, and, well. What the fuck was he supposed to do with that?

Shane wasn’t stupid. He figured this was some kind of fucking cowardly tactic to keep him from being at the Games. Hopefully, that’s all they wanted. If he just played nice maybe this would all be over soon. No one was coming to save him. No one, except maybe Rozanov. And he was pretty sure Rozanov would just be pissed off at being stood up. Or: Shane goes missing before Sochi, and the only one who can save him is Ilya.

before those hands pulled me from the earth by byulelle
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)

It was a start, Shane knew that. And no matter what happened, he’d help Ilya. Always, as promised forever. They were going to win a hundred more Stanleys, retire, have children, and grow old together. The soil was damp, cold, and suffocating as the other digs into the earth with bare hands, with a single-minded intensity to free each ragged and stifled breath from the clutches of the loam. And with a new dawning of the sun, Ilya would find himself feeling its rays. Tonight wasn’t a good night, but tomorrow was a new day. ; 5 tells and signs Ilya is going through a depressive episode, and the ways Shane tries to help him through it.

The league sends out a notice at the end of the 2018 All Stars game in Tampa that there's a measles outbreak. Shane isn't too concerned since he knows that he's up to date on all his childhood vaccines, and, he assumes, everyone else in the MHL is as well. So he thinks nothing of it when Ilya calls him a few hours after landing in Boston to say he thinks he's coming down with a cold.

They were only supposed to be hooking up. That’s what it was supposed to be. They were never supposed to become anything real. Falling in love with Shane Hollander had never been part of the plan. So he ends it. Months later, during a heated game, one explosive check from Ilya sends Shane crashing to the ice and fighting for his life. As Shane lies on the edge of survival, Ilya is swallowed by guilt, terror, and the crushing realization that he walked away from the one person he can’t imagine losing, and that he might be too late to make it right.

Basically: Ilya gets concussed and the hospital calls Shane (who didn’t know that Ilya had put him down as his emergency contact) and who immediately races to Boston. (This is set during the hockey season after the last episode. They have come out to Shane’s parents and are ‘officially’ boyfriends, but Shane still plays for the Metros and Ilya still plays for Boston.)

“You can’t die first.” “What?!” “You can’t,” Ilya rasps, “I can’t.” “Ilya..” “I buried my mom,” he coughs a little, body rattles—it hurts, “..then, my dad. I don’t have any, if I need to see you—too.” Or, Ilya's sick, and his fever talking just breaking Shane's heart. ** Updated with part 2 <3

Admitting how they really feel after Shane's panicked debacle with Rose, Shane and Ilya figure out what being in love without hiding it is like, especially when your boyfriend gets creamed on the ice. “Concussion and a fractured collarbone but…” “Could have been worse.” “Could have been worse!” Shane agrees cheerfully, his brows knotting as he notices Ilya’s discomfort, reaching out his good hand. “Hey, heeey! C’mere!” Ilya sighs, taking Shane’s hand. “Yesss, bet-ter… I’m sorry I didn’t text you last night,” Shane pouts, and Ilya cuts him off, shaking his head and stroking his thumb across some of Shane’s freckles. “No, no, it’s okay, don’t worry about that. How are you feeling?” Shane shuts his eyes. “Loopy. Pretty bored and headachey. Not awful.” His glazed eyes open again and he looks up at Ilya. “How about you?” “Didn’t sleep at all. Worried like hell about you.” “I know, I’m sorry… and I was planning on asking you something last night! I’m mostly pissed that got fucked up.” He pulls Ilya’s hand to his mouth for a kiss. “Will you… come to my cottage this summer?

“Jackie?” Shane’s question cuts through the silence, and Jackie winces at the frantic rasp of his voice. “Right here, honey.” She tries to keep her voice light, wrapping her hand around Hayden’s wrist and meeting his worried gaze over the phone. “What’s going on?” “I need your help.” Shane croaks out. “They called, but they won’t - I need to know if he’s okay, but they won’t tell me.” The end of his sentence disappears in something so close to a sob it makes something in Jackie’s chest freeze over.

Ilya glances at Shane, at the way the dying light is catching in his hair, refracting. At that spiderlily mouth, slightly open and curling coyly, two teeth peeked through the dark gap like an American Girl doll. At that shoulder, bare and pale and close enough to touch if Ilya just leaned forward, if he just reached out and took another liberty. To touch another person is to say: I know you will die, and I am doing this anyway. His mother used to say something like this. About painting. Every portrait is an act of faith, Ilyushenka. Faith and futility both. ⋆ contrary to personal preference, ilya gets a roommate.

He thinks of Ilya’s commanding tone: “Hollander, here”, “take it for me”, or Shane’s personal favorite, “kneel.” Shane, through all these years, has been amazed that to Ilya these little commands are so casual, just a part of fucking for him. To Shane, these words are all consuming. They shut off the hyperactive part of his brain and he can just… enjoy. Ilya takes over, makes Shane feel good, uses Shane to feel good, and Shane goes gooey for it every time. He’s never known peace like getting railed by Ilya Rozanov. Shane knows you can't eat your cake and have it, too. He knows that asking too much of Ilya would be plain selfish. Knows that asking to be told exactly what to do so he can shut his brain off isn't normal. And Ilya... well he doesn't think Shane knows shit.
