  1. “You've heard all my sex stories over the years. The good, the bad, the ugly. And yet I haven't gotten a single story out of you." Shane spluttered, cheeks flushing crimson. "Because it's none of your business? What the fuck?" "Aw, so you don't kiss and tell?" Hayden teased, laughing when Shane's blush deepened. He shoved at his shoulder, trying to wipe the smile from his face. "Relax, dude. I'm only messing with you. You don't have to tell me anything. But, like, we can talk about this shit. Sex, you know. I don't care that it's between two guys. Honestly, it's kind of interesting-" "Jesus Christ," Shane muttered. "This is not how I thought this was going to go.”

Is cold.” Shane gives Hayden the go-ahead to grab a package from his house—but Ilya flew in a day early as a surprise. Oops. An alternate Hayden-finds-out story set the winter after The Cottage.

  5. Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.

In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.

But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

  6. It’s the fall of 2018. Shane has come out to his team, and the night before a game in Boston Hayden comes to Shane’s hotel room for a movie night. But he’s been thinking, and the math is mathing a bit too well. “No, my theory here is… your Lily, who you are still totally dating, is Ilya Rozanov.” Mainly Hayden’s POV, but some of Shane’s at the end. This is part of the same series as my two other short Hayden POVs (about Shane coming back in Ilya’s clothes, as well as the blowjob phone call), and refers back to them a little. But this can absolutely be read on its own too.

  7. He walked back to the living room, where Jackie and Hayden were standing, having a whispered conversation, Shane’s jacket folded over Jackie’s arm. They stopped talking and turned to Shane as he entered. “Hey, bud,” said Hayden slowly, not moving. “Uh, do you want me to leave?” asked Shane, gesturing to his jacket, panic rising in his throat. “What? No. No. Absolutely not. We were afraid you’d try and sneak out of here, so I grabbed your coat and keys,” explained Jackie. “Oh,” said Shane, letting out a shaky laugh as he ran his hand through his hair. “Good call. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind.” or Ilya has a new philosophy in how he picks fights, Shane doesn’t understand the appeal of a moral victory, and Hayden is so fucking glad he married Jackie.

  9. So, Shane was maybe-sort-of dating a Boston Raiders fan? Was that why all the secrecy? If Shane was anyone else, Hayden would think it was overkill, but the guy had gone into tailspins over things that would get him less ribbing in the locker room. Still seemed extreme that he wouldn't even admit she existed, but what did Hayden know? It made as much sense as any other theory he'd ever come up with. In which Hayden reaches out to Boston Lily about Shane's condition after he goes down on the ice. Despite his curiosity, he's determined not to pry... But things come out all the same.

  14. They talked about it, long and often and then - it’s decided and Shane feels oddly at peace. He feels peaceful as he laces up his skates and he feels peaceful standing across Ilya on the ice, his smile softer than usual. “You still want to do it after the game?” “Yes” He wins the face off. They talked about it, long and often and then - it’s decided and Shane feels oddly at peace. He feels peaceful as he laces up his skates and he feels peaceful standing across Ilya on the ice, his smile softer than usual. “You still want to do it after the game?” “Yes” He wins the face off. The press conference after is the moment. They made Shane and Ilya sit next to each other, and although he had expected it, he’s still relieved. “Hollander - this was your 100th game playing against your rival, Rozanov - how are you feeling about this?” a reporter asks, and Shane smiles. “Did I ever tell you guys about the first time I met Ilya?” he asks, purposefully using his first name, “I was 17. We were standing outside a gym and I went up to introduce myself.” “You told me I couldn’t smoke there” Ilya interjects, and the crowd of reporters laughs. “I remember being impressed by him” Shane smiles, “And looking forward to the next meeting.” “What do you remember about that first meeting, Rozanov?” another reporter asks. “His freckles” he says truthfully, and Shane blushes - the crowd falls silent, a few confusing whispers going through the room. “A few weeks ago, Ilya’s plane had to make an emergency landing” Shane says, “And ever since I’ve thought about that first meeting a lot - and all the times we’ve met after.” “Did Hollander reach out after the emergency landing?” a woman in the front row asks, and Ilya places his hand on Shane’s thigh, not that they can see. “Of course he did” Ilya sighs, “I gave him quite a scare.” “The second time I met Ilya” Shane says, “Now that’s a better story.” “What happened the second time you met?” a reporter shouts from the back, it’s clear that this press conference is not going how anyone expected - they probably should’ve prepared better. “I asked what his hotel room number was” Ilya says, and Shane can’t help but laugh. “So you’ve been friends since the beginning?” someone asks, and Shane laughs even harder. He doesn’t answer the questions. “So since that moment - all those years ago - after every game we would meet up” Shane says, “To be together - and then I got scared for a moment” “That’s when he dated Rose Landry” Ilya explains, enjoying the confused looks of the reporters and then spotting Shane’s parents in the back of the room. He smiles, waving at them - half the room turns around to watch Shane Hollander’s parents wave back at Ilya Rozanov. “Luckily he got his head out of his ass” Ilya says, Shane gives him a smile. “You’re such an asshole” he shakes his head, there’s a fondness in his words. “I did not” Ilya says, “But then something amazing happened. Scott Hunter kissed his boyfriend on live TV and suddenly it all didn’t seem so scary anymore.” “Are you trying to tell us you’re gay?” Someone on the left asks. “I am bisexual” Ilya says, he doesn’t speak for Shane - Shane has been out for a while, and he’s never denied any of the rumors. Usually going for a My personal life is not the topic of conversation. Ilya looks at Shane, and he nods - encouraging him to say the one thing they did agree on. “A few months ago, I got home” Ilya says, “After winning a bunch of games, and my entire living room was covered in electric candlelights - and then the love of my life sat down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” “And he said yes” Shane smiles. “I guess the point here is” Ilya says, “Is that Hollander and Rozanov might be rivals on the ice, but off the ice they’ve been so much more.” “And this summer” Shane takes a deep breath, “I will marry Ilya Rozanov and we will return after the summer and continue playing the best hockey we can.” “I know people will probably have a lot to say about it, and have a lot of opinions” Ilya says, “But honestly they can fuck off. They don’t know shit and we don’t really need their opinion on us. Our personal life has never affected our game - we just decided that we no longer want to hide it.” “Are you telling us that you two - ice hockey rivals - are actually lovers” “I hate that word” Shane says, and Ilya laughs, “But yes, I guess we are.” “Our agent will be available for questions or interview requests, but we will probably decline most” Ilya says, “We both have two weeks off and we are planning to just spend it together, because after another year of videocalls and finding time to spent together when our schedules line up, well - I missed my fiance”

  17. "And so, like, Roz is never at these things?" Barrett had asked. "Well, he's come once or twice." Bood had answered, a thoughtful face on. "We always invite him, though I know at this point he's going to be busy." "But what's he doing?" Barrett asked, his face crunched up. "It's an Ottawa Centaurs mystery." Harris was sitting next to Barrett and was grinning at him as he elaborated. "Just like how NHL star Ilya Rozanov gets traded, willingly and by his own choice, to Ottawa and yet, no one knows why he chose the team." Or The Ottawa Centaurs have their own theories about what their captain gets up to in his free time. Wyatt Hayes organizes a bet about it. If only getting an answer out of Rozanov would be easy.

  18. “Rozy—shit,” he manages, voice strangled, want bubbling molten and inescapable in his gut, hips trembling with the force of not rudely bucking up into Rozanov’s warm, far too talented mouth. Now, he just has to convince Ilya of that same truth. An adjusted timeline. A collection of moments. A story about completing someone, despite the odds.

  20. When Ilya gets injured while swimming in the lake, Shane scrambles to save him from drowning. ("We all get our bell rung, eventually." -Shane Hollander) It was a less than perfect day at the lake. A gray day—little sun. But Shane Hollander was overflowing with light. He felt it on his cheeks, all over his skin, in his bones. He couldn’t stop smiling with it. The cottage itself seemed to glow with a living aura. The night before he was looking into his longtime lover’s eyes when he said—twice in Russian, and then once in English—“I love you.” Shane said it back. And his world shifted like tectonic plates. No day would ever truly be gray again. Ilya Rozanov stood on top of the large, slanted rock on which Shane sat. “Don’t dive into the water, you idiot. It’s shallow here—up to your waist.” Ilya ruffled Shane’s slate-black hair. “I do little jump,” Rozanov said. “Barely dive. Closer to —what do you say—eh, belly flop.” Shane rolled his eyes as he carefully rearranged his hair. “You’re going to belly flop into cold water with bruised ribs?” Ilya winced and wrinkled his nose at the thought. “You dive in there and you’re going to sprain your wrists on the bottom before your feet hit the water,” Hollander warned. “Fine!” Ilya made a show of putting his hands behind his back by stretching his long arms up and around. He clasped his own fingers together and stared down at Hollander. “No arms. Half belly flap, half dive. Yes? Approved?” The fondness for Ilya that glowed in Shane’s heart warmed. “Fine!” he said, pronouncing the word with a Russian accent, speaking it the same way Ilya had a moment ago. “But there’s a downed tree down there so aim to the—” Ilya rotated to the right and dove nose-first over Shane’s knees. “—left.” Shane gulped. Ilya disappeared into the water—all six feet of him—and Shane sighed. He looked around, taking a moment to ingest the view. The hockey captain took in the trees, the horizon on the water, the sky. All beautiful, he concluded. But not as beautiful as Ilya Rozanov’s body in those swimming trunks. That was his favorite view of all. Shane looked down at the spot in the water where Ilya had disappeared, and curled his hands into fists when he realized that a whole half minute had passed. How long could his lover hold his breath? Shane didn’t know. “Rozanov?” he called to the silent lake. “Ilya!” The clouds shifted then. Shane concluded that an entire minute had passed. Sunlight through the trees illuminated the colors of the water—blue, black, teal, green... And red. “FUCK,” Shane gasped at the sight of the blood. He eased himself into the water and started swimming as fast as he could. His leg bumped something solid. Shane took a deep breath and dropped underwater, eyes open. Arms paddling, fingers reaching, mostly blind, Shane felt around for the solid object. Fingers found the underwater tree, first, but then he found something hard that felt like skin, and he pulled. Shane summoned all of his strength and swam for the surface. He emerged gasping, holding the limp, unmoving body in a bridal carry. Rozanov’s head lolled against Shane’s bicep— eyes shut, mouth open. “Ilya!” Hollander shouted at him. “ILYA!” When not even an eyelid flinched, he swore again and stomped toward the shore. Shane had never heard his own heart beating. But it was thundering in his ears when he gently laid Ilya’s waterlogged body down on the grass. Rozanov’s skin was corpse-colored except for the massive gash at his hairline that was leaking blood. “Dammit!” Shane shouted, voice cracking, when water leaked from Rozanov’s blue-tinted lips. He rolled him onto his side and watched several cups of water stream from his mouth. Then Shane knelt, pressed his ear to Ilya’s lips, and both listened and felt for his breathing. Nothing. No inhale. No exhale. Tears erupted from Shane’s dark eyes. He pressed two fingers against the pulse point on Ilya’s throat. He found it. Ilya had a pulse. But Shane was certain his heart was beating too slow—the sensation shallow under the white skin. Shane’s eyes were so soaked with tears that everything went funhouse mirror blurry. He rolled Ilya onto his back, squeezed his nostrils shut, and blew air into his lungs. Again. Again and again and again. Over and over he breathed breath into his lover. In the distance, a loon called—mocking, almost. “Please,” Shane said against Ilya’s lips. “Wake up, you asshole! Please!” Shane pulled back and looked down at Ilya’s slack face. “Ilya,” he begged. “ILYA!” Then, with all his strength, Shane pushed down on Ilya’s stomach. Water, vomit, and who knew what else erupted from Ilya’s stomach and chest. A cough followed it—then another. After three more, Ilya’s eyes burst open and he went into a coughing fit that Shane had no doubt killed his already bruised ribs. Shane lifted Ilya’s body, then. Lifted him up into his arms so that he was almost sitting. Shane held him while he coughed—didn’t care about the blood slowly soaking his swimming trunks or the vomit under his knees. Ilya’s wide eyes found Shane’s and refused to look away. Shane whispered into Ilya’s ear, “I’m here, I’ve got you, just breathe, you’re ok—you’re ok—you’re ok.” The blood flow didn’t stop, but the coughing eventually did. “Shane,” Ilya wheezed. “S- Sorry…” “Shhh,” Hollander soothed. “You hit your head. You’re bleeding bad. I have to get you to the hospital—can you stand?”
