God, Shane looked good. He fiddled with the straw in his boring ginger ale as the objectively gorgeous redheaded woman beside him spoke animatedly. Ilya could tell he was feigning interest in both her and her topic of choice, despite her stilettos leaving him eye level with one very perky (plastic, perhaps?) set of tits. He huffed the tiniest of laughs to himself as he leant against the bar. That Shane believed he could keep up a facade of heterosexuality without even sparing a glance for that rack was outrageous. Everything about him, from his freckles to how his offensive game to how he moaned was beyond outrageous. A figure moved towards Shane, who looked up, into the other man's eyes, and beamed. A proper smile, a broad one, where white teeth sparkled and eyes shone. Fuck. ~ Ilya gets the wrong idea of an interaction at the gala. Cue jealousy, very publicly crossed wires, and one VERY happy Shane Hollander at the end of the night.

He was alone because Ilya had left because Ilya always had to leave. [...] He felt horrible. Ilya had left. Maybe Shane hadn’t been good enough? No, he would’ve left anyway. He always left.
But maybe he would’ve stayed a little longer if Shane had been better? Maybe if he’d been better, used more of those tricks he’d been trying to learn, he wouldn’t have left so soon. Maybe he would’ve wanted to stay like Shane wanted him to stay. Would’ve wanted to hold him like Shane wanted to ask him to do. Maybe Shane wouldn’t be trapped in this cavernous space between worlds, feeling like he was free-falling, searching for the path out of this emptiness.
OR
Shane experiences sub-drop for the first time. Ilya holds him through it.

There was no way. Absolutely no way. The universe was a cruel mistress and there was no way Shane was spending the night with Ilya in room 1410 in this hotel and still being fit to play tomorrow. What if the Centaurs stayed in *that* hotel in Toronto one time? What if Shane and Ilya got assigned room 1410?

When they had ordered a round of cheap tequila, one of them had questioned Shane briefly. “How old are you, Rook?” “Old enough,” Shane had answered truthfully, but it wasn’t his fault that The Short American hadn’t specified on which side of the border. The drinks kept pouring in after that. Scott Hunter convinces Shane Hollander to join the team at a bar the night after the All-Star Skills Competition. He hadn't meant for Shane to get as drunk as he did.

“Hollander,” Ilya greeted. He was leaning over the partition of Shane's desk with a lop-sided smile on his face. “Rozanov,” Shane said pointedly. “You sound upset.” “I’m not upset.” “It is too early in the morning for you to look like you want to kill me,” Ilya pointed out. “It’s never too early for that,” Shane threw back, unnecessarily shuffling some papers around on his desk. “Do you need something?” “A pen,” Ilya shrugged, not being able to stop the dumb smile forming on his face at Shane’s reaction. or, ilya and shane are co-workers. they like each other but are oblivious idiots about it. also, it's christmas!

“34 is not that old, Ilya. And he’s in amazing shape too.” Ilya says nothing for a few seconds and Shane glances up again from typing to see he’s being stared at with teasing eyes. He hates how the look still makes his heart flutter and neck go warm. “Amazing shape,” Ilya parrots in a poor North American accent. “So kind of you to notice, Hollander. Good to know for future matches.” The smirk that launched a thousand penalty shots. “Or maybe you just like looking at older boring hockey players? Good to know for me.” - Shane knows he’s the jealous type. He just didn’t know Ilya would be even worse.

Just a little Holiday Hollanov to take the edge off. Shane and Ilya turn a wholesome Christmas activity into a very serious competition because they are adorable. --- “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. “I bought everything we need to do this!” Shane came back with a ruler in hand before sitting down to start studying the instructions on the back of one of the gingerbread kit boxes. “Oh my god, Hollander, you are so boring.” Ilya said, the grin on his face betraying his attempt at an exasperated tone. “Is cookies and candy. For fun. We do not need to measure.” Ottawa - December “We are building gingerbread houses tonight.” Shane Hollander looked up from the couch where he was lying with their dog Anya sprawled against his chest. “What? Why?” “Because I saw children making them on TikTok,” his husband, Ilya Rozanov responded, haphazardly dumping grocery bags full of gingerbread kits, icing, and candy out onto the dining table while humming Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ under his breath. Shane sat up gently, trying not to disturb Anya, who was still snuggling into his warmth, one ear pointed in the direction of the noise coming from the dining room. “We aren’t children.” “No,” Ilya agreed gravely. “We are better.” Shane squinted. “Are you trying to compete with kids?” “I am competing with you,” Ilya corrected. Shane smirked and finally got up from the couch to head toward the mountain of supplies that now took up their entire table, Anya trotting happily behind him. This was the first year in their entire relationship that they would get the full holiday season together. The NHL always gave them a few days off around Christmas, but it was just enough to rest and recover from months of travel, muscle aches, and getting slammed into boards and ice for a living. They still had games to play but now that they were on the same team, they got to spend all of December together. Really, they got every day and every night of the year together, which still felt like a dream after so many years of only seeing each other a handful of times during the regular season. Ilya didn’t used to care much about Christmas, happy to spend a night cooking and eating a festive meal with Shane’s parents, but this year he had decided to truly get in the spirit. Apparently starting with making a giant, sticky mess on their beautiful dining table. “You know, those kids probably had adult supervision,” Shane said. “Who’s going to supervise you while I’m busy building my masterpiece?” “That is why we have Anya, world’s best dog!” Ilya said, getting on his knees to scratch her behind her ears and kissing her on the soft fur between her eyes. Shane sighed and bent down to join their cuddle fest. “I love you, but this is going to be a disaster.” “For you, maybe,” Ilya grinned. Shane stood back up and headed toward the kitchen. “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. For fun. We do not need to measure.” “I want mine to stay up!” Shane explained. “Then I can have fun adding cool details once I have a perfect foundation.” Choosing to ignore the overly amused look Ilya was burning into the top of his head, Shane got to work precisely laying out cookies and carefully securing them with thin lines of icing. Just enough to ensure stability, but not so much that the icing wouldn’t dry in time. He thought it actually looked pretty good! He wanted to start adding some candy, maybe some peppermints or blue M&M’s, or it looked like Ilya had gotten some pretty cool candy that looked like snowflakes. Gummies seemed gross to add, so he planned to avoid those. Did it matter? Do people even eat their gingerbread houses or are they just for deco- His thoughts were interrupted by Ilya loudly munching on gingerbread. “Ilya! Why are you eating the roof tiles, you need those!” Shane cried out, horrified. “I am testing structural integrity,” Ilya said, still chewing. “I think it failed the test,” Shane deadpanned, gesturing to what was left of the integral roof piece. Ilya waved him off. “I will improvise. I never had these exact cookies before; they taste a bit like ones we had growing up called pryaniki.” Shane smiled at him, momentarily setting aside his very genuine concern for Ilya’s gingerbread house. Ilya didn’t talk about Russia a lot but Shane loved any glimpse into where Ilya came from. The good and the bad. “Maybe we could try making those together this week.” Ilya grinned back. “Yes, a new cookie activity for every day of the month.” “So… just ignoring the directions, then?” Shane asked, raising one eyebrow as Ilya took another bite of roof cookie. “I do not follow directions,” Ilya said, grabbing a handful of gumdrops and popping one into his mouth seductively. “I follow instincts.” “Your instincts are made of sugar.” “Yes.” They decided they would give themselves one more hour to finish up before judgment time. Shane took a look at his final product.

After not speaking for over four months, Ilya is perturbed by headlines that Shane has suddenly married an American pop star. Excerpt: Shane Hollander opened the door to find a 6’3 seething Russian in the hallway. “What…” he angled his head to peer around Ilya’s rigid, imposing figure. “What are you doing here?” Ilya shoved a magazine at him. “Annul it.” “No seriously. Where’d you even come from?” “Hollander.” Icy warning wrapped around each syllable. “Aren’t you presenting at the ESPYs tonight?” “Am home sick,” Ilya barked, pushing his way into Shane’s apartment. “Is true?” he gestured toward the magazine Shane had yet to acknowledge. “End it. Now.” “End what…” Shane looked down, frowning when he realized it was the fucking 'National Enquirer'. What the actual fuck? “Oh…” he breathed, the top box on the front page catching his eye. “You’re too far,” Shane murmurs, voice still gravel-rough. It’s barely an inch of space, but it feels unbearable. Ilya’s answering laugh ghosts against Shane’s cheek. “I’m right here.” “Not close enough.” Shane’s fingers curl at the nape of his neck, tugging him down until their foreheads meet. When an accident on the ice leaves Shane fighting for his life, Ilya tries to keep it together when facing the prospect of losing the love of his life before they got the chance to really live. Shane had been hit with a puck before, usually brushing it off with the knowledge that he would be sporting a hell of a bruise for a while. Which was why it felt so strange to him that he couldn’t hear Hayden talking to him after taking a slapshot to the center of his chest. He tried to reassure his friend that he was okay, but the world turned off instead. Ilya couldn’t breathe. It was one of the few times in the game that he was on the bench, without being in the penalty box, and he had seen the puck collide into his boyfriend’s chest. He had winced in sympathy, but had been too concerned. That changed when Hollander had wobbled, then collapsed to the ice without doing anything to stop his fall. Hayden’s lunge forward was the only thing that stopped Shane’s face from slamming into the ice. Out of the corner of his eye, Ilya saw the medics starting to head for the ice, and everything started spinning when Hayden started doing chest compressions with panic on his face. “Folks, please stay in your seats to keep all aisles clear for the medics.” Came over the loudspeaker as Ilya tried to fight against Troy’s restraining arms. They both knew the request to keep the aisles clear meant a catastrophic injury. Hayden was being pushed away by one of the refs, giving the medics room to work, and the other man sent a horrified look at the benches that Ilya knew was for him. Ilya couldn’t have stopped the sob that left him if he had wanted to when a medic cut Hollander’s jersey open, followed by the shoulder pads that had done little to protect his chest. Thankfully for their secret, no one in the now silent area seemed to care or be doing much better. Pads for the shock-thing that Ilya could never remember the name of were slapped on Hollander’s bare chest, and everyone in the stands and benches waited with bated breath as it spoke. Ilya gave up pretending to be okay when the machine recommended a shock, and dropped his head into his folded arms on the half wall separating them from the ice. He could feel Troy rubbing his back, and only lifted his head high enough to see when a medic yelled clear. A whimper left him as the love of his life jerked on the ice, and he sobbed openly when he heard another medic report that there was a heartbeat. Things moved even faster after that. “Looks like the medics are getting ready to move Hollander off the ice, so we ask everyone to remain in their seats. We are getting information that the rest of the game is going to be postponed and rescheduled to a later date. The current score and stats will be carried over.” The Centaur's coach started herding the players from the bench and into the locker room, but Ilya refused to move from his seat, his eyes glued to his boyfriend's still form. Weibe finally made his way over to gently grab onto the back of Ilya’s neck. “The sooner we get you changed, the sooner you can get to him.” Weibe whispered, giving his neck a paternal squeeze despite barely being old enough to be Ilya’s father. By that time, the medics were moving Shane off the ice, so Ilya gave in to the advice and left the bench. They hadn’t meant to come out the entire Centaurs roster, but they had decided to show up unannounced at Ilya’s Ottawa home while the couple was in the shower. It was too difficult to explain away, so they went with the truth and were pleasantly surprised when it was relatively well received. None of them had cared that they were interested in men, though coming to grips with the fact that the two biggest rivals in the NHL were a committed couple took a little longer. It had been a huge relief to both Shane and Ilya in different ways. For Ilya, it meant a place where he didn’t have to hide how much he loved his boyfriend, and for Shane, it was hope that things might not be that bad once they went public. The only change was the teasing Rozanov got about using the rivalry as flirtation and foreplay. He’d never been more thankful for the unintentional outing than that moment. The moment he walked through the locker room doors, hands were there to help strip him out of his gear. He followed their instructions on autopilot, too numb with fear to do anything else. It took less than five minutes to have him stripped, pushed into the shower, dried off, and dressed. When he was pushed out of the locker room with well-wishes and assurances that they would meet him at the hospital as soon as they could, David Hollander was waiting for him. “I didn’t think you’d be in any shape to drive.” Shane’s father told him, taking Ilya’s keys from limp hands. “Are you?” Ilya found himself asking quietly. “Not really, but I can pretend for a bit.” David admitted, and Rozanov followed him silently out to the parking lot. He was a little surprised Yuna wasn’t there, but assumed that she had gone in the ambulance with her son. The Russian was thankful he had driven his sensible car to the game, since he wasn’t sure either one could drive a high-performance sports car in their state, and spent the drive to the hospital in near silence. He gripped onto his mother’s crucifix hard, muttering prayers in Russian that he had never claimed to believe in. Begging not to lose Shane like he had lost his mother. “What happened?” He finally asked, breaking the silence. “His heart…fine before.” English was being difficult as his mind raced in panicked circles, forgetting words other than those in his native language. His accent was more pronounced as well, and he felt like that seventeen- year-old visiting Canada for the first time nearly a decade ago. “We don’t know.” David admitted, nearly as softly. It made Ilya fight back terrified tears. “His heart stopped, we know that, just not why. But it was beating normally when they got him to the ambulance.” It was something. Knowing that Shane’s heart was beating again made it feel like Ilya could breathe again. They pulled into the first parking spot they saw and both rushed out of the car. David was through the door immediately, but Ilya hesitated. As long as he was outside, as long as no one told him that something had gone wrong, his Hollander was fine. He was alive. He could still love Ilya back. Yuna walking out ruined the pretense, and he braced himself for bad news. “Shane’s okay, Ilya. He’s fine and starting to wake up.” She told the young man she had started to claim as her own. The relief that flowed through Rozanov made his knees shake, and he had to force himself to stay upright so Yuna could get him inside. She walked him past the check-in desk, and Ilya realized that meant that Shane was already in a room. “Hey.” Shane said with a tired smile when he saw Ilya, who immediately made his way to the bed and gently rested his forehead against the other man’s. “Never do that to me again, Hollander.” He murmured in Russian, which had Shane reaching up to cup the back of Ilya’s head to keep him there for a moment.

Shane does not get off. Instead, he presses the button for Penthouse 1 and hits send on We didn’t even kiss. He watches the floor numbers increase as the elevator carries him back to Ilya.
