A blurry video, the nightclub lights dancing in neon pink. Two tall, muscular figures dance in a corner, focused completely on the other as they sway into each other. It blows the internet up. Or, a video of Shane grinding on Ilya, drunk out of his mind, is leaked. It goes predictably. OR, Hollanov are hoes and keep on exposing their sex life. They make it everyone's problem. Ilya stepped over the bags on the floor, shoes still on his feet and held the pink thing to Shane's face. “Look!” Before Shane could do anything a quiet “Meow” came from the fabric bundle and Ilya squealed in delight. “Did your hat just meow?” Shane asked, completely bewildered. Ilya snorted loudly. “Is not hat. Look! It's a kitty.” He held the bundle even closer and Shane spotted two black pointed ears and a tiny pink nose. Or: How Ilya and Shane became cat parents

Based very loosely on events from The Long Game that my brain wanted to put into the first book, somewhere between Shane’s injury, and before Scott Hunter wins the cup - for maximum angst, obviously.
What if Ilya’s plane had actually crashed? And what if it had happened before he and Shane had the chance to confess their love and know what it was like to be together.
Or
A fic so I could write a really needy Shane who can't hide his feelings anymore, and an Ilya who is faced with the undeniable truth that someone cares for him.

'Shane nodded, listening to his boyfriend. He’d realized before, that whenever the other would talk about Russia, his accent would thicken. It would also be like that when Ilya was excited about something. His accent would be much more present again; endearing, really. He also sometimes mixed Russian words into his sentences, something he only ever seemed to do around Shane, though. “What are bliny?” Shane asked then. “Блины,” the other corrected.' --- Shane and Ilya have a late night talk, where Ilya talks about his grandparents for the very first time. Shane decides to cook something for Ilya as he seemed happy remembering it that night. And Ilya is very obsessed with Davids homemade bread. Or, they cuddle, talk and eat.

The Phone Call by Rain_And_Books (Huni_obri)
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-15
“I’m fine,” Hayden snapped, voice cracking just a little. “You’re on drugs. You’re confused. Let’s maybe not talk about your... your marital activities.” He looked away from the man, finding the floor much more intriguing. “But it’s true! And you’ve heard them before.” The Russian explained, and Hayden paused. “No. I didn’t. I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” Ilya smiled. And Hayden groaned; it was one of those cocky smiles that he had whenever he was about to be an asshole. Which was always. Or Ilya gets sent to the hospital after he collapses. Now, all drugged up, he starts explaining to Hayden what happened during the phone call when he and Shane were at the cottage. Hayden sat on the chair watching Rozanov, contemplating every life decision he had ever made. Why did he agree to come with Shane to the hospital again? Oh, right, cause he’s a supportive friend and loves Shane. Rozanov’s chest rose and fell with his breaths. The man was still unconscious, the drugs they gave him knocking him out. Shane had to run home to get a couple of things and left Hayden all by himself. He had asked him to watch over Ilya in case he woke up, because he didn’t want his husband to be left alone. And now Hayden had to suffer through watching Rozanov. Though as long as he remained asleep, Hayden would be fine with it. Of course, Rozanov did not care for his comfort. Hayden had just started to relax, or as much as he could relax in a plastic chair that seemed designed to punish the human spine, when the steady rhythm of Rozanov’s breathing stammered. Hayden straightened instantly. “No,” he muttered under his breath. “Absolutely not.” Rozanov’s brow furrowed, the crease between his eyebrows deepening. His fingers twitched against the sheets. Once. Twice. Hayden leaned forward despite himself, eyes fixed on the bed. He told himself this was his responsibility. That Shane had trusted him with this. That if Rozanov woke up and tried to rip out his IV or start a fight with the heart monitor, it would technically be Hayden’s fault. His eyelids fluttered. Hayden groaned softly and scrubbed a hand down his face. “You have got to be kidding me.” Rozanov’s eyes opened, slow, unfocused, glassy with medication. For a long moment, he just stared at the ceiling, breathing shallow and uneven, like the air itself was an inconvenience. Then his gaze shifted. And landed on Hayden. Rozanov squinted, clearly trying to piece together reality. He then slowly moved his head away from Hayden and around the room. “Where is… Shane?” “Gone,” Hayden said. Then, because he wasn’t a monster - because he saw the hurt appear on Rozanov’s face and he didn’t want to see that expression on anyone’s face, even if he was Rozanov, he added. “Home. He’ll be back.” Rozanov’s face relaxed slightly, even though his body remained stiff. His fingers curled in the sheets again, knuckles whitening. “You stayed.” “He left me here,” Hayden corrected. “Against my will.” That earned him a faint huff of breath that might have been a laugh if it hadn’t sounded so painful. Rozanov closed his eyes for a second, regaining his composure. As much as he could in his highly medicated state. “You look,” Rozanov murmured, “miserable.” “Thank you,” Hayden said. “I’ve been working on that.” Another silence stretched between them. The machines filled it, beeping steadily, unbothered by the tension coiling in the room. Hayden shifted in his chair, suddenly aware of how close the bed was, how fragile Rozanov looked despite everything he knew about the man. Rozanov swallowed. “I don’t remember… coming here,” he admitted. “You collapsed on the ice,” Hayden said before he could stop himself. “Scared the hell out of Shane.” Rozanov’s eyes flicked back to him, something raw and unsettled flashing across his face before he masked it. He stared at the ceiling again, jaw clenched, like he could will himself back into unconsciousness. He remembered the sudden collapse of Rozanov. Montreal and Ottawa were playing against each other, and as soon as Ilya’s body collided with the ice, Shane became an absolute mess. Thankfully, Rozanov fainted towards the end of the third period; otherwise, Hayden was sure, the paramedics would have had to deal with two hockey players in need of medical assistance with Shane’s impending panic attack. Hayden exhaled slowly. Great. Wide awake. Alone together. This was going to be a long wait. “I want Shane,” Rozanov complained. Hayden sighed. “He’ll be here soon. He just needed to go grab some of your things.” Hayden explained again. He knew Rozanov was medicated, but he really didn’t want to keep repeating himself for the entirety of Shane’s absence. “But why couldn’t he go later?” Ilya whined. Hayden resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Somehow, this particular brand of Rozanov chaos was… almost amusing. He had half a mind to take out his phone and record him, just to spite him afterwards. “Because we didn’t expect you’d wake up already. He thought he’d come back to you still asleep.” Ilya frowned, as if Hayden had just told him the world’s greatest injustice. “But Shane is supposed to be here when I wake up.” “I know,” Hayden said, through gritted teeth. “He will be. Soon.” Ilya stared at the ceiling for a moment, then turned his head again, eyes unfocused. “He usually is.” Hayden paused, unsure where this was going. And kinda scared. Rozanov on a normal day was an ass, Rozanov high on drugs… “Usually is what?” “Here, when I wake up,” Ilya clarified. “Or when I fall asleep. Or in between.” He hummed thoughtfully. “Especially in between.” A lopsided smile appeared on his face, his eyes closing as if he had lost himself in a memory. Hayden felt something cold settle in his spine. He had a bad feeling about where this was going. “Okay,” he said quickly. “We don’t need to-“ “Because we have sex,” Ilya said, plainly. Hayden choked on absolutely nothing. “Yep. There it is.” He said, mortified, and then muttered. “I’m gonna kill Shane.” Ilya blinked at him,

During the finalist game, Shane changes up his jersey. - "You're not actually going to wear that, right?" Hayden asked, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It's my last name," Shane responded, brows furrowed. "I can wear the fucking jersey." Ilya noticed. He wasn't fucking dumb, and he was married to him, to Shane. Of course, he was going to notice if something was up with him. He'd be dumb, and a fucking asshole at that if he didn't know something was freaking out Shane, his husband of three years. He saw the fidgeting, the way he was walking around the house, going in and out of rooms, pacing. And in the way he looked at Ilya, before shifting his gaze, tearing his eyes away. Something was wrong. When Shane stepped into the room again, Ilya didn’t hesitate. He reached for him, his hand sliding easily around his waist, pulling him in. He buried his face in his hair and leaned into him like it was second nature. He smelled like her shampoo, soft, familiar, and like home. “My love, what is wrong?” he asked, his voice muffled against his head. “Nothing,” he said quickly, too quickly. Ilya pulled back just enough to look at him. Shane's jaw was tight, his eyes flicking off to the side instead of meeting his. He frowned, brows knitting together in that way he knew all too well. “You are lying,” he said—not accusing, just certain. Shane caught his bottom lip between his teeth, "Just.. you're certain you'll be coming to the game tonight, right?" Ilya smiled. So that was it. "Yes, любовь, god, I told you million times that I am going with your mom and dad. It is the finalist game, Shane. I will watch you win." He blushed a little at that, "We don't know if Montreal will win, since they-" "Shhh." Ilya pressed a finger to his lips, lifting another hand toward his chin, lifting it till their eyes met. He spoke in Russian, slowly, enunciating each word so Shane could understand. "I will watch and you will win. Then we celebrate at home with your mom and dad. Then they will leave, and I will reward you, okay?" Shane blushed harder, pink decorating his face. "Okay." ◙▒◙ ♫♩♬ The locker room was long and narrow, lined with rows of dented metal lockers that rattled softly every time one was opened or shut. The air carried a mix of faint soap, sweat, and deodorant. Benches ran down the center, their wooden slats smoothed from years of use, creaking when someone sat down too quickly. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a pale glow that made everything look a little washed out. Somewhere in the background, a shower dripped steadily, echoing against the tiled walls, while voices bounced around the room, laughing, complaining, calling out names, filling the space with an easy, familiar chaos. Shane stood at his own locker, staring at his own jersey. Heat rushed to his face before he could stop it, a slow, creeping warmth that settled in his cheeks and refused to leave. He wondered how Ilya was going to react, what he was going to say when he walked out onto the ice. Someone clapped a hand on his shoulder, "Captain, we go on in five. Get dressed already!" Shane and Hayden looked at each other before both of their eyes trailed down to the jersey clasped in his hand. "Oh my fucking god.." Shane tensed up, "What?" "You're not actually going to wear that, right?" He asked, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It's my last name," Shane responded, brows furrowed. "I can wear the fucking jersey." He smiled before continuing, "I'll actually only be responding to the team when they call me by my actual last name." JJ appeared next, laying both arms on Shane and Hayden's shoulders. "Coach will kill if you guys do not come in three mi—fucking!" He yelled, before pointing, jabbing his finger onto the jersey, over the white lettering, "What the—what the fuck!?" Hayden looked back at JJ, pulling at his hair, "And we have to call him that for the whole fucking game!" Shane just laughed, "Yeah, you do." ◙▒◙ ♫♩♬ The hockey arena was cold in a way that seeped through clothes and settled into the bones, the sharp scent of ice and metal hanging in the air. The rink stretched wide and bright under the harsh overhead lights, the surface smooth and freshly cut, marked by bold red and blue lines that stood out against the white. The boards were scuffed and scarred from years of impact, plexiglass rising above them, smudged with fingerprints and streaks from flying pucks. The sound of skates slicing into the ice echoed sharply, every stop and turn ringing out like a snap of thunder. The audience filled the stands in thick, restless rows, bundled in jerseys, scarves, and winter coats. Some leaned forward eagerly, elbows on their knees, while others stood to shout, clap, or pound on the glass. Cheers rolled through the arena in waves, faces blurred together in a sea of excitement and anticipation, eyes glued to the ice.

“So… you and Rozanov, huh? That's a thing now?” Shane freezes, “What?” You're starting to sound like him. They never really talked about that, just moved on like nothing happened. After Scott kissed his boyfriend on the ice, Shane knew it wasn't meant to be anything homophobic, but he'd always still felt hesitant about it. While Scott might know about being a gay NHL player, even he wouldn't understand this. Besides, the media might have focused on Shane and Ilya being rivals, but there had always been much more hostility between Ilya and Scott. Scott gives him a strange look, “You're friends now, right? Or is that all PR?” “Oh.” He tries his best to remain calm and relaxed, even if his heart is beating loudly in his chest, “Yes. I mean, we've been friends for… a long time. Just… the media blew the whole rivalry out of proportion and it was… easier.” Scott nods slowly, sipping his drink, “How, though? I mean, no offense, but he's… well, an asshole.” (Or, Shane runs into Scott, who finds out their secret)
