  2. It's New Years' Eve and Shane takes a Vodka-induced spiral through a level of jealousy he didn't know existed.

    ----

He looked over the rim of his glass, eyes immediately landing on Ilya’s laughing face on the other side of the club near the bar. He had his arm slung over Svetlana’s shoulders, her neck comfortably at the bend of his elbow. Shane’s teeth ground together when Ilya used the crook of his arm to pull Svetlana closer, Ilya's head tipping down to place his ear near her mouth.

It was Ilya’s turn to lean in to speak in Svetlana’s ear, a grin spreading over Svetlana’s gorgeous face as she listened to his words.

Shane could vividly imagine what Ilya’s voice would sound like at this point. It would be raspy and rough, like a rumble. He’d heard him sound like that a thousand times and Shane would never be sick of it. It made his chest tight, his heart hammering to think about the way Ilya’s soft lips would brush along his ear. How his tongue would lick up the shell before nipping at the spot under Shane’s ear that made him moan.

But he wasn’t doing any of that. He was talking to Svetlana. His friend.

  3. "I can't wait for them to put your tooth back in," Shane tells him when they get back home after the game. "What? You do not like sticking your tongue through my hole?" "Ew. No, I do not like it when you push my tongue into the spot where your missing tooth is." OR boston fans attack ilya before a game but he is determined not to let it ruin his season "I am so fucking sorry." Hayden repeats again. Shane nods, his chest is tight and that is as much of a response as he can manage. Yuna finds the words for him. "It's okay Hayden. We all know it was an accident." The crisis response team has gathered at Shane's house in Montreal. Shane's parents, Hayden and Jackie, mill around the living room. Farah, Shane and Ilya's shared agent joins them over a video call. "I knew we shouldn't have given the kids screens. Let alone ones that connect to the internet." Jackie sighs. Hayden's phone had been glitching so he signed onto Instagram on the girls' tablet to scroll. He had left his account logged in and somehow Ruby had managed to post a video to his account. Not just any video, but a video the kids had taken on the day Shane and Ilya had spent babysitting them. It showed the two men exchanging their vows, dressed up in play clothes standing in the Pike's living room. It showed their quick kiss, and the dance party that followed and the longer, more tender kisses they had stolen when the kids weren't looking. "I just still can't get over how I wasn't invited to my own son's wedding." David jokes. A small laugh comes from around the room. Shane brain is stormy with anxiety but he manages to fire enough neurons to put a small smile on his face. "I didn't even notice the girls were taping us." The video, admittedly, was very cute. If it had been kept private Shane would've cherished it. But despite Hayden deleting it minutes after it was posted, it had blown up and was all over the internet. "It is nice that we have a video," Ilya says, returning from the next room where he had been taking a phone call. He places his hands on Shane's shoulders and tries to squeeze some of the tension out of them. "Of the happiest moment of my life." "You know I still expect a real wedding, right?" Yuna says seriously. "One with an officiant and flowers." "We will have a big wedding." Ilya smiles and leans down to kiss Shane's cheek. "With a giant cake, and hundreds of people on a private island. Maybe fireworks, yes?" As nice as it was to imagine a big wedding to love of his life, the shadow of reality was still looming darkly over Shane's head. "If we both lose our jobs in the NHL it might be hard to afford a big wedding," Shane mutters. "But that's not going to happen. Right Farah?" Yuna says. It takes a second for Farah to unmute herself. "We're not going to let that happen. The commissioner may not be happy about this but you've got a lot of people on your side. The fans, your teammates, and our lawyers are suiting up. We're ready to fight whatever the league throws our way." "She is right. I just finished call with Coach Wiebe. He says we have his full support. Both of us." Ilya states. "We're here for you. Anything you guys need. Really." Hayden adds. Shane lets out a sigh. It's not quite relief, but something inside of him starts to settle. It's tough at first. The first few practices, the first road trip after they are outed are tough. Shane's team gives him icy looks. Some hockey fans travel to Ottawa with homophobic signs and are kicked out of the arena. There's a media circus about it. But soon another hockey scandal comes and takes some of the attention away. A Carolina player tests positive for steroids, and he's benched. There are good changes too. More and more hockey fans bring pride flags to games. Articles are written about the hockey husbands. And Shane and Ilya can go out in public. At first, they start with private restaurants, walking trails. Then there's a charity gala and they are photographed on the red carpet together. And they look good together. Really good. They are asked if they want to be on the cover of OUT magazine together. They discuss the opportunity over the phone, while lounging in their respective hotel rooms. "I don't know. Wouldn't it kind of be pushing it in everyone's face?" Shane worries. "I want it in their faces. They should be jealous of me and my hot boyfriend," Ilya makes a kissy face and smiles. Shane chuckes. "Yeah. I mean it would be fun. And it might be nice to finally have photos together where we aren't in hockey gear." "Yes. I want a photo with you in sexy clothes. We should practice our modeling. You should send me a picture." "The only problem is I think I forgot to pack my sexy clothes." "Ah. No worries. No clothes will work too." The photoshoot goes viral. Not so much with the hockey fans, but the rest of the internet eats it up. People use the photos as reaction pics on twitter. A few influencers try and recreate the elaborate athletic poses featured, which turns into a TikTok challenge of its own. They partner with a charity supporting homeless LGBTQ youth to auction off a signed Hollander-

  4. The team celebrates Shane Hollander’s mysterious new girlfriend. Hayden Pike, unfortunately, thinks Shane is cheating on her with Ilya Rozanov. Hayden Pike prided himself on reading people sharper than anyone else in the Montreal Metros’ locker room. He could clock a lie, a hangover, or a guy’s panic before the laces were even knotted. That skill had been earned the hard way, through seasons of listening to teammates bullshit their way around bad hookups, brutal benders, or shifts they’d rather forget. Yet none of that groundwork prepared him for the afternoon the entire room turned into a pack of howling teenagers because Shane Hollander was apparently, at long last, getting steady pussy. The mayhem ignited from nothing more than the usual post-practice sloppiness. Phones and gear lay scattered across benches as guys rushed for showers or the parking lot. Shane, still soaked in sweat, had dropped his phone face-up and walked off to the showers without a second thought. The screen glowed brightly when a notification slid in from a contact saved simply as “Lily.” The message hit like a slapshot: “come tonight 🍆” The rookie who spotted it first let out a whoop that ricocheted off the tiled walls. “Holy shit, Captain’s got a girl!” Hayden had learned years ago that a hockey locker room operated like one giant, not-very- bright organism. Individually, the players varied widely, from intelligent types to complete meatheads who sometimes seemed unsure which direction the rink faced. As soon as the group latched onto a scandalous bit of gossip, however, the collective grip tightened more securely than new tape wrapped around a stick blade. Facts became irrelevant. From that moment forward, Shane Hollander was indisputably enjoying sex with a woman named Lily, and the verdict stood final. The news brought an involuntary grin to Hayden’s face. He could easily imagine Shane navigating those awkward, sincere dates, arriving with flowers in hand, holding doors open, and working hard to impress a woman already bold enough to send an eggplant emoji without hesitation. The whole picture carried an oddly endearing quality, absurd as it was, and Hayden experienced a ridiculous rush of pride, as though he had somehow orchestrated the end of Shane’s famously prolonged drought. The moment Shane returned from the showers, towel tied low around his hips and hair still dripping, the onslaught of ribbing crashed into him like a blindside hit. The guys didn’t hold back. “Lily got you smiling like that, huh, Hollander?” “She got a friend who’s into defensemen?” “Tell her the whole room owes her a fruit basket for finally popping your cherry right.” Shane’s face went scarlet, the flush starting at his ears and spreading quickly. It was the same one he got when coaches yelled at him or when he missed an easy shot. He muttered something half-hearted about them minding their own fucking business, but the words came out weak and only made everyone laugh harder. As the crowd thinned and they stepped into the quieter hallway, Hayden pulled Shane aside with a light grip on his arm. Shane looked at him with cautious eyes. “Hayden,” he started, his voice low. Hayden lifted both hands in a peaceful gesture. “Relax, man. You don’t have to say anything. I’m just happy for you. Seriously. About time you got your dick wet somewhere that isn’t your own hand.” Shane opened his mouth, then closed it again. He offered one of those tight smiles that could mean anything from thank you to go fuck yourself. Hayden took it as gratitude. After all, Shane was a good dude. He worked hard and was the kind of guy who would spot you a hundred bucks without ever mentioning it again. He deserved someone to go home to, someone who could ride him until he forgot about turnovers and penalty kills for a few hours, even if imagining Shane actually in bed felt strangely impossible with that clean-cut face of his. Later that night, after the game against Boston, Hayden could not sleep. The game had been typical enough where Ilya Rozanov was concerned. Ilya had been his usual insufferable self, smirking across the ice like he owned the rink and chirping Shane in Russian that sounded suspiciously flirty. But rivals were going to rival, so Hayden pushed the thought aside. Still, insomnia gripped Hayden tightly. He had forgotten the melatonin gummies Jackie always packed in his travel bag, complete with her usual lecture on self-care. Too restless to stay in bed, he wandered the hotel hallways in his sweats, barefoot, hoping for anything that might quiet the buzz in his head. He had just reached Shane’s door when a sound stopped him cold. It was a moan that carried clearly through the thin walls. “Shit…” the voice rasped. Hayden’s pulse jumped. His first thought was injury. Maybe Shane had aggravated something in the third period and was toughing out the pain alone. Or perhaps he had hit the bar too hard after the game and was now regretting it. Or, more awkwardly, their strait-laced captain had turned up some hotel porn and forgotten to keep the volume down. Then another moan drifted, followed by a breathless, accented growl. Hayden froze. He recognized it instantly for what it was: pure, unfiltered sex.

  5. Shane trembles harder, overwhelmed by the praise, the possession lacing Ilya’s voice. Heat coils tight in his stomach, pressure winding. He clings to Ilya like he might float away. “Ilya,” he gasps. “I—” Ilya cards fingers through Shane’s hair, pushing damp locks off his forehead. “That’s right. You’re perfect. So pretty for me.” Shane’s face flames. The insecurity is still there, but it transforms into a desperate need for reassurance. Voice shaking, he stammers, “P-pretty… I’m—prettier?” Ilya’s thrust stutters for a heartbeat, then he groans, burying his face in Shane’s neck. “The prettiest,” he growls, words vibrating against Shane’s skin. “All mine.” It's bad enough that Shane has to do warm-ups in a giant bunny suit. It's worse that Ilya's stunning ex-boyfriend picks that exact moment to visit. It's a catastrophe when said ex starts offering unsolicited advice about what Ilya likes done with his cock. Shane’s about two seconds from losing it.

  17. hayden had no clue why ilya fucking rozanov of all people was in shane's room when he arrived at the hospital, but thanks to his best friend's lack of filter on a hefty dose of painkillers, it doesn't take him long to find out. The hospital room door closed softly behind him as Hayden walked towards the bed. He was frowning, still trying to figure out why he'd had to wait while Ilya fucking Rozanov of all people visited Shane before him. Shane's eyes were half-lidded, glazed with a cocktail of painkillers, a dreamy smile plastered across his face. "So," Hayden started, his voice cautious. "That was... weird. Ilya Rozanov here in your hospital room. For like, ten whole minutes. What the hell was that about?" "Oh hey, Hayden. Heeeeeyyyy-den, " Shane said in a sing-song voice. "He came to check on me. Isn't he the sweetest?" Hayden stared at his best friend. "Sweetest? Shane, buddy, the doctors said you had a concussion, not a personality transplant. That was Rozanov. The guy who plays like he wants to murder us. I don't think he even has a 'sweet' setting." "Oh, pfff," Shane sighed, waving a hand dismissively. The movement was loose and uncoordinated. "That’s just his game face. Like Batman. But underneath? Total marshmallow. He was really worried about me. I wanted to hold his hands to stop them shaking so much, but he was paranoid about the nurses coming in, I could tell." Hayden pulled the visitor’s chair closer and sat down very slowly, as if making any sudden movements might worsen Shane's apparent delirium. "You... wanted to hold hands? With Rozanov? I’m gonna need a minute here." "I thought he might speak to me in Russian," Shane continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial, affectionate whisper. "It's nice when he does that. You know how his voice gets all deep and rumbly? It vibrates right in your chest. It's relaxing, like a cat purring. A really big, angry cat." "I'm not sure anything about that guy counts as relaxing," Hayden said doubtfully. "No, s'nice," Shane insisted, his brow furrowing slightly at Hayden’s lack of understanding. "Soft, like a lullaby. I could listen all day. Like the voice notes he sends. You know, the ones you make fun of because they're so long." Hayden paused. "The voice notes? From Lily, you mean." Shane rolled his eyes, a dramatic motion of annoyance. "Yes, from Lily. He sends the long voice notes when he's stressed. We talked about this." "We talked about Lily," Hayden’s voice was faint. "The girl you've been sexting for years. The one you always see when we're - " Hayden stared blankly at the wall. The pieces were suddenly fitting together in his mind, regardless of how much he didn't like the picture they were forming. "Lily... is Ilya. Your Lily is Ilya Rozanov." Shane let out a huff of laughter. "Well, yeah. You think I have two high-maintenance hockey obsessives who text me at all hours? I do not have the energy for that. I mean, sometimes I don't have the energy for one, with all the late nights and the sneaking around, " Shane continued, oblivious to Hayden's spiralling crisis. "But it's worth it. It’s actually really romantic. Like a spy movie." "A spy movie," Hayden repeated, his voice muffled by his palms. "Yeah." Shane shifted, wincing slightly, but the smile never left his face. "You know the grey hoodie he wears? The one with the bleach stain on the cuff?" "I can't say I've ever noticed." "Well that’s his 'Lily' hoodie," Shane said, his eyes sparkling with a secret he thought they already shared. "For when we have to be all stealthy. I love that hoodie. It smells like his cologne and hotel soap. It makes me think of stairwells, or service elevators, or..." Hayden looked up, horrified. "Service elevators? You’re meeting up with the captain of the Boston Raiders in service elevators?" "Well, and hotel rooms, obviously," Shane retorted. "Sometimes my place. Or his. He made us tuna melts." "Tuna melts," Hayden repeated. This was the detail that broke him, he realised afterwards. Not the sex, not the secrecy, but the fucking sandwiches. "He acts like he’s this big tough guy," Shane says dreamily. " 'I am Ilya Rozanov, I am machine' but he takes such good care of me, Hayds." Shane’s energy began to flag as the conversation drained the last of his reserves. He sank deeper into the pillows, his eyelids fluttering. "He called me, you know," Shane mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "From Moscow. After the funeral." Hayden softened at the mention of Ilya's loss. "He called you?" "Yeah. He was so sad. About his dad, about a lot of things. He told me he loved me." Hayden froze. "He said it in Russian," Shane said. "But I knew. I could feel it. He thinks he always has be alone, but he doesn't. I’m gonna marry him one day, H. We’re gonna get a house and he’s gonna make me sandwiches and we’re gonna be so boring. You'll come visit, right? You and Jackie and the kids?" "You love him," Hayden murmured. It wasn't a question. "Yeah," Shane sighed, a long, contented exhale, his eyes finally closing. "Don't tell him that though, cos we haven't said it yet. He’s my very favourite person. He likes to think he’s
