"I'm not gay."
"Okay you're not gay. But something made you call a gay helpline. Do you want to talk about it?"
"I found this number on a poster in some bar, I don't… I can't tell anyone else about this. I need to tell someone…"
"You can tell me."
Or; Shane needs someone to confide in about Ilya so he calls a Montreal based LGBT helpline to talk things through anonymously. And then he keeps calling, through every anxious thought and major milestone, someone else is on the other end of the line listening and advising.

“Capitaine!” J.J.’s booming voice greeted him as if he was on speaker. It had been over two seasons since Shane signed with Ottawa, but J.J. insisted on calling him Capitaine still.
“Hi J.J., what’s up?”
“What’s up with you, hat trick against Toronto yesterday! Crisse, what are they feeding you in Ottawa?”Even when on different teams, the “J.J. always calls and never texts” rule still applies.

The display lights up blue with a simple first name: Lily. Shane pulls over without thinking, smacking ineffectually at the dashboard for his hazards as he scrambles to answer the phone before the chance slips through his fingers.
Once he manages to hit the answer button, he calls out, “Um, hi?” into the staticky silence.
A beat later, Ilya replies, “Hello.” Shane can hear the impish smile on his face as he tugs out the vowels, from the sneaky quirk of his brow to the teeth chasing his full bottom lip. “I am coming to your cottage. Will be on the next flight to Montreal.”
“What?” Shane asks.

“You play Boston soon, right? You excited?”
“Y-yeah?” Shane stutters. “It’s always nice to play Boston, I guess. Rivals and all, y’know.”
Crosby nods. “Just be careful.”
Shane blinks, confused. “Of what?”
“I see the way he looks at you.”
“Who?”
“Rozanov.”
Shane stares, and Crosby stares back, unwavering.
“I don’t—”
“And I see the way you look at him, when you think no one is looking.”

He's in his bed in Montreal, tangled in sheets that are damp with sweat, his heart hammering so hard it hurts. The room is dark and quiet and wrong, because Ilya isn't here, Ilya is in Ottawa, two hours away, and Shane's hands are shaking as he grabs for his phone on the nightstand. His fingers fumble with the screen. It's 3:17 AM. He should... he shouldn't do this. Ilya has practice tomorrow. Today. In the morning. Shane knows this because they'd texted about it yesterday, before the Bears-Centaurs game, before Ilya had taken that nasty check in the second period that Shane had watched on his laptop with his stomach in knots, before Shane had gone to bed alone like he does most nights, before his subconscious decided to torture him with the worst thing it could conjure. He stares at Ilya's contact. The photo is from months ago, Ilya grinning at something off- camera, eyes bright, so impossibly alive that Shane's throat closes up. He needs to hear his voice. Just. Just to know he's okay. Just for a second. When Shane has a nightmare about Ilya getting injured, he phones his boyfriend. Ilya returns the call, and so much more.

“Hey Siri, call Lily.” After a pause, “Hey Siri, put it on speaker,” was the next slurred command to come from the concussed hockey star. All Andrea could do was watch in a state of both fascination and horror as the call was picked up after two rings. “Shane? Are you okay?” “Ilyyaaa! It’s your voice! How did they do that?” Shane looked at the device in awe. Ilya’s confusion and genuine concern was audible. “What? Shane, what do you mean?” “Ah!” Shane exclaimed, giggling into his hands. “Hi!” He looked up, then in a stage whisper, he said, “my nurse is still here. So be quiiiiiiiet.” ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________ Or, Shane gets ahold of his phone and calls Ilya while under the influence of his pain meds. And of course, he calls Ilya.

His phone reads 12:05am when the call comes through. Lily appearing on his screen. Smiling, Shane swipes to answer the video request, something in his chest settling when Ilya’s face appears. “I thought you were busy partying.” Ilya wrinkles his nose, adjusting the phone so the light from whichever darkened corner he’s found illuminates his face, “Doesn’t mean I would not call. Happy New Year.” “Happy New Year.” Shane echoes, shimmying down into his pile of pillows.

why did you invite me to your wedding by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-28
“Why are you calling me, Hollander?” Ilya asks more harshly than he means to. But he’s tired, and impatient, and strung out on a mixture of emotions and longing for the voice on the other end of the phone. “If nothing is wrong, why are you calling?”
“Will you come?” Shane asks, and Ilya’s heart sinks before he can even say the rest of it. He shouldn’t have asked. He should have just let Shane ramble. “To…to the wedding?”
The lump in his throat feels insurmountable. But he manages to say, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Shane doesn’t acknowledge it. “I invited alllll these people, but the only one I actually care if they come or not is you.” He stops and giggles. “Isn’t that weird?”
“Yes,” Ilya replies, because it is. You shouldn’t want your years-long situationship at your wedding. He doesn’t want the drunken musings of Shane Hollander to give him hope.
_________
Or Shane gets engaged. Ilya gets a phone call. Everything breaks. But sometimes breaking is what finally makes room for the truth.

“I wanted to apologize for what I said last week.” Oh. This was certainly uncharted territory. “You really don’t have to–” “I really do.” Hunter interrupted him firmly. Shane didn’t know how to respond to the conviction in Hunter’s voice or to the entire subject matter of this call, so he kept his mouth shut. “It wasn’t appropriate of me to insinuate anything about your life outside of the rink.” He continues after a short beat. “If there’s anything going on I promise I’m not against it. Especially since–” — — — or: after the fight between Scott Hunter and Shane Hollander, Scott gives Shane a call and things are revealed.
