  1. "You are doing this on purpose," Ilya accused. Shane looked up, perfectly innocent. "Doing what on purpose?" "The—" Ilya gestured. "This. The—the organizing." "The organizing that I do. Every Thursday. Like I have for the entire time we've been together." "You know what you're doing." Shane's lips twitched. Just barely. But Ilya saw it. "I'm folding a hoodie." 2. “Hey Siri, call Lily.” After a pause, “Hey Siri, put it on speaker,” was the next slurred command to come from the concussed hockey star. All Andrea could do was watch in a state of both fascination and horror as the call was picked up after two rings. “Shane? Are you okay?” “Ilyyaaa! It’s your voice! How did they do that?” Shane looked at the device in awe. Ilya’s confusion and genuine concern was audible. “What? Shane, what do you mean?” “Ah!” Shane exclaimed, giggling into his hands. “Hi!” He looked up, then in a stage whisper, he said, “my nurse is still here. So be quiiiiiiiet.” ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________ Or, Shane gets ahold of his phone and calls Ilya while under the influence of his pain meds. And of course, he calls Ilya.

  4. The hot mic incident was just the beginning. Now the internet watches in real-time as Ilya’s Spotify playlist gets leaked (with NOTES), Shane attempts subtlety (narrator: he fails), they bicker about boy bands on late night TV, someone admits to having a ring for six months ON TWITTER, and approximately 20 different social media platforms collectively lose their goddamn minds. Featuring: journalists having breakdowns, Reddit threads that require moderator intervention, TikTok compilations with 1.2M views, brand partnerships from Skittles, a plague of engagement speculation, and two hockey players who cannot stop being chaotic disasters on main. The fandom was writing fic about them. Turns out reality is messier, queerer, and somehow MORE unhinged. [or social media reacts to the week following the Hot Mic Incident™, told entirely through tweets, Reddit posts, Instagram stories, podcast transcripts, and the world’s most romantic Spotify playlist]

  7. Shane has many routines. He has never hidden the fact that he treats his body like a temple; he's often seen sipping a green vitamin drink or practicing yoga. But his skin care routine is Ilya's favorite. Ilya finds it fascinating when his husband puts on a headband and applies countless creams. One day, inspired, Ilya decides to buy more headbands as a gift for Shane, and a new ritual is born: their couple's skin care routine. "You've turned me into a bore, Shane Hollander-Rozanov," he joked. "You love being boring, Ilya Hollander-Rozanov," Shane countered. "Wrong, I love you. Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.” Ilya said quietly in Russian. As if it were something only Shane could hear. Ilya had few certainties in life, but this was one of them. He wouldn't live without Shane. After all, Shane is your heart, and you can't live without one. “Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.”, with a heavy accent, Shane repeated what Ilya had said. Word for word engraved in his heart.

"Five years ago Shane had brought up the idea of starting a family. They’d been married for a year at that point and it was a discussion that had previously included phrases such as: “Maybe we could-” “Someday, if we decide to-” “I don’t know, but if we did-” They’d talked about hypothetical children. Hypothetical arrangements they could make for when they needed childcare for a game or practice. How many, hypothetically, did they want? In theory, what kind of parents did they want to be? What would discipline look like? Would they try to get them into hockey? What if they didn’t like hockey?" --- Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov have been fathers for four-almost five years now. Every year the NHL posts a promotional 'Fathers' Day' video of famous players and their kids. Yuna finds out they've never been invited, and that simply will not do.

  9. Shane Hollander is going to murder his agent. And he means that literally. Because his agent is the reason he’s currently wearing a hot mic during Hockey Night in Canada. Against the Ottawa Centaurs. Against Ilya. Ilya, who has no filter. Ilya, who thinks workplace professionalism is a hilarious suggestion for other people. Ilya, who has spent a decade perfecting the art of saying absolutely unhinged things to Shane on the ice, safe in the knowledge that nobody can hear him. Ilya, who definitely doesn’t know about the microphone. What follows is sixty minutes of Shane’s life flashing before his eyes while his secret boyfriend enthusiastically discusses their sex life, their broken furniture, and exactly what he wants to do to Shane after the game — all broadcast to millions of viewers. The problem? Shane can’t get a word in edgewise to warn him.

"Hockey rivalries make the game fun - for the players and for the fans. Nothing got your blood pumping like a good ole fashioned face off. It’s about more than just winning. It’s about honor. It’s about team loyalty. It’s about getting to shove your win in their face and blow raspberries like you’re five years old again. The darker side of rivalries involve unchecked reckless aggression. It ends in blood being spilt. Bones being broken. Players hauled off the rink into an ambulance. These are the sobering moments that make you snap out of it. It’s just a game. The fun is over. Someone’s hurt. " -- Shane's move to Ottawa unexpectedly causes a new rivalry to pop off and take over the NHL. He's been involved with rivalries his entire career, but this one might just take the cake.

Clips of Ilya Rozanov and his shenanigans have always been popular amongst online hockey fans. Over time though, the most popular ones include Shane Hollander and their antics on the ice. The two just have a natural chemistry that was endearing to watch - and the videos only grow more popular after the two come out. This leads Shane to ask two simple questions: why the hell is 'House Tour' always blasting from Ilya's phone and why does every video feature his fucking back arch? --- I keep getting funny hockey clips popping up in my feed. So naturally my next thought was: what if this was Hollanov?

  15. Ilya Rozanov has three problems: 1) he’s an NHL superstar 2) he’s hopelessly in love with his supposed rival, and 3) apparently writing fanfiction about it has cursed him with biblically proportionate bad luck.

Ilya Rozanov is not a reasonable person.

  17. Shane Hollander accidentally becomes the internet’s favorite “work wife.” Ilya Rozanov thinks this is the funniest thing that has ever happened and commits to the bit with horrifying sincerity. It started at the press conference in Tampa. Shane Hollander sat ramrod straight at the long table, hands clasped in front of him, the living embodiment of Canadian restraint drilled into his bones since minor hockey. He answered questions about Montreal’s power play the way a man answers a fire drill: calmly, correctly, and without a flicker of surprise. Every response sounded memorized, a careful blend of polite deflection and measured praise for his teammates, calibrated to say nothing memorable unless it involved a goal or a fight. He was excellent at it, so professionally dull it bordered on art. Three seats down, Ilya Rozanov was putting on an entirely different show. Fresh off a hat trick that had buried Montreal yet again, Ilya lounged in his chair like the building had been constructed around him. His tie was already loosened, his top button undone, because rules were for people who needed them. One arm draped along the back of the empty chair beside him, he dissected his own brilliance in that lazy drawl that made reporters lean closer and fans either swoon or grind their teeth. When the inevitable question about their rivalry landed, because it always did and always would, Ilya’s gaze slid sideways for a fraction of a second, just long enough for Shane to feel it land low in his gut like a body check he had not braced for and absolutely should have seen coming. “Rozanov, you and Hollander seem to find each other all over the ice every time you play. Is that something you actively look for, or is it just instinct at this point?” “Of course,” Ilya said, his accent thickening as he took his time with it. “I always know exactly where Hollander is on the ice. Is like…” He paused, tilting his head as if searching for the right English word, though Shane knew damn well it was already chambered. “Is like built-in radar.” A couple of reporters chuckled. Someone from TSN, a voice Shane recognized even while refusing to look up, leaned into it with the grin of a man who thought he was about to strike gold. “You two have been going at each other for years now. That’s quite the partnership you’ve got, alongside one hell of a rivalry.” Ilya tasted the word partnership before answering, eyes flicking to Shane again. Then he turned back to the room, savoring it like good vodka. “Partnership,” he repeated, letting the r stretch. “Yes. Good word. We understand each other very well.” He leaned forward, elbows on the table now, his voice dropping into that conspiratorial register that made everyone listen closer than they meant to. “Sometimes I think Shane knows what I’m going to do before I even decide. Is very… intimate, the way he reads me.” Laughter rolled through the room, easy and appreciative, the sound people make when they think they’re sharing a harmless joke about hockey jargon. Shane felt his face heat instantly and was grateful for the bright lights masking it. He reached for his water bottle on instinct and took a swallow, which turned into a mistake the moment Ilya added, almost casually, “He always knows exactly where I should put my stick.” Shane choked hard enough that the moderator glanced over in concern. He waved a hand, coughing and thumping his chest as if he could knock the humiliation loose, eyes watering as he fought for air. A few reporters shot him sympathetic looks, and someone asked if he was alright. Ilya, the absolute bastard, did not bother pretending to care. He sat there with that faint, infuriating smirk curling at the corner of his mouth, eyes half-lidded and gleaming like he was replaying every filthy thing Shane had whispered to him in a hotel room two nights earlier. “Wrong pipe,” Shane managed eventually. He took a second, more careful sip, kept his gaze firmly forward, and silently begged the floor to open up and end him before the next question landed. The next morning, The Athletic ran the headline: “Work Spouses: How Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s Rivalry Became the MLH’s Most Intense Partnership.” By the time Shane was half dressed, brushing his teeth and doomscrolling in front of the hotel mirror, the internet had already done what it always did. Twitter had stripped the phrase down to its most inflammatory core and decided he was now a “work wife.” Shane stared at the screen, toothpaste foaming at the corners of his mouth, then stared at it again as if the words might rearrange themselves out of basic decency. “What the actual fuck,” he told his reflection, voice muffled around the toothbrush. It did not get better. When he reached the Amalie Arena and filtered into the Metros’ locker room for pregame, the familiar smell of tape and sweat did nothing to settle his nerves. He had barely dropped his bag when his phone buzzed in his pocket. Lily: hello wife

  20. “You wrote about us having sex while Hayden watches!”

“Fictional us,” Ilya corrects. “Real us would never do that. Probably.” He pauses. “Unless …”

    “No!”

Ilya Rozanov has always been competitive. But when his husband’s best friend starts calling a little too often, Ilya discovers a new arena for dominance: Archive of Our Own.

Armed with a pseudonym that fools absolutely no one, explicit tags that would make a sailor blush, and a truly impressive commitment to pettiness, Ilya wages psychological warfare one kudos at a time. His weapon of choice? Extremely detailed fanfiction about why Hayden Pike will never, ever measure up.

    The problem? Hayden writes back.

What follows is the most unhinged rivalry in hockey history: a battle fought not with fists or slapshots, but with comment sections, kudos, and increasingly creative ways to humiliate each other in front of thousands of readers. Featuring: footnoted statistics, educational sex advice, one very concerned wife, and Shane Hollander wondering what the hell he did to deserve this.
