But it’s still enough to make Ilya want to abandon all of this and drag Shane back upstairs. “Behave, Ilya,” he says, slipping back into Russian. “You know they can't know.” He turns. The look he throws him is a little too close not to affect him. “We both want it that way.”

In Episode 2 of Heated Rivalry (2025) during the 2011 All-Star Game, Scott Hunter overhears Ilya Rozanov whisper “1221” to Shane Hollander when Ilya thinks he’s being so subtle no one would notice. In 2014 after Shane attempts Baby’s First Insult, Scott hits him where it hurts by suggesting he knows something.
But these geniuses were never really subtle. They weren’t subtle before that All-Star Game and they weren’t subtle after it. The show didn’t have time to show it, but Scott saw them being dumb and obvious way more than that one scene implied. Here are the deleted scenes.

A statement released in July, 2022 on the official Centaurs social media channels: "In October of last year, Shane and Ilya became temporary foster parents to one of the students that had participated in the Irina Foundation's hockey camps after he was abandoned by his birth parents for coming out as queer. Since then they have pursued first permanent foster placement and adoption. That adoption was granted and finalized this month. Mac Hollander -Rozanov has been in many pictures that, with his permission, are being re- edited and re-uploaded to remove the emojis that were used to protect his identity in accordance with the government's guidelines." An additional paragraph added to a photo Ilya and Shane shared to their personal Instagrams: "Family looks different for everyone, and our family is no different. Mac is our son, and we are so incredibly proud of him and his achievements. We hope that the hockey community will be as respectful of him as they are of other children of players."

Under the leather coat Ilya had shrugged off and above his missing shoe was a familiar glass plaque, familiar because he had the same trophy at home in his trophy room, First Draft Pick for the NHL. Shane felt stomach acid churning in his gut and something close to panic seemed to claw up his insides.
“Tell me you’re not Ilya Rozanov.” Shane demanded. “Tell me I didn’t fuck a rookie.”
Not just any rookie, but the rookie Shane had avoided looking at, thinking about, or researching for the sole reason that they called him "Hollander Come Again.” Shane hadn’t even left the ice yet and they were already trying to replace him with a younger model, apparently an unparalleled talent from Russia whose scores in the Juniors had kissed Shane’s records in a way that a rookie hadn’t in the almost decade since Shane set them. He was going to be sick.
“You did not fuck rookie, rookie fucked you.” Ilya Rozanov said and Shane moaned, this time in a growing despair because not only was his replacement maybe better than him, he was also a fucking asshole about it too.
