Shane doesn’t realize he’s braced for silent eyes until he feels the absence of it — the weight of teammates immediately finding him and going quiet, waiting for him to fuck up, to say the wrong thing, to exist wrong. He expects the chatter of a room to drop when he enters and its disconcerting to find it doesn't yet in Ottawa.
He stands at the entrance a beat too long.
--
It’s the start of Shane Hollander’s first season in Ottawa and he should be settled. The Centaurs are friendly, the room is easy, and Ilya is finally close enough to touch. But, as Shane is intimately aware of, old habits learned the hard way will linger.

“I did something stupid,” Shane confesses, inhaling rapidly. He's still crying, still frozen in the doorway, besides his hitching chest and watering eyes. Hayden's never seen him like this, overtaken with emotion, bitter exhaustion in his voice. He makes a soft choked noise, and Hayden immediately wants to kill something, whatever it is that's making him feel so awful. “I—Hayds—you're gonna hate me—”
“No,” Hayden says before he can even finish the thought, almost hurt by the accusation. “No way. You're—I wouldn't. I won't.”
Shane sniffs, offering him a sad smile, his eyes watery and solemn. It's an unfamiliar look, burnt through with sorrow and twisting doubt, sharp worry in the furrow of his brow. “You are,” he says, soft and certain. “I do, and I'm the one who's doing it.”
OR: Shane returns to the hotel room, post-tuna melt. Hayden spirals.

Ilya knows what he is. He has always known what he is. The word for it in Russian tastes like something you'd scrape off a boot. The word in English is bisexual, which is a nicer word, which he has heard, which he does not use. He uses other words. He uses the word his brother taught him. He uses it on himself before anyone else can. He grows up. He gets good at hockey. He moves to America. He... falls in love. (Or, five times people fail to notice Ilya being queer, and one time they have no choice.)

Fans and internet passerby alike would agree that this… interaction was not a fight. A fight required the participation of two or more partners. At that moment, Ilya was the only one on the ice. The world fell away at the sight of Shane’s stumble, pulsing gently in and out of frame before cutting out completely and giving way to pure static. His blood turned carbonated, noxious gases inside him that rose and burst him open. At that moment, he and everyone else, including Burt, knew he intended to kill.
Or, Montreal's newest player makes the mistake of fucking with Ilya Rozanov's Husband.

The Destruction of Montreal by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

“Ilya, you’re playing the Voyageurs next, in Montreal. How are you feeling about that?” An ESPN mic is held to his face.
Rozanov grins. “Really good. About time. I know we have been winning a lot, but is always the most fun to beat Montreal.”
“The situation’s kind of changed though, hasn’t it?”
“Is true.” Rozanov looks almost thoughtful. “It used to be the most fun to beat them because they had the best player on their team. Now…” Rozanov trails off. He chances a look to the side, as if to check if someone’s there or not. “Now is going to be fun because they are very stupid.” Rozanov’s face is very hard. Serious. Angry. Scary.
Or: Signing with the Montreal Voyageurs should have been the best day in Jordan Bicker’s career. If only it weren’t for Ilya Rozanov…

Ilya Rozanov. One of the star players of the NHL, nearly a decade into his career. Center for the Boston Bears, a brutal, fast player known for womanizers tendencies and his bragging habits.
Kip had learned a lot about hockey in the last three years, unable to swipe past anything to do with Scott’s career. Ilya Rozanov was a difficult player to mistake and it was his distinctive build that stood beside him now, glaring down at the buildings as if they’d personally offended him.
“...Hi.” Kip had to give himself credit. Even with the hesitation, the greeting was clear and strong, pushed past the tightness of his shirt on his shoulders, his collar resting against his throat.
“Hello,” said Rozanov, shifting to cross his arms and lean them against the railing. His suit was near to the navy blue Kip was wearing– a popular color, and he was doubly glad Scott had insisted on it. “Is nice out here. Cold.”
Three times that Ilya supported Scott's relationship and one time he defended his own.

Scott's been the subject of a lot of rude comments, on and off the ice. One of the things he'd braced himself for. One thing he hadn't expected was to hear that people who made those comments while playing Ottawa tended to get punched by one Ilya Rozanov.

Ilya feels like he knows everything and nothing about Shane at once. He's a child of Nike, his team always wins Capture-the-flag, he's still in touch with his biological father, and he's obscenely lucky. What he doesn't know, is if Shane is the best or the worst person to quest with. // Aristotle's qualifications for a Greek tragedy include dianoia (thought and introspection) and opsis (spectacle and performance). Shane and Ilya bring both to the table.

Shane Hollander was an incredible hockey player. His shot accuracy was legendary. He was a fantastic strategist and play caller. He, despite Ilya's insistence otherwise, was one of the fastest on the ice. Still, none of that was what made Shane great. What made him great was how he cared. Shane would do anything for his team - including get his hands a little dirty. OR Shane Hollander can be bad, too. Five times Shane's gloves come off on the ice.

For as long as Ilya has remembered, there were five letters neatly printed in the crease of his arm either in vivid black or as a ghost of his memory. He is four when he learns that it is a soulmark. He is six when he realises his parents do not have each other's names. He is eight when he works out the name is probably from the English speaking world. He is ten when he works out it is a boy’s and receives a slap across the face for asking. He is twelve when he buries his hopes with his mother. Fate is what men make for themselves, hopes and opportunities his father states harshly, hand on each son’s shoulder at the funeral but Ilya sees the pill bottle in his dreams as if it is as real as the alcohol on the coffee table and thinks maybe what his father made was graves for more than just his mother. He is fourteen, fresh off international scouts noticing him for the first time, when his father takes him to a clinic with a leaking ceiling and a stone faced doctor who takes a stack of notes and a bottle of vodka, the expensive kind, and lasers the soulmate mark off him as Ilya screams and begs. He carves each letter of Shane’s name into the wooden slat under his bed as tears of pain and frustration blur his vision and he promises himself he will escape. He’s sixteen when he feels the scar at his arm tingle as he watches the Canadian junior team face off against the Americans. Shane. It cannot be. His arm tingles every time Shane has the puck. It does not matter, his father hisses, realising the same moment Ilya does, grabbing his arm and viciously stabbing his still lit cigarette into the scarred flesh. ‘That is done with, Ilya.’. His arm burns but not as harshly as the eyes Ilya cannot pull from the screen. Another burn. Another. Every hit perfectly placed for the letters that no longer show on Ilya’s flesh. He’s seventeen when he meets his soulmate, and he knows it's him, he can feel it, and Shane is so kind but Ilya has been trained to only respond to harsh demands and expectations, informing him there are many Ilyas’ in Russia. Hope blooms and he’s ready to follow, anywhere really, anywhere that isn’t back to where he came from because Shane is where he is supposed to be but he has to check and its heavy, the weight of his father’s victory when Shane says ‘yeah I guess you are right’ and leaves with his handshake and his polite smile and the remains of Ilya’s heart in his hands. He’s twenty seven when Shane tells him he’s pretty sure there are millions of Ilya’s in the world but only one for him, face set and determined as he stands barefoot and ready to fight. One arm is still in a sling and bruises are fading into his face, and to Ilya he has never looked more beautiful. Ilya got used to taking what he could get, ignoring the imprint of his own name on Shane’s foot, aided by Shane’s quirk of keeping his socks on and how shy he is in general, reaching for his clothes before Ilya has come down from the high and retreating back behind the wall only Ilya is allowed to pass. “Mine is gone, my father-” “Your father is dead,” Shane snaps, and then the anger seems to drain out of him as he grabs Ilya’s wrist with his good hand and slowly traces his hand up his arm to the crease of his elbow, touching the scarred flesh, “I’m here.” Simple. Ilya could say a thousand different things and they would be a thousand different people’s words. Shane grows nervous in his silence and takes a step back, a cold horrible feeling spreading in Ilya’s stomach when he does it. He’s blowing it. The moment he hoped for, denied he hoped for, hoped for again, and he’s blowing it. “Ilya…I get it ok? I’m weird and boring and you probably think that I’m no fun and wish it was someone else but-” “No!” Shane was the one who walked away from Ilya. Only so far though, only ever so far, as if they were not just soulmates but linked by a red string of fate carrying across the oceans, between continents, drawing them both to the ice that could unite them. Hockey has been Ilya’s downfall and his salvation, his family in ruins and yet Shane in front of him. It was the excuse for him to be forbidden, it is the very reason he probably should still be forbidden and yet it is fate. There is nothing more natural in the universe than stepping forward and dropping to his knees and pressing his index and middle finger to his own name at Shane’s ankle. “I am sorry. My mark…” “It’s still there Ilya,” Shane murmurs as he awkwardly crouches and returns his hand to its former place, over the marred skin, “It feels…right? Mine is where no one can see it. Yours is…no one would know. But we know, Ilya. We know. Come to the cottage. Give us a chance.” “I did. I said to you,” and he has to pause and regain his composure, the wall that only Shane gets passed on his side, “I tell you, many Ilya’s in Russia. That day. In juniors. I….was waiting.” “I know,” Shane murmurs, “M’sorry. I was scared. But Ilya….m’not afraid anymore.” Ilya cups his chin and feels Shane tremble under his touch, “This is a lie I think.” Shane inhales and then exhales deeply, and Ilya thinks there are many better places for this conversation than kneeling on the floor of the hotel room Ilya should have left days ago but he couldn’t bring himself to leave the city while Shane was still in the hospital. “Okay, I’m terrified,” Shane says flatly, blinking rapidly as he makes himself hold Ilya’s gaze, and no matter how hard it is with people when it matters he always holds Ilya’s gaze, “But I’m not afraid of us anymore, Ilya. Come home.” Home.

There’s Lily, Shane’s Boston girl, but Hayden has no idea her number, where she lives, or what she looks like. She’ll have no way of finding Shane, of being there when he wakes up high and afraid, because he never did well with being out of control. Lily won’t be there. His parents won’t be there. It’s the easiest decision he’s ever made. Hayden skates off the rink, barely pausing as he starts stripping off his gear. Coach surges forward, lips curled up with some order to get back out there, no doubt. He doesn’t give him the chance, “I’m not leaving him. I go where he goes.” And that’s that. - Or, Shane doesn’t wake up so easily and Hayden Pike somehow ends up taking care of Ilya Rozanov. (Jackie does the heavy lifting; he’s just there for the ride and realizations.)

Cliff was only aiming to push the guy off the puck, maybe disrupt his stride long enough to give Rozanov time to catch up, but Hollander wasn’t expecting the hit, and it caught him at an awkward angle, knocking one of his legs out from under him. Cliff watched as he slid uncontrolled, his momentum carrying him into the boards ahead of them at full speed. His shoulder hit first, but then Cliff heard his helmet hit the boards with a deafening crack. For a moment, the arena was deathly silent, as though the whole crowd was holding its breath. Cliff dropped to a crouch above Hollander’s body, still splayed out on the ice. There was blood streaming out of his nose. He wasn’t moving.
