“Okay. You want to say no, you want to fight me. Pretty boy, all alone in his glass house. You want me to force you?” He didn’t need Shane to answer, really; Shane was fully hard against Ilya’s thigh and pink under his freckles. But it was best to be direct about these things. And he wanted to hear Shane say it, anyway. “I—yeah. Make me. Is that too weird?”

  2. The moment Yuna rises from her seat, Ilya knows Shane is going to follow. He is good, his Shane. A good hockey player; a good partner; a good son. A good person. On his best day, Ilya might consider himself to be one of those things. It's purely quantitative; he has the accolades to prove it. But today is far from his best day, so when Shane grabs the grey cashmere sweater draped like a shroud around Yuna's vacated chair and leaves Ilya with David peering blankly at him across the table, he braces for a storm. — Ilya and David's conversation at the dining table.

But when a diagnosis changes it all, he's put into a tailspin that ends with Ilya Rozanov entering his life. ---- An obligatory post-episode 6 autism fic because Shane 100% was shutting down when he put his head down on that table.

  4. “So,” Ilya cleared his throat, the word sounding too loud in the stillness. “Shane tells me you like New Yorker.” Shane’s dad looked at him from where he was rinsing out a glass in the sink, visibly surprised that Ilya had spoken first. “Oh. Yes,” he said after a beat. “I like to read in the mornings. I love the crossword. Do you read The New Yorker too?” “No.” “Oh.” or While Shane is outside with his mother, Ilya finds unexpected understanding and warmth in a quiet kitchen conversation with the man who helped raised the boy he loves.

People made choices all the time that weren’t about winning cups but about living. And Ilya—God, Ilya deserved more than survival disguised as compromise.

"We have been here three nights," Ilya continues, and his heart immediately starts beating faster, just the thought of three nights with Shane Hollander enough to get it running ahead. But no. Ilya tells his heart to stop it, he has a point, he will not let it distract him from his point. "Three nights I wake up and you are awake,” he tells Shane. "You are like bullfrog?" "What?" "You do not need sleep?" Shane has insomnia. Ilya is totally chill about it.

Shane knows omegas are supposed to be good at comforting others. Just like he knows that's definitely not a skill he possesses. But when he hears Ilya's broken I'm sorry he knows he at least has to try, even if he's afraid he'll end up fucking it up. (Now with a second chapter: ✨ cottage sex ✨)

  8. “So, how do you feel about Chicken Parmesan?” Of all the things Ilya could have guessed David Hollander would say, that was not one of them. Maybe “Sorry for accidentally interrupting a beautiful moment with your boyfriend and then immediately leaving. That was probably stressful.” Or the opposite end, “Why do you think you're worthy of my perfect son after publicly whoring around for years?” Both scenarios were unlikely, he knew, but the chicken parmesan really came out of nowhere. Ilya cleared his throat and tried not to fidget with his crucifix. “Is good.” -------------------------------------------------------- Or, the missing convo between Ilya Rozanov and David Hollander

Shane finds Ilya outside the cottage in the middle of the night. Ilya wants to stop being scared of the loons. Shane just wants Ilya. Shane reached across the bed, grumbling when he hit the mattress instead of Ilya’s ass. He blinked sleepily at his watch - 3:24 am - and then at the en suite. Empty. Where is he? Ilya was probably getting water or something. He needed to relax. Shane closed his eyes and counted to 50. Five more rounds of counting and Shane was out of bed, throwing on the Raiders hoodie Ilya tore off hours before. So much for relaxed. “Ilya?” He called out tentatively. The cottage was silent. Shane was on his way to search upstairs when he saw him. Ilya, on the dock, his back to the cottage. Two breaths later and Shane was outside, bracing against the cool wind. “What are you doing?” Even in the dark, without his glasses, Ilya was like a beacon of warmth built just for Shane. Moonlight reflected off his hair, his shoulders. He was stunning. In fuzzy silhouette, Ilya was still aching clarity. “I’m waiting,” Ilya answered, unmoving, eyes still out on the water. When he didn’t elaborate, Shane fought the quip sitting in his throat. It was always so easy to joke and tease, but Shane wanted the earnest Ilya more than anything. It didn’t stop him, though, from feeling like he was flailing for new ground. He hesitated. Despite knowing each other for years, everything was distressingly new. Shane didn’t know the new rules of engagement, and it terrified him that he might do something wrong. Shane resisted the unknown like it was a cross-ice puck pass through traffic. In a tied playoff game. But this was Ilya, and Shane couldn't fight the itch of his feet begging to walk towards him if he tried. And God knows he’d fucking tried. Shane grabbed a blanket from the deck and walked down the short trail to the dock. Ilya finally turned to look at him, smiling softly as he helped Shane wrap the quilt around them both. Their shoulders brushed against each other, and it felt like being held and struck by lightning all at once. Whatever anxiousness had crept into Shane's chest vanished. Fuck, I’m a goner. How did I ever think I was straight? “Sorry if I woke you.” Shane shook his head. “It’s okay. I mean, you didn’t. Are…are you okay?” A loon called in the distance, and Ilya jumped practically ten feet in the air. “Shit.” He sighed. “Fucking loon. So fucking loud. And ugly. Fucking ugly evil duck.” “You saw one?” “I googled it.” Tension radiated from Ilya, and Shane didn’t know what to make of it. Ilya was so rarely still. He was always moving, fidgeting with something. But right now, Ilya wasn’t just still, he was… frozen. Ilya even seemed to breathe in a way that moved his body as little as possible. It was unnerving. Another loon called, and Ilya sucked in a breath. He let it back out slowly. “Was better,” he whispered. Something desperate twisted in Shane’s stomach. “Ilya.” “Cottage is nice. Being at the cottage with you is nice.” Shane nodded slowly. Did Ilya regret coming? Did he want to leave? Ilya snaked an arm around Shane’s waist and pulled him in, dropping a kiss on his shoulder. His lips were so cold, but Shane didn’t mind. He’s always felt at home on the ice. “I want to come back. Some time. If you want me to.” “I want you to.” “Loons make nests in summer. On lakes.” He shrugged. “Not sure how you make nest on a lake.” “You looked that up?” “Yes.” “Why?” “We will be here together, in the summers, yes?” “Probably.” “The evil wolf ducks will be here, too.” As if they were listening, a particularly close loon chirped on their left. Shane thought it was still easily 10 meters or more away, but Ilya pulled back like he was under attack. It was startling to see Ilya so scared. Shane hated it. Ilya rolled his shoulders and breathed deeply, like he was trying to calm himself. Suddenly, realization dawned on Shane so hard he nearly doubled over. Ilya wasn’t pulling away. Ilya was here, at Shane’s cottage, leaning into Shane’s side and rubbing a thumb along his hip. Ilya was letting him see that something was wrong, and Shane knew the kind of gift this trust was. Fuck him if he took it for granted. “Sit down.” “What?”

You do that for as long as you can…as long as they will allow you. And then you let them go. You send them out into the world, and hope with everything in you that it doesn’t break them.

  19. When Ilya gets injured while swimming in the lake, Shane scrambles to save him from drowning. ("We all get our bell rung, eventually." -Shane Hollander) It was a less than perfect day at the lake. A gray day—little sun. But Shane Hollander was overflowing with light. He felt it on his cheeks, all over his skin, in his bones. He couldn’t stop smiling with it. The cottage itself seemed to glow with a living aura. The night before he was looking into his longtime lover’s eyes when he said—twice in Russian, and then once in English—“I love you.” Shane said it back. And his world shifted like tectonic plates. No day would ever truly be gray again. Ilya Rozanov stood on top of the large, slanted rock on which Shane sat. “Don’t dive into the water, you idiot. It’s shallow here—up to your waist.” Ilya ruffled Shane’s slate-black hair. “I do little jump,” Rozanov said. “Barely dive. Closer to —what do you say—eh, belly flop.” Shane rolled his eyes as he carefully rearranged his hair. “You’re going to belly flop into cold water with bruised ribs?” Ilya winced and wrinkled his nose at the thought. “You dive in there and you’re going to sprain your wrists on the bottom before your feet hit the water,” Hollander warned. “Fine!” Ilya made a show of putting his hands behind his back by stretching his long arms up and around. He clasped his own fingers together and stared down at Hollander. “No arms. Half belly flap, half dive. Yes? Approved?” The fondness for Ilya that glowed in Shane’s heart warmed. “Fine!” he said, pronouncing the word with a Russian accent, speaking it the same way Ilya had a moment ago. “But there’s a downed tree down there so aim to the—” Ilya rotated to the right and dove nose-first over Shane’s knees. “—left.” Shane gulped. Ilya disappeared into the water—all six feet of him—and Shane sighed. He looked around, taking a moment to ingest the view. The hockey captain took in the trees, the horizon on the water, the sky. All beautiful, he concluded. But not as beautiful as Ilya Rozanov’s body in those swimming trunks. That was his favorite view of all. Shane looked down at the spot in the water where Ilya had disappeared, and curled his hands into fists when he realized that a whole half minute had passed. How long could his lover hold his breath? Shane didn’t know. “Rozanov?” he called to the silent lake. “Ilya!” The clouds shifted then. Shane concluded that an entire minute had passed. Sunlight through the trees illuminated the colors of the water—blue, black, teal, green... And red. “FUCK,” Shane gasped at the sight of the blood. He eased himself into the water and started swimming as fast as he could. His leg bumped something solid. Shane took a deep breath and dropped underwater, eyes open. Arms paddling, fingers reaching, mostly blind, Shane felt around for the solid object. Fingers found the underwater tree, first, but then he found something hard that felt like skin, and he pulled. Shane summoned all of his strength and swam for the surface. He emerged gasping, holding the limp, unmoving body in a bridal carry. Rozanov’s head lolled against Shane’s bicep— eyes shut, mouth open. “Ilya!” Hollander shouted at him. “ILYA!” When not even an eyelid flinched, he swore again and stomped toward the shore. Shane had never heard his own heart beating. But it was thundering in his ears when he gently laid Ilya’s waterlogged body down on the grass. Rozanov’s skin was corpse-colored except for the massive gash at his hairline that was leaking blood. “Dammit!” Shane shouted, voice cracking, when water leaked from Rozanov’s blue-tinted lips. He rolled him onto his side and watched several cups of water stream from his mouth. Then Shane knelt, pressed his ear to Ilya’s lips, and both listened and felt for his breathing. Nothing. No inhale. No exhale. Tears erupted from Shane’s dark eyes. He pressed two fingers against the pulse point on Ilya’s throat. He found it. Ilya had a pulse. But Shane was certain his heart was beating too slow—the sensation shallow under the white skin. Shane’s eyes were so soaked with tears that everything went funhouse mirror blurry. He rolled Ilya onto his back, squeezed his nostrils shut, and blew air into his lungs. Again. Again and again and again. Over and over he breathed breath into his lover. In the distance, a loon called—mocking, almost. “Please,” Shane said against Ilya’s lips. “Wake up, you asshole! Please!” Shane pulled back and looked down at Ilya’s slack face. “Ilya,” he begged. “ILYA!” Then, with all his strength, Shane pushed down on Ilya’s stomach. Water, vomit, and who knew what else erupted from Ilya’s stomach and chest. A cough followed it—then another. After three more, Ilya’s eyes burst open and he went into a coughing fit that Shane had no doubt killed his already bruised ribs. Shane lifted Ilya’s body, then. Lifted him up into his arms so that he was almost sitting. Shane held him while he coughed—didn’t care about the blood slowly soaking his swimming trunks or the vomit under his knees. Ilya’s wide eyes found Shane’s and refused to look away. Shane whispered into Ilya’s ear, “I’m here, I’ve got you, just breathe, you’re ok—you’re ok—you’re ok.” The blood flow didn’t stop, but the coughing eventually did. “Shane,” Ilya wheezed. “S- Sorry…” “Shhh,” Hollander soothed. “You hit your head. You’re bleeding bad. I have to get you to the hospital—can you stand?”

  20. "So, silent retreat buddy?" He genuinely asks. Shane was being a really bad friend. Hayden spent weeks around babies and he probably needed a bit of a normal adult conversation but the only adult thought coming to Shane's mind right now was 'my dick is in Ilya's mouth'. "Yeah. You know. Doing yoga. Bonfires and stuff," he let out an involuntary moan and clapps his hand across his mouth while Ilya doubles his efforts. Hayden chuckles on the other line. "You sure about that? You don't have any company?" "May... Maybe." "Oh. Oooohhhh bud, sorry. I'm hanging up. Say hi to Lilly for me." But, before Hayden could drop the line Shane says back: "He says hi back." "Wait. He?" *** Or: Hayden finds out about Ilya and Shane in an unsuspected way. Inspired by 'that' phone call scene in ep6 😏
