  2. Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.

In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.

But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

Shane Hollander learns Russian in secret, eventually it’s not a secret anymore. Shane Hollander was anything but a slacker. He took everything in his life seriously. He woke up at 5am for his morning run, then he’d spend half an hour in his home gym before showering, eating a well balanced breakfast, and heading to the rink for whatever the team had planned that day. He took his routine seriously, and in turn, everything else seemed to fall into place. He was fast, on his feet and on the ice. He was strong, to the point where he could effortlessly pin some of the biggest guys in the league to the boards and slip the puck off their stick and onto his own. He even managed to finish his daily sudoku in about 5 minutes every day. He took to French like a fish took to water, that’s why he was so frustrated when he first started picking up phrases in Russian. He couldn’t manage to wrap his mind around the language at first, couldn’t make his mouth move correctly to get it just right. He spent hours staring at himself in the mirror trying to find the right way to move his mouth for different words, recording his own attempts and comparing it to the audio guide on the app he’d downloaded. He’s not sure why he started learning Russian, maybe it was to get an edge over Rozanov, to know what he would mutter on the ice, or whisper against his neck as he pushed inside of him. Or maybe it was because he had two teammates who spoke Russian and he was the captain, he couldn’t have his teammates feeling ostracized, could he? (They had little to nothing to do with his decision, but he refuses to acknowledge that). He had come a far way from where he was the first year, where he used to stumble and trip over the pronunciations, he now glided through them perfectly, at least that’s what the teacher he had hired around year 2 said. He felt confident he could carry conversations now, banter back and forth with his friends. He doesn’t know for sure, because the only person on the planet that knows about his Russian hobby is his teacher, Tonya. They had just finished their session for this week, he always felt strange after a session, a weird ball of guilt and shame welling up in the pit of his stomach he didn’t fully understand. It might have something to do with the Russian currently texting him, but he tried to block that out. Lily: Are your legs still shaking from last time? You skate like baby deer tonight. He rolled his eyes before typing his response Jane: Fuck yourself, I was skating fine. He was, it wasn’t his best night, and it pains him to admit it, but he’ll play better on Friday and that’s all that matters. He still scored a goal and got an assist. Lily: You will be shaking again in a week, yes? ;) Jane: Someone’s full of themselves. And he knew the second he sent it, he had walked right into a trap, he expected the response before he got it Lily: You can be full of me too. Shane turned his phone off and felt the flush creep up his cheeks. He should be used to the comments by now, but he’s not. And it’s only gotten worse since he’s started learning the others native tongue. All the whispered comments he makes, the words grazing his skin as he takes him apart. Sometimes he feels guilty for not telling him he knows what he’s saying, and then Rozanov calls him beautiful again and his brain shuts off. Before he’d thought whatever he was saying would be dirty, so filthy that Shane wouldn’t even want to know, and there are plenty of dirty things that have tumbled out in Russian, but mostly it’s soft praise ‘you’re so gorgeous’, ‘your little noises are beautiful’, ‘my pretty boy’. It might be one of the reasons he still refuses to tell him he knows, because what if he stops saying them? He puts all his things back where they belong, his Russian language book goes back in the bottom drawer, stuffed under two hockey biographies he knows nobody will care to read if they end up snooping, and his notebook filled with phrases, tips and notes gets put back in a bag that sits on the floor beside his desk, filled with random papers and forms. As he walks around his house that evening he’s practicing what they had went over in his lesson, wrapping his tongue around the words until they feel perfect before moving on to the next. Maybe he’ll finally work up the courage to tell his Russian teammates soon, then they could talk to him without trying to grasp the correct words after a particularly hard game, or a gruelling workout. Probably not, but it would be nice. ==== He was making an early lunch for himself before an afternoon practice when he stubbed his toe on the island, it happened without him even noticing at first. He had been going over some of his notes, and was practicing a few phrases he had heard in a post game interview with a Russian goalie on Washington’s team. So it wasn’t that surprising when he muttered a quiet “fuck” in Russian. He was actually a little proud, curse words had been one of the first things he learned, before he fully committed to his secret lessons, he would listen to certain words Rozanov would say, wether it was a whispered praise just for Shane’s ears, or a frustrated exclamation during a game, he would file it away and repeat it in his head until he got somewhere he could search it up. Rozanov’s favourite seemed to be “fuck”. Which Shane understood, it sounded rough, and aggressive, it felt dull in his mouth whenever he had practiced, different to English cursing. Not to mention it worked for most settings the Russian would curse in. Shane hadn’t thought twice about his slip up, just rubbed his foot and went on about fishing up his rice and chicken before heading out for practice. Nobody was around to hear him, it was nothing.

  6. There are footsteps outside, a nurse probably, so Ilya readies himself for goodbye. It’s too soon. Too soon. How am I meant to leave him here? Bruised, without wrapping him up in that navy weighted blanket he likes. Without feeding him his stupid, regimented rabbit diet and his ginger ale? Without teasing him about his neatness habits and about the singular pass he missed in that game we played against each other years ago? Without kissing him all over–his cheeks, his lips, his eyelids, across his chest, and the curve of his spine. His scapula, where his wings must be hiding. Angel Hollander. Boring Hollander. Beautiful Hollander. That’s all he is, beautiful. Ilya’s chest feels full to bursting. If his heart were a machine, it would destroy him, and then the world, with love. OR, Shane gets hurt on the ice. Ilya does not take it well. He thinks, and thinks, and thinks.

  7. “I’m fine,” he dismisses lightheartedly, almost chuckling at how Ilya’s whole body seems to decompress at the information. A small smile appears on his lips. He reasons. Fractured collarbone, concussed, arm in a sling. Out for the playoffs. Him being obliged to stay at home, resting and recovering, while his team could continue playing for the rest of the season without him — he knows the minute the feeling of the meds would wear off, the thought alone would have been enough to send him into psychosis. He considers his options. His throbbing head doesn’t really help. He then supposes he could have a little fun of his own. “Heh,” Shane giggles before even managing to blurt anything else out. “My boyfriend is here.” — (Or: dopey Shane has the time of his life wooing a very worried Ilya.)

  10. Shane is a reporter for The New Yorker. Ilya works as a political consultant at the Russian Consulate. They’ve known each other since being rivals on the hockey team in college. It took a while for them to become friends, but since they have, the pair have gotten close. Very close. 12. “It’s not something we’ve discussed too much,” Shane admits reluctantly. “I mean, I think we talked about it once or twice, after being around Hayden’s kids. But…I was afraid…I don’t know if you want…” His sentence falters and he presses a hand to his stomach, inhaling slowly like he’s trying to soothe more nausea. It takes Ilya’s brain a few moments to process, to catch up, to piece together this half-filled puzzle Shane’s laying out for him. “We talked about having babies,” Ilya supplies, arching an eyebrow, “are you trying to say we are…having a baby?” Shane sucks in another slow, controlled breath. “Um, yeah. That’s what I’m trying to say.” “You are pregnant?” Wincing, the shorter man nods. “Mhm.” -or, vignettes of shane's unexpected pregnancy-

  13. “It looks worse than it is, really,” Shane murmured as he reached for the strings of his robe. As he untied them, he met Ilya’s gaze. It burned a trail over Shane’s hands, his legs, his neck. He was dying of thirst, and Shane was the oasis for which he had been desperately searching. — Or, Ilya gets concerned when Shane shows him a hockey injury, Shane is anxious, and Ilya gives some fire head.

  14. Ilya couldn’t help it, gently collecting the small girl into his arms as she easily wrapped her arms around his neck. She was so light, lighter than she should be for a five year old, and yet the burden she carried had nearly weighed her down just as easily. Ilya swears he'd carve out a future where she would never shy away from the sunshine, where she would never question or second guess whether she deserves the calm, the warmth, the love that she receives. Their deaths weren't her fault, never was, never would be. "Uncle Ilyushka is here now." Svetlana calls the Hollander-Rosanovs to inform them Andrei and Alexia have been killed. And that Katarina, his niece, has less than a week before she's officially filed in foster care. Nobody wants to grow up in Russia's foster system. And Uncle Ilyushka of all people, would not allow it.

  15. Ilya smiles and leans in, his lips a few centimeters away from Shane's. "I thought you would not want me getting germs all over the place. You have game in a few days, you wouldn't want to be sick for that." "So you're allowed to play sick, and I'm not?" he asks. Ilya nods again, the tip of his nose bumping Shane's. — Ilya Rozanov hasn't been cared for while sick in decades. This, predictably, brings up some feelings when the Hollanders try to do just that.

  16. “Well?” Shane’s voice catches, teeth gritting as his fingers clench into unforgiving porcelain. Ilya breathes out. “I can smell you from all the way down the hall.” Shane swallows, rolling his eyes as his head drops. “Fuck off.” Ilya pushes himself off from the wall, the heels of his shoes clicking against the tile. Shane doesn’t even fight it when Ilya takes his chin between his fingers, blissfully suffocated by the alpha’s proximity. Or, a Las Vegas heat fic.

What follows is a night of empty locker rooms, long highways, and the slow realization that letting go of hockey doesn’t mean letting go of himself…especially when Ilya Rozanov is there to remind him of everything they’ve already won. Shane and Ilya are still learning parts of each other. Shane drops for the first time. With a timid knock on the door, Shane barely had time to regret it before it swung open. He was greeted by an already shirtless Ilya, eyes dark and intent, hands already on him, tugging him over the threshold like Shane might vanish if he hesitated. The door shut behind them with a solid click, sealing them off from the hallway, the sound sharp enough to make Shane suck in a breath. Their lips crashed together immediately. Messy, desperate, all teeth and breath. Shane made a small, broken noise into Ilya’s mouth as he was pushed back against the door, palms flattening uselessly against Ilya’s chest as if he could slow this down. He didn’t want to. He couldn’t. Ilya’s grip was unyielding at his hips, grounding him even as Shane’s pulse skittered wildly. The door was cool against his spine, a brief shock before heat swallowed him again. Clothes were handled poorly, fingers fumbling, tugging, snagging fabric in growing impatience. Shane whined when Ilya pulled away just long enough to drag his shirt over his head, chasing his mouth like he was starving. They stumbled toward the bed, half-falling, half-laughing, refusing to fully separate even as barriers were peeled away and dropped to the floor. Shane’s hands shook as he reached for Ilya, breath already coming too fast, chest tight with need. “Rozanov—” Shane begged when Ilya finally pulled back, the loss of contact making his head spin. Ilya quickly shushed him, thumb pressing firmly under Shane’s chin, forcing him to look up. His expression softened just a fraction before he kissed him again, slower, deeper, like he was claiming him. Shane melted instantly, knees threatening to give out. The bed hit the backs of Shane’s legs and Ilya didn’t hesitate, guiding him down with a steady hand between his shoulder blades. Before the hit the bed Ilya flipped him, Shane landing on his hands and knees. Ilya pushed him down, hand smoothing down his back as Shane practically collapsed onto the mattress, chest pressing into the pillows. Shane shifted restlessly, hips rocking without thinking, already chasing friction. The sheets bunched under his fists as he let out a shaky breath he couldn’t seem to control. “Good, Hollander.” The words hit him like a switch. Shane went pliant, then restless again, caught between melting and writhing. Ilya muttered something low in Russian, the sound curling around Shane’s nerves as he kissed his shoulder, then along his spine. When Ilya blanketed over him briefly, the weight made Shane groan, back arching instinctively. “Please,” Shane breathed, barely audible, not even sure what he was asking for anymore. Ilya shifted back, hands firm on Shane’s thighs, kneading into muscle with deliberate pressure. Shane shuddered at the touch, breath breaking when Ilya leaned forward. A helpless whine tore from his throat, loud and unfiltered, his hips jerking forward before he could stop himself. “Shane,” Ilya warned quietly, but there was amusement threaded through it. “I can’t—” Shane gasped, words tangling as Ilya worked with maddening patience. His fingers clawed at the sheets, knuckles white, every nerve screaming for more. “Rozanov, please, please—” “Relax, Hollander. I’ve got you.” Ilya’s voice was calm, grounding, infuriatingly steady. Shane’s nerves were already sprinting ahead of him, frantic and oversensitive, his body trembling under Ilya’s hands. The soft click of a cap made Shane jolt despite himself, a sharp inhale tearing out of him. “So jumpy today,” Ilya mused, spreading warmth over his fingers. Shane swallowed hard, hips rocking again, unable to stay still. “I need you,” he said, voice breaking. “Rozanov please, I need you inside me.” “We prep first.” Ilya kissed the base of Shane’s spine, lingering there just long enough to make Shane whine before pulling away. When the pressure finally came, Shane gasped, forehead pressing into the pillow. “That’s good,” Ilya murmured. “Relax.” Shane tried. He really did. His hands fisted tighter in the sheets, breath stuttering, every inch of him buzzing with sensation. Heat crawled up his spine, pooling low and sharp, his body betraying him as he pushed back instinctively, desperate and uncoordinated. This angle was too much. Everything felt sharper, deeper, overwhelming in the best and worst way. His eyes glazed over before squeezing shut, mouth falling open as a broken sound slipped free. “Rozanov—” Shane cut himself off with a whine, the name dissolving into noise as Ilya murmured something approving above him, hands steady, presence firm, letting Shane unravel at his own frantic pace. ———————- Ilya shushed him again, voice firm this time, cutting through the static in Shane’s head. “You’re okay. Let me in, Hollander.” Shane nodded, or thought he did. Everything felt disconnected, like his body was several seconds behind his thoughts. The pressure built and shifted until it tipped him clean out of himself, sensation blurring into something too big to hold all at once. “Are you ready?” “Please.” The word fell out of him raw and automatic, stripped of meaning except want.
