When he presses the button on the doorbell, he hears the digitally-produced ding-dong echo from inside. There is a tiny box halfway up the adjacent wall that immediately beeps and emits Shane’s voice. “Hey, you can just leave it on the step, thanks.” Ilya presses his nose into the digital doorbell, which he knows to also contain a camera, and says, “Shane.” A pause. “What the fuck.” A brief cacophony of noise that Ilya can hear even from outside the house. The multiple successive thumps of something falling, Shane swearing loudly and the sound of what can only be a hockey game being paused on the television. He opens the door to reveal that he is nap-rumpled, wearing two pairs of socks and carrying a child in his arms. The only really surprising part is that the socks don’t match, though the child is interesting. Ilya takes an impromptu trip to Montreal. There are unforeseen consequences.

  12. Hayden hated the guy. Hated him. Hated his stupid, smug smirk and the myriad of insults he threw Hayden’s way and the way he made fun of Shane like it was a funny game then looked him up and down like a piece of meat and his reputation of sleeping with everything that fucking moved and the memories of being slammed into the boards by him and quite literally everything about this Russian dickhead. And he hated that he was now going to have to do everything in his power to learn how to tolerate Rozanov because Shane was inexplicably and hopelessly in love with him, and Shane was his brother in every fucking thing but blood, and Hayden was not going to keep being responsible for that sad puppy look on his face every time he realized how poorly they got along. So far, Hayden sucked at it. Big time. --- It bothers Shane that Hayden and Ilya don't get along, so Hayden is putting in the effort to try and see these redeeming qualities Shane claims the guy has. Over the years it becomes easier and easier, until one day, he realizes he doesn't have to actually try anymore. or, 5 times Hayden realized he was starting to tolerate Ilya + 1 time they acknowledged they were actually friends now

  13. The call rings through to voicemail, but Ilya doesn’t listen to the message as he hangs up and starts calling again. Only two rings sound into his ear as he shoves his feet into some shoes before the line connects. “Rozanov.” Hayden Pike drawls, “I thought we agreed to only call if there was an emergency.” “Why the fuck do you think I’m calling?” Ilya snaps, hating that he has to talk to Pike. But Pike is Shane’s best friend. He is also in the same city as Shane and can get to him before Ilya. He can stay until Ilya gets there.

  14. “It’s one of your superstitions, right?” Hayden asked. “Like my hat. It’s your good luck shirt.” Shane felt a chill run down his spine. He hadn’t thought anyone would notice. In truth, he’d barely noticed himself. It wasn’t something he was actively doing. It wasn’t like his weight circuit or his diet or his night routine. It wasn’t meditation or yoga or cross-training. Those were all things he did with meticulous, painstaking purpose. This was just… this was something else. This wasn’t thought driven. If he was being honest, it barely had to do with hockey. It maybe was one of the only things in his life that didn’t have to do with hockey. If he was stressed, he wore the shirt and it made him feel a little bit better. It just so happened that most of the time he was stressed about something to do with hockey. That was it. It was just a feeling. A feeling of calm that came from Ilya Rozanov’s shirt. 17. Then, with a smile in Shane’s voice, “That’s French, Ilya.” Ilya? Had Hayden heard that right? Shane definitely had to be making a joke. Or- or something. Right? And maybe Hayden would have believed that if Shane hadn’t known where Rozanov was a day before anyone else did. Russian… Lily… Ilya… ‘Oh my God’ was the only thought that crossed Hayden’s mind. His fingers gripped at the door, Shane’s head dipped close to the phone visible through the crack. It wasn’t possible. But, he just had a feeling. Something in Hayden’s brain was saying ‘no yeah, that’s Rozanov on the phone.’ Or Hayden Pike figures out Shane and Ilya's secret after overhearing a very consequential phone call. Hayden never imagined his peace would be shattered like this. He bumped his head, unexpectedly gaining the ability to read mind, while simultaneously caught between two lovebirds, Shane and Ilya. (English is not my first language, and there may be issues with the timeline.) Hayden Pike knows he isn't the most dazzling player on the ice, but he is reliable and steady. He is the kind of guy who would show up on time, do his job, and go home to his wife, Jackie, and their twins, Emma and Ruby, and if he is lucky, maybe even catch the last few games on TV before collapsing onto the couch and falling asleep. Therefore, he is absolutely certain of a few things in life: Jackie's Sunday pancakes were the best in Montreal; the kids would make him spend all the money he could possibly have on hockey gear; Shane is the best captain he could have; Shane is a straight man; and Hayden himself is one of the best role players in the NHL. Then, in a meaningless game in November, he was bumped by Cliff Marleau of the Boston Raiders, and everything changed. It isn't even a flagrant foul. Hayden is skating backward, caught up in the rhythm of the game, and didn't even see Marleau coming at him. His head slammed into the ice with a sharp thud that echoed through the Bell Centre. In that instant, he felt dizzy, colors blurred, and the clamor of the crowd turned into a cacophony of noise. When he opened his eyes, Shane was leaning over him, his lips moving. But Hayden couldn't hear Shane's voice; he heard something else. [Please, please, it has to be alright, damn it, it looks terrible. Is he ok? Say something, Pike, say it—] Hayden blinked. Shane's lips didn't move with the words. "Can you hear me?" Shane's voice finally broke through. "Pike? How many fingers?" "Two," Hayden said hoarsely. "I'm alright. Just… give me a second." But he isn't really alright. As the medical team helped him to his feet and escorted him through the players' tunnel, Hayden felt a buzzing in his head, like a radio switching between two channels. Words and phrases swirled in his mind, but he couldn't fully comprehend them. [He looks really badly injured. I can't afford to get hurt again.] [f I'm late for another game, my wife will kill me.] [That new Thai restaurant on St. Lawrence Street…] Maybe I can talk to the coach and try to get more playing time— Various sounds mingled together, like a chaotic symphony, utterly disordered. As the team doctor helped Hayden into the examination room, he pressed his palm to his temple. “Headache?” Dr. Rousseau asked, shining a flashlight into Hayden's eyes. “Yes,” Hayden said, but it isn't just a headache. The sounds were becoming clearer; he could now distinguish the different sounds. [Hope it's nothing serious. I have a wedding to attend next weekend. ]That's Dr. Rousseau. It must be him; he's alone in the room. “I…” Hayden swallowed. “Am I going crazy, Doctor?” Dr. Rousseau gave a reassuring smile. “It's probably just a mild concussion. You'll be fine. Rest for a few days, don't look at screens, and come back for your follow-up appointment next week. Don't participate in any training until I give you permission to recover.” That night, lying in bed next to Jackie, Hayden truly realized the seriousness of his new problem. [I wonder if I locked the car.] He turned his head. Jackie is looking down at her phone, a calm expression on her face. [Emma needs a new pair of figure skates. Maybe we can go to the sporting goods store this weekend. Goodness, they grow up so fast.] “Hey,” Hayden said softly. “Jay?” She looked up. “Hmm?” “What are you thinking about right now?” She raised an eyebrow. “Pike, this is a dangerous question. What’s wrong?” “Just curious.” [—Is this about that celebrity on Twitter? I knew I should have made my account private.] Hayden suppressed a laugh. “Never mind. I love you.” “I love you too, weirdo.” By morning, Hayden had to accept the fact: he could hear other people's thoughts. Not always, and not with everyone, but when he focused intently on someone, their inner monologue would reach his ears clearly. This should have terrified him. However, after the initial panic, Hayden found…it is useful? He discovered that Jackie's favorite coffee isn't her usual vanilla latte but a honey lavender cold brew she'd tried once at a specialty coffee shop, which she'd thought was too expensive. [Eight dollars for a cup of coffee? Insane! But wow, it is so good!] So he learned to make it himself. That Sunday morning, when he served Jackie his homemade coffee, her expression made all the tutorials he'd watched on YouTube

  20. “How’d it go?” Hayden asked, grinning sleepily. “You in love?” In such a panic that he didn’t think about the words, Shane replied “Fuck, yes, I think I love him” That certainly got Hayden’s attention. He sat up in bed and looked at Shane in shock. Shane debated turning back around again at the look on Hayden’s face but instead just stood there frozen. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” Or: Shane accidently comes out to Hayden post tuna melt and it goes from there Shane – November 2016 What is happening? This was bad. This was really fucking bad. Shane’s heart was racing, and it wasn’t from taking the stairs. Every fiber of him wanted to run right back up those stairs and into Ilya’s arms. To wrap himself around him and go to bed with him and wake up with him. And that was why Shane marched straight out of Ilya’s building, and didn’t stop walking until he was safely back in his hotel room. In his panic, he wasn’t careful enough about not waking Hayden. He wasn’t in the room for ten seconds before the bedside lamp was turned on. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” and then seemed to look at Shane more closely and asked “Hey, are you okay?”. Shane didn’t feel okay; in fact, he felt like he might either throw up or pass out. Slowly, he sank to the floor, back against the door, unable to process everything that had happened that day. He wasn’t sure if he was more surprised about being in love with Ilya or sort of accidentally coming out to Hayden. He was vaguely aware of movement in the room and looked up when Hayden hesitantly touched his shoulder. “Um, hey Shane, don’t freak out, okay? It’s okay, I, we’re cool and we can talk about it if you want or not” Shane thought about it and figured that now that the words were out there, he needed to talk to Hayden – he didn’t want to feel awkward every time he saw him, and his shocked brain had managed not to use Ilya’s name during his confession. “I, sorry to drop that on you I just freaked out. I, um, like guys, obviously…” “You being gay or whatever is fine by me and I won’t tell anyone, I swear” “I don’t think I am exactly, it’s complicated” “Okay, you want to talk about this guy, whoever it is? I can see how it would be difficult” This was not something that Shane was okay to talk about, even without names. “It doesn’t matter, okay? We can’t be together so there’s no point thinking about it” Hayden looked at him with a mixture of sadness and exasperation, “Shane…” Shane was unwilling to have this conversation in case he said something that was incriminating. Hayden seemed to be dealing with the idea that Shane was into guys, but he didn’t think he would handle who exactly Shane was into. “Look it’ s fine, I’m gonna have a shower, and obviously you can’t tell anyone about this” “No, I would never” With that Shane got into the shower and stared at the wall for a long while. Hayden – November 2016 Hayden had thought a lot about what Shane had told him the other night. A few things obviously made sense now – Shane’s unwillingness to date or share anything about his dating life, how closed off he was at times, why he was so secretive about meeting people. Hayden was sympathetic to all of this, but what he couldn’t figure out was what was up between Shane and the guy that Shane clearly had in his life. He’d been sneaking off to meet someone in Boston for a good while – Hayden had only realised the pattern recently, but he wouldn’t know if they were meeting at other times. He couldn’t understand the nature of the relationship either, they’d clearly been hooking up for a while and from what Shane had confessed in his panic the other night his feelings, at least, went deep. So why couldn’t they be together, especially since they’d clearly been successful at hiding whatever relationship they had so far? It didn’t make any sense. What made even less sense was a week later when there started to be press about Shane and Rose Landry. Hayden knew they’d both been at JJ’s party the other week – JJ had come into practice bragging about it the next day. Shane had refused to say anything about it to the guys, claiming that he was just respecting Rose. Hayden didn’t know what to make of it. There’s no way Shane had gotten over his mystery guy in the space of a week; Hayden had seen the look on his face in that hotel room, Shane definitely had deep feelings for the guy. That meant that either Rose was helping Shane cover or he was leading her on, neither of which felt very likely. Hayden had always felt like he knew the man very well and, while he might not have figured out all of the key facts, he knew Shane would never intentionally hurt Rose. Seeing as Shane had known Hayden for 7 years and never mentioned he liked guys, it seemed unlikely he’d told Rose in the week he’d known her, but maybe Shane’s guy was a friend of hers? Mystery guy being an actor would explain why absolute secrecy was needed. Hayden decided not to say anything for now out of respect for Shane’s wishes. Shane – January 2017
