“Shane,” Ilya tried again, savouring the snap to attention it earned him, “Take off your clothes. I want to swim with you.” They’ve spent years hiding what they are to each other in hotel rooms with locked doors and stolen hours in the dark. But at Shane’s lake cottage, there’s no one watching and nowhere to hide. When Ilya dives in and calls Shane to follow, it’s the first time they’ve ever done this in daylight, and everything about it feels like stepping off a cliff.

“Yeah, what the hell?” Comeau echoes. “Since when do you go around defending Rozanov?”
“I – I’m not,” Hayden says, starting to carefully fold his clothes so he doesn’t have to look anyone in the eye. Maybe Shane is onto something, always folding his things instead of throwing them into his bag. Gives you a moment to concentrate on something manual, to think before having to respond to questions and comments.
“You literally were defending him right now,” J. J. points out.---
Four times Hayden defends Ilya Rozanov to other people, and one time he defends Ilya from himself.

"Rozanov went to see Shane in the hospital..." One sunny afternoon, after an awkward encounter in the gift shop of Montreal General Hospital, Yuna Hollander decides she hates Ilya Rozanov just a bit less. Translation into Русский available: Семейные узы by chouchoute, silksosoft, WTF Heated rivalry 2026 (fandomHeatedRivalry) David goes to the hospital immediately, of course, but visiting hours are over before Shane gets moved into the observation unit, and eventually he has to leave to get a couple of hours' sleep before heading into work. Yuna wanted to be there; she should have been. She hardly ever misses one of Shane's home games, but there was a major Rolex product launch event in Toronto and she thought it would be good for someone from Shane's camp to make an appearance. Which means she's not there the one time something happens— the one time Shane really needs her. When Yuna finally lands in Montreal, head aching and jaw set, she's running on coffee and fumes, her phone battery at seventeen percent. Of course they've lost her hurried rental car reservation and the only thing left is a huge, unwieldy Lincoln town car. She usually spends a minute walking around any rental with her phone, documenting pre-existing scratches or dings, but she has the feeling she's probably going to scrape this thing along a bollard in the hospital parking garage anyway and quite honestly, at this point, she doesn't give a damn. When she arrives at the hospital, she ducks into a restroom for a moment to practice an encouraging smile in the mirror. It looks unconvincing and terrible. She can't even blame the fluorescent lights. She splashes her face with icy cold water, then folds up a cold wet paper towel and holds it against her eyes for twenty seconds, counting methodically. It helps, a little. The volunteer at the front desk gets flustered when asked for Shane's room number. Luckily for her, not too flustered to request the patient privacy password that Coach Theriault established before she acknowledges that Shane has been admitted and giving Yuna directions to his room. On the way to the elevators, Yuna passes the hospital gift shop, its doors flanked by a display of bouquets and a huge stuffed giraffe with balloons tied around its neck. She pauses. There are things Shane likes when he's in the hospital. Lip balm. Sugarless mints. A nice, solid coffee mug to drink from instead of those fiddly plastic cups. Maybe some gentle cleansing wipes for his face. He hates being gross and sweaty. She steps inside, eyes scanning over the tchotchkes, get-well cards and magazines, candy and gum, and blinks. Is that...? It is. The terror and the bad boy of the league, Ilya Rozanov, in a black suede jacket and fashionably straight-legged jeans. He looks thoughtful and tired, heavy-lidded eyes almost shut as he uses one finger to idly rotate a spinner rack overflowing with small stuffed animals. She doesn't say anything, but he seems to sense her gaze and looks up, startled. "Oh. Mrs. Hollander." "Rozanov," she says coolly. "Uh." He looks her up and down. "You just get in?" She nods, and he pulls his hand away from the spinner rack, oddly tense. "I was just up to see him. He, uh... he seems in good spirits. You know. He's okay." He is not okay. A concussion and a cracked collarbone is not okay. It's weeks of painful recovery and physical therapy, weeks of trying to keep Shane from pushing himself too hard without smothering him— and, as they both know very well, he's out of the playoffs. Yuna takes a deep breath. She knows that none of that is what Rozanov meant, and anyway snapping at him won't do anything to make Shane feel better. Then, of course, because it's Ilya fucking Rozanov, he has to keep pushing. "I should have brought him a Raiders bear, maybe," he says, gesturing at the stuffed toys with a little smirk. "They don't have one, so." "Oh. You think that's funny?" Yuna says, seeing red. "You think this is funny?" "No!" Rozanov says immediately. "No, Mrs. Hollander. I don't think that. I don't." Yuna presses her lips together. She is upset and worried and furious, but not at Rozanov, not really. "Sorry." "No," he says, just as quickly. "I understand. You're good mother. You worry. It's fine." Oh, god, both Rozanov's parents have passed, haven't they? He lost his father a few weeks ago. Maybe that's another reason he looks so hollow and worn out around the eyes. "Really, I... didn't mean to fly off the handle." "No, no," Rozanov mutters, looking down, as if he were more comfortable when she was snapping at him, and less comfortable with a conversation between two adults just talking to each other like humans. There are so many feral hockey boys like Rozanov— on their own in foreign countries since they were teenagers, treating the world like one big locker room, where the biggest dick-swinger always wins. The silence stretches on. She doesn't think she's ever seen Rozanov this quiet for this long, at least not since he made captain and his English started improving enough to give good snappy soundbites. "Well," she says. "It was good of you to stop by." And it was. He didn't have to. No one would have made him. "Well," Rozanov says, "I'm the captain. So." He glances back at the stuffed animals. "I don't mean to make fun. He's just very high right now, you know. You'll see. Everything is funny." He reaches for a little golf-ball sized round bird, practically spherical with a little felt beak and wings. "Maybe this one, eh? To chirp at him." Okay, maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but Yuna has to admit: it's sort of funny. She stifles a half-laugh. His mouth twitches, and she nods and turns away awkwardly to her own shopping... and then somehow, by the time she's done collecting everything Shane needs, Rozanov has actually spent fourteen Canadian dollars on a stupid stuffed bird. He reaches out and drops it gently into her shopping bag without asking. He's still smiling faintly in that half-mocking way that is always so infuriating in interviews. "Thanks," Yuna says flatly, and turns to make her way to the elevator bank. Well, what is she going to do, dig it out and throw it on the ground just because Ilya Rozanov bought it?

“You were so cute,” Shane said, trying not to visibly react that Rozanov was closing the distance between them. He was still wearing his coat, from the outside. “What happened?” he asked, turning to Ilya. Ilya carefully took the picture from his hands, sliding it in a top drawer on top of folded t- shirts. Rozanov exhaled in a half laugh. “I am not cute anymore?” *** A missing scene from pre-tuna melt, Shane is left alone in Ilya’s apartment and he snoops, just a little bit.

It doesn’t take long for their kisses to deepen, Ilya letting one hand roam Shane’s body. He should be self conscious, Shane thinks, but the way Ilya is touching him, kissing him doesn’t even let him hesitate. Ilya nudges Shane onto his side, reaching to grab the lube and a condom from the bedside table. Shane watches him over his shoulder, grabbing the condom when Ilya turns around. “Can we -,” he swallows, “Not use this. Right now at least. Not always, I can’t -,” he huffs a small, self deprecating laugh, then continues rambling, “I’m clean. And you said - We get tested a lot and —.” Ilya kisses him to stop the rambling. Then kisses him again. And again. or the first time Shane & Ilya fuck without a condom (1x06 coda)

Hi. This is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail. The greeting wasn’t a joke or an exaggeration—it was the truth. Shane leaves messages anyway, confessions to a digital void that will never judge him, and never push him away. At least, that’s what he thinks.

“Hollander. Relax. So you lost one game,” Ilya said. “Big deal. Win next time.”
“It is a big deal,” Shane said. His hands were clenched tightly into fists. “It’s not just the game. You know I can’t afford to fuck up like this, not this close to playoffs. It’s a pretty big deal. Fuck. And it’s my fault. I wasn’t focused. I can play better than that, and I just… didn’t.”

“Ok, so… first you gotta get on your knees –” And Shane proceeds to do so. Without thinking about his ‘do’s and ‘don’t’s list. Eyes wide in mild disbelief, Karine gets on her knees beside Shane. “Ok, now go onto your hands and knees, good,” Shane instructs, and they both do so together. Shane stops and removes his glasses, stuffing them back into their pocket, and as they go to their knees, the audience cheers. Weird. “Now, just slide your knees out, yeah, like that.” He slides his knees out, and Karine follows suit, a grimace on her face. OR, Shane goes onto a Late Night talk show. Shane slides onto the bar stool next to him. Elbow-to-elbow. In public, in the light of day, in front of everyone else in the bar. He doesn’t even hesitate. Ilya hadn’t thought Shane would be that brave. or Shane settles into himself. Ilya spirals. Shane walks into the resort bar like he owns it. Shoulders back, relaxed. He looks like he’s on set for one of the commercial shoots that Ilya will never admit he saves to watch when he’s alone. Ilya has seen him in a blazer before, of course. Ilya has seen him in tuxedos, head down and awkward like a kid trying on a grown-up costume. He doesn’t look like that now. He looks like a man dating a movie star. He looks like someone told him he’s Shane fucking Hollander, and he finally believed them. The butterflies that have been fluttering in Ilya’s stomach all morning concentrate into a knot of tension. Shane doesn’t play it cool or pretend not to notice him. He heads straight for Ilya. It’s the first time they’ve been in a city together when the hum of anticipation hasn’t built up under Ilya’s skin. The first time he’s been counting down the days with dread, as well as hungry, unacknowledged longing. Ilya gives himself a pep talk as Shane rounds the bar, and downs what’s left of his liquid courage. It’s time to act casual. What does it matter that Shane has a girlfriend he can be photographed in public with, who can make him smile without the need to hide it, who the world thinks is perfect for him. Ilya couldn’t care less. Shane slides onto the bar stool next to him. Elbow-to-elbow. In public, in the light of day, in front of everyone else in the bar. He doesn’t even hesitate. Ilya hadn’t thought Shane would be that brave. But maybe that isn’t important since they’re nothing anymore, with nothing to hide. Okay, Ilya tells himself. Let’s do this. Shane takes his duties as team captain seriously. Ilya should have expected that, even at the All-Star game, where no one takes anything seriously. Shane brings a different energy than Ilya to the role of captain. He’s calm and focused, attending to details and pre-show rituals like this is any other game of the season. Where Ilya hypes his team up before a game, Shane is the eye of the storm. The rest of the team whoops and jokes in the locker room before they take the ice, and all of them orbit around him like he’s their center of gravity. Ilya is more aware of Shane than he’s pretending to be, which is why he notices Shane circulating. He works his way through the team to speak with each player in turn. He mentions a highlight of their season so far, calling out a standout game or a specific play. He remembers something significant about every single one of them. Of course he does. Ilya wants to roll his eyes, but he has the feeling this isn’t only Shane’s encyclopedic knowledge of hockey at work. Their captain has done his homework. He knows how they shine brightest. Tonight, this is his team. Ilya leans casually against the wall when it’s finally his turn. “Saving best for last? You are here to tell me sweet words about your star player?” Shane’s expression is serious when he says, “Congratulations on not losing every game to Montreal this season.” He can’t hold onto it for long. The corners of his eyes crease and his lips curl up when Ilya dramatically clutches his chest and exclaims, “Everyone else in this room gets compliment.” “I had to think about yours for a while. That’s why I left you for last.” Shane’s eyes dance, bright and warm. “I know you’re not used to a fast center setting the pace. Try to keep up out there, okay?” Ilya doesn’t need to try. He and Shane move together on the ice like extensions of one thought. It’s automatic. Easy. Shane makes a blind pass to him and doesn't look back, like he trusts Ilya to always be exactly where Shane needs him to be. Shane disappears early from the afterparty. Ilya spends half an hour pretending he’s not searching the room for one particular person before he gives up and leaves. Shane doesn’t even glance up when Ilya sits down next to him on the beach. As if he knew Ilya would find him. As if he knew Ilya would look. Before the game, Shane had smelled of a new aftershave or cologne, something cool and spicy. It must have worn off by now, replaced by sunscreen and sweat, or the inoffensive soap from a post-game shower. They’re too close to the ocean, and too far apart from each other, for Ilya to tell. The sunset paints Shane gold. He’d stayed outside today long enough for the sun to bring out every freckle, a thousand constellations across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. Ilya hasn’t been able to keep his eyes off him. By the pool, Shane’s pretty brown eyes had been covered by dark sunglasses that hadn’t actually hidden anything. Ilya would bet that Shane’s gaze was fixed on the water running down his chest and abs more than on his face. Shane has always been a contradiction. He’s all dedication and focus in the rink, and awkward uncertainty once his skates are off. It’s a combination that had fascinated Ilya in their early days—Shane’s capable self-assurance when they played against each other, contrasted against his willingness to let Ilya mold him like clay into the shape of his desire. He carries himself now like he’s as confident off the ice as on it, finally sure of himself. His fingers brush against Ilya’s in the sand without a glance to see who might be watching. He asks for Ilya’s room number as if it’s a foregone conclusion where they’ll end up tonight. Maybe it always has been.

The first time he saw Kip Grady, it was like a vague hum: the soft glow of initial, immediate attraction to a handsome man, letting himself test the water, a few brief words exchanged.
