  1. Shane is minding his business in the kitchen making his smoothie when he starts hearing country music coming from their room upstairs. Eventually Ilya's deep voice could be heard singing along to the chorus as he walks down the stairs to where he's standing. That's when the lyrics register. Credit to Chappell Roan for the lyrics of the song "The Giver" and the inspiration for this story.

  2. “What’s your favorite Russian word?” Ilya sits with his legs caging Shane in from behind, softly kissing the freckles behind his ears and down his neck. “You.” Shane doesn’t hesitate or have to think about it. It’s so simple, yet it means just about everything to him. “Without you I wouldn’t have a reason to love anything else.” His head tilts to say, angling awkwardly as he does his best to face Ilya and gauge his reaction. It’s subtle, but the twitch on the corner of his lips is enough for Shane to lean forward and press a kiss on Ilya's cheek. “Boring, right?” AKA... Ilya has something very important to ask, and Shane couldn't be more prepared to answer him.

  4. They lie in silence for a few moments, the only sound being the steady and slow beating of Shane’s heart on the monitor. He’s perfectly content to just bask in Ilya’s presence and form until the doctor comes back, but eventually, he can feel Ilya staring at him. So he opens his eyes and sees an expectant look on his husband’s face.

    “What?” Shane questions.

“Are we going to talk about it?”

Shane’s brows draw down in confusion. “Talk about what?”

A mischievous grin splits Ilya’s face. “That I am your emergency contact.”

“Oh, my god,” Shane groans. “You are not going to make this a thing. It’s not a big deal.”

Or, hockey injuries are temporary. But having Ilya Rozanov as your emergency contact is forever.

  6. Shane has many routines. He has never hidden the fact that he treats his body like a temple; he's often seen sipping a green vitamin drink or practicing yoga. But his skin care routine is Ilya's favorite. Ilya finds it fascinating when his husband puts on a headband and applies countless creams. One day, inspired, Ilya decides to buy more headbands as a gift for Shane, and a new ritual is born: their couple's skin care routine. "You've turned me into a bore, Shane Hollander-Rozanov," he joked. "You love being boring, Ilya Hollander-Rozanov," Shane countered. "Wrong, I love you. Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.” Ilya said quietly in Russian. As if it were something only Shane could hear. Ilya had few certainties in life, but this was one of them. He wouldn't live without Shane. After all, Shane is your heart, and you can't live without one. “Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.”, with a heavy accent, Shane repeated what Ilya had said. Word for word engraved in his heart.

  10. “Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking? “Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.” Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette. He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly. “I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.” Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.” —————— Or: Shane and Ilya get sent to reconciliation therapy, and of course, handle it super well.

  11. Shane Hollander is going to murder his agent. And he means that literally. Because his agent is the reason he’s currently wearing a hot mic during Hockey Night in Canada. Against the Ottawa Centaurs. Against Ilya. Ilya, who has no filter. Ilya, who thinks workplace professionalism is a hilarious suggestion for other people. Ilya, who has spent a decade perfecting the art of saying absolutely unhinged things to Shane on the ice, safe in the knowledge that nobody can hear him. Ilya, who definitely doesn’t know about the microphone. What follows is sixty minutes of Shane’s life flashing before his eyes while his secret boyfriend enthusiastically discusses their sex life, their broken furniture, and exactly what he wants to do to Shane after the game — all broadcast to millions of viewers. The problem? Shane can’t get a word in edgewise to warn him.

  12. "Have you compared yourself?" His eyes were locked on his phone, and his voice could not hide his insecurity. "Compared myself?, to what exactly?" Shane's eyes were still fixed on the TV. Good. He didn't need him scanning his facial expressions. "To anyone. When playing hockey Hollander. Have you compared yourself to anyone?" "Oh. Umm..." His face did a ninety degree turn and was now looking at him "Yeah, I guess. Why'd you ask?" "To who?" This was so stupid. He didn't even know why he had asked it in the first place and was now regretting opening his stupid mouth. The need to have someone else to be jealous over was non existant, so why had he asked? "Well..." "To who Hollander?" On single beat and then "To you Ilya. Obviously" Shane's eyes met his for a split of a second and then he got up and made his way to the kitchen "More coffee?" ------------------------------------- Or: Ilya has only ever compared himself to Shane and now wonders if his husband has done the same. Surely it can't lead to anything too bad right?

  18. Three years after retiring together, Shane and Ilya are back at each other’s throats. The sticks have been traded for whistles and the peace of retirement has been replaced by the chaos of a three-year-old, but some things never change. In hockey, ice time is sacred, and neither man is backing down. "Lower your center of gravity, Haas," Shane called out, his voice echoing. "If you’re top- heavy, the defense is going to eat you alive in the corner." Luca Haas panted, elbows braced on his knees as he wheezed. "Fatherhood has been good for you, yes? You’ve really got the 'disappointed dad' look down. I feel like you’re going to put me in time out and take away my iPad." Shane grinned. Three years into retirement, he still missed playing with teammates like Luca, but coaching kept the fire lit and he had plenty of excitement in his life to keep him busy. "Keep talking and you’re grounded." The heavy double doors at the end of the rink swung open. Shane looked up, his expression softening instantly. Ilya strode toward the ice, looking every bit the high-fashion retired superstar in a long wool coat. Tugging at his arm, was a three-year-old. "Yarinushka, slow down! You will trip," Ilya called out. Yarina Ilyinichna Hollander-Rozanova was a vision in a custom red Ottawa Charge jersey, the nameplate on her back spanning nearly the entire width of her tiny shoulders. "Daddy!" Rina chirped, her eyes wide at the ice. Shane skated to the gate, leaning over it as Rina scrambled into his arms for a messy, cold- cheeked kiss. "Hey, bunny. What are you doing here?" He looked up at Ilya, noticing the flash of crimson on his husband’s hand as he adjusted Rina’s hair. "You went with red? Little on the nose isn’t it?" "She insisted," Ilya said, holding up his hands with a shrug. Red shimmered on his nails, identical to the tiny fingers Rina was currently wiggling at Shane. "Is important to look good for first day." Haas skated over, breathing hard. "Hey, Little Hollanov! You coming to help me with my backhand? Your dad is being mean to me." "Luca!" Ilya greeted him with a grin. He scooped Rina up and, before Shane could protest, handed the toddler over the gate directly into Haas’s arms. "Here. Practice lifting the cup. Is very important you do not drop it. Very embarrassing." Shane blinked. "Whoa, wait… why isn't she with Mom and Dad?" “Yuna’s car made wolf bird noise." Ilya said, waving a hand dismissively. “They are at mechanic shop." "Okay... so why didn't you drop her off there?" Ilya shrugged, checking his cuticles. "No time. Nail appointment ran long. Cannot be late for first day." "You brought a toddler to a practice because of a manicure?" Shane hissed, though he was fighting a smile. "Besides," Ilya added, leaning over the railing. "I think my team will like it. She is like cute mascot. Much better than scary, naked man-horse. Good for morale." Shane groaned, rubbing his temples. "That’s incredibly sexist, Ilya. Your players are professionals. They don’t want to babysit a child just because they’re—" Shane stopped. He followed Ilya’s pointed gaze toward the goalpost at the far end of the rink. A group of the league's toughest enforcers and fastest wingers had abandoned their drills. Hayes, was kneeling on the ice, trying to fit his massive, terrifyingly painted goalie mask over Rina’s head. She stood there, dwarfed by the the giant men around her, looking exactly like Boo surrounded by her colorful monsters. She let out a high-pitched giggle, and the six-foot-four enforcers collectively cooed like they were looking at a kitten. "See?" Ilya purred. "Is not sexist. Good for everyone’s morale." Then Ilya’s face shifted from teasing to serious. "Speaking of late, lyubimiy... you are cutting into our time. Shoo. Go away. Get your stinky boys off my ice." Shane stood up straight. "The Centaurs have the ice until 11:00. You’re supposed to start in the training room." "I want team meeting here before we train," Ilya insisted, gesturing to the ice. "I have very inspiring speech for first day. I need the... the weight. The... gravity." He snapped his fingers. "Gravitas?" Shane supplied. "Yes! Gravitas," Ilya nodded. "I need ice for gravitas. You cannot give speech about glory on a carpet, Sheniuchka. It feels cheap." Shane. "What’s the deadlock here, boys?" Wiebe walked up behind Ilya with a whistle between his teeth. He looked from his assistant coach’s stubborn stance to Ilya’s defiant chin. "He's trying to kick us off the ice early," Shane complained. "Now who is being sexist, hmm?" Ilya countered. “You think you deserve ice just because you are male team?” Weibe shook his head in exasperation. "Alright…listen, you two are gonna have to learn to share. Now that the Charge are playing at the stadium and sharing this facility, this rink belongs to all of us.”

  19. Ilya closed his eyes. His head was hurting even more. His back too. Had he hurt himself on the ice? “You are a liar.” He felt the couch move as Shane leaned over to flick him in the ear. “Ow,” he complained. “Stop being an asshole.” “Leave me alone.” Ilya ran a hand over his face. Even his own hands were too warm. “I have headache.” He opened his eyes to see Shane looking at him. He had little crinkles above his eyebrows. The one on the right side was deeper than the left. That meant he was worried. Or Ilya's feeling under the weather
