  1. “Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking? “Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.” Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette. He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly. “I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.” Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.” —————— Or: Shane and Ilya get sent to reconciliation therapy, and of course, handle it super well.

  2. “Okay,” Farah began, “We can announce your relationship in two ways. We can hard launch it, like ripping off a bandaid. Or we…soft launch. Slowly. Very slowly. Give people time to wrap their heads around the idea, so that by the time you guys announce your relationship, most people will be expecting it.” Later that week, Shane Hollander @shanehollander24 posted: Great game tonight @realrozanov but don’t get your hopes up when Montreal’s in town. Thirty seconds later, Milly @shaydenforever replied: i’m screaming not my baby shane’s first post in a year being a chirp keep the PR friendship alive Thuy @hollanderposting: I just know his momager yuna (affectionate) put a gun to his head and said “if you really cared about your charity getting donations you’d be more active on social media” and you know what. 3. “I’m coming to the cottage,” Shane heard when he answered his phone. He was momentarily stunned, he hadn’t expected Ilya to bring it up again himself, let alone say yes so easily. “Shane, are you there? Or ehm, if you don’t want me to come anymore, that’s okay too,” he heard Ilya stammer. “No!” Shane exclaimed quickly. “I definitely want you to come!” “Oh, thank goodness, for a minute I thought I’d made a fool of myself, because you didn’t remember even asking me or something. You did seem pretty high when you did.” Shane laughed at that. “I was very high, but not just on the meds,” he said. “Well Mr. Hollander, are you flirting with me?” Ilya exclaimed and then he giggled. He actually giggled and the sound made Shane feel weak in the knees. “What if I am?” he breathed out. “You have lot of talk,” Ilya replied, and Shane could almost hear him smirking. “Maybe you should put your hands where your mouth is!” Shane barked out a laugh. “What?” Ilya asked, confused. “Is that not the saying?” “It’s ‘Put your money where your mouth is’,” Shane replied, laughing. Or where Ilya comes to the cottage, but is he ready for the secrets Shane has been keeping?

  4. Then, with a smile in Shane’s voice, “That’s French, Ilya.” Ilya? Had Hayden heard that right? Shane definitely had to be making a joke. Or- or something. Right? And maybe Hayden would have believed that if Shane hadn’t known where Rozanov was a day before anyone else did. Russian… Lily… Ilya… ‘Oh my God’ was the only thought that crossed Hayden’s mind. His fingers gripped at the door, Shane’s head dipped close to the phone visible through the crack. It wasn’t possible. But, he just had a feeling. Something in Hayden’s brain was saying ‘no yeah, that’s Rozanov on the phone.’ Or Hayden Pike figures out Shane and Ilya's secret after overhearing a very consequential phone call. (This fic is mostly show compliant, with a couple details from the book thrown in. Some of it I changed completely for my own purposes.)

Hayden never imagined his peace would be shattered like this. He bumped his head, unexpectedly gaining the ability to read mind, while simultaneously caught between two lovebirds, Shane and Ilya. (English is not my first language, and there may be issues with the timeline.) Hayden Pike knows he isn't the most dazzling player on the ice, but he is reliable and steady. He is the kind of guy who would show up on time, do his job, and go home to his wife, Jackie, and their twins, Emma and Ruby, and if he is lucky, maybe even catch the last few games on TV before collapsing onto the couch and falling asleep. Therefore, he is absolutely certain of a few things in life: Jackie's Sunday pancakes were the best in Montreal; the kids would make him spend all the money he could possibly have on hockey gear; Shane is the best captain he could have; Shane is a straight man; and Hayden himself is one of the best role players in the NHL. Then, in a meaningless game in November, he was bumped by Cliff Marleau of the Boston Raiders, and everything changed. It isn't even a flagrant foul. Hayden is skating backward, caught up in the rhythm of the game, and didn't even see Marleau coming at him. His head slammed into the ice with a sharp thud that echoed through the Bell Centre. In that instant, he felt dizzy, colors blurred, and the clamor of the crowd turned into a cacophony of noise. When he opened his eyes, Shane was leaning over him, his lips moving. But Hayden couldn't hear Shane's voice; he heard something else. [Please, please, it has to be alright, damn it, it looks terrible. Is he ok? Say something, Pike, say it—] Hayden blinked. Shane's lips didn't move with the words. "Can you hear me?" Shane's voice finally broke through. "Pike? How many fingers?" "Two," Hayden said hoarsely. "I'm alright. Just… give me a second." But he isn't really alright. As the medical team helped him to his feet and escorted him through the players' tunnel, Hayden felt a buzzing in his head, like a radio switching between two channels. Words and phrases swirled in his mind, but he couldn't fully comprehend them. [He looks really badly injured. I can't afford to get hurt again.] [f I'm late for another game, my wife will kill me.] [That new Thai restaurant on St. Lawrence Street…] Maybe I can talk to the coach and try to get more playing time— Various sounds mingled together, like a chaotic symphony, utterly disordered. As the team doctor helped Hayden into the examination room, he pressed his palm to his temple. “Headache?” Dr. Rousseau asked, shining a flashlight into Hayden's eyes. “Yes,” Hayden said, but it isn't just a headache. The sounds were becoming clearer; he could now distinguish the different sounds. [Hope it's nothing serious. I have a wedding to attend next weekend. ]That's Dr. Rousseau. It must be him; he's alone in the room. “I…” Hayden swallowed. “Am I going crazy, Doctor?” Dr. Rousseau gave a reassuring smile. “It's probably just a mild concussion. You'll be fine. Rest for a few days, don't look at screens, and come back for your follow-up appointment next week. Don't participate in any training until I give you permission to recover.” That night, lying in bed next to Jackie, Hayden truly realized the seriousness of his new problem. [I wonder if I locked the car.] He turned his head. Jackie is looking down at her phone, a calm expression on her face. [Emma needs a new pair of figure skates. Maybe we can go to the sporting goods store this weekend. Goodness, they grow up so fast.] “Hey,” Hayden said softly. “Jay?” She looked up. “Hmm?” “What are you thinking about right now?” She raised an eyebrow. “Pike, this is a dangerous question. What’s wrong?” “Just curious.” [—Is this about that celebrity on Twitter? I knew I should have made my account private.] Hayden suppressed a laugh. “Never mind. I love you.” “I love you too, weirdo.” By morning, Hayden had to accept the fact: he could hear other people's thoughts. Not always, and not with everyone, but when he focused intently on someone, their inner monologue would reach his ears clearly. This should have terrified him. However, after the initial panic, Hayden found…it is useful? He discovered that Jackie's favorite coffee isn't her usual vanilla latte but a honey lavender cold brew she'd tried once at a specialty coffee shop, which she'd thought was too expensive. [Eight dollars for a cup of coffee? Insane! But wow, it is so good!] So he learned to make it himself. That Sunday morning, when he served Jackie his homemade coffee, her expression made all the tutorials he'd watched on YouTube

  8. God. What the fuck had just happened. Shane pressed his head between his knees, the joints tight against his ears as he squeezed his thighs together, putting pressure on his head between his legs. Sometimes, that helped him calm down. But the scent of Rozanov, the phantom touch still lingering against his skin... ... the bite mark throbbing at the back of his neck. Or: After that fateful night in Vegas, Shane is left with a huge problem. A massive problem at the centre of his neck. || A/N: For people worried about the Rape/Non-Con tag. It's ONLY about the Non- Consentual Claiming bite, and them fucking while Ilya is drunk (which is only mentioned, not explicitly written). NOTHING else in that regard happens.

  9. "Hayden felt bad for possibly intruding on his friend’s privacy, but he was worried. His 'dad sense' as his eldest had dubbed it, was tingling. It had been a couple of minutes and he’d rung the doorbell twice yet still no answer from Shane. He tried the front door which swung open. Kicking off his shoes and leaving them on the mat, he entered the house, calling out 'Hollzy?' as he went. 'Shane? Bud?' Hayden rounded the corner into the kitchen where he was greeted by the last sight he’d ever expected. Ilya fucking Rozanov. In Shane Hollander’s kitchen. Not only that, Rozanov had clearly just been hugging Shane. Hayden’s best friend Shane, who was supposedly Rozanov’s biggest rival. What the fuck?" --- Does what it says on the tin lol.

  10. Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice. It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray. - Or, Shane's game is cancelled and he reads Ilya's would have been last messages in a tiny hotel room with JJ and Hayden at his side.

  11. Ilya Rozanov thinks it's probably best to decline the invitation to the 2017 All-Star Game. It's not swaggering, knothead alpha male bullshit; it's a survival strategy. He doesn't think it'll end well for anyone if he's forced into playing an instinct-driven, blood-pumping sport like ice hockey with Shane Hollander right now, not when Hollander is probably going to bring his new girlfriend to Tampa for the weekend.

But it's Hollander. It's Shane. So of course Ilya doesn't decline the stupid invitation. And of course the game goes sideways.

That doesn't mean it doesn't end well.

  17. “How’d it go?” Hayden asked, grinning sleepily. “You in love?” In such a panic that he didn’t think about the words, Shane replied “Fuck, yes, I think I love him” That certainly got Hayden’s attention. He sat up in bed and looked at Shane in shock. Shane debated turning back around again at the look on Hayden’s face but instead just stood there frozen. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” Or: Shane accidently comes out to Hayden post tuna melt and it goes from there Shane – November 2016 What is happening? This was bad. This was really fucking bad. Shane’s heart was racing, and it wasn’t from taking the stairs. Every fiber of him wanted to run right back up those stairs and into Ilya’s arms. To wrap himself around him and go to bed with him and wake up with him. And that was why Shane marched straight out of Ilya’s building, and didn’t stop walking until he was safely back in his hotel room. In his panic, he wasn’t careful enough about not waking Hayden. He wasn’t in the room for ten seconds before the bedside lamp was turned on. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” and then seemed to look at Shane more closely and asked “Hey, are you okay?”. Shane didn’t feel okay; in fact, he felt like he might either throw up or pass out. Slowly, he sank to the floor, back against the door, unable to process everything that had happened that day. He wasn’t sure if he was more surprised about being in love with Ilya or sort of accidentally coming out to Hayden. He was vaguely aware of movement in the room and looked up when Hayden hesitantly touched his shoulder. “Um, hey Shane, don’t freak out, okay? It’s okay, I, we’re cool and we can talk about it if you want or not” Shane thought about it and figured that now that the words were out there, he needed to talk to Hayden – he didn’t want to feel awkward every time he saw him, and his shocked brain had managed not to use Ilya’s name during his confession. “I, sorry to drop that on you I just freaked out. I, um, like guys, obviously…” “You being gay or whatever is fine by me and I won’t tell anyone, I swear” “I don’t think I am exactly, it’s complicated” “Okay, you want to talk about this guy, whoever it is? I can see how it would be difficult” This was not something that Shane was okay to talk about, even without names. “It doesn’t matter, okay? We can’t be together so there’s no point thinking about it” Hayden looked at him with a mixture of sadness and exasperation, “Shane…” Shane was unwilling to have this conversation in case he said something that was incriminating. Hayden seemed to be dealing with the idea that Shane was into guys, but he didn’t think he would handle who exactly Shane was into. “Look it’ s fine, I’m gonna have a shower, and obviously you can’t tell anyone about this” “No, I would never” With that Shane got into the shower and stared at the wall for a long while. Hayden – November 2016 Hayden had thought a lot about what Shane had told him the other night. A few things obviously made sense now – Shane’s unwillingness to date or share anything about his dating life, how closed off he was at times, why he was so secretive about meeting people. Hayden was sympathetic to all of this, but what he couldn’t figure out was what was up between Shane and the guy that Shane clearly had in his life. He’d been sneaking off to meet someone in Boston for a good while – Hayden had only realised the pattern recently, but he wouldn’t know if they were meeting at other times. He couldn’t understand the nature of the relationship either, they’d clearly been hooking up for a while and from what Shane had confessed in his panic the other night his feelings, at least, went deep. So why couldn’t they be together, especially since they’d clearly been successful at hiding whatever relationship they had so far? It didn’t make any sense. What made even less sense was a week later when there started to be press about Shane and Rose Landry. Hayden knew they’d both been at JJ’s party the other week – JJ had come into practice bragging about it the next day. Shane had refused to say anything about it to the guys, claiming that he was just respecting Rose. Hayden didn’t know what to make of it. There’s no way Shane had gotten over his mystery guy in the space of a week; Hayden had seen the look on his face in that hotel room, Shane definitely had deep feelings for the guy. That meant that either Rose was helping Shane cover or he was leading her on, neither of which felt very likely. Hayden had always felt like he knew the man very well and, while he might not have figured out all of the key facts, he knew Shane would never intentionally hurt Rose. Seeing as Shane had known Hayden for 7 years and never mentioned he liked guys, it seemed unlikely he’d told Rose in the week he’d known her, but maybe Shane’s guy was a friend of hers? Mystery guy being an actor would explain why absolute secrecy was needed. Hayden decided not to say anything for now out of respect for Shane’s wishes. Shane – January 2017
