  1. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

  2. In pro sports, getting injured is just a given. Especially when the playing field isn’t a field at all, but a slick shelf of ice on which twelve men strap blades to their feet and slap a solid disc of vulcanised rubber around with big-ass sticks. So yes, Shane is hurt. Not bad, but kind of bad. Like...in the usual kind of hockey way. It's nothing to panic about but it would be nice if Ilya texted him back with a little more concern about it. Right? OR Shane gets hurt and then overthinks about everything. Ilya is a menace.

  3. "We need a bassist. We don’t have a lot of options, so if Shane can keep up, he’s got the gig. I’m pulling rank as the frontwoman, sorry.”

Ilya could tell she was serious and sighed heavily.

“I am telling you, Shane Hollander is never going to be able to keep up with me.”

Ilya and Svetlana's local indie punk band is short a bassist, and Shane Hollander seems to be available, but Ilya hates the guy. You can probably guess what happens next.

  4. Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.

It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.

  6. “You’re sick,” says Shane, albeit shakily because he isn’t sure about this. He isn’t sure about them, or what they are. He doesn’t know if he’s allowed to care or worry because he doesn’t know what to call them. There is no routine or rules. All he knows is he probably shouldn’t be calling the captain of another team, especially not in the locker room. He shuts his locker and grabs his bag. “You are obvious. Did you call me to say obvious things, like sky is blue? Or Montreal sucks. Or that you cry when you come?” It sounds like he’s smiling. Shane’s stomach swoops, tripping over itself in a swell of affection. He rubs his hand over his face, feeling disoriented by the flood of conflicting emotions. “Fuck you,” Shane snaps, habitually. or: ilya always texts shane before they play against each other, but today he doesn’t. shane, and all spectating eyes, can tell someone is off with boston’s captain.

”Shane Hollander, Montreal’s perfect captain,” Ilya mutters. His breath tickles Shane’s ear. Shane turns his head, tips his chin up and lets Ilya kiss him right against the front door until his lips are buzzing with it. He is what Ilya says he is — he’s boring and proper, polite. He sticks to his meal plan and eats brown rice and vegetables and steamed fish, and no processed sugar. He tries not to make his parents worry. He gives perfectly fine, safe interviews and ignores it when the press tries to get him to say anything that would be out of line, and he is professional and good at it. No one needs to know that he lights up under Ilya’s touch like the New Year’s Eve sky, how easily he goes down to his knees for him, how his heartbeat kicks into overdrive the second Ilya leans into his space. It is only for Shane to know, and for Ilya, maybe, if he would like to. Or: Shane Hollander and the pressure of being in the spotlight.

  9. “Wow,” Shane said, grinning like he’d just scored the winning goal in overtime. “This is… this is, uh—” he broke off to laugh. “Sorry,” he said. “It’s just really...” He waved the phone at Ilya for emphasis. “Wow.” “Yeah.” Ilya took his phone back. “‘Wow’.” Shane laughed again. “So, me in gear, huh? That’s what gets you hard?” ----- Injured and resting in Shane's house in Montreal, Ilya finds himself drawn to edits of his boyfriend's best moments on ice. “Worried?” said Shane. “Oh, no, I wouldn’t say I was worried. Just curious, I guess.” It was his worried voice. His thinking-too-hard voice. But Ilya was a nice boyfriend, so he wouldn’t point it out. “Curious about what, then?” “Well, like I said earlier,” Shane said. “You cried. When I…when I said I love you.” Shane wants a debrief on the whole love confession thing. Ilya thinks Shane is nosy (recently he has learned to say this), but he is not in the habit of saying no to his boyfriend, so...feelings it is.

  11. Ilya shrugs and runs his hand from Shane’s waist down to his ass and back up. “But you are so good at it. What is English saying? Having it with science?” “Having it down to a science.” “Exactly. Some things come natural to you, yes? Doing your bottom prep stuff. Taking my cock. You are perfect bottom. Made to be bottom. You love to be bottom.” “I do. I love it.” Shane swallows, reminded of exactly where he is and what he’s doing, a cautiously confident smile on his face as he starts to ride more with his legs than his hips. “And you thought I would throw it all away for some Taco Bell.” OR; shane hollander's foolproof bottom prep routine and how his lovely boyfriend takes care of him

  12. “Why?” Shane’s eyes find his. The horror is still there, but ‘gag gift’ was the right thing to say. 14. Ilya: No goals. I am not sure you deserve the treat I promised you earlier ;) Shane: I don’t remember you saying anything about scoring. Only winning. Ilya: I don’t know, Hollander. I may have to be convinced. OR After Shane’s first game in the league without Ilya, Ilya rewards him for the team’s win. The Ottawa Centaurs had won their first game of the season 2-0 against their Florida rivals. Shane should be thrilled, the rink had been packed with fans cheering on their home team and Wyatt Hayes had shut out the other team with a few highlight worthy saves. Both Zane Boodram and Troy Barrett had scored goals, leading the team to victory, but despite all of this, Shane didn’t feel the same excitement he normally felt winning. While his teammates were celebrating, he had been rushing through his after game routine in order to get out of the locker room as soon as possible. It was the first season that Shane and Ilya weren’t playing together as Ilya had decided to retire after they’d won the Stanley Cup back to back over the last two seasons. When Shane joined the Centaurs during free agency 5 years ago, the team had begun creating a dynasty with the two best forwards in the league. Shane was forever grateful that he’d gotten to play with Ilya during those five seasons, but he wished they had more time together. Shane had been convinced that they would retire together, but Ilya was done with hockey and Shane knew that he had at least a few years left with the sport he loved. Despite Shane’s mixed emotions, he knew that Ilya was excited to focus on other things like the Irina Foundation, spending the day with their dog Anya, and finally being a hockey WAG. Ilya had spent the day stressing about his first impression as a WAG even though he’d already known a majority of the women who made up the group. Shane had managed to distract him before the game started and when Ilya had left the house to meet the WAGs before the game, he’d been thrilled to catch up on all of the gossip. Shane may have missed seeing Ilya on the ice, but he was excited to have someone waiting for him outside the locker room. He dug his phone out of his bag and powered it on, he disliked the distractions that came with it buzzing away from notifications during his pregame rituals or when he was trying to stay focused in between periods. As soon as the screen turned on, he navigated to his texts, sending a quick thank you to his parents and Hayden who’d sent him congratulations on the win. When he opened his thread with Ilya, he saw multiple messages waiting for him: Ilya: I cannot believe you missed that shot. Ilya: Congrats on the assist. It is still not a goal though. Ilya: Wow that save by Hayes was impressive. Ilya: I have started a bet with Harris about who will score a goal first. You or Troy? Ilya: You owe me $100 bucks. I cannot believe Troy scored before you. Ilya: No goals. I am not sure you deserve the treat I promised you earlier ;) Ilya: I am proud of you. Shane’s heart warmed at the teasing, happy that Ilya had taken the time to text him during the game even though he knew that Shane kept his phone off. He racked his brain, running through the various ways he could respond to the messages, before replying. Shane: I don’t remember you saying anything about scoring. Only winning. Ilya: I don’t know, Hollander. I may have to be convinced. Shane smiled and set his phone down to finish getting dressed. Once he was done, he turned towards his teammates and congratulated them on the win. A few of the younger guys were going to celebrate at a nearby club and attempted to invite Shane, but he passed on the invitation. He wasn’t a fan of the chaos that came with the scene and he had better things to do with his night. He exited the locker room, finding Ilya and Harris leaning against the wall and laughing. Shane was glad that Ilya didn’t have to be the only husband in the WAG group and that the Centaurs as a whole were extremely supportive of their relationship. It had been rough when they were outed to the league and Montreal had turned their back on Shane. Thankfully, he’d been accepted with open arms by the team he’d grown up rooting for. Ilya’s eyes lit up when he spotted Shane, waving him over. He walked up to the men and Ilya gave him a kiss. “You will never guess what Harris was just telling me,” Ilya said excitedly. “His parents found another dog at the orchard. It is a sign.” Shane looked at the two men suspiciously. He wasn’t going to say no to an abandoned dog and Ilya knew that, but part of him wondered if it was all a ploy for Ilya to bring home a dog from the shelter that he’d fallen in love with. It all felt too coincidental for a dog to appear at the orchard the same day Ilya suggested getting Anya a companion. “That’s awful. People who abandon dogs like that are evil,” Shane agreed. “Do you have any leads on who did it?” “My family set up cameras around the property because it was happening so often. They already have the license plate to the cops, but Troy and I were going to foster her until she found a home,” Harris said. “That’s great. What type of dog is she?” Shane asked. He wasn’t going to say no, especially now that Ilya was home all day, but he still wanted to see what he was getting himself into. “She’s a mixed breed. Not very big either. Here, I’ve got a picture.” Harris pulled out his phone and showed Shane a picture of a small dog curled up next to his dog Chiron. “Oh she’s tiny,” Shane cooed. He was already half in love with the dog himself now just from seeing the photos. Ilya looked thrilled as he took in Shane’s reaction. He probably could already tell that Shane was going to say yes. “I guess we could take her off of your hands,” Shane said, trying to come off as nonchalant. “Ilya has been wanting another dog anyways, and she seems like the perfect edition.” “I knew you weren’t going to be able to resist her cute face,” Ilya cheered. “I cannot wait to pick her up and spoil her rotten.”

  17. Shane Hollander accidentally becomes the internet’s favorite “work wife.” Ilya Rozanov thinks this is the funniest thing that has ever happened and commits to the bit with horrifying sincerity. It started at the press conference in Tampa. Shane Hollander sat ramrod straight at the long table, hands clasped in front of him, the living embodiment of Canadian restraint drilled into his bones since minor hockey. He answered questions about Montreal’s power play the way a man answers a fire drill: calmly, correctly, and without a flicker of surprise. Every response sounded memorized, a careful blend of polite deflection and measured praise for his teammates, calibrated to say nothing memorable unless it involved a goal or a fight. He was excellent at it, so professionally dull it bordered on art. Three seats down, Ilya Rozanov was putting on an entirely different show. Fresh off a hat trick that had buried Montreal yet again, Ilya lounged in his chair like the building had been constructed around him. His tie was already loosened, his top button undone, because rules were for people who needed them. One arm draped along the back of the empty chair beside him, he dissected his own brilliance in that lazy drawl that made reporters lean closer and fans either swoon or grind their teeth. When the inevitable question about their rivalry landed, because it always did and always would, Ilya’s gaze slid sideways for a fraction of a second, just long enough for Shane to feel it land low in his gut like a body check he had not braced for and absolutely should have seen coming. “Rozanov, you and Hollander seem to find each other all over the ice every time you play. Is that something you actively look for, or is it just instinct at this point?” “Of course,” Ilya said, his accent thickening as he took his time with it. “I always know exactly where Hollander is on the ice. Is like…” He paused, tilting his head as if searching for the right English word, though Shane knew damn well it was already chambered. “Is like built-in radar.” A couple of reporters chuckled. Someone from TSN, a voice Shane recognized even while refusing to look up, leaned into it with the grin of a man who thought he was about to strike gold. “You two have been going at each other for years now. That’s quite the partnership you’ve got, alongside one hell of a rivalry.” Ilya tasted the word partnership before answering, eyes flicking to Shane again. Then he turned back to the room, savoring it like good vodka. “Partnership,” he repeated, letting the r stretch. “Yes. Good word. We understand each other very well.” He leaned forward, elbows on the table now, his voice dropping into that conspiratorial register that made everyone listen closer than they meant to. “Sometimes I think Shane knows what I’m going to do before I even decide. Is very… intimate, the way he reads me.” Laughter rolled through the room, easy and appreciative, the sound people make when they think they’re sharing a harmless joke about hockey jargon. Shane felt his face heat instantly and was grateful for the bright lights masking it. He reached for his water bottle on instinct and took a swallow, which turned into a mistake the moment Ilya added, almost casually, “He always knows exactly where I should put my stick.” Shane choked hard enough that the moderator glanced over in concern. He waved a hand, coughing and thumping his chest as if he could knock the humiliation loose, eyes watering as he fought for air. A few reporters shot him sympathetic looks, and someone asked if he was alright. Ilya, the absolute bastard, did not bother pretending to care. He sat there with that faint, infuriating smirk curling at the corner of his mouth, eyes half-lidded and gleaming like he was replaying every filthy thing Shane had whispered to him in a hotel room two nights earlier. “Wrong pipe,” Shane managed eventually. He took a second, more careful sip, kept his gaze firmly forward, and silently begged the floor to open up and end him before the next question landed. The next morning, The Athletic ran the headline: “Work Spouses: How Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s Rivalry Became the MLH’s Most Intense Partnership.” By the time Shane was half dressed, brushing his teeth and doomscrolling in front of the hotel mirror, the internet had already done what it always did. Twitter had stripped the phrase down to its most inflammatory core and decided he was now a “work wife.” Shane stared at the screen, toothpaste foaming at the corners of his mouth, then stared at it again as if the words might rearrange themselves out of basic decency. “What the actual fuck,” he told his reflection, voice muffled around the toothbrush. It did not get better. When he reached the Amalie Arena and filtered into the Metros’ locker room for pregame, the familiar smell of tape and sweat did nothing to settle his nerves. He had barely dropped his bag when his phone buzzed in his pocket. Lily: hello wife
