  2. “You’re contracting me to join FanMail?” Shane Hollander stares at his Coach in disbelief, “FanMail.” “It’s a new initiative to have all of you interacting more with fan spaces,” Coach Wiebe sighs, “it’s not just you, it’s the whole team. Something a little more personalised for the fans and you get a little money on the side too. Can’t be so bad, eh?” Or; Shane Hollander has joined the Centaurs and is told he has to start a FanMail page to make video requests for fans. What could go wrong?

  3. Away from the rink and under a different kind of heat. The island felt like a dare. Palm fronds leaned low over white sand, the air thick with salt and sweetness, the ocean breathing in slow, blue laps. It was the kind of place that looked fake until you stepped barefoot into it and realized it was real—and that made it worse, somehow. Shane had always done better with things that hurt a little. Cold rinks. Sharp edges. Rivalries that burned hot enough to keep him upright. Ilya, apparently, did not have that problem. He was already sprawled on a lounge chair like he’d been born to tropical vacations instead of raised on ice and spite, sunglasses pushed up into his curls, skin gleaming with sweat and sun. He tipped his head when Shane came closer, smile lazy and dangerous. “Relax,” Ilya said. “Your shoulders are up by your ears.” Shane snorted and dropped his bag onto the sand. “You’re the one who booked this place.” “Together,” Ilya corrected. “We agreed. A truce.” Shane looked at him. Really looked. No gear, no boards between them, no roar of a crowd. Just Ilya, bare-chested, smug, and devastatingly at ease. Out in the open, like they’d promised. Like they’d both been terrified of. “A truce,” Shane echoed. “For one week.” Ilya grinned. “Plenty of time.” That should have been a warning. They didn’t last an hour before the rivalry crept back in, curling around their ankles like a cat that pretended not to care but absolutely did. It lived in the way Shane challenged Ilya to swim farther out. In the way Ilya beat him back to shore and laughed, breathless, water slicking down his torso. “You cheated,” Shane said. “You’re just slow,” Ilya shot back. “Age.” “I’m the same age as you.” “Details.” They lay on their towels afterward, sun beating down, the sound of waves filling the space where trash talk usually lived. Shane closed his eyes, letting the heat sink in. His skin prickled, already pinking. “You’re going to burn,” Ilya said. “I’ll live.” Ilya propped himself up on one elbow. Shane could feel his gaze like a physical thing, dragging slow and unapologetic. “I have sunscreen.” “So do I.” “Yes,” Ilya said, “but I offered.” Shane opened one eye. “You offering now?” Ilya’s smile shifted. Less lazy. More intent. “I am a generous man.” Something in Shane’s chest tightened. He sat up, grabbed his own bottle from his bag, and held it up. “I’m good.” Ilya made a little tsk sound. “Stubborn.” “Competitive.” “Sexy flaw,” Ilya said lightly, then reached out and plucked the bottle from Shane’s hand. Shane sputtered. “Hey—” “Already touching,” Ilya pointed out. He flicked the cap open with his thumb. “Too late.” Shane could have taken it back. He didn’t. He let Ilya pour a cool line of lotion into his palm instead, watched his eyes track the motion. The air shifted, thickened. “Front or back?” Ilya asked. Shane swallowed. “Back.” Ilya’s hands were warm. The contrast made Shane hiss as sunscreen spread across his shoulders, firm palms working it in. Not clinical. Not rushed. Fingers dragging, thumbs pressing into muscle like Ilya was memorizing him. Like he’d earned the right. “You’re tense,” Ilya murmured, close enough now that Shane could feel his breath. “Still think I’m going to stab you in the back?” Shane laughed, a rough sound. “You would.” “Only if you deserved it.” Ilya leaned in, just a fraction. His hands slid lower, down Shane’s spine, stopping at the small of his back. He lingered there, deliberate. Testing. Shane’s pulse kicked. “You done?” “No,” Ilya said softly. “Sides.”

Maybe airplane banner over city—” Shane, sitting curled on the couch in sweatpants, nearly choked on his tea. “No,” he said immediately. “Absolutely not. No fireworks. No banners. No announcements. I’m not letting you hard launch us into oblivion.” --------- Five times they soft launch and one time they hard launch, or Ilya is given free rein to soft launch their relationship.

  6. “Puppy!” Came Jade's happy cry as Chiron licked her face. Both of Hayden's twins lay giggling on the floor of the Ottawa locker room, a squirming puppy bouncing between them. “Can we get a puppy, Uncle Ilya?” Ruby's voice rose even louder as she spoke, eyes pleading towards Ilya. Shane heard the door slam open behind him. Hayden Pike, his best friend and beloved father, staggered to his side. Out of the corner of his eye, Shane could see him taking in the mess in front of them. “Well, shit.” Or What if Shane and Ilya's relationship was revealed to the Ottawa Centaurs before Hayden's video. It was still Hayden's fault though.

  7. “Do you want to fuck Svetlana?

    Shane dropped his phone. “What? No. Are you fucking crazy?”

    “I am not crazy,” Ilya said. “But I would like to be fucking. Maybe both of you. At once.”

    “Too bad you only have one dick then,” Shane said, incredulous.

    “My innocent sweet boy, Hollander. Never had a threesome before?”

    “I could barely handle one girl at a time,” Shane confessed. “Much less two. Because, Rozanov, I am gay.”

    +++

    Ilya and Svetlana propose a threesome for old time's sake. Shane learns that sometimes, experimentation can be very, very rewarding. An exploration of identity and desire and, ultimately, being true to yourself.

  12. I know Hayden speaks to Shane at the end of the book but there is no way Jackie didn’t help him get there. “So I have something to tell you that I have permission to tell you but you can’t tell anyone else okay?” Hayden said to his wife. Jackie turned to him on the sofa and put her arms on the back, fully showing that she was locked in to whatever information her husband was about to reveal. “Okay? Is someone hurt or in danger?” “What no!” Hayden said, eyes going wide. “No no nothing like that. It’s about Shane. He told the team something today and asked us to keep it to ourselves but he gave me permission to tell you.” Jackie nodded “Shane can trust me to keep a secret” Hayden nodded in agreement. “Yeah he knows that. And he knows I have to tell you or I’d go insane.” Jackie smiled with fondness both at her husband and at Shane for knowing him so well. She reaches out to take Hayden’s hand. “So what is it Hayd?” Hayden took a deep breath and squeezed Jackie’s hand. “Shane is gay” Jackie wished she could say this information shocked her. But the life of being a hockey wife meant a lot of time in a room full of rowdy men where she got to just observe them and notice things. She had noticed Shane. A little quieter than the rest, only ever dated one woman publicly and that lasted all of two weeks. And he never seemed that happy with Rose. She has also noticed the way he played. Specifically whenever they played Boston, he was always smiling more on those game days. And sometimes a few days after. And he played like he was on fire the whole time. It could be explained away as him delighting in facing their rivals, but she noticed the smile didn’t even fade on the days that they lost. She realized she hadn’t said anything to this big news for a couple of seconds and snapped back to it. “Oh wow.” She said, trying to play a bit surprised. “I know right?” Hayden said, as if this information was in fact a shock to him. “I can’t believe it” “Oh yeah?” Jackie asked, trying to gently prod her husband for more information. “I mean yeah. He dated Rose fucking Landry. And before that, I never told you this, but I saw his phone once or twice and he was always texting this girl named Lily. She must be from Boston because every time we played there or they played us, Shane was nowhere to be found and one time I even told him I knew he was hooking up with Lily.” This new piece of information felt like about a million things clicking into place in her head. “So wait.” Jackie said, shuffling a little closer to Hayden and putting a hand on his knee. “So every time you guys played Boston, Shane went to see Lily but kept it a secret and told no one?” She asked. Hayden looked a little confused but nodded “I mean yeah-“ “But Shane is gay, so it’s reasonable to think that maybe secret Lily wasn’t a Lily at all, that maybe it was a guy.” That thought seemed to strike Hayden and he nodded again. “Well yeah I guess that does make sense.” “Mhm” Jackie said, trying to gently lead Hayden to a conclusion she knows he doesn’t want to draw. “Hey didn’t Shane also just start a charity with Ilya Rozanov?” She asked, this seemed to confuse Hayden a little more. “I mean yeah-“ he said, and she didn’t want to give him time to confuse himself more. “The same Ilya Rozanov who just requested a trade from Boston to Ottowa?” She prompted. “How do you know that?” “I’m a hockey wife I know things, I have networks.” She explained with a wave of her hand. “I mean yeah I had heard about the trade too. Why are we talking about Ilya Rozanov right now?” Jackie put her head in her hands and groaned. “Oh my god Hayden.” “What?” Hayden asked. Jackie looked up and shuffled closer, putting her hands on Hayden’s shoulders. “Shane would secretly meet up with someone in his phone as Lily every time you played Boston. He was happy even when you lost. He is gay. He is now publicly friends with Ilya Rozanov who just left his very successful team for one in Canada that is conveniently 2 hours away from Montreal.”

  13. Shane doesn’t say he’s overwhelmed. He never does. He shows up instead—later than planned, jaw tight, movements clipped like every second is being audited. His bag lands by the door with more force than necessary. He stands there for a moment too long, as if waiting for instructions he hasn’t been given. Ilya clocks it immediately. “Hey,” he says gently, already closing the distance. “Come here.” Shane shakes his head once, sharp. “Just—give me a minute.” Ilya gives him thirty seconds. Then he takes Shane’s wrist—not tight, not demanding—and guides him further into the apartment. “Shoes off,” he says, voice calm, certain. “Jacket too.” or Ilya takes care of an overwhelmed and overstimulated Shane by letting him float away into subspace for a bit. Then he takes Shane’s wrist—not tight, not demanding—and guides him further into the apartment. “Shoes off,” he says, voice calm, certain. “Jacket too.” Shane exhales, something brittle easing. He does as he’s told. Good. Ilya takes the bag, sets it aside. He steers Shane toward the couch, presses him down with a hand on his shoulder. “Sit.” Shane sits. It’s small. It’s nothing. But it’s also everything—permission to stop managing, to stop anticipating, to stop being the one who has to decide what happens next. Ilya disappears into the kitchen and comes back with a glass of water, sets it in Shane’s hands. “Drink.” Shane does. His hands shake just a little. Ilya sits beside him, close enough that their thighs touch. He doesn’t ask questions. He doesn’t ask Shane to explain. He just starts grounding them back into the same room. “Phone,” Ilya says, holding out his hand. Shane hesitates. Then he hands it over. Ilya puts it face‑down on the table, out of reach. “Good.” Shane swallows. His shoulders slump, just barely, like a structure being allowed to fail safely. “I didn’t realize how loud it was,” Shane says finally, staring at nothing. Ilya nods. “It gets like that.” He shifts, pulls Shane gently but firmly against him, Shane’s back to Ilya’s chest. He wraps his arms around Shane’s middle, solid and warm. Shane stiffens for half a second out of habit —then melts. Ilya rests his chin on Shane’s shoulder. “You don’t have to think right now,” he murmurs. “I have you.” Shane’s breath shudders. “I don’t know what I need.” “That is okay,” Ilya says without hesitation. “I do.” He adjusts the blanket over them. Turns the lights lower. Presses a slow, steady rhythm into Shane’s side with his thumb, counting breaths Shane doesn’t realize he’s following. Minutes pass. Maybe more. Shane leans back fully now, trusting the weight behind him. “You’re good at this,” he says, voice soft, almost surprised. Ilya smiles into his hair. “You let me be.” Shane is quiet for a long moment. Then, barely audible: “Thank you.” Ilya tightens his arms, just a little. “Anytime.” Later—much later—when Shane’s thoughts have slowed and the world has shrunk back to a manageable size, Ilya asks one more thing. “Stay?” Shane doesn’t hesitate this time. “Yeah.” And for once, he doesn’t feel like he’s choosing. He feels like he’s being taken care of. Ilya doesn’t move for a long while. He waits until Shane’s breathing has evened out, until the tension has fully drained from his shoulders. Only then does he speak again. “Okay,” he says quietly. “Next thing.”

  15. Shane barely gets inside the door before Ilya is pressing him against it. So hard the frame rattles. His back hits the door, his heartbeat still pounding in his ears from the win. Adrenaline and muscles and, oh, the pride in his veins. A tangle of it, slick and humming in his veins. Ilya is there right away, hands at his jaw and then at his jacket, mouth nuzzling at his neck. Mouth wide, hungry, and hot, and whispering victory against Shane’s throat. Shane laughs— short, happy, gasping—because they won. Because the arena is still ringing in his ears, because Ilya is staring at him like he hung the fucking moon. “You have been very naughty this year.” He says it low, right by Shane’s ear. The words are a purr of heat against Shane’s skin. “Oh yeah?” Shane says, and he doesn’t know how his voice comes out so loose. His head tilts back against the door. Ilya hums. Lips brushing the column of his throat. “Very.” OR hollanov smut where Ilya unwraps and takes care of his favorite gift
