A few months ago, Shane would’ve rolled his eyes and thrown back a line about wanting to ensure all his patients were looked after and how he had a responsibility, especially to members of his own firehouse. Hell, a few months ago, maybe Shane wouldn’t have even been here in the first place.
But today, after the scare he’s had and the hours he’s spent really coming to terms with… well, everything, Shane just nods tiredly.
“I was. I was terrified actually. I haven’t left this hospital since I rolled in doing chest compressions on you because we couldn’t get your sinus rhythm back and your heart stopped.”

The saying 'this hurts me a lot more than it hurts you' was a saying Shane heard growing up when his mom would have to take him to the doctor for his yearly checkup and he would have a 'surprise' vaccination to get or when he would need stitches for a hockey related injury. His mom would always hold his hand and say, 'Shane this hurts me more than it hurts you,' and truthfully he never understood why she would say that with an actual pained look on her face as she watched the doctor give him a shot or when she would sit by his side holding his hand as the medical trainer stitched him up her eyes never leaving the needle that threaded in and out of his wound. It never made sense as to why it would hurt her more than it hurt him because it hurt a lot. Not that he ever said so. But when it came to his own pup getting hurt, Shane understood quickly what his mother meant. Or the one where Shane doesn't forgive himself until Sofia does.

Despite his enormous talent, Shane doesn't get the same opportunities Ilya does, so he doesn't end up on one of the league's best teams. But even though they don't become the league's most famous rivals, Ilya and Shane still find themselves drawn to each other.
Notes on Deafness:
Shane and his family speak American Sign Language (as is common in Canada). In this story, ASL is treated like any other language—when people who are fluent are speaking it, it will read like any other language. Shane has been deaf since birth, and his English is not perfect (as is common for many Deaf individuals). Shane's worldview and some of the particulars of his experience are based on real-life Deaf individuals, but he is not meant to represent every Deaf person.Notes on hockey:

He feels movement next to him in bed, and Shane is trying to sit up when Ilya turns to look at him. “I’ll handle it, moya lyubov,” he whispers, one hand coaxing Shane back down. He gave birth just two days ago, and the thirty hours of labor it took for Mila to finally make her grand entrance have left him sore and exhausted. Ilya has been doing his best to handle as many feedings and diaper changes as he can so Shane can rest and recover. “M’kay,” Shane mumbles, not putting up much of a fight before resting his head on his pillow again, which is a testament to how worn down he must really be. (or a soft morning with Shane and Ilya and their two-day-old daughter.)
