  1. “Uh,” Shane says stupidly, “Truth?”
Fabian bites his bottom lip, and it does something complicated to Shane’s stomach. Why do all of their friends have to be so hot? “Do you bottom or top more often?”

    -

The group chat gets together for Scott's birthday party, and things escalate.

  2. Scott lifted his eyes to take the order, and made the mistake of looking at the kid's face.

    And—stopped.

It was a stupid, total, machine-grinding-to-a-halt kind of stop, the milk pitcher hanging dumb in his hand. Because the kid was, objectively, a problem. Dark curls shoved back off his forehead like he'd done it with wet hands and given up, one already escaping to flop down again. Brown eyes that were currently very wide and aimed, with devastating sincerity, at Scott. Built—under the too-small hoodie—like something off a Soviet gymnastics poster, all that muscle packed onto five-foot-eight of pure disaster, which somehow read boyish instead of intimidating, like a golden retriever that had been to the gym and felt strongly about it. He smelled, faintly, of cedar and black pepper.

He was, in short, exactly Scott's type, head to toe, and Scott resented every inch of it instantly and on principle.

  3. This work explores the previously unseen three and a half years in the lives and the relationship of characters Scott Hunter and Kip Grady from Season 1 of the Heated Rivalry television series created by Jacob Tierney. It begins where Episode 3 ("Hunter") ends and ends with the final scene of Episode 5 ("I'll Believe in Anything"). It follows Kip's growth from smoothie barista to graduate student and beyond. It accompanies Scott on his journey as a lonely and conflicted professional hockey star who became the Game Changer he was destined to be. And it chronicles the path to sunshine for their relationship.

Season 1 of the 2025 Heated Rivalry television series is treated as canon, and this work assumes the reader is very familiar with the show and especially the Scott and Kip characters within it. A few elements are inspired by events in the book Game Changer by Rachel Reid or other books in the series, but only to the extent that it does not conflict with TV canon. There are several original characters and new roles for familiar ones.

  4. “Gloria and Carter want to come home with us after,” he says and Kip makes a pleased little sound and nods.

    “Yeah, of course.”

“Is there…” Scott doesn’t really know how to ask the question without ruining the surprise, and he wants Kip to be surprised, wants to see it on his face, that little moment of disbelief turning into excitement turning into smugness the way it usually goes when Carter wants something from Kip, not just from a man, but from Kip specifically. “Is there anything you don’t wanna do tonight?”

  5. Scott rolled back into Kip’s chest, one eye open as he squinted up at his delighted husband. Because Kip was Scott’s husband. And this was their honeymoon. “You’re happy about this, aren’t you?”

“Being serenaded by sheep?” Kip asked, as a chorus of cries went up this time. He rested his chin on Scott’s shoulder. “It’s definitely not something that we can get back home.”

Scott doesn’t often get stopped in his tracks by guys he sees. He doesn’t really ever get that birds-dancing-round-his-head, sweet-chorus-of-angels, crepuscular-rays-alighting-on-the-earth knockabout, or hasn’t really since Mike Johansson transferred into St Thomas in senior year of high school and he had, for the first time in his life, fallen in love. Unrequited, but still. That was fifteen years ago. He’s been in love since then, but he hasn’t been blindsided in a while. He’d forgotten how it feels.

  7. “We could’ve had everything,” Shane admitted softly.

The confession hurt more than he expected.

“A real relationship. A family. A future.” His eyes drifted toward the planes outside again before he exhaled slowly. “But dreams eventually end.” A small, tired smile pulled at his mouth. “And this is me waking up.”

  8. There was something wrong with Shane Hollander.

He had known it since he was young.

Most people-most kids, in general-had different hobbies and interests. Their attention drifted from one thing to another. They became fascinated with something for a few weeks, only to abandon it for the next shiny obsession that caught their eye.

Shane had never been like that.

When it came to him, there was only ever one thing: hockey.

    Obsessive.

That was the word most people used when referring to his temperament.

  15. There is nothing else in the world for Scott, usually, when he’s on his knees for Kip like this, but this time, he can practically feel Carter and Gloria’s eyes on himself. And he wants to impress them, wants them to see how well he takes care of Kip. He knows he’s good at it, and when he goes a little faster and Kip moans and gasps and puts his other hand on Scott’s shoulder, bunching the fabric of his shirt between in his fingers – he hears Carter say “oh shit” quietly and it makes him feel like he’s glowing with pride.

  17. Stepping off the elevator, Eric turned left. Hands in his pocket, his walk the easy saunter of a man who is sure which room he’s staying in.

“Aren’t you that way?” Scotty was standing in front of the elevator, pointing to the right. Which was fair, because Eric’s room was indeed at that end of the hall.

“Nope,” Eric said and kept walking.

  19. "Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.

"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."

Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.

Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.
