“I cannot believe that you invited him” He can believe it, actually. His mother invites him every year, this is just the first year he’s actually showed up. A fact which was news to Shane until he’d walked into the cottage, weekend bag slung over his shoulder, to the sight of Ilya Rozanov reaching up on his tippy toes, t-shirt riding up to expose the small of his back, helping his mom hang garland over a doorway Shane had, literally, nearly turned around and walked right back out Its Christmas and its snowing and Shane's mom's annoying (ly hot) best friend is stuck at the cottage

“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?” “Yeah.” Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.” Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?” Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?” Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?” Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.” “Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.” Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Ilya tutted. “Uhm like Father Christmas- Santa Claus, yes? Only, on New Year. Old man visits home, walks through front door, and greets children with present. Less creepy than Santa Claus.” Shane furrowed his eyebrows. “You think Santa is creepy?” “Listen to song, Shane. He sees you when you’re sleeping- knows when you’re awake..” Ilya waved a hand and scrunched up his face as he gently leaned over to inspect the small Christmas village people. “He watches like some pervert.” Shane surprises Ilya by decorating for christmas....Shane gets railed....and Ilya makes the Hollander parents cry.

Ilya’s first Christmas at home *** Yuna smiles at him, the corners of her mouth tightening with some emotion he can’t fully understand. “We just wanted you to feel at home.” Ilya looks down. His nose burns, the ribbons wrapped around the green paper swimming together in a red haze as his eyes inexplicably fill with tears. Squeezing the box so hard the paper wrinkles, tearing at the top where his thumb presses against it, he takes a deep breath, trying to find the words to explain how he wouldn’t know what that felt like. Not before Shane anyway.

“Hollander,” Ilya greeted. He was leaning over the partition of Shane's desk with a lop-sided smile on his face. “Rozanov,” Shane said pointedly. “You sound upset.” “I’m not upset.” “It is too early in the morning for you to look like you want to kill me,” Ilya pointed out. “It’s never too early for that,” Shane threw back, unnecessarily shuffling some papers around on his desk. “Do you need something?” “A pen,” Ilya shrugged, not being able to stop the dumb smile forming on his face at Shane’s reaction. or, ilya and shane are co-workers. they like each other but are oblivious idiots about it. also, it's christmas!
