“How’d it go?” Hayden asked, grinning sleepily. “You in love?” In such a panic that he didn’t think about the words, Shane replied “Fuck, yes, I think I love him” That certainly got Hayden’s attention. He sat up in bed and looked at Shane in shock. Shane debated turning back around again at the look on Hayden’s face but instead just stood there frozen. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” Or: Shane accidently comes out to Hayden post tuna melt and it goes from there Shane – November 2016 What is happening? This was bad. This was really fucking bad. Shane’s heart was racing, and it wasn’t from taking the stairs. Every fiber of him wanted to run right back up those stairs and into Ilya’s arms. To wrap himself around him and go to bed with him and wake up with him. And that was why Shane marched straight out of Ilya’s building, and didn’t stop walking until he was safely back in his hotel room. In his panic, he wasn’t careful enough about not waking Hayden. He wasn’t in the room for ten seconds before the bedside lamp was turned on. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” and then seemed to look at Shane more closely and asked “Hey, are you okay?”. Shane didn’t feel okay; in fact, he felt like he might either throw up or pass out. Slowly, he sank to the floor, back against the door, unable to process everything that had happened that day. He wasn’t sure if he was more surprised about being in love with Ilya or sort of accidentally coming out to Hayden. He was vaguely aware of movement in the room and looked up when Hayden hesitantly touched his shoulder. “Um, hey Shane, don’t freak out, okay? It’s okay, I, we’re cool and we can talk about it if you want or not” Shane thought about it and figured that now that the words were out there, he needed to talk to Hayden – he didn’t want to feel awkward every time he saw him, and his shocked brain had managed not to use Ilya’s name during his confession. “I, sorry to drop that on you I just freaked out. I, um, like guys, obviously…” “You being gay or whatever is fine by me and I won’t tell anyone, I swear” “I don’t think I am exactly, it’s complicated” “Okay, you want to talk about this guy, whoever it is? I can see how it would be difficult” This was not something that Shane was okay to talk about, even without names. “It doesn’t matter, okay? We can’t be together so there’s no point thinking about it” Hayden looked at him with a mixture of sadness and exasperation, “Shane…” Shane was unwilling to have this conversation in case he said something that was incriminating. Hayden seemed to be dealing with the idea that Shane was into guys, but he didn’t think he would handle who exactly Shane was into. “Look it’ s fine, I’m gonna have a shower, and obviously you can’t tell anyone about this” “No, I would never” With that Shane got into the shower and stared at the wall for a long while. Hayden – November 2016 Hayden had thought a lot about what Shane had told him the other night. A few things obviously made sense now – Shane’s unwillingness to date or share anything about his dating life, how closed off he was at times, why he was so secretive about meeting people. Hayden was sympathetic to all of this, but what he couldn’t figure out was what was up between Shane and the guy that Shane clearly had in his life. He’d been sneaking off to meet someone in Boston for a good while – Hayden had only realised the pattern recently, but he wouldn’t know if they were meeting at other times. He couldn’t understand the nature of the relationship either, they’d clearly been hooking up for a while and from what Shane had confessed in his panic the other night his feelings, at least, went deep. So why couldn’t they be together, especially since they’d clearly been successful at hiding whatever relationship they had so far? It didn’t make any sense. What made even less sense was a week later when there started to be press about Shane and Rose Landry. Hayden knew they’d both been at JJ’s party the other week – JJ had come into practice bragging about it the next day. Shane had refused to say anything about it to the guys, claiming that he was just respecting Rose. Hayden didn’t know what to make of it. There’s no way Shane had gotten over his mystery guy in the space of a week; Hayden had seen the look on his face in that hotel room, Shane definitely had deep feelings for the guy. That meant that either Rose was helping Shane cover or he was leading her on, neither of which felt very likely. Hayden had always felt like he knew the man very well and, while he might not have figured out all of the key facts, he knew Shane would never intentionally hurt Rose. Seeing as Shane had known Hayden for 7 years and never mentioned he liked guys, it seemed unlikely he’d told Rose in the week he’d known her, but maybe Shane’s guy was a friend of hers? Mystery guy being an actor would explain why absolute secrecy was needed. Hayden decided not to say anything for now out of respect for Shane’s wishes. Shane – January 2017

Hayden Gets The Message by KarsKars
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

He hadn’t meant to look. Honest. He really hadn’t. But Shane was in the shower, and Hayden had picked up what he’d thought was HIS phone. In his defence, the phone in question had been tossed onto the bed closest to the window, which they both knew was always his bed. Both of their phones were the same model, and neither of them had bothered to change the ringtones from the default notification. He’d picked it up without a second thought and, well, had immediately realized his mistake. But it was too late. Hayden had seen the text chain. OR Hayden starts to put the pieces together and figures things out much sooner than expected. He’d met Shane in 2008. It was the International Prospect Cup, and they’d hit it off almost instantly. Hayden had seen his raw talent and knew, even then, that he’d go far. He’d joked around with a very shy eighteen-year-old Hollander, calling him the new Crosby, who had himself once been dubbed the new Gretzky. It was a sort of passing of the generational torch, if you will. And anyone who’d ever watched Shane Hollander play hockey had to admit there was no denying he was their generation's Great One. Of course, some contested that, predicting Russia’s Ilya Rozanov as the next Great One of hockey. But Hayden knew, like the rest of the world should, that the greatest players were always Canadians. It was their sport after all; no stupid, arrogant, pain-in-the-ass Russian asshole was going to take that title. He had been ecstatic to learn they’d been drafted to the same team. Growing up in rural Ontario, Hayden had always had a soft spot for Toronto, but ultimately didn’t care where he got drafted as long as he got drafted. So, learning that a Canadian team had chosen him was an incredible moment. But learning he’d be teammates with none other than Shane Hollander had been surreal. They’d become fast friends. In the beginning, Shane had been fun, and he’d enjoyed going out with the team after games or particularly gruelling practices. Though he rarely drank, he’d still show up and have a good time. It had been on one of those nights out that Hayden had met Jackie. He’d been sipping a beer with Shane, watching Drapeau make a fool of himself on the dancefloor, when two gorgeous girls slid into their booth. A peppy little redhead had plopped herself next to Shane, while her stunning brunette friend dropped in next to Hayden. He’d bought a round for the table, then took his shot with the girl smiling up at him. Shane had been a killer wingman, politely chatting with the other girl as Hayden and Jackie drank their asses off and tore up the dance floor. An exhilarating few months later, they were Mr. and Mrs. Pike, and Hayden could hardly believe his luck. Shane had stood up with him, of course, supporting the relationship everyone else told him he’d rushed into. But Shane could see their connection; he could see how happy Hayden was and how amazing Jackie was and how perfect their life together would be. He understood and supported Hayden. “I just want you to be happy, man,” Shane had said, “if Jackie makes you happy, then fuck what anyone else says. Be happy.” And Hayden was. He had the woman of his dreams and the career of a lifetime. Nothing could touch him. They’d gone from good friends to best friends after that. Shane had been there to help put his new place back together after the housewarming party got a little out of hand. Shane had been there to celebrate the birth of all of Hayden’s kids. Shane had been there to console him when he’d traded in his sweet-ass Hummer for a Dodge Caravan. And Shane had been there countless other times. Hayden had tried to be a good friend in return. He’d repaid the favour when, after Shane bought his first place, some of the guys from the team had shown up to the housewarming with a keg. It had gotten a bit rowdy despite Shane’s best efforts, and Hayden had stuck around till morning to help him clean up the mess. Unsurprisingly, that had been the last time anyone from the team had been invited to Shane’s condo, aside from J.J. and himself. It was why he had jumped at the opportunity to be invited to Shane’s cottage the summer it was completed. He’d packed up the minivan with Jackie and their kids, then driven out to spend Canada Day long weekend at Shane’s ridiculously fancy, custom-built, lakeside cottage. Suffice to say, Hayden and Shane were best friends. Ride or die. A True bromance. Which was why he noticed when things were … off with Shane long before anyone else. It had started with a simple text message. LILY > Come over He hadn’t meant to look. LILY > Come over > will be worthwhile > 2886 Beacon > Text me. I will let you in There was a moment of silence that stretched for several minutes before another series of pings, and Hayden couldn’t help but look down at the phone he’d still been holding. LILY > You are coming, yes? > Do not make me beg > SHAAAAAAAAAANE He’d snorted at the girl’s desperation, but immediately felt bad for looking. Shane was notoriously private and probably would have been pissed if he knew Hayden had seen. Plus, at 10¢ a message, she must really like Shane. Or at the very least, really want Shane. Damn, Hayden was impressed.

She sleeps alone / My heart wants to come home / I wish I was / I wish I was / Beside you or His omega howled sadly in his chest at the thought of his mate being so far from him– never mind that they weren’t officially mated, they had been dancing around each other for the better part of 10 years and both Shane and his omega had grown clingy. And could you blame him? He had just spent another wonderful summer break with Ilya in the cottage, sleeping and fucking in their nest, spending every possible moment together. Of course Shane– and by extension, his omega– grew attached. He was finally allowed to grow attached to Ilya– finally allowed to think of his alpha as his after so long denying that. Suffice it to say that Shane was missing Ilya. Terribly.

Hayden cannot believe what he’s seeing. This huge, intimidating Russian hockey player – who has rookies quaking in their skates with one glare, who never misses an opportunity for a fight on the ice, who Hayden had once overheard during a scrum let loose a volley of swear words so fucking filthy that Hayden was actually speechless – is staring at Shane with the softest, most lovesick look on his face that you’d think Shane had hung the moon in the sky himself. And Shane is staring right back like Rozanov is the sun. - Hayden and Cliff find out. Hayden has just hung up a call with Jackie, and he’s contemplating whether to maybe jerk off or watch the Friends re-run marathon that’s currently on TV when the door to the hotel room suddenly flies open and Shane comes in. Hayden scrambles to sit up in bed, flinging his phone away guiltily as though it was already playing porn. “Hey man, you’re back early.” Shane doesn’t answer at first, turning his back on Hayden to toe off his shoes at the doorway. “Yeah, just…wanted an early night.” Hayden’s brain registers for a second that Shane is wearing a completely different outfit than the one he'd left in- he’s pretty sure he had also been wearing a jacket earlier, but now it’s nowhere to be seen, instead replaced with a slightly oversized black t-shirt. But the thought immediately slips from his mind when he hears Shane’s voice- tight and quiet, and he’s known his best friend long enough to know that means Shane is either really upset or angry about something. But Shane keeps his head down and refuses to meet Hayden’s eyes. “You alright, buddy?” Hayden asks carefully, using the same voice he uses when one of his twins is on the verge of a volcanic meltdown. “Fine. Shower,” Shane bites out, then sidesteps into the bathroom and closes the door. Shane spends an inordinately long time in the shower- long enough that Hayden starts to worry he’s going to use up the hotel’s entire hot water supply. When he finally emerges with a towel wrapped around his waist, his hair is dripping and his eyes are red-rimmed. Whether it’s because he was crying in the shower, or because he was cooking himself in boiling hot water for the last hour, Hayden is not sure. Did she hurt him? Did she break up with him? He wants to ask so badly. He knows Shane went out to meet his secret hook-up. That’s all he knows, because Shane never talks about his love life with him. With anyone. It’s kind of an unspoken rule in their friendship. They’ll talk about anything else – Shane’s parents; hockey, obviously; his cottage; his plans for the summer – but whenever anything comes up about dating or relationships, Shane will change the subject, or skilfully evade the question. And after a while, Hayden stopped asking. If Shane ever wanted to tell him, he’ll tell him. On the other hand, Hayden talks to Shane about everything – when him and Jackie had that explosive fight which stupidly started because he didn’t pick up his dirty socks off the bathroom floor, or that time the twins both had chickenpox, and Arthur wasn’t sleeping through the night yet and Hayden was so fucking tired he thought he was actually going to die. And no matter what time Hayden calls to vent, Shane always picks up, always listens, calms him down, gives him advice. Because that’s just the kind of friend he is. And now Hayden can’t even return the favour. Hayden keeps his eyes trained on the TV- he’s watched three whole episodes of Friends in the time Shane was in the bathroom - and tries to keep his voice casual and upbeat while Shane rummages around in his suitcase for a change of clothes. “JJ texted if we wanted to grab dinner? There’s this place nearby that’s supposed to have amazing pizza.” “Um, I think I’ll pass,” Shane replies softly. “Headache. I’m gonna turn in early.” “You sure? I can stay in if you want some company-,” “No. You guys go. I really just want to sleep.” When Hayden leaves the hotel room, Shane is curled up in his bed, the only part of him visible is a shock of black hair poking out from under the covers. -- Cliff curses loudly, almost tripping over a box of old skates in the third dusty storage room he’d searched in the last half an hour. It’s bad enough the team physio made him come in extra early, three whole hours before the game against Montreal, but his shoulder was still a bit messed up from when they played Pittsburgh last month and they wanted to do some dry needling before the game so he doesn’t make the injury worse. On top of everything, no one told them there was some maintenance going on in the arena, so their usual physio room had been cleared out and the massage tables are nowhere to be found. And now Cliff has been sent on some fucking scavenger hunt to help locate them. Well, the tables clearly aren’t in here, so he gives up and heads back down to go yell at the physio. At this point, he’ll lie down naked on the fucking ice to get his needling. As Cliff goes down the hallway, he passes the away team’s change room, and he decides to poke his head in to see if the tables might be in there. The room is already set up for the Voyageurs for that afternoon’s game, but it’s otherwise deserted. The tables aren’t in there either, and Cliff about to head back out when Rozanov suddenly comes around the corner into the change room. He doesn’t see Cliff right away- and Cliff has half a mind to jump out from where he is and scare the fucker to death- some payback for Rozanov’s usual antics and chirps. Then he catches sight of Rozanov’s face- and well, he looks like absolute shit. His handsome face – and even Cliff can objectively admit the guy is good looking- is withdrawn and there are dark circles under his eyes, like he barely got any sleep. Cliff watches silently as Rozanov stops in front of a stall- Shane Hollander’s stall- Cliff realises with a start as he catches sight of the nameplate. He’s carrying a nondescript black paper bag, and Cliff watches curiously as Rozanov starts to put the bag in Hollander’s stall, hesitate for a moment, then reaches inside and pulls out something. A white T-shirt.

like a lullaby by heartsopenminds
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-05
hayden had no clue why ilya fucking rozanov of all people was in shane's room when he arrived at the hospital, but thanks to his best friend's lack of filter on a hefty dose of painkillers, it doesn't take him long to find out. The hospital room door closed softly behind him as Hayden walked towards the bed. He was frowning, still trying to figure out why he'd had to wait while Ilya fucking Rozanov of all people visited Shane before him. Shane's eyes were half-lidded, glazed with a cocktail of painkillers, a dreamy smile plastered across his face. "So," Hayden started, his voice cautious. "That was... weird. Ilya Rozanov here in your hospital room. For like, ten whole minutes. What the hell was that about?" "Oh hey, Hayden. Heeeeeyyyy-den, " Shane said in a sing-song voice. "He came to check on me. Isn't he the sweetest?" Hayden stared at his best friend. "Sweetest? Shane, buddy, the doctors said you had a concussion, not a personality transplant. That was Rozanov. The guy who plays like he wants to murder us. I don't think he even has a 'sweet' setting." "Oh, pfff," Shane sighed, waving a hand dismissively. The movement was loose and uncoordinated. "That’s just his game face. Like Batman. But underneath? Total marshmallow. He was really worried about me. I wanted to hold his hands to stop them shaking so much, but he was paranoid about the nurses coming in, I could tell." Hayden pulled the visitor’s chair closer and sat down very slowly, as if making any sudden movements might worsen Shane's apparent delirium. "You... wanted to hold hands? With Rozanov? I’m gonna need a minute here." "I thought he might speak to me in Russian," Shane continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial, affectionate whisper. "It's nice when he does that. You know how his voice gets all deep and rumbly? It vibrates right in your chest. It's relaxing, like a cat purring. A really big, angry cat." "I'm not sure anything about that guy counts as relaxing," Hayden said doubtfully. "No, s'nice," Shane insisted, his brow furrowing slightly at Hayden’s lack of understanding. "Soft, like a lullaby. I could listen all day. Like the voice notes he sends. You know, the ones you make fun of because they're so long." Hayden paused. "The voice notes? From Lily, you mean." Shane rolled his eyes, a dramatic motion of annoyance. "Yes, from Lily. He sends the long voice notes when he's stressed. We talked about this." "We talked about Lily," Hayden’s voice was faint. "The girl you've been sexting for years. The one you always see when we're - " Hayden stared blankly at the wall. The pieces were suddenly fitting together in his mind, regardless of how much he didn't like the picture they were forming. "Lily... is Ilya. Your Lily is Ilya Rozanov." Shane let out a huff of laughter. "Well, yeah. You think I have two high-maintenance hockey obsessives who text me at all hours? I do not have the energy for that. I mean, sometimes I don't have the energy for one, with all the late nights and the sneaking around, " Shane continued, oblivious to Hayden's spiralling crisis. "But it's worth it. It’s actually really romantic. Like a spy movie." "A spy movie," Hayden repeated, his voice muffled by his palms. "Yeah." Shane shifted, wincing slightly, but the smile never left his face. "You know the grey hoodie he wears? The one with the bleach stain on the cuff?" "I can't say I've ever noticed." "Well that’s his 'Lily' hoodie," Shane said, his eyes sparkling with a secret he thought they already shared. "For when we have to be all stealthy. I love that hoodie. It smells like his cologne and hotel soap. It makes me think of stairwells, or service elevators, or..." Hayden looked up, horrified. "Service elevators? You’re meeting up with the captain of the Boston Raiders in service elevators?" "Well, and hotel rooms, obviously," Shane retorted. "Sometimes my place. Or his. He made us tuna melts." "Tuna melts," Hayden repeated. This was the detail that broke him, he realised afterwards. Not the sex, not the secrecy, but the fucking sandwiches. "He acts like he’s this big tough guy," Shane says dreamily. " 'I am Ilya Rozanov, I am machine' but he takes such good care of me, Hayds." Shane’s energy began to flag as the conversation drained the last of his reserves. He sank deeper into the pillows, his eyelids fluttering. "He called me, you know," Shane mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "From Moscow. After the funeral." Hayden softened at the mention of Ilya's loss. "He called you?" "Yeah. He was so sad. About his dad, about a lot of things. He told me he loved me." Hayden froze. "He said it in Russian," Shane said. "But I knew. I could feel it. He thinks he always has be alone, but he doesn't. I’m gonna marry him one day, H. We’re gonna get a house and he’s gonna make me sandwiches and we’re gonna be so boring. You'll come visit, right? You and Jackie and the kids?" "You love him," Hayden murmured. It wasn't a question. "Yeah," Shane sighed, a long, contented exhale, his eyes finally closing. "Don't tell him that though, cos we haven't said it yet. He’s my very favourite person. He likes to think he’s

An alternate take on Hayden discovering the identity of Boston Lily and meeting Ilya as Shane's boyfriend for the first time. It takes a week from the moment Shane comes out to the Montreal Metros – with quiet determination and his jaw tense – for Hayden to put two and two together. At least, he thinks he’s got the correct answer. And the correct equation to solve. “So… Lily,” he says and Shane flinches like at a jumpscare. Which isn’t great given he’s currently cradling Amber in his arms like the good uncle he is. They’ve had dinner at Hayden’s, one that Jackie insisten on to show Shane nothing has changed. Hayden has assumed that much was obvious, but given the wary glances Shane has been giving him all evening, maybe Hayden’s wife has been onto something. She’s always been the brains of the relationship. “Is that why I’ve never seen a picture?” Over the years, Hayden has developed theories about Boston Lily. He dismissed most of them. Of course she wasn’t married, Shane would never go there, he just wasn’t the type. And his relationship with Rose Landry suggested he didn’t have a problem with public spotlight on his relationship, so she probably wasn’t a celebrity either. In the end, Hayden has secretly settled on the idea that Boston Lily was a high class dominatrix who helped Shane handle the pressure of being Shane Hollander, the captain of Montreal Metros, the NHL superstar, the involuntary inspiration to many. And Hayden decided not to ask. Now, however, the answer was obvious. “Lily’s a man.” Shane is staring at him with the doe-eyed gaze of a hunted animal. The baby stirs in his arms when his grip on her tightens just a little. “Hey, man, we won’t be doing that,” Hayden says, reaching for Amber to gently pry her out of his best friend’s grip. “You don’t need to use my baby as a shield. I’m not going to be an ass about this. There’s no need to take hostages.” “Sorry.” “No worries,” Hayden bounces the baby, hoping she won’t wake up just yet. They’re both keeping their voices low. “She is, though, right? Your Lily. A guy.” Shane’s ears are burning when he nods shortly. “Are you still seeing her? Him,” Hayden corrects himself quickly. Shane seems to have lost the ability to talk, but a brief hint of a smile flashes across his features. Under his freckles, his cheeks darken with a blush. “Man, it’s been ages. Years, right?” Hayden can’t remember when he’s first noticed Shane glued to his phone and sneaking out of his hotel room, but it has been a long time ago. Now that he thinks about it, Shane’s secret rendezvous in Boston have always been a part of Shane Hollander lore. “Is it serious?” Impossibly, Shane’s cheeks turn darker still. He gives a sharp little nod. “We’ll be playing Boston in what, two weeks? You must be looking forward to it.” Shane opens his mouth, but then he closes it again. His face does something indecipherable. He shrugs. “I think you should introduce us,” Hayden barrels through. “I’m your best friend. I should make sure this guy is worthy of you.” Shane actually laughs at that. “I don’t think— Actually, I think he won’t be in Boston.” “Liar. He’s always in Boston.” Hayden gives Shane a suspicious look. “Are you worried I won’t approve, is that it? Is he old?” He loves seeing Shane genuinely amused. “He’s definitely not old. Same age.” “He’s not out, then,” Hayden guesses. “I can be discreet!” It’s true. He’s never told anyone about his suspicion that Shane’s seeing a dominatrix. “I’d have to ask him. I’m not sure he’d be—“ Shane shakes his head. “But he really doesn’t live in Boston anymore.” “Oh.” Hayden feels his heart break a little. When he considers it now, Shane never got to see his Boston Lily all that often. It seemed much more frequent the way he’s been glued to his phone all these years, but in reality it was only a few times a year. To think the man has moved somewhere further away? Ah, Hayden ached for his friend. “Does he live in any of the cities we’ll be playing? Long distance is harsh, man.” Shane takes a breath. “He— He lives a bit closer now. I get to— It’s not that bad anymore,” he smiles a little. “Maybe we could— If he’d want to, which I’m really not sure— Maybe we could have a dinner. Sometime. If schedules allow. His isn’t much better than ours.” Hayden’s curious about this man now. “What does he do?” Shane only shakes his head. “I’ll have to talk to him first. No promises.” *** Two weeks later, Hayden and Jackie received an invitation to have dinner at— Shane’s cottage near Ottawa. “It’s more convenient for everyone, trust me,” Shane assured him. “And it’d be easier for you to leave than if we visited you. If you don’t like him.”

how many hockey players does it take to make a meal? by forever_er
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-04
Hayden kisses Jackie on the cheek, then peers over Shane’s shoulder at the batter. “Is it supposed to be that lumpy, man?” He asks it so innocently, like maybe it is supposed to be lumpy. Like maybe he just doesn’t know what batter is supposed to look like. Shane supposes he probably doesn’t. He’s never seen Hayden make anything more complicated than a protein shake. Shane hangs his head. “No.” Hayden laughs, Jackie laughs, and the kids clamber all over him to get a peek at the lumpy mixture. “That looks yucky,” Ruby observes with an air of wisdom from where she has managed to climb onto Shane’s back. “I don’t want to eat that,” her twin agrees from her mirrored position on Hayden. Jackie looks at Shane pityingly. “Shane, sweetie, I’m sure Ilya will be happy with anything you plan for him. Does it have to be a meal?” Shane glowers. “Yes.” --- Or, the one where Shane Hollander gets it in his head that he has to make a traditional Russian dish for Ilya as a grand romantic gesture
