“Or Mexico,” Ilya says. “So you can be so boring and not drink tequila.” He expects Shane to maybe laugh, or get bossy and tell Ilya to get on with it. He does not expect him to go stock- still in his arms and fall completely silent. “Shane?” “I – I,” Shane stammers. “I don’t want to go there.” He doesn’t sound happy any more, at all. He sounds scared and confused. Ilya’s mind has started to race but he forces his voice to stay calm. He has only heard Shane mention Mexico twice, once to say his parents were going there on holiday. Once when Ilya asked about other men Shane’s been with. --- Ilya and Shane talk about Shane's encounter with another guy that time in Mexico. Shane doesn't have good memories. Ilya takes care of him.

Shane doesn’t respond right away, he just looks at him for a moment longer, before he nods back, mouth curving into a faint smile. A sad smile that Ilya didn’t expect. He breaks the eye contract, turning his face to the side as he starts blinking hard, like he’s trying to force something back. And oh. Ilya’s chest constricts sharply when he realises what the other’s doing. Shane is doing it again. Hiding his feelings before they can spill over. Stopping himself from crying. It’s an odd habit Ilya has noticed from the very beginning, the fact that Shane never truly lets his tears fall. Doesn’t matter how heavy the shine around his eyes becomes, they’re always swallowed back inside. ___________ Wherein Ilya comforts Shane after stupidly proposing the idea to marry Svetlana for a citizenship.

"His hobbies were hockey (which was also his job, so didn’t count), clubbing (which he did less now, in favour of Shane), and sex. It wasn’t directly homework, more like a challenge. Find something that brings you joy, that you can do on your own. Or, in the least, without having to involve Shane. What do people even do in their free time?" Or 5 times Ilya tried to find a hobby that fits him, and one time he succeeded.

"Sorry. Just realized something just now.," Ilya laughs. "What?" "Loons," Ilya says and laughs again. "Loons?" Yuna repeats confused. "When I went to the cottage last summer Shane made fun of me because I never heard the loon call before. I was so scared. I called it stupid canadian wolf bird," Yuna lets out a little laugh, Ilya continues - "I just realized that these ducks on my baby blanket, they look like..." "Loons," Yuna finishes with smile tugging on her lips. "Yes. Loons. Shane will make fun of me," Ilya groans but not maliciously. He takes the blanket out of Yuna's hands and brings it to his face, trying to see if it still smells like home, like his mom. But the smell was gone and his heart lurches. (...) "Tell me the stories. All of them." *** Or: Ilya has the flu when he recieves a package from Svetlana containing his childhood memorabilia from Russia. Mother son duo Ilya Rozanov and Yuna Hollander strikes again ❤

The first time Ilya coughed up a flower, he was kneeling over a toilet in the penthouse of the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, for entirely the wrong fucking reason to be kneeling over a toilet in Vegas. There was no point in trying to pretend it wasn’t happening. He wasn’t an idiot. Hadn’t he seen his own mother waste away, coughing up clumps of clean white chamomile stained shocking scarlet? Hadn’t he known, on some level, that he was fated to follow in her footsteps one day, to throw his entire heart and soul into loving a person who would never — could never — love him back? No, Ilya knew what this was. He also knew he’d never set foot on the ice again if anyone found out. Blindly, he reached for the toilet paper, wiped his mouth, and then flushed the whole thing. Petals, too. He didn’t want to know what kind they were. Pizdets. It should’ve been a fucking maple leaf. ❁ ❆ ❁ ❆ ❁ the Hanahaki AU, in which Ilya loves Shane Hollander’s stupid face so much it makes him sick (literally)

An Interview with the Hollanders by aurora_chiroptera
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-05
It's time to refresh the fluff pieces about NHL players to fill out sports programming. A new spin has added in interviews with the player's family. Ilya doesn’t have many options, but decides maybe Shane wouldn't mind sharing. Set a couple years into Ilya playing for Ottawa. “We want to make a new video for you, now that you’ve moved to the Centaurs,” the sports media producer was addressing Ilya, but was looking at his agent. “Something a little more grown up, though still keeping your brand.” Ilya was sick of his brand. He wished desperately that he could bring Yuna to these meetings; he'd begun to trust her opinions at least as much as his agent's. But he wouldn’t know how to explain her presence, so he muddled through. “-capture the work you do with your charity, as well as your new house, your fewer cars...” the producer’s eyes flicked to him briefly, as if some part of him didn’t believe those were Ilya's choices. They certainly weren’t “on brand.” “I think it’s a great idea,” his agent said, her professional smile in place as always. “We don’t want anyone to forget about Ilya Rozanov.” Ilya gave a short laugh, crossing his arms. “I am not going to let them.” “Wonderful! Now there is one part I wanted to run by you right away, because it might take some doing to line up.” The producer passed a few papers over. Ilya barely glanced at them. “We’ve been doing some snippets with player’s families in our recent profiles. And I was hoping we could do the same for you?” Now the man was staring intently at Ilya. Under those eyes, Ilya locked down anything his face wanted to do. Better to keep it blank, as his heart ached. What family could he offer? His mother was dead. He was doing a great job at never speaking to his brother again. He couldn’t share Shane, the only person who felt like home. Svetlana wouldn’t want the attention, given the assumptions that would be made and her experiences with her father’s fame. He had to look away from the producer, blinking at the big windows that looked out onto more tall buildings. He wished for Yuna again, the way that Shane described how she could see through bullshit and get what was best. To stand up to these people who just wanted to make money off him so that at least he got the same back in return. An idea started to form: Yuna, and David too with his quiet supportive presence. Ilya started to smile, turning back to the fancy business man. He straightened, leaning his elbows against the table. “I don’t believe it will be as hard as you think. Can get two things done at once, in fact.” The puzzled look that grew into surprise was something Ilya enjoyed greatly. He loved to be able to surprise and shock - even in a business meeting. . “You told them to interview my parents for your family segment?” Shane’s face scrunched in confusion in the light from his phone screen, but showed none of the panic Ilya had been afraid of. “Yes, and it’s fine because I would know them. Yuna runs the foundation named after my mother. Is sweet story,” Ilya said, needing Shane to know he’d thought this through, he wasn’t going to endanger the plan. “I got to know her, she took me under her wing, invited me home for dinner so I met David. I am like second son.” Ilya grinned his wickedest smile. “Favorite son even.” “Stop trying to steal my parents,” Shane scolded, but his face was split with its own smile. “Very rude behavior, you need to do better if you want to be Canadian.” “Yes, yes.” Ilya gazed at his phone screen and then sighed dramatically. “I wish you were here.” “Same. Very rude of you being told to come to Montreal while I’m away,” Shane said, shifting against hotel room pillows. “Ah, rude, rude, I am being so rude,” Ilya rolled his eyes. He leaned against the headboard in Shane’s bedroom, wearing one of Shane’s sweatshirts. He’d probably sleep with Shane’s pillow tonight once the call was over. “You cannot train me not to be asshole, so you must still like it.” “Mhm,” was Shane’s response to that. It was really unfair that the light from the screen seemed to highlight his freckles. Ily slid down in the bed, getting more comfortable. “You have room to yourself, yes?” Shane shifted as well, propping himself up now. “I sure do. Do you have some suggestions of what I should do with that privacy?” “A couple. Let us start with you taking shirt off.” --- The camera crew had set up in the living room, as Yuna had directed them. With David in the kitchen making coffee and tea for everyone, Yuna approached the producer. “You want to do just the piece about Ilya today?” The man, Jake, nodded. “We want a different background between this and the one for Shane. Somewhere in Montreal is what we’re currently thinking.” “That makes sense,” Yuna said, and it sort of did. The man had a vision and he wasn’t going to let this hiccup stop that. She wondered if he would have really traveled to Russia if that’s what it took to get Ilya’s story. “What format are we working with?” Jake gave a half smile she didn't believe. “That’s right, you’re probably old hat at things like this.” “When your son is as talented as mine, you get used to it.” Yuna knew her pride for Shane came through without her trying.

“You think those stretches actually do anything?” Summers had appeared beside him, the sound of his skates muffled under the blood rushing through Ilya’s ears– and elsewhere– as he stole another glance at Shane. “I don’t do them and I am better than him, so no. Or maybe they do help and I could be best hockey player ever.” “Mm. Hey, if he wants to put himself in that position it’s on him, I guess. I’m not gonna complain about the show.” Ilya froze, turning himself on the ice to face Summers properly. “The… show?” *or* Boston's new rookie has the hots for Shane. Ilya does not cope well.

“Sub thing is your thing, Hollander,” Ilya reminds him. Slowly, Shane argues, “Actually, I don’t think it is. I mean, yeah, that part is my thing. But I think you like it, too.” “Always like sex with you.” “Not the sex. Or – yeah, of course it’s the sex too. But I think it’s for reasons other than just the sex.” A chuckle bubbles up out of Ilya, and it dislodges the lump in his throat just a little. “Always so many words and you make no sense.” Laughing too, Shane explains, “What I mean is, the whole being a dom, thing. I think it’s good for you, too, and not just because the sex is fun. I think it settles you, in the same way it settles me.” On the anniversary of his father's death Ilya is feeling unsteady; Shane has an idea.

the montreal vs boston game by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-05
When Shane collides with Cliff Marlow during the Montreal vs Boston game in April of 2017, Ilya has to get through the evening not knowing how he's doing. He eventually confides in his roommate Cliff, who subsequently invites himself onto Ilya's trip to the hospital the next morning.
“Ask,” Ilya said flatly, trying not to admit to himself that he probably knew what he was about to be asked.
“What is your relationship with Shane Hollander?” Marlow asked.
He didn’t ask ‘are you and Shane Hollander in a relationship?’. If he asked that, Ilya might have laughed and told him everything. As it was, he considered lying. He was pretty sure that at this point, Marlow would believe whatever Ilya told him. It was apparently clear to Marlow that something was different about Shane and Ilya, so if Ilya told him they were friends and that Shane had been reaching out to him about his father, Marlow would believe him. It technically wasn’t untrue.
It also wasn’t covering the part where they’d been fucking since they were nineteen years old.

"Ilya!" Rose smiled when she found him stirring a pot on the stove. "Rose," Ilya was smiling himself and was ready to tell her about his newest Idiot Classmate story. The words died on his tongue when he saw Rose was with someone. This was an unusual development for many reasons, but Ilya couldn't focus on any of them when all he could see was the most beautiful man he'd ever seen in his life. "Ah.... hello," he said instead, and shot Rose a confused looked before turning to the man again. "Hi," he said. or: Ilya, Rose, and Svetlana are roommates and Rose brings Shane home one day. Ilya yearns.

punchline /ˈpʌn(t)ʃlʌɪn/ noun the final phrase or sentence of a joke or story, providing the humour or some other crucial element. - - - Ilya is— he’s allowed to love Shane out loud now. Because he does. He loves his husband. Adores him with every staccato beat of his heart so surely, so intently, that he’s positive that if he were to be hooked up to a polygraph machine and be asked if he loves Shane Hollander, the shape of his pulse as he answers “yes” would coincide with the rhythm of Shane’s bashful laughter anytime Ilya tells him that his freckles are stunning. - It’s funny, though. He can almost see Irina’s brand of humor slip through the cracks, like sunlight peeking past the gaps in their blackout curtains. He can almost hear her laugh. Gone as she is, she lingers and clings to him like cigarette smoke. Ilya, Shane, freckles, fate, and his mama. Alternatively titled: the stars outside of Moscow

Shane had made a joke, a passing quip, that if only they could somehow defy biology and reproduce naturally, that their child would be an unstoppable force of a hockey player. Hereditary. Genetic. Those were the words he’d used. Ilya knew what they meant. Or: Ilya thinks about what may have been passed onto him from his parents, and Shane comforts him. Ilya inhaled a shaky breath. He was, perhaps, overthinking. But also maybe he wasn’t. It had been an innocent, playful conversation about kids. Shane and him often spoke of their hypothetical children, joyfully imaging their lives post-hockey. They weren’t quite there yet, but it was something that, for a while, had been definitely mapped out in their future. So why was he breathing like the room was going to run out of oxygen? “Ilya?” Shane rested a careful hand on Ilya’s thigh. They were sat outside, the evening chill only just beginning to settle on their skin. The fire Shane had made was still flickering, though, casting a warm orange glow upon both men. “M’fine.” Ilya’s words were stilted, decidedly un-fine as he choked them out. He puffed out his cheeks, exhaling again, slower this time, furiously swiping at his eyes which were beginning to prickle with the threat of tears. He would not cry about this. “Come here,” Shane murmured, pulled Ilya sideways. He was like putty, folding immediately and nestling his head in Shane’s lap. It was warm, safe as Shane interlaced his fingers through Ilya’s hair. His other hand ran up and down Ilya’s arm, over the goosebumps that had raised the skin on his biceps. He sniffed once, then again. Blinked. Let his eyes lose focus as he watched the flames licking the sides of the fire-pit. “Is stupid,” Ilya muttered. “No.” “Da.” “What is it? You don’t… want kids?” Shane asked carefully, his voice measured. Ilya could tell, though, from years of hearing Shane’s voice in every capacity, that it was tinged with fear, fear of the answer. Ilya’s sure Shane knows that’s not the case; they spoke about kids often. Ilya loved kids, was great with them, and Shane knows that. He huffed out a laugh. Swiped at his eyes again. Nudged his head further into Shane’s lap, let Shane’s hand tighten against his scalp. He brought his other hand up and pressed it against Ilya’s forehead. Shane knew that always grounded him for some reason, having the pressure on his head. Stopped the noise somewhat. “When we say we adopt - of course. That is okay. I want that.” He hears Shane exhale, feels him relax slightly. “But when you say…” his English seemed to fail him. It always seemed to when he got like this. He shut his eyes, sighing with frustration. Shane had made a joke, a passing quip, that if only they could somehow defy biology and reproduce naturally, that their child would be an unstoppable force of a hockey player. Hereditary. Genetic. Those were the words he’d used. Ilya knew what they meant. “Take your time.” Shane’s hands wander back into Ilya’s hair, more gentle than the earlier pressure. “About our child being best hockey player. Genetics. DNA. Heredit–” He groans in frustration again. “Hereditary,” Shane finishes off softly. “Da. That.” Ilya’s hand reached up and he wraps his fingers around Shane’s wrist. “I was thinking. I am glad we cannot have baby. Together.” Shane’s confusion is palpable even without Ilya being able to see his face. He liked this about Shane. He liked being able to explain things to him in a way that made sense, because it made things make more sense in his own head, too. Shane just hums, urging Ilya to continue. “We know I am depressed, yes?” Shane’s fingers curl into his hair. “Like my mother. Maybe not same, exactly. But similar. Probably… hereditary.” He says the word slowly, testing it on his tongue. He hates the way his accent wraps around the syllables. He wishes Shane knew Russian, fluently. He wishes that he could ramble away, go off on tangents, not have to think everything through in both Russian and then English. He wishes he could speak perfect English. Perfect accent like Shane when he speaks French. Perfect Shane and his perfect genetics. He wishes he didn’t get wound up like this. He spirals so easily these days. He wishes he wasn’t so depressed. He wishes his mother hadn’t been depressed. Stop fucking spiralling. He feels his heart rate pick up again, hears his breathing go shallow. “Ilya.” Shane’s voice is grounding. It’s stern, without being unkind. He inhales again, deeply, his fingers pressing more into Shane’s wrist. “Sorry.” His voice is thick, and his mouth feels dry. Shane presses his hand against Ilya’s head again, and he leans into the pressure. “We’re managing it, though.” Shane’s voice is quiet as he cuts through the easing tension that hangs in the air. “Together.” “Yes.” Ilya pauses before speaking again. “Dementia is also hereditary,” He lets his words sit between them, hears Shane exhale as the other shoe drops. “That’s what you’re worried about?” Ilya lifts his hand in a shrug. “Yes, Shane. I think that is something anyone would worry about, no?” He doesn’t mean to sound like an asshole, especially not to Shane. “Okay, asshole.” Shane’s voice doesn’t hold any venom, only fondness, a little sad, even. Ilya almost smirks. They sit in silence for a moment, Shane carding his hands through Ilya’s curls, the crackle of the fire the only thing filling the absence of words for a moment. He speaks again.

Ilya allows himself to bask in this new, peaceful reality they are building for themselves, where they can exist in between breaths, where their hearbeats synchronize and do the talking instead of fast hands and impatient bodies, desperate for connection and release. This could be Ilya’s safe haven, if he let it. The one place where the storm finally quiets down. The thought terrifies him as much as it ends something deep and raw inside of him.
