“What if I forget… everything?” Ilya swallowed hard. “I can’t forget you. I can’t forget us. I don’t think I could - ” “Nothing is happening tonight,” Shane reassured, "And if things ever get hard… you won’t go through it alone.” After a rough evening triggered by fears of Alzheimer’s, Ilya spirals in the only way he knows how - by skating harder. Shane makes sure he never has to face that fear alone by showing him that some memories are made to be shared.

Ilya allows himself to bask in this new, peaceful reality they are building for themselves, where they can exist in between breaths, where their hearbeats synchronize and do the talking instead of fast hands and impatient bodies, desperate for connection and release. This could be Ilya’s safe haven, if he let it. The one place where the storm finally quiets down. The thought terrifies him as much as it ends something deep and raw inside of him.

Ilya’s not taken one step inside the cottage (The cottage) and he’s already struggling to take it all in. Nothing about the outside of the “cottage” actually betrays what’s waiting for him inside, and if it weren’t for Shane blocking the exit as he stands there with the bags, he’d take a step out to double-check the door. Or the calendar. Because the living room looks like a department store exploded its entire Christmas stock in there. There are fairy lights, stockings, tinsel, and garlands, but the focal point of the room is the sizable Christmas tree that stands right by the fireplace. With no decorations.
