  1. Ilya had not expected the way Shane's parents' cared for Shane to ever extend to him. Except, they kept trying to do exactly that. Shane said it was just them. Being them. So when they casually mentioned that he was family now… Ilya wanted to believe them. He did not know how to be in a family, though. He didn’t think his was ever functional enough to count as an experience of a real family. Could he count the years with just his mother? Were the two of them enough to make up a family? He wasn't sure. Ilya just knew, he did not want to get it wrong with Shane. Or Shane’s family. And so he had to go when they called.

Ilya tries to soft-launch the idea of retirement to Shane. Or: “Don’t have panic attack,” he starts with a squeeze of his fingers around his, which is probably a bad place to do that, the starting. He makes an effort to speak faster, “After we win Cup, I quit.” There. “Quit what?” Shane searches his eyes, bouncing between left and right and back. Ilya can’t help but laugh at his husband, as if the concept of ‘quitting’ and ‘hockey’ in the same sentence has never occurred to him before. It probably hasn’t. While he takes a deep inhale, Ilya adjusts his hold on the bag of ice on his angry, swollen knee that is in the middle of a suicide mission in protest of Ilya playing a professional sport in his late thirties. “Hockey.”

  8. “Ilya?” Shane’s hand crept into his hair gently, soft and searching. Ilya bit his lip, trying not to make a sound. It was almost impossible not to melt into the hair running soothingly through his curls, to turn his head to take in his Shane’s beautiful face in person after almost a month apart. Almost. Shane’s hand pulled away after a beat. Ilya heard him sigh, and then blessedly, his weight on the bed behind him rose up. He didn’t say anything as he left the room. Ilya had succeeded in pretending. He wished he could feel anything at all about it.

  11. "биполярное расстройство." Shane was quiet for a moment, ticking through the words he had learned and picked up over the years. As Ilya suspected, this was not one of them. Inevitably he asked, "what does it mean?" It was Ilya's turn to be quiet. Or a continuation of Ilya getting mental health treatment after the Long Game ends that nobody asked for and him coming to terms with being diagnosed with bipolar 2.

  12. Ilya rubbed his thumb across Shane’s hand. “Thank you for sharing that with me. I know it was not easy.” Shane scoffed, “No shit.” Ilya flicked at him playfully. “Shut up. I am trying to be comforting.” Shane peeked at Ilya from under his arm just to glare at him. Shane was glad Ilya wasn’t being careful with him or anything–that would have just made him feel worse. Ilya was just being Ilya, and Shane needed that. Or, Shane Hollander has OCD. It's frustrating, scary, and difficult, but Ilya is there for him every step of the way.
