  1. Hollander’s face flashed in his mind, once again, as he took that glance backward that cost him the game, and almost his life. Before Marlowe had reached him, Hollander’s expression was pure triumph, a beaming smile directed towards Ilya that made his heart clench. This injury would likely prevent Hollander from playing the rest of the season, which would be devastating for both of them. Ilya could only hope that the rest of this season was all that Hollander would lose. Some outcomes could be much worse. Ilya couldn’t live in a world without Hollander. He wouldn’t. Ilya couldn’t even entertain that thought without getting nauseous. He took deep breaths in and out, leaning his head on the wall behind him. Slowly, his breathing began to even out as he drifted into a fitful sleep. OR Rozanov has glimpses of different lives with Hollander and realizes he would love Shane again and again.

When Shane lets himself think about what it might be like at All Stars, there's a blurry gap where he's standing. Ilya will be wearing something stylish and sexy — probably a shiny shirt that makes Shane want to grab him and never let go. There's nothing Shane owns that fits in that category. But Reebok and Rolex have both had him work with stylists for appearances in the past. He pulls up the photos of those events, and flips through the photos. He sends them to Rose. Which of these is better? She replies to the Rolex photo with six exclamation marks. Shane Hollander's five rules of how to not look gay (and how he breaks them for Ilya Rozanov) + one time he doesn't have to.

He knows Ilya is concussed, and probably doesn’t even know what he’s saying, but the look in his eyes is so tender, so genuine, and Shane can’t help but get lost in it. - What if Ilya was the one injured in Episode 5?

  5. There are footsteps outside, a nurse probably, so Ilya readies himself for goodbye. It’s too soon. Too soon. How am I meant to leave him here? Bruised, without wrapping him up in that navy weighted blanket he likes. Without feeding him his stupid, regimented rabbit diet and his ginger ale? Without teasing him about his neatness habits and about the singular pass he missed in that game we played against each other years ago? Without kissing him all over–his cheeks, his lips, his eyelids, across his chest, and the curve of his spine. His scapula, where his wings must be hiding. Angel Hollander. Boring Hollander. Beautiful Hollander. That’s all he is, beautiful. Ilya’s chest feels full to bursting. If his heart were a machine, it would destroy him, and then the world, with love. OR, Shane gets hurt on the ice. Ilya does not take it well. He thinks, and thinks, and thinks.

  6. So, Shane was maybe-sort-of dating a Boston Raiders fan? Was that why all the secrecy? If Shane was anyone else, Hayden would think it was overkill, but the guy had gone into tailspins over things that would get him less ribbing in the locker room. Still seemed extreme that he wouldn't even admit she existed, but what did Hayden know? It made as much sense as any other theory he'd ever come up with. In which Hayden reaches out to Boston Lily about Shane's condition after he goes down on the ice. Despite his curiosity, he's determined not to pry... But things come out all the same.

  7. ”Ilya!” Shane was lying in a hospital bed, the sun from the open blinds making him glow almost as much as the smile on his face did. ”Mom, dad, it’s Ilya!” ”We can see that”, Mr. Hollander said. ”For whatever reason”, Mrs. Hollander said. // Or, Shane had no inhibitions and multiple visitors.

  8. David loves hockey, he does, he just doesn’t love it the way Yuna and Shane do, in that all- consuming, world-defining way of theirs that binds the two of them together tighter than just blood. Sometimes, David feels like he’s missing out. Mostly, though, he’s glad they have something to share, something that’s uniquely theirs. David doesn’t have something like that with Shane. He loves Shane, he really does, loves him more than breathing, but… Shane knows that Yuna loves him because they speak hockey to each other and understand each other perfectly. David should be able to keep up with them —he played hockey at McGill—but he can’t, somehow, because his relationship with hockey is fundamentally different. For Yuna, hockey is as intrinsic to her as her Japanese heritage: something deep inside her, tied to ideas like belonging and identity. For Shane, it’s much the same. For David, hockey is a sport he was good enough at that he kept playing it until he couldn't play it anymore, and then he did something else. When Shane is three, Yuna buys him skates. “Isn’t it a little early?” David asks. Yuna shakes her head. “You’ve got to start them early,” she says, unlacing the skates, “so that skating is as natural as walking.” David wants to ask why any of that is necessary, but he doesn’t, because he knows why, even if he doesn’t understand it. Because Yuna loves hockey with her whole self. In those early days, David finds himself praying to a God he hasn’t believed in since childhood that Shane will love hockey like Yuna does, because David’s pretty sure it would break her heart if Shane saw hockey the same way David did, through unromantic eyes. His prayers are answered. Hockey is everything to Shane; he loves it with his whole self. He is a difficult kid, or maybe David and Yuna are just unpracticed parents. Shane is particular. He cries a lot, and he fusses over everything, and he doesn’t have any friends because he doesn’t like talking about anything but hockey, doesn’t like doing anything but hockey. And Yuna is happy to indulge him, and David is happy to indulge her. So Shane heads down the same path David was on, some twenty years before, only the world has changed a lot since then. Things are a lot less private. Strangers have opinions on Shane’s style of play and make predictions about where he’ll fall in the draft. Shane is a child. He should be playing Grounders with his friends, laughing and smiling until his face hurts. He should have friends. Instead, he has teammates and coaches and spectators and tag-alongs and rivals, and David doesn’t think any of it is very healthy at all, actually. Shane melts down all the time, over everything. He doesn’t want to eat dinner. He doesn’t want to have a bath. He doesn’t want practise to be over. He doesn’t want to miss a game. He doesn’t want new shin pads. He doesn’t want to go to school early. He doesn’t want to go to school at all. Surely, this behaviour isn’t normal. Surely, David and Yuna aren’t just failing at every turn. Surely there’s a reason why Shane is so… impossible. Why the world seems to stymie him. “I think Shane might be autistic,” one of Shane’s teachers says at Parent-Teacher night, and David doesn’t know what that is, but he’s filled with relief that there’s a word for what they are struggling with, that there are families like theirs out there, children like Shane; that they aren’t alone. Yuna doesn’t see it that way. David should’ve known she wouldn’t. “Don’t tell me what my son is,” she says, angry in the way that she never is. “There’s nothing wrong with him.” But there is something… maybe not wrong with Shane, but different. David tries to bring it up to Yuna, but she shuts it down every time. “How would you know?” she says, with that same anger. “You’re never here. Don’t tell me what my son is.” Yuna’s son. Like David is nothing to Shane, nothing to either of them, intruding on the two of them. Sometimes, at practises, other parents ask David which kid is his, and they are always surprised when the answer is Shane. He must take after his mother, they say, which is their way of saying that he doesn’t look white. “Our son is hurting!”

  9. There’s a kind of ringing starting up in Shane’s ears. He’s spent the last four days replaying parts of his conversation with Ilya in the hospital over and over in his head — mostly Ilya’s explanation of the plan, and the pit of dread that opened up inside him when Ilya said he’d outed them — and he’s just considering now what Ilya had actually said to him: I told them that I am in love with you.

  15. They sat in silence for a few seconds and watched the surf rolling in and out, in and out. Shane eased one knee up, resting his arm across it, watching Ilya out of the corner of his eye with infinite patience. “You wanna talk about it?” he asked, voice soft enough that the wind almost stole it. He did want to talk. His chest was full of words. Too full. But the idea of opening all that up? Of watching Shane recoil, or worse, watching him care? It was unbearable. The thought of being comforted by Shane, of feeling that warmth and knowing he couldn’t keep it, nearly crushed him. Ilya kept his eyes on the water, jaw tight. Shane reached out slowly and carefully and let the tip of one finger trace the outside of Ilya’s forearm. Just a whisper of contact. A question, not a demand. Ilya looked at him. Shane gave a small tilt of his hand, beckoning him closer. “Come here.” **** A deviation from the All-Star weekend in Tampa: Instead of finding Shane on the bench, it’s Ilya alone with his ghosts and falling apart in ways he never lets anyone see. Until Shane sits beside him. The tide is ceaseless and the night is heavy. Canon diverges; feelings don't.

"How about you tell me everything that’s on your mind but in Russian? I won’t understand but maybe it’ll help?” Ilya never speaks his mind in English, not really. Besides, feelings don’t really have a place in this dance they’ve been doing for years. Shane discovered that easily enough on the couch in Ilya’s house, flayed open under his gaze by a single utterance of his first name. He bolted like a spooked horse before the afterglow could even set in. But God, what if Shane could finally get a real glimpse into it? To see what Ilya won’t tell him, can’t tell him? The emotions he keeps buried so deep under the Hollanders and that asshole persona? Before he can think better of it, Shane pulls up his Google Translate app. or, a re-imagining of the phone call confession in episode 5

  18. There’s Lily, Shane’s Boston girl, but Hayden has no idea her number, where she lives, or what she looks like. She’ll have no way of finding Shane, of being there when he wakes up high and afraid, because he never did well with being out of control. Lily won’t be there. His parents won’t be there. It’s the easiest decision he’s ever made. Hayden skates off the rink, barely pausing as he starts stripping off his gear. Coach surges forward, lips curled up with some order to get back out there, no doubt. He doesn’t give him the chance, “I’m not leaving him. I go where he goes.” And that’s that. - Or, Shane doesn’t wake up so easily and Hayden Pike somehow ends up taking care of Ilya Rozanov.
