Warm hands suddenly encased his, pulling them away from his shirt collar and back down onto the table. Shane risked a glance at Ilya and saw only concern and confusion on his face, but he couldn’t keep looking at him directly, couldn’t look him in the eye. Couldn’t let Ilya see him lose it like this, in public, all because the shirt felt wrong. Because it felt too much like being five and ripping hand-knitted jumpers from his body because they hurt. Like needing seams in his socks to sit a certain way. Like a childhood spent tearfully pulling clothes off his body until his parents figured out what fabrics he could tolerate. It felt like being seven and unable to explain to teachers why the other children didn’t like him, why he hid under the tables when the classroom was too noisy.

“Teammates,” Taylor echoed, his gaze drifting. Slowly, deliberately, to the ring on Ilya’s left hand. He did not look away immediately. He let the silence stretch until it became noticeable.
Shane felt the first flicker of unease then—not jealousy, not yet, but something colder. A sense of being assessed.

“Hey,” Shane offered as Rozanov matched his crouch.
“Mmm.”
Shane tried again: “Good luck today.”
Rozanov rolled his eyes. “Won’t need luck.”
Before Shane could inform him that what he’d said was just basic good manners, the puck dropped and Rozanov picked it up.

"What's happening?" asks the lone Raiders fan that Shane has found himself next to, a young woman with St. Simone on the back of her black and gold jersey.
Her friend, a handsome woman in Metros' blues, explains, "Une malédiction. A curse." Her Québécois accent lifts the ends of her sentences into a lilting melody.
"Oh." The Raiders fan frowns, concerned. "Does someone have it out for Hollander? Shouldn't sporting arenas be protected against that?"
Her friend laughs. "It's Centre Bell itself who has it out for Hollander. You've never heard the story about the TD Garden trying to eat Magic Johnson?"
Or; The Bell Centre carries a hundred years of hockey and all of its grudges. Ilya must traverse its depths to save Shane.

“Can you speak?” Ilya asks, voice soft and careful. He keeps combing his fingers through Shane’s hair. Shane opens his mouth, tries to produce a word, snaps his mouth closed as more tears rush to his eyes. “Okay, okay,” Ilya moves closer, kissing Shane’s cheek, his nose, his mouth. “You do not need to talk. You do not need words with me. You talk when ready.” OR: Shane goes non-verbal.

It was the sweetest gesture when Sofia came to her grandparents and asked them to help make her daddy and papa a valentine.
