It starts with Shane running out of Ilya’s apartment after one too‑intimate moment over a tuna melt. He tries to bury it by dating Rose Landry, but the Montreal club night blows everything open jealousy, staring, avoidance, all of it. Rose eventually breaks up with him gently, seeing the truth he can’t say out loud. At the All‑Star Game, things shift from canon. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. Something cracks open. He thinks of Shane. He texts him. Does Shane remember the invitation? And does Ilya go?

He tilts forward without meaning to, leaning his forehead against the door, trying to stay upright. Or, Shane experiences subdrop after the events in Vegas, because he absolutely would.

I’m going to call the flight attendant over and get this sorted out right now!” Flustered and cornered, Shane injects his Captain Voice into the conversation. “Ma’am, I understand that you’re upset, but I paid for this seat and am going to stay here. You’ll have to find someone else willing to change places or just fly with the seat you booked. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.” She hisses like a goddamn tea kettle, and starts to say, “You are the most selfish man I’ve ever—” when another voice behind her says, “You are blocking my seat. Move.” Shane and the woman turn to assess the new arrival. It turns out that his seat partner is well above six feet tall, ripped as hell, and knows how to deliver an excellent bitch face. He’s also the hottest man that Shane has ever seen in real life, including a chance run-in with Jensen Ackles at a Stars game. Or, still!famous Shane meets non!famous Ilya on a cursed flight from Ottawa to Boston and kind of (totally) falls in love with him at first sight (and first chirp)

It feels like there are waves crashing over his head, cold and sharp like needles against his skin, and when he does manage to breach the surface for a moment, he’s met with thick fog and a starless sky. It feels sort of like a concussion, but not. There’s no pain, just…haziness. Just a gaping, empty feeling, right in the centre of his chest. (Or, Vegas rewritten.)
