  1. It's been a hell of a year for the Centaurs. Shane and Ilya are playing their first playoffs together as teammates. An old teammate makes Shane doubt his loyalty. Ilya reminds him just how loyal he is. Or; the one where they win it all. Watching Ilya Rozanov work out was damn near obscene. His smooth, glistening body, covered in beads of sweat as he shoulder-pressed a 150lb barbell above his head was a sight to see. Shane was sure that, with enough incentive, Ilya could press him. That would be a PR he'd happily be part of. "What a sight, right?" Harris said, interrupting Shane's thoughts. Shane startled. Had Harris been standing there long? Shane coughed, making a sorry attempt at collecting himself. "Um, yeah, I..." "Enough said," Harris winked. Shane flushed at being caught, a burning heat rising below his eyes. Not the first time he had been caught with a wandering eye in the Ottawa Centaurs gym. Or locker room. Or really anywhere in the practice facility. Shane had been on the Centaurs since July, when his contract with the voyageurs ended and he became a free agent. Since then, Shane and Ilya had been an unstoppable force. Even though they rarely played on the ice at the same time, save for a few power plays, their chemistry was undeniable. They dominated the league in points, and Shane's position on the second-line made it so their power in the center ran deep. "No, I just lost my focus for a sec," Shane tried, but even as he said it, he heard the quips before they came out. He rolled the dumbbell over in his palm, trying to ground himself and not get lost in a hole of embarrassment. "You seem to be losing your focus a lot lately, huh? I thought we hired you for your keen mental discernment," Troy Barrett said. Jesus, was everyone watching him drool over his husband? Shane made a noise between a grunt and a whimper, trying to end the conversation there. Unfortunately, his husband had the worst timing in the world. Ilya dropped his barbell onto its support and lifted his upper body to come to a seated position. His grey T-shirt clung to the contours of his body, a dark ring of sweat pooling along his neckline. His curls stuck to his forehead, not unlike when he and Shane were... intimate. Shane shuddered at the thought. Ilya noticed the three of them aggregated in the corner by the dumbbells, looking straight at him, and lifted his hand to his ear to pull out one of his earphones. "Are you talking about me?" Ilya said coyly, playing with the cord of his earphones. His charm is infuriating. Troy let out a laugh. "Your husband is obsessed with you." Ilya's grin cracked his face in half. "Can you blame him?" "Ugh, you guys are horrible," Shane groaned. The truth was, Shane was obsessed with him. He didn't realize how good it would feel to share everything with each other. A bed, a gym, a team. It all felt so right. And it still felt so new, despite the past few months of working together. So forgive him if he wanted to savour every moment he spent with his husband, especially after years of hiding. "All right everyone, listen up," Coach Wiebe said as he entered the gym. Ilya winked at Shane. Shane cleared his throat and turned to face his Coach. "This is it. Our second year in a row in the playoffs starts tomorrow. This is our chance to show everyone that it was not a fluke. We've got a great chance of really winning this thing this year, especially with our new additions." Shane felt a slap on his back as Troy whooped. Somehow, Shane felt himself turn an even deeper shade of red. He had been welcomed with open arms by the Cens, but it sometimes shook him just how much he was a part of this team. After playing for the Voyageurs for the better part of a decade, it still felt weird to have a different logo on his jersey. Shane recalled that his first goal as a Centaur – Ilya wouldn’t let him forget it, he’d kept the puck – had caused quite the roar in the arena where they played. They called him a hometown hero now. "Now, I know you all want to decorate this place with banners as much as I do, so let's get to work." *** Coach Wiebe was right. They really did have a chance at winning this whole thing. In the first round against Buffalo, every pass connected, their defence was on fire, and Hayes was an iron wall. They swept them, 4-0. Their second round against the Admirals was mildly tougher. Scott Hunter might have been older, but he was still as fast as an arrow when he needed to be. To make matters worse, Luca Haas had been rocked into the glass in their third game and was put on a mandatory three game rest. The Cens readjusted, and Ilya took on Luca's position on the wing. Shane came up to center on the first line. Their chemistry on the ice was unbeatable. It was like they were in each other's brains. He wasn’t sure he would ever enjoy playing hockey after being abandoned by the Voyageurs. Playing with this team – playing with Ilya – it made hockey fun again. They won that series by game 6, 4-2. In their last series in the eastern conference, they were matched up against Montreal. Because of course they were. Whatever angry, homophobic gods were responsible for this were probably laughing down at Shane as he took to center ice to kick off game seven. "Hollander," came a squeaky voice from across the center circle. The arena comes to life as Aaron Goulding, a fresh-faced 19 year old rookie, lines up against Shane for the puck drop. Aaron was supposed to be the new Shane Hollander. Shane had to admit, he was fast -- but his inexperience was obvious. Shane smirked at Goulding's attempt at being tough. "Aaron," Shane replied coolly. The only place Shane ever felt cool was on the ice. "It's an honour," Goulding said. Shane smiled into the floor.

  18. Ilya’s spent his whole life hiding. Now he wants to go to Pride — their first as a married couple, in their new city, with their new team. Shane’s spent his whole career being careful, being quiet, being private about everything that matters. But maybe it’s time to stop being so fucking careful. (or the one where Ilya buys too many flags, the team shows up in matching shirts, and Shane learns what it feels like to be proud.) The humidity hits Shane the moment he steps out onto the back deck, coffee mug warm in his hand despite the August heat. Inside, Ilya is singing along to something in Russian — badly, enthusiastically, the way he does everything these days. The way he’s been doing everything since they got married, since Shane signed with Ottawa, since their whole fucking lives became this impossible thing Shane still can’t quite believe is real. “You are going to burn,” Ilya calls from inside, not even looking. Somehow he always knows when Shane’s outside without sunscreen. “It’s eight in the morning.” “Sun does not care about time.” The screen door slides open and Ilya emerges, shirtless, holding his own coffee and what Shane now recognizes as the industrial-sized bottle of sunscreen they bought at Costco last week. “Also, we have practice in two hours and I am not listening to you complain about sunburn through bag skate.” Shane takes the sunscreen because arguing is pointless. Ilya’s already rubbing it into his shoulders before Shane can even open the cap himself. “You’re very nurturing this morning,” Shane says. “I am keeping my husband alive. Is different.” But Ilya’s hands are gentle, thorough, spreading sunscreen across Shane’s neck, behind his ears, down his arms. “Also, I need to ask you something.” “That sounds ominous.” “Is not ominous.” Ilya moves around to face him, blocking out the sun. His eyes are very blue this morning, the way they get when he’s scheming. “Is fun thing. You like fun.” “I’m immediately suspicious.” “Shane.” Ilya’s hands land on his hips, thumbs hooking into the waistband of Shane’s shorts. “Capital Pride is next weekend.” Shane’s stomach does something complicated. “Okay.” “I want us to go.” The deck is suddenly very quiet except for the sound of someone’s lawn mower three houses down. Shane takes a sip of coffee, buying time. “To Pride.” “Yes, to Pride. In Ottawa. Our city now.” Ilya’s face is open, hopeful, and fuck, Shane knows where this is going. “I have never been to Pride. Not as myself. Not as-” He gestures between them. “As this.” Shane’s chest tightens. “I know.” “In Russia, I could not even-” Ilya stops, swallows. “I could not even think about it, you know? Not just illegal, but dangerous. And then in Boston, I was not ready. Was not out. Was hiding everything.” His hands squeeze Shane’s hips. “But now I am here. With you. And I am married to you. And I can—I want to be there. I want to see it.” “Ilya-” “You do not want to go.” It’s not a question. Ilya’s face does something complicated, shuttering slightly. “That’s not what I said.” “But is what you think.” Shane sets his coffee down on the deck railing, carefully. “I just—it’s going to be a lot. Media will be there. Everyone will-” “Everyone already knows we are married,” Ilya interrupts. “We did not hide this. You signed with Ottawa, everyone knows why. Is not secret.” “I know it’s not a secret.” Shane runs a hand through his hair, frustrated with himself, with how he can’t seem to just be as brave as Ilya makes it look. “I’m just—I’m not good at this stuff. The public thing. The-” “The being proud of us thing?” “That’s not fair.” Ilya’s expression softens. He steps closer, cups Shane’s face in both hands. “Moya lyubov. I am not trying to be unfair. I am trying to-” He pauses, searching for words. “I spent my whole life being afraid. Hiding. Pretending. And now I do not want to do this anymore. I want to go to Pride with my husband. I want to hold your hand in public and not be scared. I want to-” His voice cracks slightly. “I want to exist, okay? As myself. As bisexual man. As married man. As Ilya Rozanov who loves Shane Hollander more than anything.” Shane’s throat is tight. “Fuck.” “Is good fuck or bad fuck?” “Good fuck.” Shane pulls Ilya closer, wraps his arms around him. “Always good fuck when you do the romantic speech thing.” Ilya laughs against his shoulder. “So you will come?” “Of course I’ll come, you manipulative asshole.” “I am not manipulative. I am persuasive. Is different.” “You’re both.”

  19. When an accident on the ice leaves Shane fighting for his life, Ilya tries to keep it together when facing the prospect of losing the love of his life before they got the chance to really live. Shane had been hit with a puck before, usually brushing it off with the knowledge that he would be sporting a hell of a bruise for a while. Which was why it felt so strange to him that he couldn’t hear Hayden talking to him after taking a slapshot to the center of his chest. He tried to reassure his friend that he was okay, but the world turned off instead. Ilya couldn’t breathe. It was one of the few times in the game that he was on the bench, without being in the penalty box, and he had seen the puck collide into his boyfriend’s chest. He had winced in sympathy, but had been too concerned. That changed when Hollander had wobbled, then collapsed to the ice without doing anything to stop his fall. Hayden’s lunge forward was the only thing that stopped Shane’s face from slamming into the ice. Out of the corner of his eye, Ilya saw the medics starting to head for the ice, and everything started spinning when Hayden started doing chest compressions with panic on his face. “Folks, please stay in your seats to keep all aisles clear for the medics.” Came over the loudspeaker as Ilya tried to fight against Troy’s restraining arms. They both knew the request to keep the aisles clear meant a catastrophic injury. Hayden was being pushed away by one of the refs, giving the medics room to work, and the other man sent a horrified look at the benches that Ilya knew was for him. Ilya couldn’t have stopped the sob that left him if he had wanted to when a medic cut Hollander’s jersey open, followed by the shoulder pads that had done little to protect his chest. Thankfully for their secret, no one in the now silent area seemed to care or be doing much better. Pads for the shock-thing that Ilya could never remember the name of were slapped on Hollander’s bare chest, and everyone in the stands and benches waited with bated breath as it spoke. Ilya gave up pretending to be okay when the machine recommended a shock, and dropped his head into his folded arms on the half wall separating them from the ice. He could feel Troy rubbing his back, and only lifted his head high enough to see when a medic yelled clear. A whimper left him as the love of his life jerked on the ice, and he sobbed openly when he heard another medic report that there was a heartbeat. Things moved even faster after that. “Looks like the medics are getting ready to move Hollander off the ice, so we ask everyone to remain in their seats. We are getting information that the rest of the game is going to be postponed and rescheduled to a later date. The current score and stats will be carried over.” The Centaur's coach started herding the players from the bench and into the locker room, but Ilya refused to move from his seat, his eyes glued to his boyfriend's still form. Weibe finally made his way over to gently grab onto the back of Ilya’s neck. “The sooner we get you changed, the sooner you can get to him.” Weibe whispered, giving his neck a paternal squeeze despite barely being old enough to be Ilya’s father. By that time, the medics were moving Shane off the ice, so Ilya gave in to the advice and left the bench. They hadn’t meant to come out the entire Centaurs roster, but they had decided to show up unannounced at Ilya’s Ottawa home while the couple was in the shower. It was too difficult to explain away, so they went with the truth and were pleasantly surprised when it was relatively well received. None of them had cared that they were interested in men, though coming to grips with the fact that the two biggest rivals in the NHL were a committed couple took a little longer. It had been a huge relief to both Shane and Ilya in different ways. For Ilya, it meant a place where he didn’t have to hide how much he loved his boyfriend, and for Shane, it was hope that things might not be that bad once they went public. The only change was the teasing Rozanov got about using the rivalry as flirtation and foreplay. He’d never been more thankful for the unintentional outing than that moment. The moment he walked through the locker room doors, hands were there to help strip him out of his gear. He followed their instructions on autopilot, too numb with fear to do anything else. It took less than five minutes to have him stripped, pushed into the shower, dried off, and dressed. When he was pushed out of the locker room with well-wishes and assurances that they would meet him at the hospital as soon as they could, David Hollander was waiting for him. “I didn’t think you’d be in any shape to drive.” Shane’s father told him, taking Ilya’s keys from limp hands. “Are you?” Ilya found himself asking quietly. “Not really, but I can pretend for a bit.” David admitted, and Rozanov followed him silently out to the parking lot. He was a little surprised Yuna wasn’t there, but assumed that she had gone in the ambulance with her son. The Russian was thankful he had driven his sensible car to the game, since he wasn’t sure either one could drive a high-performance sports car in their state, and spent the drive to the hospital in near silence. He gripped onto his mother’s crucifix hard, muttering prayers in Russian that he had never claimed to believe in. Begging not to lose Shane like he had lost his mother. “What happened?” He finally asked, breaking the silence. “His heart…fine before.” English was being difficult as his mind raced in panicked circles, forgetting words other than those in his native language. His accent was more pronounced as well, and he felt like that seventeen- year-old visiting Canada for the first time nearly a decade ago. “We don’t know.” David admitted, nearly as softly. It made Ilya fight back terrified tears. “His heart stopped, we know that, just not why. But it was beating normally when they got him to the ambulance.” It was something. Knowing that Shane’s heart was beating again made it feel like Ilya could breathe again. They pulled into the first parking spot they saw and both rushed out of the car. David was through the door immediately, but Ilya hesitated. As long as he was outside, as long as no one told him that something had gone wrong, his Hollander was fine. He was alive. He could still love Ilya back. Yuna walking out ruined the pretense, and he braced himself for bad news. “Shane’s okay, Ilya. He’s fine and starting to wake up.” She told the young man she had started to claim as her own. The relief that flowed through Rozanov made his knees shake, and he had to force himself to stay upright so Yuna could get him inside. She walked him past the check-in desk, and Ilya realized that meant that Shane was already in a room. “Hey.” Shane said with a tired smile when he saw Ilya, who immediately made his way to the bed and gently rested his forehead against the other man’s. “Never do that to me again, Hollander.” He murmured in Russian, which had Shane reaching up to cup the back of Ilya’s head to keep him there for a moment.
