So, you like New Yorker? by oxfordcommachameleon
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-27
“So,” Ilya cleared his throat, the word sounding too loud in the stillness. “Shane tells me you like New Yorker.” Shane’s dad looked at him from where he was rinsing out a glass in the sink, visibly surprised that Ilya had spoken first. “Oh. Yes,” he said after a beat. “I like to read in the mornings. I love the crossword. Do you read The New Yorker too?” “No.” “Oh.” or While Shane is outside with his mother, Ilya finds unexpected understanding and warmth in a quiet kitchen conversation with the man who helped raised the boy he loves.

But then, when Ilya had finally set him down and tugged him in close for a kiss, he’d trailed his lips right to the sensitive skin beneath Shane’s ear. Then he’d whispered, low and growly, “My room number is 1710.” Shane remembers laughing even harder, “Yeah, you idiot, it’s mine too.” Ilya raised a single, perfect eyebrow, “And how does bellhop afford such a room?” -- Fresh from a slump-ending victory, the Ottawa Centaurs' star players have a special celebration.

Unlike professional basketball or football, the NHL didn’t have any games on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Shane wouldn’t have minded if that wasn’t the case– he loves playing hockey, and he loves seeing the Montreal fans in the festive spirit –but it’s just as nice to have time off to spend with his family and friends. And now, Ilya. His boyfriend. His… lover.

He wishes he had more practice interacting with normal families. Surprisingly, it’s David who speaks first. “I should cook something,” he says with a soft smile, “What?” David empties what remains in his glass and smiles at Ilya, “Hockey isn’t the only thing those two have in common. Both of them need some comfort food and their favorite drink after a stressful day.” he stands up, “This is good to know, Shane sometimes stresses a lot,” Ilya finishes his drink as well, “can I help?” Or: Yuna leaves the cottage, and Shane follows her, leaving a confused Ilya sitting alone with David Hollander for the first time. This has all the potential to become the most awkward conversation in Ilya's life, but instead... David asks him to make pasta with him.

'I have seen your charity in her name, Mama should not be forgotten.' The note was short and to the point, no love for Ilya from his brother was scrawled into the familiar letters. But there was love for their mother there, and there was the fact that Andrei had sent it at all. - Ilya's brother sends a parcel containing home video from Ilya's childhood to Canada. Ilya never expected to receive a parcel from his brother after five years of no contact, and He never expected to hear his mother's voice again.

They’re at the Kingfisher, a low-key queer bar in New York. Shane and Ilya try to meet up here with Kip and Scott whenever they’re in town– usually for a game, or a charity event. This time it was to shoot brand deal content for Calvin Klein. Shane was a little mortified prancing around in tighty-whiteys, while Ilya smouldered and smirked to the camera with confidence. It’s been surprisingly nice, these little get-togethers. Or maybe not so surprising; it’s incredibly relaxing and relieving to be with maybe the only two other people who have pretty much gone through what Shane and Ilya have.

“Is not like we don’t know how to be quiet, we hooked up in hotels for over a decade.” “It’s not about being quiet, Ilya. No matter what we do, they’re going to assume we’re in there having sex.” “Yeah, well, we probably will be having sex.” Ilya didn’t really understand the issue. Was he supposed to pretend he and his husband were celibate? Half the guys on the team made jokes about post-game sex with their partners. No one ever batted an eye with them. “Quiet sex, though.” Shane hadn’t disagreed, but apparently it wasn’t a helpful distinction. Shane insists he and Ilya sleep in separate hotel rooms for away games. Neither of them handle it very well.

His teammates were not treating this as the hard interview Ilya imagined it. Gone were the serious "intervention" faces, replaced with the glee of anticipation. "Roz was going to tell us about his fiancée," Dykstra told Hollander. Shane choked on his bite of Raisin Bran. "Oh?" "Yeah, I assume you know her. Did he say anything in the car, Hazy?" "Dude didn't say one word." ------------ The Centaurs stage an intervention.
