    “Is Boston even interested.”

Ilya scoffs at him like Shane is an idiot.

“Is sky blue? Is water wet? Is English stupid language? Yes, Hollander, of course we want best player in the league.” Ilya mutters more in disgruntled Russian and Shane gets up off the couch to Google Russian lessons on his ipad while continuing their conversation.

Or, a Shane goes to Boston story.

The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.

The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.

“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”

Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.

“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"

Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

    -
Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.

Bood: And what would this person need to get Roz to settle down?
Roz: must be most beautiful person you have ever seen
Roz: very funny but does not know they are funny
Roz: and suck dick like their life depends on it

Or: The Centaurs know that Roz is sad, and probably a little lonely. So they do their best to set him up with someone who matches his specific list of requirements. What they don't know is that their captain has already found that person.

Ilya realized that he had two choices, and neither of them was very good. He could let his teammates believe he was a controlling asshole of a husband, or he could talk to them about things that Shane would probably prefer to keep to himself. He knew how private his husband was, how much time he’d spent cultivating a very particular image of himself to the world. An image of himself that only Ilya and a few other people were ever able to see behind.

    or

Wyatt Hayes and the rest of the Ottawa Centaurs find out that Shane Hollander isn’t exactly what they’d imagined.

When he was seven years old, Shane Hollander was briefly lost at an airport. Luckily, the kindness of a stranger ensured he made it back to his parents safely, putting an end to a terrifying three hours for the Hollanders. It takes twenty years (and one heated rivalry) for Shane to learn the name of his rescuer. It takes twenty years for Ilya to learn his wish had already come true.

Ilya turned slightly toward the reporter. “Shane won’t say this, but it’s true. When your captain is calm, you don’t panic. You just… follow him.”

The reporter blinked. “You’re talking about Shane’s leadership?”

Ilya’s smile was devastating. “I am talking about my husband.”

The room sucked in a collective breath. Husband. Said as if they were discussing muffin recipes.

On the internet: Breaking: Shane Hollander maintains perfect composure while his teammate professes eternal devotion live on air.

Shane agrees to one post-game interview with Ilya. Ilya is determined to make sure everyone knows how brilliant, beautiful, and perfect his husband is.

It was awkward. What do you say to the boy your son loves when he’s awake in the middle of the night with a haunted look in his eye? Ilya looked nervous in a way that was difficult to place. She wondered if she should get Shane—the boy looked like he needed someone. He looked young, like he needed a mother. Yuna was a mother, and a damn good one if Shane was any indication. ~ How Ilya Rozanov goes from Yuna's son's archrival to her son's boyfriend to her favorite son.
