Then the sound comes. It isn’t like the other creaks. It’s sharper. Deeper. Wrong. Shane feels it before he understands it, a sudden vibration beneath his feet, a jolt straight through his bones. He looks up, mouth already forming Ilya’s name. The ice fractures under Ilya in a split second. There’s a crack like a gunshot, the surface splintering outward, and then Ilya is gone. Swallowed by black water that surges violently up through the hole. “Ilya!” Shane’s skates scrape uselessly as he tries to stop, heart slamming so hard it knocks the air from his lungs. He drops to his knees a few meters back, terrified to get closer, terrified not to. Steam curls up from the water like breath in the freezing air. Time breaks. One second. Two. Three. Nothing. - Shane and Ilya enjoy their Christmas break at Shane's cottage, until Ilya falls through the ice as they skate on the lake.

It’s Ilya Rozanov’s first Christmas with the Hollander family as Shane’s boyfriend. Between festive fluff, stolen kisses, and a spicy mischief right in front of Elf on the Shelf (omg scandalous), Ilya realizes he’s never felt this much at home before. “Ilya!” Yuna smiled and spread her arms wide open, waiting by her car. She went on her tip toes to kiss his cheek when he approached, and gave him a warm look. “Perfect. Let’s go!” She drove nothing like Shane. She was a fast, confident driver, overtaking cars at the most unexpected moments. Ilya found himself unknowingly white-knuckling the door handle and his seatbelt, eyes wide. “We need the essentials for dinner, obviously,” she began, barely glancing at the road as she merged aggressively. “But then we need new plates and a tablecloth. Last year, David tripped over our cousin’s dog – it’s a Newfoundland, a huge beast – and well, there went the wine, the food, and my favorite linens. You should have seen it! Absolute chaos. Anyway, the boys are at home decorating the tree, and I’ve tasked Shane with deep-cleaning the bathroom, so...” She spoke with such rapid-fire energy that Ilya could only stare at her, puzzled and impressed. Then, she laughed, and for a split second, her face transformed into the exact expression Shane would wear in moments like this. It was the first real confirmation that she was, indeed, his mother.

A Very Hollander Christmas. by bearprofessor
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-12-24
Ilya was never the biggest fan of Christmas presents, since it was always a competition of how much money you could spend on proving you loved each other more. When Ilya and Shane (and Anya) start to spend Christmas Day with Shane's very sentimental gift-giving parents, Ilya changes his mind about gifts in general. Typical fluff ensues.

Hayden looks up and catches sight of Shane, thumbs hooked in his belt loops to leave the logo on his chest clear. “No. Shane. No. Get out.” “You like it?” “Please, please tell me that’s not—” Shane spins to show off the back. “Authentic.” “No,” Hayden says, drawing out the word plaintively. “In my house?” Shane wears Ilya's jersey to watch the game at Hayden's.

Shane loves Christmas. He always has. A quiet time surrounded by family, with good food and presents, and time to let his brain just sit. He can’t wait to bask in his parents' love and attention, being with people who he (mostly) doesn’t have to hide or perform around. Though he’d be lying if he said that his thoughts have been solely on them. Because every time he’s not busy, he finds his thoughts wandering to Ilya Rozanov. What is Rozanov doing? Does he even celebrate Christmas? Does he wish he could spend it back home in Russia? Does he have anyone to spend Christmas with? Would he want to spend it with Shane if he could? Fucking, of course. They would be fucking, because that’s what they do. Always. There is absolutely nothing else there. But still, in the quietest moments, he wonders… _____ Or, Christmas keeps finding Shane and Ilya at every stage of their lives— from rivals, to lovers, to husbands

Ilya stands in the hallway of Shane’s parents’ house with his boots still on, shoulders slightly hunched, fingers worrying the sleeve of his sweater. He’s been here before, plenty of times, but tonight feels different. Tonight means something. Christmas lights glow along the banister, warm gold reflected in the windowpanes, and somewhere deeper in the house there’s the low murmur of voices and the clink of dishes. He leans toward Shane and whispers, for the third time since they parked the car. “Are you sure it’s okay? Like, really okay?” Shane smiles at him, soft and fond, the way he does when he understands exactly what’s going on in Ilya’s head. He cups Ilya’s elbow, thumb brushing reassurance into skin. “Yes,” he says gently. “They want you here. I want you here.” Ilya nods, even though his chest still feels too full, like something might spill over if he breathes wrong. Christmas with a family. A real one. Not a hotel, not a team dinner, not a quiet night pretending it doesn’t matter. This matters so much it scares him. - Ilya's first Christmas with the Hollanders.

Ilya decides he and Shane should celebrate their first Christmas as a public couple by hosting the holiday at their cottage with friends and family. And then there are friends and family everywhere, and emotionally charged salads and its all a little too much. Good thing Shane is practiced at soothing out the too muchness. tl;dr Christmasy smut. Vague spoilers for The Long Game. Don't come for me if I messed up some Long Game details - it was lowkey devastating and I have yet to gear up for a reread.

Shane’s eyes dart to the tree and back to Ilya. “I mean. You don’t think it looks a little uneven?” Ilya’s eyebrows go up, and he whips his head around to look at the tree before rounding on Shane again. “What do you mean ‘uneven?’ The whole fucking thing is covered in lights, there’s hardly any tree left.” “You don’t think there are too many on one side?” “Absolutely not.” “Okay, just - look at it from this angle.” Shane gives his sleeve a tug, pulling Ilya over to stand next to him, watching his eyes sweep up and down the tree. Finally, Ilya says, “You are crazy.” Decorating a tree together can actually be so personal.

Ilya tutted. “Uhm like Father Christmas- Santa Claus, yes? Only, on New Year. Old man visits home, walks through front door, and greets children with present. Less creepy than Santa Claus.” Shane furrowed his eyebrows. “You think Santa is creepy?” “Listen to song, Shane. He sees you when you’re sleeping- knows when you’re awake..” Ilya waved a hand and scrunched up his face as he gently leaned over to inspect the small Christmas village people. “He watches like some pervert.” Shane surprises Ilya by decorating for christmas....Shane gets railed....and Ilya makes the Hollander parents cry.

Ilya’s first Christmas at home *** Yuna smiles at him, the corners of her mouth tightening with some emotion he can’t fully understand. “We just wanted you to feel at home.” Ilya looks down. His nose burns, the ribbons wrapped around the green paper swimming together in a red haze as his eyes inexplicably fill with tears. Squeezing the box so hard the paper wrinkles, tearing at the top where his thumb presses against it, he takes a deep breath, trying to find the words to explain how he wouldn’t know what that felt like. Not before Shane anyway.
