  1. In January 2017, the Montreal Voyageurs ceased to exist. The owner and GM vanished after embezzling $600 million into a crypto scheme, forcing the franchise into federal bankruptcy and immediate dissolution. Contracts were voided overnight. Shane hadn’t spoken to Ilya since the tuna melt incident. Now, with no team, Shane could end up anywhere, on opposite sides of the country, or in the same locker room as Ilya.

  2. Shane hasn’t been new on a team since his rookie season. He hasn’t had to walk into a locker room full of guys he doesn’t know since he was nineteen. That first year in Montreal had been one of the most exhausting of his life, and the hockey had been the least of it.

Boston’s locker room will be easier than Montreal's, Shane thinks. Hopes.

  3. It figures that even half-way across the world Ilya's dick manages to ruin Cliff's day. The real surprise is that it isn't the only dick involved in this mess.

Featuring an ill-timed outing, a supportive but clueless team trying its best, panicking over Russia's LGBTQ laws, too many group chats, an unhinged 3am brainstorming session on how to get your captain a new citizenship (asking for a friend) and Roz' inability to answer his fucking phone.

Or: Ilya disappears in Sochi. Half-way across the world his team does its best to help. Their best is more than anyone could have foreseen.

  4. Ilya hadn’t known the video existed. If he had known, he would have paid someone to have it destroyed. Would have paid someone to murder Kuznetsov, maybe, just for redundancy's sake. But it was peak stupidity, to keep evidence of your homosexual perversion around in a country where that crime could get you sent to jail for several decades, and Ilya hadn’t thought that Kuznetsov would be that dumb.

Now here Ilya was, watching a video of his fourteen-year-old self on Twitter getting fucked by his former hockey coach.

So. There go the plans for the rest of his life.

    -

Or: in 2018, during Ilya's last year with the Raiders, an old video is leaked on Twitter. Ilya reacts, or overreacts. Shane does, too.

  5. "I'm calling it 'Adopt a Stray,'" Cliff announced, pacing the rug. "Tomorrow night. Boston vs. Montreal. We announce a new 'tradition.' We say that Boston has noticed that not every team is as close as ours. We say we’re looking for 'strays'—players who aren’t really accepted by their team, always seem an outcast, that need a little extra team bonding or whatever. And the first 'stray' we’re adopting? Is Shane Hollander."

But that doesn't mean no one leaves them... - Set during Ep 5 after Ilya's father dies.

  7. “Were you sleeping with Rose Landry?” LeClaire asked, and Ilya felt his entire world flip upside down. Ilya scoffed and sank into the chair. He stared at his lap and, for a second, wished he could just say yes. It would have been easier. A simpler explanation. Something everyone else could swallow. “No,” he answered instead. “I was not sleeping with Landry.” Coach sighed, the weight of it settling uncomfortably in the office. “So it was Hollander, then.” Or Ilya gets called into his Coach's office after Rose and Shane start dating and an uncomfortable conversation takes place. Ilya realizes some things. Also he may need to stop reading his thesaurus.

  8. Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.

It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.

  9. Ilya barely manages to swerve in time to avoid turning the Hollander-Marleau collision into a three-man pileup. He watches as Marleau stands up and apologizes to Shane — Ilya has no idea if it was a clean hit, but from Marleau’s face, he’s pretty sure it was accidental. And then Ilya waits for Shane to get up. He doesn’t move. Marleau glances at him as Ilya skates up to Shane, putting a hand on his shoulder as he says, “Hollander?” When he gets no response, he says it again, this time louder and with a steadily rising sense of dread. “Hollander, come on, get up.”
