  2. Ilya hasn't seen Shane in a few weeks, since he ran out of Ilya's house after he called him by his name. It sucks, but Ilya's mostly handling it. He's mostly handling it until they end up at some stupid MHL banquet thing and he sees Shane smiling with some girl at the bar. Shane's embarrassed, was overwhelmed by Ilya calling him his name because they didn't do that. And he didn't handle it great, and maybe dating a girl right after wasn't the move, but Shane was stressed. He and Rose broke up, because she realized he was gay and Shane felt sort of like an ass even though she said they could still be friends. And he was dealing with it, sort of, mostly he was just trying to avoid it. Until his coach told him he had to be at a banquet and he saw Ilya across the room, then he was drinking a nasty tasting red wine and trying not to look his way. OR Shane and Ilya haven't talked since Shane ran out of Ilya's apartment, neither of them is planning on talking either, until Shane gets roofied at some official MHL banquet and Ilya takes care of him.

  3. “Hollander,” Ilya urges, voice deceptively level. “Who did this to you?” ---- Shane stumbles back to his apartment, bruised and battered, after a grueling night of patrolling Montreal as Spider-Man. He finds Ilya waiting for him on his bed, shirtless and cocky and woefully uncaring that Shane warned him not to come by tonight. Lying to the world is one thing. Lying to Ilya, the one person he truly trusts, is another.

  6. “Rozy—shit,” he manages, voice strangled, want bubbling molten and inescapable in his gut, hips trembling with the force of not rudely bucking up into Rozanov’s warm, far too talented mouth. Because I just wanted you to fuck me, he thinks after he’ s finished making Shane unravel with soft, unforgiving motions, as Rozanov—as Ilya—laves his tongue hungrily over the mess dripping down the planes of his abdomen, blinking overwhelmed tears away from the diminuendo of pleasure. But then I became greedy. And now all I want is for you to love me. Or: despite the initial fear, the world doesn't end when Shane Hollander realizes he loves Ilya Rozanov. Now, he just has to convince Ilya of that same truth. An adjusted timeline. A collection of moments. A story about completing someone, despite the odds.

  7. During Ilya's first season in Ottawa, Shane asks his dad to pick Ilya up from the hospital after a mild injury. Or: Ilya doesn't realize that the Hollanders are a package deal. David, in his way, tries to remedy that. It's late when his phone buzzes. Not so late that he's asleep, though he probably should be, because it's been a very long evening and he's never been able to switch off when a game doesn’t go well. It used to be just Shane that he’d be up late worrying over. He’s seen plenty of injuries, Shane’s been skating since he was two years old, but it doesn’t get easier when it’s your kid. And now, there’s two of them. It was different last year when Ilya played for Boston. He and Shane were so new—to them, at least—so they’d just text. Yuna would ask how he’s feeling in the family group chat and Ilya would always reply that he’s fine, make some comment about an opposing player he’d get back next time, always put on that brave front or direct attention back to Shane. But now, two summers and then some, not to mention the foundation, it’s different. They know Ilya now. He comes over for dinner every other week—once a month with Shane when their schedules match, once a month alone—and always insists upon doing the dishes with Yuna, trying very hard to follow her rapid-fire stream of consciousness and well-intended micromanagement of his career, the occasional yet accidentally painful questions she blurts with no filter. It takes nearly six months of regular dinners for the man to relax when Shane isn’t present, something that troubles Yuna but Shane (and David) insist isn’t to do with something they’ve done wrong. They know that he’s good at cards but prefers playing Yahtzee and he refuses to play Sorry! on principle. (“Why call it Sorry? I am not sorry you are losing.”) They know he’s quiet sometimes, that there’s a shadow in his eyes. Especially when Shane is gone. When that happens, they share a glance, save doing dishes for the morning, and turn on old reruns of game shows he saves on the DVR to drone on in the background. Yuna can’t stand them, so she watches for five minutes before growing bored, wandering off. She always throws the fluffy pink blanket from the hallway closet over Ilya before she retreats to her office or the bedroom, only coming out if Shane calls. Speaking of: David reaches for his phone, slides his finger across the screen to answer. “Hey, Shane.” ”Hi Dad,” Shane sounds tired. Montreal played tonight too, but this kind of tired, this weight, it’s different. “You talk to Ilya? That was a nasty tumble into the boards.” Shane sounds far away. It’s quiet though, so he must be back home. “Doctors just read the scan. Looks okay, thankfully. They want him to stay overnight for observation since he doesn’t have anybody at home, but,” Shane trails off. “Is, um,” he pauses again, sounding a little nervous. “Is Mom asleep?” Ah, he thinks, knowing where this conversation is headed. “Yeah, she turned in about an hour ago when Ilya texted the group chat. Did you tell him to—“ “He doesn’t want to be a burden,” Shane blurts, honest to a fault, then “Fuck. He’d be so mad that I said that.” “You are calling me to pick him up, right?” David’s already grabbing his keys from the bowl at the edge of the kitchen counter, has one foot shoved into his boots. It’s freezing this time of year, but the garage is warm enough that he won’t need to wait for the car to warm up before he hops in. ”I—yeah,” he agrees. “Okay,” He answers, easy, pointedly ignoring Shane’s sigh of relief. “We’ll pretend the other part didn’t happen. Your game go alright? Saw you got three assists, not bad. Mom was screaming at Tampa like they’d personally insulted her when you got hooked, though.” ”Yeah, game was good,” Shane is totally tuned out, but he usually crashes hard on the second night of a back-to-back and this game went to a shootout. He’s supposed to drive out to Ottawa in the morning. He'd make the drive tonight, even though he shouldn't, which means Ilya has probably talked him down. “Just tired. Worried.” David hits the button for the ignition and the car comes to life as the garage door opens. He can hear the subtle beep as the call switches to Bluetooth. “I’m in the Audi, and there’s no snow on the roads so I’ll be there in forty. Want me to call him when I get close? You sound like you’re going to conk out any second.” ”Would you?” “’Course, kiddo.” “Thanks, Dad. I’ll text him that you’re already on your way so he can ask for the discharge paperwork.” And so that Ilya can’t try to call and stop him, Shane doesn’t say. — ❄ — It’s just after one in the morning when Ilya puts his bag in the trunk. He’s quiet, squinting against the bright white of snow flurries and yellowy parking lot lighting. David hands him a pair of sunglasses when he throws himself into the passenger seat, in lieu of a greeting, the extra pair he kept in the glovebox from two seasons ago when Shane had his most recent concussion. “Is mild,” Ilya insists, staring straight ahead. He takes the glasses, holds them loosely in his fingers, but refuses to put them on. “Three days rest, team medic clears me, back on ice in a

And without the gleeful sounds, behind him, Shane could feel his anger taming down. He’ll just get off on the next floor. That was the plan until he felt the whole elevator shake with a jump. 11. Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.

“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.

And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.

Just once. Just a single nod.

Why did he have to nod?

“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”

    “Of course.”

    Of course.

    “Was it better?”

    “Yes.”

  17. When Ilya gets injured while swimming in the lake, Shane scrambles to save him from drowning. ("We all get our bell rung, eventually." -Shane Hollander) It was a less than perfect day at the lake. A gray day—little sun. But Shane Hollander was overflowing with light. He felt it on his cheeks, all over his skin, in his bones. He couldn’t stop smiling with it. The cottage itself seemed to glow with a living aura. The night before he was looking into his longtime lover’s eyes when he said—twice in Russian, and then once in English—“I love you.” Shane said it back. And his world shifted like tectonic plates. No day would ever truly be gray again. Ilya Rozanov stood on top of the large, slanted rock on which Shane sat. “Don’t dive into the water, you idiot. It’s shallow here—up to your waist.” Ilya ruffled Shane’s slate-black hair. “I do little jump,” Rozanov said. “Barely dive. Closer to —what do you say—eh, belly flop.” Shane rolled his eyes as he carefully rearranged his hair. “You’re going to belly flop into cold water with bruised ribs?” Ilya winced and wrinkled his nose at the thought. “You dive in there and you’re going to sprain your wrists on the bottom before your feet hit the water,” Hollander warned. “Fine!” Ilya made a show of putting his hands behind his back by stretching his long arms up and around. He clasped his own fingers together and stared down at Hollander. “No arms. Half belly flap, half dive. Yes? Approved?” The fondness for Ilya that glowed in Shane’s heart warmed. “Fine!” he said, pronouncing the word with a Russian accent, speaking it the same way Ilya had a moment ago. “But there’s a downed tree down there so aim to the—” Ilya rotated to the right and dove nose-first over Shane’s knees. “—left.” Shane gulped. Ilya disappeared into the water—all six feet of him—and Shane sighed. He looked around, taking a moment to ingest the view. The hockey captain took in the trees, the horizon on the water, the sky. All beautiful, he concluded. But not as beautiful as Ilya Rozanov’s body in those swimming trunks. That was his favorite view of all. Shane looked down at the spot in the water where Ilya had disappeared, and curled his hands into fists when he realized that a whole half minute had passed. How long could his lover hold his breath? Shane didn’t know. “Rozanov?” he called to the silent lake. “Ilya!” The clouds shifted then. Shane concluded that an entire minute had passed. Sunlight through the trees illuminated the colors of the water—blue, black, teal, green... And red. “FUCK,” Shane gasped at the sight of the blood. He eased himself into the water and started swimming as fast as he could. His leg bumped something solid. Shane took a deep breath and dropped underwater, eyes open. Arms paddling, fingers reaching, mostly blind, Shane felt around for the solid object. Fingers found the underwater tree, first, but then he found something hard that felt like skin, and he pulled. Shane summoned all of his strength and swam for the surface. He emerged gasping, holding the limp, unmoving body in a bridal carry. Rozanov’s head lolled against Shane’s bicep— eyes shut, mouth open. “Ilya!” Hollander shouted at him. “ILYA!” When not even an eyelid flinched, he swore again and stomped toward the shore. Shane had never heard his own heart beating. But it was thundering in his ears when he gently laid Ilya’s waterlogged body down on the grass. Rozanov’s skin was corpse-colored except for the massive gash at his hairline that was leaking blood. “Dammit!” Shane shouted, voice cracking, when water leaked from Rozanov’s blue-tinted lips. He rolled him onto his side and watched several cups of water stream from his mouth. Then Shane knelt, pressed his ear to Ilya’s lips, and both listened and felt for his breathing. Nothing. No inhale. No exhale. Tears erupted from Shane’s dark eyes. He pressed two fingers against the pulse point on Ilya’s throat. He found it. Ilya had a pulse. But Shane was certain his heart was beating too slow—the sensation shallow under the white skin. Shane’s eyes were so soaked with tears that everything went funhouse mirror blurry. He rolled Ilya onto his back, squeezed his nostrils shut, and blew air into his lungs. Again. Again and again and again. Over and over he breathed breath into his lover. In the distance, a loon called—mocking, almost. “Please,” Shane said against Ilya’s lips. “Wake up, you asshole! Please!” Shane pulled back and looked down at Ilya’s slack face. “Ilya,” he begged. “ILYA!” Then, with all his strength, Shane pushed down on Ilya’s stomach. Water, vomit, and who knew what else erupted from Ilya’s stomach and chest. A cough followed it—then another. After three more, Ilya’s eyes burst open and he went into a coughing fit that Shane had no doubt killed his already bruised ribs. Shane lifted Ilya’s body, then. Lifted him up into his arms so that he was almost sitting. Shane held him while he coughed—didn’t care about the blood slowly soaking his swimming trunks or the vomit under his knees. Ilya’s wide eyes found Shane’s and refused to look away. Shane whispered into Ilya’s ear, “I’m here, I’ve got you, just breathe, you’re ok—you’re ok—you’re ok.” The blood flow didn’t stop, but the coughing eventually did. “Shane,” Ilya wheezed. “S- Sorry…” “Shhh,” Hollander soothed. “You hit your head. You’re bleeding bad. I have to get you to the hospital—can you stand?”

"Ilya had loved him through his worst moments. Ilya had helped him find a therapist when he’d collapsed on the floor of their hotel bathroom after losing a particularly brutal game, scratching at his chest. Ilya had held him, even when Shane yelled at him because there was panic crawling under his skin and he felt as though it might claw its way out. Ilya had told him it was okay; that it didn’t make him a bad player to resent the spotlight sometimes, that it didn’t make him a bad teammate to hate the team when they were too loud and too drunk and too physical, that it didn’t make him a bad person to need space to breathe. Ilya saved him.

And look what you give him in return. You’re a shitty husband, Shane Hollander.

You don’t deserve his last name."
